Chapter 89: An Invitation from the Wealthy Family

~6 min read 1,193 words

He stepped forward, looking like he wanted to attack.

Zhang Jun stared at him coldly, the heat in his body stirring again; this time he looked more closely.

Huang Mao's qi and blood flowed unevenly, especially a spot over his left chest where a faint but especially chilly qi lingered like a small snake.

"Does the spot three cun below your left chest often ache faintly, especially in the late night?"

"Over the past month, has the pain gotten worse, and do you feel palpitations and break out in a cold sweat when you sleep?"

"The hospital finds nothing wrong and says you're just too nervous, right?"

Huang Mao's arrogant expression deflated like a punctured balloon instantly, his eyes full of fear and disbelief.

"You… how…?"

"That's no minor ailment." Zhang Jun said lightly, "Someone has planted a nefarious thing in you; if left untreated, within half a year your heart meridian will rupture and even immortals couldn't save you."

He paused.

"Get out now, and I'll pretend I didn't see anything."

"Next time you come..."

He lowered his voice to an extreme whisper, carrying a chill that made the back of one's neck prickle.

"I don't mind giving you a treatment."

Huang Mao exchanged a glance with his few followers, seeing fear in each other's eyes.

They didn't dare even fart, ignoring the two patients moaning on the ground, and scrambled out of the Hall of Returning Spring.

The farce ended just like that.

Not only did they not smash the clinic's sign, they made Zhang Jun's reputation as a "divine doctor" spread even further, adding a touch of mystery.

The onlookers gradually dispersed, and the clinic grew quiet again.

Zhang Jun had just relaxed, preparing to go back to the rear hall to rest, when a shadow flickered at the doorway.

A stylishly dressed young woman with heavy makeup walked in, her face plastered with a fake smile.

"A Jun! It's really you! I've finally found you!"

Zhang Jun frowned.

Wang Qian, his ex-girlfriend who had been obsessed with marrying a rich man and dumped him.

How did she find her way here?

"What do you want?" Zhang Jun said coldly, finding even a second glance annoying.

Wang Qian's smile froze for a moment, then she forced a warmer one, trying to come over and grab his arm.

"A Jun, don't be like that. I know I was wrong before, my heart was blinded by greed… I truly realize my mistake now. Can we start over? Look, you even have your own clinic now…"

Her eyes flicked over the shabby stall; a flicker of disdain and disappointment flashed deep inside, then was covered by deliberate warmth.

"No interest." Zhang Jun sidestepped her hand, three words, blunt and decisive.

Wang Qian still wanted to cling, when a clear set of footsteps sounded at the doorway.

A young woman in a well-tailored ivory suit, with a refined demeanor, walked in.

She was quite pretty, but her brows and eyes held an aloofness, clearly not from an ordinary family.

Her gaze swept the modest clinic, finally settling on Zhang Jun.

"Excuse me, are you Doctor Zhang Jun?"

Her aura was nothing like Wang Qian's affected "socialite" vibe; it was the natural poise of someone truly well-bred.

Seeing this woman, Wang Qian glanced at the expensive car vaguely parked behind her, her face falling slightly, but she stayed put, forcing herself to stand.

Zhang Jun sized up the visitor.

"It's me. Want a consultation?"

"My father has a stubborn ailment that's lasted years; many doctors have tried and failed." The woman nodded slightly, speaking politely, but her status was evident, "I've heard Doctor Zhang's medical skill is superb, so I've come specially to ask you to see him. As for the fee, you needn't worry—it will certainly not be lacking."

As she spoke, she unintentionally glanced at Wang Qian nearby, then idly looked toward the rear hall.

The rear hall's curtain swayed slightly.

Lin Xue had been standing in the shadows, watching everything that happened outside.

When that woman of obvious high birth appeared—especially as she sized up Zhang Jun, her gaze carrying scrutiny and some indescribable interest—Lin Xue felt the spot in her chest that had just barely warmed seem to catch a faint chill, subtle but impossible to shake.

She lowered her eyelids, her fingers unconsciously twisting a corner of her clothing.

"Do you think it's convenient to go now?" the woman asked again.

Zhang Jun didn't even glance at Wang Qian, sidestepping her as if she were a stain on the wall.

"Let's go." He nodded to the woman in the ivory suit.

Wang Qian's smile froze completely, the forced gentleness shattering, leaving only embarrassment and barely concealed spite. She watched Zhang Jun follow the woman out of the clinic's broken door, her hands clenched tight, nails digging into her flesh.

The car was black, unassuming at first glance, but anyone in the know could tell its price. The driver said nothing and opened the rear door.

Inside was spacious, a mix of leather and faint perfume that shut out the clamor of the old city outside.

"My father is Su Zhenhai." The woman handed over a business card bearing just a name and a phone number, no indication of profession. "I am Su Muqing."

Zhang Jun took it, didn't even look, and slipped it straight into his pocket.

"The old man's condition is quite troublesome." Su Muqing chose her words carefully, her fingers unconsciously rubbing her handbag, "Both Chinese and Western doctors have examined him, numerous tests have been run, yet no one can say what's wrong. His body grows weaker by the day, he fears the cold, lacks energy, and for the past half month he's been unable to get out of bed."

As she spoke, she would occasionally glance at Zhang Jun's expressionless face, with a hint of caution.

Zhang Jun leaned back, eyes closed, the warm energy in his body slowly circulating, dispelling the fatigue of the past few days and sharpening his awareness of his surroundings. He could hear the caution in Su Muqing's words, as well as the urgency and hidden wariness beneath her politeness.

"Rich families have endless troubles," a saying he'd once heard as a joke; now he realized he'd stepped right into it.

The car entered a villa district, guards standing at the gate looking stern. It stopped before a large residence, clearly not an ordinary home.

In the living room, the atmosphere was colder than the weather outside. Several well-dressed men and women sat on the sofa, the air tinged with a strange mix of disinfectant and expensive incense.

As Su Muqing entered, several gazes turned toward her; upon seeing Zhang Jun behind her, their scrutiny became even more evident, mixed with disbelief.

"Muqing, this is the… doctor you invited?" a middle-aged man with gold-rimmed glasses spoke, his tone a bit sarcastic; he is Su Zhenhai's second son, Su Ming.

"Second Uncle, this is Doctor Zhang Jun." Su Muqing simply replied, not saying more.

Zhang Jun couldn't be bothered with their petty squabbles, following Su Muqing straight up to the second floor.
