A Selection of Delightful Comments (Thanks to Mr. Baiye)

Over the past two days, the book friend Mr. Baiye has raised many interesting questions, and I have answered them. I find them quite interesting, and in the process of answering, I also revealed some of the novel's settings. Therefore, I am posting this as a separate chapter for those book friends who do not read the comments. Finally, thank you to Mr. Baiye for the questions.

Question: I have a question. I see that the protagonist has always used a foot-combat spear that can be swung directly. Will he use that kind of Knight spear in the future? Or is it the style of the current great spear? Because I feel that the medieval Knight spear is only suitable for charging. In fact, their jousting tournaments are also two Knights charging at each other to see who can knock the other off their horse first. I feel this is specialized for charging and not suitable for swinging. However, if he uses the current style of spear, I feel that when fighting on horseback in the future, he will be at a disadvantage against enemies using Knight spears. How does the author plan to handle this?

Sorry, I'm being a bit long-winded, but I am genuinely curious. Please understand.

Answer: Thank you for the comment. I know you are talking about the lances used for Knight charges, but those were used by Knights in our world's medieval Europe. The design and use of that weapon were prepared entirely for normal Humans; not only the user and the horse, but also the attack target were all just for "normal" use. But in another world, these do not apply. Knight-rank powerhouses who use weapons would find such lances impractical; they are too light and lack impact force because their opponents are generally not ordinary people or ordinary animals.

As for the monster-like warhorses or actual monster mounts that Knights ride, they possess extremely strong load-bearing or carrying capacity, so they can carry one or two Knight-rank powerhouses who are also armored while wearing full sets of armor themselves. These thick, over-spec armors cannot be destroyed by the kind of lance you have in mind. Thus, even if this weapon exists in another world, it would not be a limited weapon. It would be provided more as equipment for Cavalrymen who are not highly valued.

Its use would also shift from countering similar Cavalrymen to suppressing civil riots, because the ordinary people who riot and resist the ruler's rule, firstly, rarely have Knight-rank powerhouses supporting them, or these powerhouses are the leaders and it is difficult to detach them from command missions to fight on the front lines. Secondly, their assets are insufficient to equip large amounts of iron armor, making it difficult to defend against the lance charges of Cavalrymen. So this weapon should be equipped to ordinary Cavalrymen, and its function is singular.

Finally, the weapons used by Knight-rank powerhouses will also be varied, but those of average level will mainly use medium-to-long-range projectile weapons, because most of them are constrained by the high-end Magic Material Weapon production levels around their places of residence, as well as their respective financial levels and sources of Magic Materials. In addition, there is the question of who their respective enemies are, which is also a major issue for every Knight. However, this topic is too broad to elaborate on here.

Question: But I still have doubts. Although the medieval European Knight spear in our world has a certain amount of force during a charge that can dent medieval Knight armor, and because the arm strength of humans in reality is insufficient, they are generally wooden spears, with only an iron spearhead made at the front. And they don't know, nor is it to kill the enemy on the horse, but to knock them off the horse; this is the main goal, because once knocked off the horse, the rest is a massacre. As for fantasy themes, I mainly think that this kind of Knight spear can be modified. First, it can be changed from wood to all-metal, so that the charging power is greatly increased. First, in fantasy themes, Cavalrymen use a wide variety of weapons, but for mounted combat, long weapons still have a certain effect. Those who use axes, swords, or hammers on horseback, I feel, should be like Liu Bei, with hands reaching past the knees, so that there is a certain length. Although it feels like there is no practical value when fighting Magic Beasts, war still needs them, and Cavalry charges are terrifying. So there is still use value.

Answer: You are right. Compared to ordinary lances, if we don't consider projectile weapons, professional melee weapons used by Knights, if you think about it carefully, still need to have a few characteristics.

First, it must be long enough, and it must greatly exceed the size of the mount, so that it can fight enemies at close range over a wide area.

Second, it must be a transcendent weapon. You say your armor has enchantments or blessings, so my weapon must reach the same level.

Third, its form can be diverse, and the source of materials can also have the characteristics of a fantasy world: long horns of Magic Beasts, huge ribs of monsters, a whole straight Magic Tree, and so on.

Fourth, its carrying and usage method must also be considered. Although the mounts of Knights have strong load-bearing capacity and can carry them directly, after all, the human body size is limited. If the weapon is too big and too long, not only is it difficult for the Knight to carry it, but its manipulation during use is also a problem.

I think, on one hand, as you said, changes can be made to the Knight themselves to actively adapt to upgraded lance-type weapons, such as growing an extra pair of arms to control the lance in addition to the common use of sword and shield. Or their arms could stretch at will like Luffy or Mr. Fantastic, so that when there is no powerful lance, they can use other types of weapons to fight enemies of the same Knight rank. My weapon is not as long as yours, but my arm is long, so I can still fight.

Besides that, what would be the repositioning of upgrading the lance? I think that besides just knocking enemies of the same rank off their mounts, its more important role is a melee kill. It must have the ability to kill other Knight-rank Warriors. Curses, mass changes under Magic effects, forced spatial exile upon contact, material disintegration, anti-Magic Power, anti-armor, tracking Magic positioning markers—all these can cause a kill. Not only that, general Magic attacks can also be included.

Only these important functions that can change the battlefield situation can reflect the role of melee weapons. Otherwise, if everyone is riding highly mobile mounts and fighting the entire time using arrows, Crossbow Bolts, or Throwing Spears, wouldn't that be more reasonable? Although reality is boring. I have already thought of the reason: arrows, Crossbow Bolts, and Throwing Spears have limited volume, making it difficult to apply complex, high-level Magic Power blessing effects to them for projectile use, and it is too expensive and wasteful. Reusable melee weapons are just fine.

Question: Hmm, the weapons are similar to Dark Souls, with a bit of a fantasy theme. The production materials are varied, and the final weapons are also varied. I understand what you mean. In this worldview, common configuration weapons cannot be mass-produced, at least in the Kingdom where the protagonist currently lives, because I saw that Knight powerhouses have not reached a universal level of strength. Although it may be because the location is remote, it is easier to explain that it is a feudal system; without a unified central system, it is impossible to mass-produce weapons. And the Knight spear I mentioned is a mass-produced weapon, mainly used for large-scale Knight charges. Knight-rank powerhouses, according to your statement, mostly use long-range weapons like Throwing Spears, bows, and Crossbows, fighting in circles by shooting from horseback, and then engaging in melee combat after running out of ammunition. But what I want to say is that this kind of guerrilla-like combat method cannot have too many people; it's like elite troops against elite troops, and can only be used for small-scale combat. If two armies are fighting, no matter what, there should be ten thousand people, right? In this situation, how could they possibly conduct long-range attacks? It's not modern trench warfare. At most, at the beginning, there are Magic Cannons or Magic attacks, and the rest is cold weapon combat. So Knight charges are used in this kind of place, although looking at the current plot, it is difficult for large-scale wars to appear. Moreover, the main purpose of a Knight charge is to clear out Soldiers, right? It's impossible for every Knight to be a Knight-rank powerhouse, right? And a Knight charge does not necessarily rely solely on the momentum brought by speed; it can also have some magical characteristics. For example, if a few Knights gather together, they will use Life Energy to produce something like a group skill. The more people, the higher the attack power.

Answer: Thank you, thank you. What you said is very good, it makes me very excited. I feel it is great to be able to discuss these things with book friends. Let me explain it to you bit by bit. First of all, in the setting, those who fight on horseback are divided into Knights and Cavalrymen. This is very important. Knights are a type of lowest-level land Noble composed of Knight-rank powerhouses. Because their strength is far beyond that of ordinary Humans, they already possess the ability to break the traditional feudal society at the most basic level of violence.

It is impossible not to let them participate in the distribution of power, so in order to win over and appease these people, they must be designed as basic low-level Nobles. From the bottom up, other low-to-mid-level Nobles will naturally possess the strength of Knights. This change will continue until the Noble's financial resources increase to a certain level. Because some wealthy Nobles who are under the shroud of the God of Nobility can obtain the strength to counter and suppress Knight-rank Warriors through other means (including but not limited to Magic Tools, Magic Bloodlines, holding positions in the church, etc.).

In addition, when reaching a higher Noble level, greater power itself can suppress Knight-rank Warriors. After all, when your subordinates are all Knight-rank Warriors, you, who hold power, naturally do not need to worry about a certain Knight harming you, because other Knights under feudal rule will pledge loyalty or spontaneously maintain feudal ruling rules for the sake of power balance and growth. This is a basic setting that exists in the Kingdom where the protagonist is located and some other scattered Kingdoms and parts of the Empire. It is also some of the foundations in the novel.

There are also vast areas ruled by academies, and areas where the church of the gods replaces feudal rule, but the social structure there is very different. I won't go into detail here. Let's continue to talk about Knight combat. You think that large-scale Knight charge battles will occur, but I think this event itself is unlikely to happen. Let me analyze it for you carefully.

First of all, I don't know if you understand the combat range of modern armies. It's like this: due to the large-scale use of rifles, machine guns, and artillery, the line formations and "standing in line to be shot" era of the early modern period have long since passed. The reason is that the attack range of Soldiers has increased significantly. Similar to the full-power rifle cartridges used by Mauser rifles, when fired from a rifle, without considering accuracy, they have enough lethality even with parabolic trajectories at two to three thousand meters away. Within precision shooting range, a range of several hundred meters can be attacked by highly skilled Soldiers. This leads to a very wide combat range for a small squad of Soldiers. In field combat, in order to ensure fire density, basically a small group of Soldiers can control a circular area with a radius of three to five hundred meters centered on them.

Turning back to the novel, Knights do not have rifles, but they have the ability to use all-metal bows to shoot metal arrows that are completely inferior to rifles and machine guns. And because their eyesight is superb and their arms are extremely precise, in terms of striking, without considering continuous shooting, their bows and arrows are far stronger than rifles. I suppose you have already anticipated that Knights with such a wide attack range will certainly not all gather together, because in this way, they would wastefully lose a large amount of battlefield control range.

Moreover, Knights gathering together will also greatly waste their respective firepower. This is not even considering the Magic problem that follows. Let's make an analogy: two Knight Orders are facing each other. Suppose they do not conduct large-scale guerrilla confrontation and only fight to eliminate the other side. Thus, on a plain, two Knight Orders of two hundred Knights each are fighting on horseback. One side gathers together, using strong bows and lances, and primarily uses lances. The other Knight Order disperses its team, dividing into small squads of five, forty groups in total.

When the lance Knight Order attacks in a group, the opposing bow-wielding Knight Order directly disperses into forty small squads, spreading out to the left and right wings to surround the lance Knight Order. Although the lance Knight Order will also use bows and arrows to fight back, gathered together, the lances in their hands have no opponents that can be attacked in clusters.

The other side simply does not take the bait of the lance Knight Order, and in the long-range bow and arrow exchange, the lance Knight Order gathers into a ball in order to exert the power of the lances. Although collective shooting can effectively kill the distant bow-wielding Knight Order squads with a volley, they can only eliminate one or two squads of the bow-wielding Knight Order at a time, while the bow-wielding Knight Order can shoot at the surrounded lance Knight Order from all directions. Considering the density of the lance Knight Order, in terms of shooting effectiveness, the bow-wielding Knight Order is much higher than the lance Knight Order.

That's roughly it. Next, I will talk about the second problem of large-scale Knight warfare. That is, are there that many Knight-rank powerhouses? Consider, including Kendall Baron who also has Knight-rank strength, how many Knights are in the County under the Baron's command?

The answer is 7. So what is the maximum number of Militia teams that Kendall County can organize?

The answer is beyond imagination: it is over six thousand people. This excludes women who are also tough and have excellent physical strength, as well as old people who cannot fight, and teenagers who cannot master a Spear. The last question: 7 Knight-rank powerhouses fight against six thousand people, without considering terrain and logistics factors, who will win?

The answer is the 7 Knight-rank powerhouses.

Here I will analyze it. First, the most important point: the Militia do not have weapons that can effectively harm the Knights. The Militia's bows and crossbows are okay against Farmers or Bandits, because these people do not have enough armor. And their bows and crossbows have decent power, and can kill or shock iron-armored Cavalrymen in large-scale shooting, but against Knights who are fully armored in very thick steel armor, both man and horse, the Militia's bows and crossbows simply cannot harm the other side.

Secondly, it is the reason for mobility. The Militia rely entirely on their legs to move, while the Knights on the opposite side all ride warhorses that are monster-like and exceed ordinary horses. Not only can the Militia not catch up with the Knights in a certain period of time in terms of movement speed, but it also results in the Knights always having the initiative in combat. They can launch attacks at any time, and they can fight if they want and retreat if they want. The Militia can only regroup to save their lives after chasing for a certain period of time.

Third, it is the problem of attack distance. The Militia's bows and crossbows have already been described in detail in the previous suppression of the Thieves of Luodai Cave. It can be seen that most of the Militia's bows and crossbows shoot within a range of no more than one hundred meters. This is partly because of the terrain of the mountains and forests at that time, and also because the bows and crossbows used by the Militia are weapons mass-produced by Craftsmen in the Craftsman District, which lack shooting accuracy and shooting aiming methods, only using primitive sights to shoot within one hundred meters. The excellent performance in the story was achieved by some Refining Qi Militia. As for the Spear Militia, which were less described, everyone can slightly feel their bow and crossbow performance.

Fourth, the small number of Knights ensures their command and morale problems. Because the number is only 7, they can strongly execute planned schemes. Even if the Militia have a good command system, it takes a while from the Commander issuing an order to the response of the six thousand grassroots combat teams. The time gap between this is enough for the Knights to launch a battle, achieve results, and then retreat through a whole set of combat processes.

And as time passes, the Knights' morale will only rise, and their combat power will actually continue to rise before their physical strength is exhausted. On the other hand, for the Militia, as a large number of people are killed, morale will only decrease, not increase, and as the number of deaths exceeds the psychological threshold of the Militia, who are mostly illiterate, they will collapse and flee as a whole team at any time when the command system is poor.

Fifth, it is the Baron's Magic Crown. Book friends who read carefully may have noticed that the Baron's eldest son has a very powerful and versatile Magic Crown. Considering the different descriptions of the Magic Crown between the Baron and his eldest son when they both appeared, the Baron's Magic Crown is far stronger than his son's.

Let's not explain the power of the Magic Crown for now, let's talk about the origin of that thing. The Kendall Baron Family itself comes from the Empire. Although they were not Nobles before migrating from the Empire, judging from the design and construction of the Kendall City sewers, it is known that the Kendall Family is a technocratic family with relevant water conservancy construction technology. They are skilled in designing and organizing people to build complex precision water conservancy projects including Magic operations. This can also be seen from Kendall Baron's long-term service in the Province Capital as the person in charge of water conservancy construction for the entire province. They have technology behind them and are connected to Mages. Naturally, after becoming a Kingdom Noble and making Kendall City get on the right track with high income, they obtained a valuable Magic Crown through the family's Mage connections.

It seems I have gone off-topic. Back to the main point: since a small number of elite Knight-rank Warriors can defeat a large number of Soldiers composed of ordinary people, the question arises: how will a normal war like the one in the story actually be conducted?

First of all, ordinary Soldiers are still needed. Why? Because the purpose of war is not for the sake of war, but a means of politics. Politics is for the participants of politics to gain benefits, so the ultimate goal of war is to let the participants of politics gain benefits. It is not to conduct war for the sake of war.

So when considering the purpose of war in a feudal country, we know that for feudal land lords, land and the people on the land are the purpose for which they launch wars. Although ordinary Soldiers cannot beat Knights, they can beat the people. To rule a piece of land, you basically need some Soldiers to control the people on the land.

These things are complicated and need to show existence. It is impossible for members of the feudal society, the Nobles, i. e., the Knights, to do it. They are the beneficiaries of war and can use time and energy to participate in war, but it is impossible for them to do everything themselves in ruling the land. These things must be handed over to ordinary Soldiers to complete.

Secondly, if ordinary Soldiers participate in the war, do they just occupy the land after the Knights have fought? Not really. As I said before, a territory the size of Kendall County only has 7 Knights, so even if one Kingdom launches a war against another Kingdom, it is not something that can be decided by a battle between hundreds of Knights.

Not only is it too much of a farce, but a King cannot mobilize his country like this. Modern society cannot achieve this level of mobilization, let alone another world under a feudal system. Although similar outrageous wars occurred in the Spring and Autumn period of ancient China, that was only in a period when social and military levels were still very backward.

Therefore, in the story, in large-scale wars, considering the actual situation, it will be a war where various Noble Lords lead a few Knights and more Soldiers, scattered without mutual support and cooperation.

Lords may have common war interests, but when they fight, they do not belong to each other, and it is impossible to unite to fight unless coordinated by a higher-level Noble. But high-level Nobles cannot directly command a certain Knight and the Soldiers under that Knight. Knights under the same Noble will cooperate in a small range, but cooperating with Knights under other Nobles is simply impossible.

This is a matter of principle under the feudal lord Noble system.

Therefore, looking at it this way, the combat power of the Knight Order directly under the Kingdom will far exceed that of the various lords below. Of course, the Noble Lords will not let themselves be manipulated by the King. In terms of financial resources, due to the Noble Lord system, the King exceeds the Noble Lords in rank, but it is difficult to determine a winner between the two in terms of wealth. After all, there is only one King, while there can be many Noble Lords whose strength is not inferior to his. The King can form a Knight Order in the name of the country, and the Noble Lords can naturally form their own smaller-scale Knight Orders; the number of people does not need to be large, just a few dozen knights directly under the Noble Lord will do.

When the overall strength of multiple Noble Lords is equivalent to that of the King, with everyone fearing the consequences and sharing a common fate, a balance of power at the military top of a country emerges. It seems I have digressed again. In short, large-scale wars will happen, but battles between large-scale knights, such as those involving thousands or tens of thousands of people, perhaps will not happen?

I have another good idea. Perhaps such battles will happen, but not in the real world; what about the world of the dead? The world after death? After the strong die, their souls return to the Divine Kingdom of their respective gods. Over a long period, how much strength have the various gods actually accumulated? Let's write up to here for today. Having said so much, I probably won't be able to update today. Sorry, everyone.

Question: What I am asking is, are there any countries similar to the Empire with a centralized system? If it's that kind, mass-producing weapons shouldn't be a problem, right? And didn't you say this world's Magic is highly advanced? Then there should be Magic guns, right? Or something similar to a Magic Beast?

Answer: There are definitely centralized feudal countries similar to the Empire, but they are not necessarily Human countries. Humans having one Empire is already enough for them to deal with. For an Empire of that level, mass-producing Magic weapons is naturally not a problem, but who would produce the Magic weapons?

This is a big problem. The status of Mages is higher than that of Knights, and Knights are already so difficult to deal with; it is naturally very difficult for the Empire to make Mages work as laborers to mass-produce Magic weapons.

I will keep you in suspense for now; the Empire's Mages cannot accept the Empire making them mass-produce Magic weapons, but what about non-humans?

Why use a gun to cast Magic? I understand what you mean: a convenient, fast-releasing equipment for lethal Magic. It has actually already appeared in the novel; do you need me to remind you?

Question: Why are there no guns? Didn't you say the Magic civilization is highly advanced? At least there should be firelocks! And why don't you post long comments directly? Reading it paragraph by paragraph is very uncomfortable! You didn't even see the comment I just posted below.

Answer: There is no way around it; I am using the Author Zone's interaction management to reply to your questions. Here, each reply can only be at most 150 characters, not one more.

I don't like typing on my phone to log into Qidian Reading; I always use a keyboard. This way, the typing speed can be just about consistent with my thinking speed. I don't have to think about a bunch of things in my head and then fail to write them out.

Additionally, regarding the gun question, as an amateur—the most amateur—military enthusiast, I can briefly answer you.

A so-called gun is a device that uses the expansion of gunpowder gas to push and accelerate a projectile or warhead inside a barrel to launch it. Regarding the gunpowder gas part, modern technology can already use electromagnetic force to push the projectile instead of gunpowder gas to do work.

Among these, the power of the weapon is related to the weight and type of the projectile, whether it contains internal explosives, the length and sealing degree of the barrel, the number of rifling grooves in the barrel, the degree of friction between the projectile and the rifling, the quantity and type of gunpowder in the fixed ammunition of the bullet or shell, the sealing degree, and the number of projectiles fired by the firearm per unit of time and the hit accuracy of the projectiles.

It is stated quite simply, but in my understanding, it is about this much.

Bringing this into the novel, it is not that modern or contemporary firearms cannot appear; after all, although the development of firearms in the real world is complex, it is not extremely complex. The most fundamental reason is, why must there be guns?

The real world developed firearms because, with the development of technology, it had to invent firearms, as Humans only had this one simple weapon route to take. You ask why modern Europe didn't invent a plasma weapon, or a laser weapon, or a particle beam weapon, or a radiation weapon in the 15th or 16th century? To put it simply, during the Second Industrial Revolution, inventing an electromagnetic weapon similar to the Magnetic Tesla Trooper in Red Alert would also have worked.

The only reason is that the difficulty of developing these weapons is too high. Even in modern times, there are not many types of equipment deployed for actual combat. Therefore, in the other world of the story, those Mages are all human-shaped mobile artillery platforms; it is difficult for them to have the motivation to develop a gunpowder weapon that does not rely on Magic Power for others who cannot use Magic.

Even weapons like bombs are unlikely to appear. Because the explosive power that explosives can achieve, fire Magic in Magic can naturally also achieve.

A Magic Gem Arrow embedded with high-power fire Magic, shot by an Elf archer who has mastered superb Magic shooting techniques—how is that different from a 155mm self-propelled howitzer firing?

You might say that a self-propelled howitzer uses rocket-assisted projectiles and can hit targets sixty or seventy kilometers away at once, but the Elf archer prays for the blessing of the gods, lets the Arrow lose its weight, and then casts Magic himself, letting a small sprite ride on the tail of the Arrow. After the Arrow is shot, the sprite pushes the weightless Arrow all the way along its tail. Then, he activates the Magic bow, letting the Arrow be shot from his hand at a high speed.

Such an Arrow might be able to fly in the sky for days and nights, and finally, when the sprite sees the target, it pushes the Arrow to land, jumps off, and spends days and nights slowly flying back to its master.

And the Magic Gem at the tip of the Arrow can be replaced with any kind of Magic effect, far exceeding real-world shells that can only have a few functions. For example, the Gem at the front of the Arrow could be freezing Magic, or a guidance source to guide Mages far away to release large-scale disaster Magic to attack the target, or it could be a spatial teleportation marker, instantly teleporting a group of Knight-rank Warriors armed to the teeth to raid the enemy leader with the landing of the Arrow as the center.

Similar effects are infinite. The possibilities of Magic far exceed any weapon in the real world. So sometimes I don't really like reading novels where the real world crushes the other world; I feel that since it is an other world, why must one deliberately lower the development level of the other world for the sake of the story's thrill?

If they really fought, the Magic world could easily send out some assassins who can remain invisible, assassinating leaders and commanders on a large scale. Considering the strength of the leaders on both sides, the real world simply wouldn't be able to win. You might say use nuclear weapons, but the gods of the other side with similar strength wouldn't just fly directly into outer space and intercept them directly in outer space during the mid-course flight of the ballistic missiles.

Therefore, I think if you consider it carefully, the real world only has highly developed social and management systems that are far superior to the traditional other world. It is very difficult to win a fight, but in terms of learning after contact, the real world has a learning, implementation, and execution ability that the other side cannot match. Because of the strength of the strong in the other world, it is difficult for them to unite to do anything, but the real world can conduct high-speed information exchange and reach a consensus to turn defeat into victory.

Question: Then you need to create some weapons with more Magic characteristics, different from the real world, which tests imagination. The weapons with Magic characteristics I am referring to are not bows or crossbows, but Magic weapons similar to guns but different from guns. From shape to essence, completely original, which tests imagination and creativity. So I recommend you use guns; in fact, it is a more convenient behavior. After all, most people cannot imagine things that do not exist at all in reality; you will be more or less influenced by some things in the real world.

Answer: Hehe, actually it's not that troublesome. In the part where Kendall Baron appears to conduct Militia training, and the part about the Gryphon Knight who is not young but very beautiful a few days ago, I have actually already hinted at the appearance of similar weapons. To put it bluntly, it is the Magic Short Staff at their waists. If a Magic weapon for combat is made into a Short Staff and held in the hand, can't it be used directly as a long or short gun? As for the aiming problem, it can be the user's visual guidance.

Finally, thanks to Mr. Baiye for the comment. Being able to post comments with everyone reminds me of a post I saw on A-site today, the content of which is that the spirit of everyone on the internet in the early years is missing in the recent internet.

Indeed, I also have this feeling, and I also have some views that coincide with the netizens in the post, but I won't say much here.

But after reading that post, I saw Mr. Baiye's comment in the Author Zone. After replying, I was very happy, feeling like I had found the feeling of the early internet again. It's really nice.
