Chapter 234 - Torment!
The arrow flew across the battlefield as fast as a bullet, and it struck Currway’s left eye dead center, punching through and embedding itself deep in the socket.
Currway didn’t even roar or scream this time. He was too scared of Lena to even express his fury at what had just been done to him. He was not even afforded the dignity of yelling.
His hand covered his face, demonic blood seeping between his claws, mixing with the human blood from all of those he had slaughtered.
"Everyone!" Lumi’s voice was cold. "He’s vulnerable! His guard is down! Press the attack! Don’t let him recover!"
The assault intensified. Warriors closed in from all sides, seeing their chance. Thieves struck from the shadows. Mages unleashed their strongest spells. Archers fired as accurate as they possibly could.
Currway fought back desperately, but injured as he was, his effectiveness was reduced.
A sword bit deep into his thigh, finding the spot where previous wounds had weakened the scales. The blade went in an inch. Another sword opened his shoulder joint, severing something that made his right arm hang slightly lower. A hammer struck his ribs with tremendous force, the blow straining his internal organs now that most of his scales were broken, unable to protect him.
His regeneration was struggling. The wounds stayed open, bleeding. Every time tissue started to knit back together, another attack would tear it open again.
Lumi’s dark gauge hit 100%.
He felt the shift as he entered Convergence. Power surged through him, light and darkness swirling together in his core. The air around him shimmered as both aspects of magic became available simultaneously.
This was it. His ultimate state. But it wouldn’t last long, maybe thirty seconds at most.
"Torment!"
This was his strongest technique. He targeted directly inside Currway’s body.
"Ah-" For the first time, Currway felt a strong sensation of danger. It originated from somewhere inside himself! He didn’t hesitate, and lunged forward outside of the danger zone.
An orb appeared, perfectly balanced light and darkness, neither consuming the other, existing in impossible equilibrium. It was beautiful and terrifying, about the size of a baseball.
Currway back with his remaining eye.
"What..." He couldn’t help himself. Didn’t he personally craft the red orb that wouldn’t allow anyone at the Third Rank to enter this space? Hadn’t he slaughtered over a hundred, and no Third Rank had revealed themselves?
So then, what exactly what this powerful attack then, that made him fear such?
"Torment!" Lumi cast again. There was never a need to stop. "Torment! Torment!" Orbs were continuously created, and for the first time, Currway felt fear.
He finally found the source as he locked eyes with Lumi. He lunged.
"Torment!"
Currway felt danger from up above. But...
Currway quickly made the calculations. Even if Lumi’s damage had inexplicably went up, his defenses nor his evasion would be any better.
The shield bearers were dead, so he continued his lunge, despite knowing he would ram into a dangerous spell.
The orb struck him directly on the crown of his head.
The impact was devastating. Currway was driven to both knees, his legs buckling under the force. The ground beneath him cracked. Cracks appeared in his scales, spreading like spider webs. Some pieces fell away entirely, clattering to the ground.
"GAH!"
He tried to stand. Every single muscle was straining. But a warrior’s hammer struck his shoulder at that exact moment, then another warrior’s axe bit into his other shoulder simultaneously.
He didn’t forget his mission. To kill Lumi. He swiftly shot out with his tail, throwing a sword he had been keeping inside. As expected, Lumi teleported away in an instant.
But he had accomplished his mission. Now, both he and Lumi were out in the open rather than behind trees and foliage.
Currway immediately stole the axe from the warrior and shot it out at shocking speeds.
Then, another Torment Orb stuck him, spawning inside him as his internal organs roared in pain as they began to be shredded.
The combined attacks kept him down, preventing him from rising.
More strikes landed while he was vulnerable. A spear drove into his side between broken armor plates, sinking deep. A sword opened a gash across his back, causing blood to pour. Ranged attacks peppered him from range, arrows, fire, ice, lightning, all finding their mark on his exposed flesh.
Blood flowed freely now. Dark demonic blood pooling in the rotting earth beneath him, mixing with the corrupt soil.
Currway forced his face up. He was looking for Lumi! He stared directly to see the results. Logically, Lumi had no teleport up, nor the speed to react. So did he get him...?
He saw blood spurt, and a figure fell out of the sky with their figure splitting into two.
For the first time, Currway felt the slightest hint of relief. He had finally killed Lumi, probably...
Currway forced himself to his feet through sheer will and centuries of combat experience. His right arm lashed out, catching two warriors and crushing them against a dead tree trunk. Their armor crumpled, as their bodies shattered.
[Wantor Tide has died]
[Ben Bettor has died]
He needed to confirm. He leapt towards Lumi, and along the way, his tail swept through a group of mages who’d gotten too close. The heavy tail caught three, killing them instantly.
[Fina Call has died]
[Ira Ira has died]
[Tenor Cliff has died]
He held on to a greatsword from a warrior, and threw it out like a boomerang towards a distant congregation of bowmen. Though most had dodged in time, it still caught a few who were distracted, or otherwise unable to react in time.
[San San has died]
[Blor Tor has died]
[Tor Brow has died]
[Ran Ran has died]
[Es Pe has died]
Despite their constant deaths, it barely looked as if their numbers were decreasing. The literal only difference Currway noticed was the thinning warriors. The others still existed in droves.
It was torture. For some reason, there were always more.
Endlessly more.
