Chapter 283: Our Hundred-Day Agreement Is Annulled

~9 min read 1,636 words

Zi Heng and Youyou came out of the room, each carrying their small school bags, put them on the sofa, then went to the dining room to have breakfast.

Su Jinru also got up, muttering as she walked: "I stayed up late watching a drama and almost overslept."

Just as her words fell, the doorbell rang; Su Jinru's steps toward the dining room paused: "Who would come over this early?"

Xia Xi naturally knew who it was, picked up a xiaolongbao with her chopsticks, and spoke up to stop Su Jinru before she opened the door: "Don't bother, it's just a delivery person who got the address wrong and insists on arguing with me."

"Really?" Su Jinru said half-believing, half-doubting.

Xia Xi scooped a spoonful of porridge and hummed.

After a while, the doorbell rang again; Su Jinru muttered to herself: "Constantly knocking isn't good; it's better to go out and explain clearly."

She put down her chopsticks, about to open the door, and Xia Xi's forehead twitched: "Really, no need to go."

Xia Yue sensed something was wrong, sat up, and told Su Jinru: "Mom, you stay seated; I'll go check."

Xia Xi looked up: "Eh, sister..."

Before she could be stopped, Xia Yue had already walked to the entryway; before opening the door, she peered through the peephole and saw a familiar face—certainly not a delivery person.

Xia Yue opened the door.

Xu Yanfeng saw that the visitor was Xia Xi's sister, politely nodded, and greeted her.

Xia Yue politely asked: "Have you had breakfast?"

Xu Yanfeng looked inside, knowing Xia Xi was still angry and unwilling to see him, but without seeing her face he couldn't communicate; the messages he'd sent last night seemed to have sunk like stones, and she hadn't replied to a single one.

"Not yet." Xu Yanfeng said.

Xia Yue stepped back half a step, smiling: "If you don't mind, join us; there's plenty."

"Thank you." Xu Yanfeng gave a restrained tug at the corner of his mouth and entered the house.

Xia Yue fetched him a pair of slippers and led him to the dining room.

Seeing him, Xia Xi snorted, actually letting him barge in—thanks to Xia Yue being easygoing.

Su Jinru stared for two seconds, then stood up: "Oh, it's little Xu." As she spoke, she glanced at Xia Xi, a bit puzzled, wondering if Xia Xi, knowing the person outside was Xu Yanfeng, had deliberately said it was a delivery person.

What are these two kids up to?

Xu Yanfeng nodded properly: "Auntie, sorry for suddenly coming to disturb you. Please have a seat."

Youyou waved her little hand: "Uncle, how did you come here?"

Xu Yanfeng first glanced at Xia Xi, then looked at the little girl, with a warm smile: "I'm here to take you and Zi Heng to school."

Xia Yue went to the kitchen to fetch a set of bowls and chopsticks, served Xu Yanfeng a bowl of porridge, and placed it before him: "I don't know if you're used to eating this."

Xu Yanfeng: "I can eat anything."

"I'm full." Xia Xi put down her chopsticks, rose to tidy her room, grabbed her bag, and said: "Zi Heng, Youyou, have you finished eating? We should be leaving."

Hearing that, Xu Yanfeng hastily ate a few biddings, bid farewell to Xia Yue and Su Jinru, and caught up with Xia Xi.

Inside, Su Jinru's brows held worry as she asked Xia Yue: "What's going on with those two?"

Xia Yue, on the other hand, wasn't worried, slowly eating her porridge: "I don't know; just let them be."

In the elevator, Xu Yanfeng tried to pull Xia Xi's sleeve, but with the two kids present he didn't make a big fuss, his voice low as if sleep-talking: "What should I do to keep you from being angry with me?"

Xia Xi gave him an extremely indifferent look and pulled her sleeve away.

Xu Yanfeng leaned in, his tone tinged with pleading: "I didn't sleep all night."

Xia Xi said nothing.

Judging by the time he sent those messages, it was indeed a whole night without sleep, as the span from his first to last message was six hours.

When the elevator reached the first floor, Xia Xi and the two kids went out; Xu Yanfeng spoke from behind: "Didn't you bring your car back last night? Take my car—calling a taxi would be inconvenient."

Mentioning that, Xia Xi recalled yesterday's call she received at Jingyu Yuan, which frightened her so much her limbs went weak, she couldn't drive and had to take a taxi to the hospital. She gave Xu Yanfeng a white-eye look.

Xu Yanfeng seemed not to notice her look, scooped up Youyou and shoved her into the car parked ahead.

Youyou: "……"

Zi Heng, unaware that the adults were quarreling, didn't need Xu Yanfeng to hold him; he climbed into the car himself, sat down, and fastened his seatbelt.

Xia Xi, helpless, could only get in the car.

Xu Yanfeng exhaled in relief, afraid she would just walk away.

Today there was no driver; Xu Yanfeng drove himself, heading to the kindergarten.

After the two kids entered school, only Xu Yanfeng and Xia Xi remained in the car; the atmosphere grew even more tense than before. Xu Yanfeng turned the steering wheel, just as before, first taking Xia Xi to her company.

Xu Yanfeng cleared his throat, glanced at the person behind him in the rearview mirror, and repeatedly apologized: "Sorry, I shouldn't have tested your heart that way." His voice was low, sounding somewhat humble: "Can you make a request? Tell me how to earn your forgiveness, and I will surely comply."

Xia Xi showed a slight reaction: "What you said?"

Seeing her finally willing to engage, Xu Yanfeng's pitch-black eyes flashed with a glimmer—hope's dawn—and he answered without hesitation: "What I said."

"All right." Xia Xi nodded, thought a moment, and stated her demand: "Let's annul our hundred-day agreement; I'll move back with the kids."

Xu Yanfeng: "……"

He never imagined her demand would be this.

Xia Xi tilted her head to gauge his expression; though her angle was limited and she couldn't see him fully, she could tell he was stunned, as if caught off guard. Her heavy mood lightened a bit, her brows lifting: "It's not that you said it—I can make a request, I made one, and you won't agree."

Xu Yanfeng tightened his grip on the steering wheel; he didn't want to go back on his word, but this demand was unacceptable.

If the agreement is annulled, how else could he create opportunities to be with her?

Xu Yanfeng proposed: "Can we change it to something else?"

Xia Xi fell silent again.

Angry as she was, Xia Xi still had a strong sense of contract; she didn't return to Su Jinru's that night. Another reason was that she didn't want to argue with Xu Yanfeng in front of the children.

As kindergarten pickup time approached, Xia Yue called her to ask about picking up the kids.

Xia Xi said: "Oh, I'll go get them, then head back to Xu Yanfeng's place."

Xia Yue laughed on the phone: "You didn't tell me yesterday that you'd be moving back from now on."

"……" Xia Xi choked, speaking hesitantly, "I was just joking."

Xia Yue was very willing: "Okay."

Xia Xi got off work early, picked up the child from kindergarten, and went to Xu Yanfeng's home.

The nanny was preparing dinner in the kitchen; Xia Xi went into her room and worked on the computer.

Jingyu Yuan was about to enter the construction phase; regarding the design part, she could breathe a sigh of relief, but could not be careless; every aspect had to be watched carefully to prevent accidents.

Half an hour later, Xu Yanfeng arrived home.

The two kids had finished their homework and were watching TV in the living room. Xu Yanfeng rolled up his sleeves to his elbows, took some fruit from the fridge, and went to the kitchen to wash it.

Seeing this, the nanny hurried over: "I can handle this."

"You're busy; I'll do it myself."

Xu Yanfeng washed leisurely, then put the washed fruit into two glass bowls—one for the two kids, the other he brought to Xia Xi.

Her door wasn't fully closed, just ajar; Xu Yanfeng knocked lightly as a gesture, then pushed the door open.

Xia Xi sat at her desk, a stack of printed drawings beside her, her finger touching her chin, intently staring at the computer screen, her long hair casually tied into a low bun at the back, looking composed.

Xu Yanfeng's footsteps were light; he stopped at her side-rear, his wet fingers pinched a bright red strawberry from the glass bowl and brought it to her lips.

Xia Xi was sorting the construction drawings; there was a part of the wiring layout that needed to be changed. She only knew someone had come in, but didn't see who. Besides her, only the nanny and the two kids were at home; she didn't know Xu Yanfeng had returned, and naturally assumed it was Zi Heng or Youyou feeding her fruit.

The thing touched her lips; Xia Xi instinctively opened her mouth, took it in, and mumbled, "Thank you, dear."

Her gaze never left the screen.

Xu Yanfeng's thick black eyelashes lowered as he stared at the fingertip stained by her lips, his eyes gradually darkening.

He picked up a small blueberry and continued feeding her.

Xia Xi opened her mouth and bit down; the blueberry was much smaller than the strawberry, she didn't notice, bit his finger, only then realizing something was off; her gaze, stuck on the computer screen, finally shifted, she slowly turned her head to meet an inscrutable face.
