Chapter 369: I Said Thank You, Husband

~9 min read 1,618 words

Xu Yanfeng looked at the marriage certificate while Xia Xi looked at Xu Yanfeng, thinking he was silly and cute, worth taking a photo as a memorial, but she didn't have time to pull out her phone before he had already put the certificate away and turned his head to her: "Where do you want to eat?"

Xia Xi silently slipped her phone back: "You decide." After thinking, she made a request: "Don't be too far from my company."

She still had to work in the afternoon; too far would be inconvenient.

Xu Yanfeng stared ahead, steadied himself, and started the car.

The restaurant was less than a twenty‑minute drive from where Xia Xi worked; Xu Yanfeng ordered a private room. Xia Xi grew thirsty, sat down, and drank two cups of tea first, leaving the ordering to Xu Yanfeng.

This morning just queuing and waiting had taken several hours, but getting the certificate took less than ten minutes—thinking about it was funny.

Xia Xi quenched her thirst, slowed her tea drinking, and suddenly remembered that before getting the certificate Xu Yanfeng had inexplicably looked at her smiling; when she asked him what he was laughing at, he didn't say. She set down her tea cup, waited for the server to leave, rested her chin on her hand, and asked: "Earlier at the Minzhengju, I just woke up, you were smiling at me—what exactly were you laughing at?"

Xu Yanfeng slowly poured himself tea, took a sip, and said: "I laughed because I was surprised you could still sleep at that moment—didn't you have any nervous excitement? Later I noticed your face was all tense when you filled out the form, and I realized I was wrong; you do get nervous, just slower to react."

As if she hadn't expected such an answer, Xia Xi's expression went blank for a few seconds, then she put on a straight face pretending to be angry: "You're the one who's slow!"

Xu Yanfeng smiled and didn't argue with her.

The dishes came a bit slow, but the taste was very good, nothing to complain about, so Xia Xi ate very comfortably. The soup just arrived, steaming hot; Xu Yanfeng took an empty bowl, first served her a bowl, and placed a porcelain spoon inside.

His thoughtfulness was seen by Xia Xi; she swallowed the crispy‑outside, tender‑inside chicken dice and stared at him.

His finger had some oil; Xu Yanfeng took a paper towel to wipe it, looked at her, and said: "The soup is too hot? Wait a bit before drinking."

Xia Xi pursed her lips, held back the urge to lift the corners of her mouth, leaned her head close to him, her mouth almost kissing his ear, still couldn't hold back, and the corners of her mouth rose: "Thank you, husband."

Her voice was light like a flower petal falling on his ear, more like a breeze brushing past; he hadn't had time to feel it before it disappeared.

After a moment of silence, Xu Yanfeng tilted his head to glance at her; she squinted her eyes, eyelashes lightly trembling, her eyes seemed to have starlight flickering, bright and lively. Seeing his reaction, Xia Xi placed one hand on his shoulder: "You didn't hear clearly?"

He heard clearly, but Xu Yanfeng didn't want to admit it; he turned his ear toward her, faced her, expression solemn, but his other hand slowly tightened, his Adam's apple unconsciously rolling down: "Mm, I didn't hear clearly."

Xia Xi also didn't bother to discern whether he truly didn't hear clearly or was teasing her; she cleared her throat, her voice a bit louder than before, leaned close to his ear again, and repeated: "I said, thank, you, husband."

The last four characters she uttered one by one. Don't say he didn't hear clearly again—his ears aren't deaf.

Xu Yanfeng turned his head; his black‑and‑white clear eyes held deep emotion, the corner of his mouth slightly lifted, like a slow‑motion shot in a movie—each change clearly visible—Xia Xi saw that he really liked this address, but maybe he wasn't used to it, his reaction a bit strange.

It's legal; shouting a few more times is fine. Xia Xi smiled: "Husband, you're really good."

Xu Yanfeng hooked his palm around her neck, pressed her over, gave no warning, lips met hers, sucking and kissing. He kissed too fiercely; Xia Xi was firmly held by him, other movements couldn't be made, she could only be forced to kiss him. She "gulped" swallowed a mouthful of saliva, didn't know whose it was, her face flushed red, from afar looking like a ripe apple.

Xia Xi's head felt hot and dizzy, consciousness gradually blurred, dazedly thinking: from now on she should call this address more often, otherwise each time the reaction would be so strong she couldn't bear it.

After finishing the meal, Xu Yanfeng drove Xia Xi to her company with a spring in his face.

Xia Xi sat in the passenger seat holding a mirror to touch up her makeup, especially lipstick, carefully applying another layer. Putting down the mirror, she glanced sideways, about to speak, when his phone rang.

Xu Yanfeng couldn't conveniently answer; he lifted his chin, didn't even glance: "You answer it."

Xia Xi picked up the phone from the storage compartment, lowered her eyes to see the caller ID: "Tang Yizhou is calling." After reporting, she pressed the answer key and turned on speakerphone.

Tang Yizhou's lazy voice came over, not proper: "I said you went to Nanji to get the certificate—all morning no message, did you finish? Tonight why not set a table to celebrate? It's been so long since we last gathered."

Xu Yanfeng looked straight ahead, calmly said: "Finished. Celebration cancelled, no time."

"Xu Er, you're awesome—just got married and already no brothers in your eyes; what else can we hope for from you in the future?" Tang Yizhou also didn't bother with more talk: "Address sent to your phone, the guys are all there, come or not up to you."

Not giving Xu Yanfeng a chance to speak again, that side hung up.

Xia Xi's mouth corner curled up a slight arc, she put the phone back in the storage compartment, and asked Xu Yanfeng: "Do you want to go tonight?"

"Whatever them, not going."

"You should go."

"You want me to go?"

"Didn't I say I'd give you a celebration?" Xia Xi's earlier resentment toward Tang Yizhou had long disappeared with time: "The main person not going—how can they celebrate."

Xu Yanfeng raised his eyebrows slightly, looked at her: "You come with me?"

"Me?" Xia Xi shook her head: "You men gather to drink and chat; what would I do there? I'll stay home with Zi Heng."

"Bring Zi Heng; we three go together."

Xia Xi laughed: "Please, not a parent‑child gathering."

The company was right ahead; the topic ended there. Xia Xi got out of the car, took out two bulging canvas bags from the back seat—inside were the wedding candy she and Xia Xuan bought a few days ago while shopping. She slightly bent over, waved at the people in the car: "Husband bye‑bye."

Xu Yanfeng tilted his head; his smile was obvious on his face, lingering long—he really wanted to grab her back.

The car stopped in front of the office building for a while, then Xu Yanfeng drove off again.

After taking the elevator to the company, colleagues who went out for lunch basically returned; Xia Xi first gave the wedding candy to the front desk.

"Xia Gong, this is…" The front desk was looking at the computer when suddenly a delicate red small box was handed over; one side was transparent, just right to see the candies inside.

Xia Xi smiled slightly: "Wedding candy, please have some."

The front desk covered her mouth, delighted: "Congratulations!"

Xia Xi said thanks, entered the hall, ran into Huang Shiyu, asked her to help send out the rest, thus she received a chorus of "Congratulations." Lu Mingji's share, Xia Xi personally went to deliver.

Lu Mingji on the spot peeled a candy and put it in his mouth; one cheek slightly bulged, sweetness spread in his mouth. Like others, he smiled at Xia Xi and said: "Congratulations."

Xia Xi returned to her office, started handling work, busy until after five in the afternoon; Xu Yanfeng sent a message asking when she would finish; she twisted her slightly stiff neck and replied: "You already arrived?"

Xu Yanfeng: "Not in a hurry, take your time."

The meaning of this sentence is that he had indeed already arrived downstairs of her company.

Xia Xi didn't reply again, clicked on Xu Yanfeng's avatar, gave him a note, then packed her things into her bag, took the elevator down, got into the car, put the bag on her lap, and raised her hand to fan her face.

Seeing she had some sweat on her neck, Xu Yanfeng leaned in to fasten her seatbelt, casually took a paper towel dabbed on her neck: "I said take your time."

Xia Xi recalled the phone call from Tang Yizhou at noon: "How did you come pick me up? No need to attend the gathering? Tang Yizhou said, your several childhood friends are all waiting for you."

Xu Yanfeng naturally said: "You didn't drive this morning? If I don't pick you up, are you supposed to take a taxi back yourself?"

"Taking a taxi back wouldn't be a problem either." Xia Xi gathered her hair, tied a low ponytail; her neck instantly felt much cooler.

"Impossible." Xu Yanfeng slightly raised his chin: "How could I let my wife take a taxi home."

Xia Xi: "……"
