Chapter 388: I Said I Would Call the Police
Xia Xuan gazed at the operating room within arm's reach; fear washed over her head, nearly drowning her whole being.
"Sister..." she swallowed, her throat moving slightly, and said with difficulty, "Miao Yijia invited me out to talk; she said she was pregnant, her emotions were off, then an accident happened, she rolled down from a high flight of stairs, her clothes were soaked in blood, she might..."
She might have miscarried.
Those few words, Xia Xuan couldn't utter.
Hopefully it's not what she thought.
She knew the incident had nothing to do with her; it was Miao Yijia's own carelessness that caused the accident. But after all, she was present, making it hard for outsiders to believe she was innocent.
Hearing her words, Xia Xi fell into thought.
Miao Yijia had an accident at this critical moment; she couldn't help feeling it was a bit suspicious.
"Which hospital?" Xia Xi's voice remained relatively calm, to some extent giving Xia Xuan strength to compose herself.
Xia Xuan pressed the back of her hand against her eyelids, striving to stay calm, and told her the hospital's address.
Xia Xi knew that hospital; it was very close to the residential compound where Su Jinru lived, and not far from Broad and Elegant.
Xia Xi: "Have Miao Yijia's family been notified?"
Xia Xuan: "My mother-in-law… her aunt knows, and I also notified Chen Songbai."
Xia Xi frowned deeply; Miao Cuixia was no easy target, the elderly lady wanted to hold a grandson, and to her Miao Yijia's pregnancy was like a rare protected animal; now that this "protected animal" had met with misfortune, and only Xia Xuan was present at the scene, even if it had nothing to do with her, she was bound to be blamed.
"Don't be afraid, I'll be right there," Xia Xi said.
She had just arrived at the company, hadn't even entered the office, turned and walked out, got into the elevator, reached the underground parking lot, and drove toward the hospital.
It was the morning rush hour; traffic was completely gridlocked, honking rose and fell around her, and occasionally drivers tilted their heads to check the road ahead.
Being anxious was useless; taking advantage of the time, she sorted her thoughts and guessed what trick Miao Yijia was playing—
The child in her belly was not Chen Songbai's, but the product of a one-night stand in a bar; she first used the pregnancy to pressure Chen Songbai's parents into pressuring Chen Songbai to divorce Xia Xuan quickly, knowing the child was a time bomb that couldn't be kept too long—the longer the delay, the more trouble it would cause; rather than secretly aborting, she preferred to use it to frame Xia Xuan, thereby hastening Xia Xuan and Chen Songbai's divorce.
Miao Yijia was quite skilled at scheming.
Xia Xi truly hadn't expected such a lowly tactic from Miao Yijia.
Such plots in TV dramas and novels are usually fake; reality is different, and mishandling could cost a life—how dare Miao Yijia do this? Isn't she afraid that delayed rescue could endanger her life?
However, for the sake of gaining sympathy, she could even slit her wrists; using a miscarriage to achieve her goal is not surprising.
It's just that poor, simple Xia Xuan is about to have filth flung all over her.
Xia Xi pinched her brow, looked ahead, and saw the line of cars like a long dragon slowly moving; she exhaled, kept pace with the crawling vehicles ahead, the road gradually cleared, and she increased her speed.
Although Xia Xuan had first notified Miao Cuixia and Chen Songbai, both were stuck in traffic, so it was actually Xia Xi, who lived nearer the hospital, who arrived first.
After parking, Xia Xi called Xia Xuan to ask exactly where she was, then went to find her.
The two sisters met in the hallway; Xia Xuan rushed over, gripped her hand, eyes slightly red: "Sister."
Xia Xi felt her hand was cold and squeezed it firmly: "It's okay, I'm here."
With her there, Xia Xuan's heart settled considerably.
Xia Xi pulled her to sit on a public bench and asked for details.
"Miao Yijia grabbed my wrist, begging me to divorce quickly, saying the child in her belly needed a father and couldn't wait." Xia Xuan lowered her head, voice low: "I said it had nothing to do with me; what she needed was to persuade Chen Songbai. I've already agreed to divorce, but he refuses. She wouldn't listen, the more she spoke the more agitated she became; somehow she pulled me and changed direction, and the roadside behind her happened to be a flight of stairs; below was a flat patch with a fountain pool in the middle. She didn't notice and tumbled down the stairs, bleeding heavily. I was terrified; the morning-exercising elders gathered around, reminded by them I called emergency services, and then the ambulance arrived and brought her here."
Xia Xuan lifted her gaze to her, eyes glistening, and told her the truth: "Sister, when I heard her say she was pregnant, I felt jealous of her, even hated her." She shook her head: "But I never thought of harming her; I didn't push her—she herself wasn't paying attention, missed a step, and fell."
No need for her to prove her innocence; Xia Xi knew her sister was kind-hearted and would never do anything to hurt someone.
Xia Xi leaned in to embrace her, palm gently stroking her back: "I know, I know, you've done nothing wrong; whatever happens to her has nothing to do with you—don't think so much."
"Mm." Xia Xuan buried her face in her shoulder, voice tinged with nasal congestion.
"What about Jia Jia? Where is Jia Jia, and how is she?"
From the hallway came Miao Cuixia's flustered and anxious voice, accompanied by hurried footsteps.
Xia Xuan's body trembled; she slowly withdrew from Xia Xi's embrace, looked toward the sound source, and met Miao Cuixia's gaunt, wrinkled face, those eyes filled with worry. Behind her followed Chen Songbai, dressed in work attire, clearly having rushed from his workplace.
Mother and son met at the hospital entrance and came together.
As soon as she saw Xia Xuan's face, Miao Cuixia's eyes blazed with fury; she lunged to tear at her. Xia Xi had been on guard, stood up to block Xia Xuan, and firmly shielded her behind her.
Chen Songbai also understood his mother; he reacted swiftly, grabbing her arm.
Because of their obstruction, Miao Cuixia was forced to stop a meter away from Xia Xuan, her eyes nearly bursting as she glared at a corner of Xia Xuan's clothing, shouting resentfully: "What are you dodging? If you're not guilty, why dodge?! Speak! Did you harm Jia Jia? I tell you, if anything happens to my grandson, I will never forgive you! Xia Xuan, I just know your mind is vicious..."
"Mom!" Chen Songbai shouted, cutting her off: "This is a hospital; can you please keep quiet?"
"Get lost." Miao Cuixia thrust her arm forward, but unable to overcome Chen Songbai's strength, she couldn't break free, turned her head and cursed: "Jia Jia is carrying your child, lying in the operating room with life and death uncertain, yet you're siding with another woman—do you want to make me die of anger?"
Chen Songbai's face sank: "That's not another woman; that's my wife."
Xia Xuan, hiding behind Xia Xi, heard that; her eyelashes twitched, and a sour bitterness welled up inside her, hard to put into words.
Miao Cuixia bent her legs and sat on the ground, patting her thighs as she wailed: "What good is giving birth to you? I might as well be dead. Are you blind? How can you not see Xia Xuan's vile face? She's just jealous that Jia Jia is carrying your child; she herself can't bear children, so she harms any woman who could give you offspring. If you don't divorce her, are you trying to end your line?"
Every time Miao Cuixia mentioned "Jia Jia is carrying a child," Chen Songbai's and Xia Xuan's hearts felt as if sliced by a knife, hurting to the point of numbness.
Xia Xi's face was cold as she watched the old woman rolling on the ground, tears and snot streaming, and warned: "Speak with evidence; Miao Yijia knows exactly how she came to this state."
Miao Cuixia wiped her tears, glaring fixedly at the speaker: "Your sister is an executioner, you're still shielding her, you're no good either—your whole family are murderers!"
"Mom, stop saying that!" Chen Songbai couldn't cover her mouth, feeling both angry and helpless.
Miao Cuixia scrambled up from the ground, pulled out her phone from her pants pocket, pointed it at Xia Xi—actually aimed at Xia Xuan hiding behind her—"I'm calling the police to arrest you, murderer! I don't believe there's no law; harming someone else's child and getting away with it."
Chen Songbai snatched the phone from her hand: "What are you doing?"
Miao Cuixia jumped up to grab the phone: "Give it to me, you said I want to call the police!"
Xia Xi remained unfazed and unafraid, staying calm, and said to Chen Songbai: "Give her the phone. Letting the police handle it would be fair and just, so no one can slander with empty words, turning white into black."
