Chapter 28: Suicune? Wave Water!

~6 min read 1,157 words

Watching the Lilligant leave, Guang Tai shifted his focus to the effect of the craft item.

Another craft item with an event, but why no hint that it’s a hidden event?

It has an effect—hard to grasp at first glance, but clear upon closer thought.

For instance, the word you’re about to spell.

"Wait, won't this stone tablet summon the Unknown Glyph and drag me into a space rift?" Guang Tai first glanced warily around, confirmed no black eyes had appeared, then calmly began spelling.

Suicune—Suicune.

This word is actually a phonetic transliteration from Japanese; the Unknown Glyph’s pronunciation is Japanese romaji.

Having obtained the Transparent Bell craft, Guang Tai’s first Pokémon when thinking of spelling the word was Suicune—he’d just been pondering the creature not long ago.

As leader of the Ho-Oh Guard and closely tied to the Transparent Bell, he had no intention of capturing it; his current strength was likely insufficient to do so. But since the Symbol Tablet could establish some connection with it…

Let me see what the crystal on your head is made of?

The crystal on Suicune’s head. Guang Tai didn’t yet know how to use that crystal gem to craft items—perhaps all he needed was the energy it emitted? Suicune seemed to have moves that fired directly from the crystal on its head.

Ho-Oh was also suspected to be connected to the Unknown Glyph and major ruins in the Johto region; if a link could be established, Guang Tai decided to try plucking a Rainbow Feather from it.

Of course, the original intent behind crafting the Transparent Bell wasn’t to capture these Legendary Pokémon—it was merely to keep searching for better, more miraculous crafting techniques.

“If I can’t find Suicune, I can find a substitute… Ancient Crystal? Or…”

“Wave Water?”

Guang Tai’s mind gradually formed the image of an ancient dragon—this creature bore an extremely similar appearance to Suicune, but its overall style leaned toward a Velociraptor, existing as Suicune’s paradoxical variant, and in the game, it was an event-exclusive Pokémon obtainable only through special events.

Huh

At that moment, the completed Symbol Tablet suddenly glowed—the carved symbols, identical in shape to the Unknown Glyph, blazed with blinding light. Simultaneously, Guang Tai saw the bucket inside the room: the water within, previously murky with impurities, became absolutely pure under the glow.

“Huh? Is this what they meant by a connection?”

Suicune possesses the ability to purify polluted water into absolutely clean sources, known as the embodiment of the North Wind. Though it occasionally has embarrassing moments, this purification ability is uniquely its own—not a move, but a special skill!

Until midnight, Guang Tai reorganized his materials and tools, and sleepiness swept over him.

The workshop’s lights went out; the Soleblade also leaned against the corner to rest—it had worked hard today, having spent a full and pleasant day.

Outside, in the herb field, the Lilligant rested within the soil.

Deep into the night.

Beside the workshop’s workbench, space subtly warped—a palm-sized E-shaped eye emerged from the stopped clock.

Unknown Glyph—Letter E.

“Wei”

Guang Tai had lived here for many days; Unknown Glyph E had been forced from the basement into the workshop, hiding behind cabinets and inside the broken old clock, staying as still as possible—so Guang Tai and the Soleblade had never noticed its presence.

Unknown Glyph E had observed Guang Tai for a long time.

Its eyes fixed on the word “Suicune” on the workbench, then on Guang Tai, asleep and radiating unconscious spiritual energy.

This human’s spiritual power was gradually growing stronger, and it gave Unknown Glyph E several familiar sensations.

Was he an ancient Johto native, an ancient Sinnoh native, or a remnant of the ancient Shen region?

“Wei”

You wish to see Suicune?

But you don’t want to capture it or challenge it—just to see the crystal crown on its head?

What a simple wish.

Then let me help you.

Unknown Glyphs are drawn to strong emotions and can fulfill certain wishes, though the fulfillment comes not from true creation, but from manifesting fragments of the mind—like projecting a dream into reality, yet still exerting real influence on the world.

The glow of awakened power engulfed the small house, wrapping Guang Tai and the Soleblade inside!

In the next instant, the word “Suicune” formed by the Symbol Tablet on the table suddenly began to scramble, rearranging itself into another word.

In a dream.

Guang Tai dreamed of the Burned Tower in Ecruteak.

“Oh, a connection formed?”

Since dreamers rarely realize they’re dreaming, Guang Tai didn’t realize he was in a dream—and this dream linked him and the Soleblade. The man and the sword stared at the Burned Tower ahead and stepped inside.

Guang Tai couldn’t remember how he’d arrived in Ecruteak—hadn’t he left other tasks undone?

That thought lasted only a moment before fading; dreams held too many thoughts, easily suppressing conscious awareness and drowning one in the illusory world built by the subconscious.

Burned Tower—reasonable. In the game, the first time he saw Suicune was inside the Burned Tower.

Legend says it, along with Entei and Raikou, were three unknown Pokémon burned to death in the Burned Tower 150 years ago. Later, Ho-Oh revived them and altered their forms; in gratitude, they willingly became Ho-Oh’s guardians.

The Three Sacred Beasts appear on the basement floor; just as shown in the anime, you can’t see them from the second floor—you must descend the stairs.

Unknown Glyph E also appeared in Guang Tai and the Soleblade’s dream.

As long as you see Suicune, that’s enough?

If you truly wish to see the real Suicune, perhaps there will be another chance later…

It followed Guang Tai as he moved forward in the dream.

At the basement level, a muffled roar echoed from the gloom!

“Right—the Three Sacred Beasts. But what era is this? Why are the Three Sacred Beasts back in the Burned Tower? Or have they never left?”

Guang Tai’s conscious mind began to intrude again, and Unknown Glyph E quickly exerted influence, constructing a plausible dream.

Only Suicune is here in the basement—can’t it just come back to visit?

“Oh, right—it’s just visiting. Very reasonable.” Guang Tai suddenly understood.

Unknown Glyph E: Huh (exhaled in relief)

Anyone searching for truth within a dream must be insane.

But at the basement level, just as the altered dream suggested, only one Sacred Beast emerged from the gloom—its body blue, marked with white blocky patterns, crowned with a massive crystal-like headpiece and two long white ribbons like tails, its body covered in purple manes resembling thick clouds.

Unknown Glyph E: Correct—that’s Suicune.

Guang Tai gasped: “Huh? Wait—that’s not Suicune! This isn’t Suicune!”

“Roar!”

The “Sacred Beast” at the bottom of the Burned Tower stepped from the gloom, roaring—and revealed its full form. It bore an extremely similar appearance to Suicune, but rather than a quadrupedal mammal, it resembled a Velociraptor!

“This is ‘Wave Water’!”
