Chapter 145: Marvel: Awakening the Little Universe at the Start, Chapter 68
Gwen hurriedly took out her phone and dialed Hawk’s number.
The phone was powered off.
Gwen’s heart skipped a beat. Just then, the television in her bedroom was broadcasting the incident at the Calvin Cemetery from last night, presented by a beautiful anchorwoman.
There was no helping it.
News is time-sensitive; if you don’t report it, other stations will, and then the ratings will belong to someone else.
So, for the sake of ratings and advertising revenue, the stations didn’t give a damn about the various calls from Washington trying to persuade them to play dead. Fearing they would be a step behind, they raced against time to broadcast the exclusive photos and news materials brought back by their resourceful reporters.
When the beautiful anchorwoman on the screen displayed a photo of Spider-Man taken at the Calvin Cemetery, which had just been purchased for five hundred dollars, a name immediately popped into Gwen’s mind.
Peter Parker!
Gwen’s eyes lit up. She picked up her phone again, found Peter’s number, and called him directly.
This time the phone wasn’t off, and it was answered quickly.
“Gwen.”
“Peter, was that Hawk last night?”
Gwen got straight to the point: “Did you see where Hawk went?”
Peter on the other end of the line was silent for a moment, then scratched his head: “I only just found out about the Calvin Cemetery incident from the news too. Hawk was at…”
Gwen felt her trigeminal nerve throbbing.
“Peter!”
“Uh…”
Peter opened his mouth, hesitating for a moment: “Hawk is fine. By the time I arrived, the fight was already over.”
After subconsciously answering Gwen’s question, Peter couldn’t help but ask: “Did Hawk tell you my identity?”
Upon hearing that Hawk was safe, Gwen felt a weight lift from her heart. Listening to Peter’s confusion on the phone, she said in a low, wistful tone: “I’m not an idiot. You’ve changed so much, and on top of that, you’ve become friends with Hawk; it’s not hard to guess you’re Spider-Man.”
Hearing Gwen’s explanation, Peter nodded subconsciously.
“Where is Hawk now? I can’t get through to him.”
“I don’t know.”
“Peter!”
“I really don’t know.”
Peter hurriedly explained: “Hawk left too quickly. He only asked if I intended to stop him. I didn’t have that intention, so I stepped aside, and then he vanished.”
As he spoke, Peter asked curiously: “By the way, Gwen, I thought Hawk went to Long Island on vacation with you. Why was he at the Calvin Cemetery last night?”
Hearing this, Gwen thought for a moment and pursed her lips.
“Hawk has a younger sister named Hearing Hearing Anya who passed away in an accident in 2009. She was buried in the Calvin Cemetery. Every Christmas, Hawk goes there to spend time with her.”
“So it really was a sister.”
Peter exclaimed.
Gwen raised an eyebrow.
“What’s wrong?”
“Before Hawk left, he asked me what I would do if someone destroyed Uncle Ben’s tombstone.”
“Was Hearing Hearing Anya’s tombstone destroyed?”
Gwen’s heart sank, and her tone rose involuntarily.
Peter hurriedly said: “Not exactly. I thought the tombstone looked fine, it wasn’t destroyed, but…”
Listening to Peter’s hesitant voice, Gwen’s heart sank again.
“But what?”
“Uh…”
Peter recalled what he saw behind that tombstone before Hawk left: “A grave next to it exploded, and it accidentally affected Hearing Hearing Anya’s grave.”
Oh, crap.
After hearing Peter’s answer, this was the only thought left in Gwen’s mind.
No one understood the weight of Hawk’s sister in his heart better than she did.
If Hearing Hearing Anya hadn’t been resurrected, even if she were to marry Hawk, he would likely still choose to spend Christmas with his sister Hearing Hearing Anya.
That is no exaggeration.
And right now…
After Gwen came back to her senses, her tone was filled with disbelief.
“Hearing Hearing Anya’s grave exploded?”
“What, no, no, no.”
“Peter!”
“It didn’t explode, just the soil covering it was impacted and some of it splashed out. I saw that the coffin and such weren’t exposed.”
“…”
The soil exploded?
How is that any different from the grave exploding?
Gwen’s mouth twitched.
Just then.
Helen’s voice rang out from outside.
“Gwen!”
“Coming.”
Gwen snapped out of it and responded loudly. She then told Peter on the other end, “If you have news of Hawk, remember to contact me,” before hurriedly hanging up. After steadying herself, she opened the door and walked out. As she walked down the stairs of the vacation villa, she asked: “Mom, what is it?”
Before she could finish her sentence.
Having just reached the bottom of the stairs, Gwen saw a familiar face.
Hmm.
Very familiar.
Hearing Hearing Natasha, whom she had knocked out with a club that day, was currently standing at the door, smiling and talking to her mother, Helen.
Seeing this, Gwen’s heart skipped a beat once more.
Helen looked at Gwen coming down the stairs and said with a smile: “Hearing Hearing Natasha said you lent her your car, and she’s here to return it.”
Hearing Hearing Natasha took the opportunity to look at the approaching Gwen with a smile and greeted her.
“Good morning, Gwen.”
“…Good morning.”
Gwen was silent for a moment, responded, and after saying a few words to her mother, she followed Hearing Hearing Natasha, who had come to return the car, out of the house.
In sight.
The yellow Corolla, already repaired and looking brand new, was parked quietly at the entrance.
“Go up and check it out. I didn’t break your car, you know.”
“…”
Listening to Hearing Hearing Natasha’s words, Gwen said nothing. She opened the driver’s side door and sat in.
Hearing Hearing Natasha also followed, sitting in the passenger seat, and closed the door.
Gwen took a deep breath and looked at Hearing Hearing Natasha.
“Are you here to kill me?”
“What?”
Hearing Hearing Natasha was stunned for a moment, then smiled and shook her head: “No, no, no, how could that be? You didn’t kill me back then, how could I kill you?”
Gwen looked at Hearing Hearing Natasha: “But you sent people to kill Hawk.”
Hearing Hearing Natasha shook her head again: “Last night’s attack wasn’t our doing. In fact, if last night’s incident hadn’t happened, I wouldn’t have come to see you now.”
The incident at the Calvin Cemetery last night caught all of New York City off guard.
But S.H.I.E.L.D. was also caught off guard.
Maria Hill never expected that while she was still collecting information and pondering how to make the first peaceful contact,
the military would disregard the rules of engagement and just jump straight into the fray.
Good grief.
You didn’t even conduct a pre-battle assessment, and you just jumped in like that?
And so.
When Maria Hill learned of this, in a flash, there was no time to think about why the military was so brainlessly reckless, and she couldn’t even be bothered to wonder how the military knew about Hawk. She immediately contacted Hearing Hearing Natasha, who had only just returned from Tennessee yesterday and hadn’t had time to rest, and told her to immediately drive the yellow Corolla repaired by S.H.I.E.L.D. in New York to find the only relevant person they could currently locate.
Which was Gwen.
Hearing Hearing Natasha looked at Gwen with a serious expression: “Gwen, we need to know Hawk’s location now. If this matter escalates, it will be difficult to clean up.”
