Chapter 515: Entanglement inside the North Gate Guard Post
Two warriors with shields advanced, rendering the enemy soldier's two consecutive arrows futile; at this moment, the warrior using a Changdao approached rapidly, drawing his blade to execute a horizontal slash before the enemy could fire a third arrow.
The slender blade unleashed a horizontal slash, instantly forcing back any intentions the defeated soldier might have had.
Immediately, the defeated soldier threw the soldier bow in his hand at the warrior using the Changdao, drew his long sword, and launched a series of slashes.
The Changdao warrior held his weapon with both hands, his mouth wide open as he let out a short shout, putting force into his blade to clash head-on with his opponent. He gauged the direction of the opponent's sword swing and swung his blade in the opposite direction to collide with it.
Clang, clang, clang—clang!
Sparks flew everywhere, but the Changdao was ultimately powerful and heavy, and its greater length gave it the advantage in the clash. The Changdao warrior exerted his final strength, directly knocking the enemy's long sword away, and then swung his blade down.
The Changdao slashed down from the direction of the enemy's left shoulder, but it was quickly blocked by the soldier armor on the enemy's body; some of the metal plates were cut open, while others were left with scratches on the surface. Clearly, a sharp weapon like the Changdao was not very effective if one could not find the weak points in armor.
The enemy soldier gritted his teeth to endure the pain, drew his personal dagger with a bloodied palm, and thrust it forward with force.
The Changdao warrior hurriedly retreated two steps while swinging his blade twice, aiming specifically at the enemy's unprotected hands.
Swish—
Fresh blood splattered, and fingers and palms were severed and fell, but the remaining fingers and the mangled palm were still gripped in his hand, stabbing toward the Changdao warrior.
"Block it!" a shout came from his side.
Aoni rushed out from behind the Changdao warrior, his shield firmly blocking the path of the dagger's attack even before the shout had finished. Thud! The surface of the shield was pierced by the dagger, but it only made a small hole and proved futile.
Aoni's long sword, held in his right hand, followed behind the shield in his left; knowing the enemy wore sturdy soldier armor, he used his long sword as a blunt weapon, smashing it with force onto the enemy soldier's outstretched arms, then followed up with a kick to knock the enemy to the ground.
Immediately after, the warrior using a single-handed axe who had been following Aoni leaped out, holding the axe with both hands, and slashed down with force toward the neck of the fallen enemy.
Everyone had noticed that there was no protection on the enemy soldier's neck; of course, they were the same themselves.
Therefore, the attack was aimed specifically at this vital point of the enemy!
With a squelch, the enemy's entire neck was severed. The warrior using the axe was extremely excited and immediately began to shout: "Who does this enemy count for? Me?"
But no one paid him any mind; the warrior using the Changdao and Aoni had already taken off, running at full speed toward the enemy's north gate guard post.
Because the cunning Weier had already bypassed the blocking enemy soldier from the direction under the wall and rushed directly into the open north gate guard post via the wooden ladder beside it.
There was still one enemy left in there!
"Hey, hey, hey! Who does this guy count for?"
The warrior using the single-handed axe was still shouting, but seeing his two companions ignoring him completely, he had no choice but to pick up the enemy's severed head, holding the axe and the head in one hand, while using the other to rip the metal helmet off the enemy's head and put it on his own.
He didn't even care about the fresh blood staining the helmet and put it directly on his head. But the defeated soldier's head was a bit small, and for a moment, he couldn't get the helmet onto his own head.
He exerted himself fiercely, risking tearing out some of his own hair to forcibly put the ill-fitting enemy helmet on his head.
Afterward, seeing that his other companions had all entered the north gate guard post one after another, he knew he was likely out of luck this time, so he bypassed the north gate guard post, went down and then up the stairs on both sides of the gate, and came around to the wooden wall on the northeast side of the Cunzi.
He tied the severed enemy head to his belt by its hair, and with his axe and shield in hand, he cut quite an intimidating and fierce figure.
"Ha! Come and fight to your heart's content!" he shouted toward the front.
Unfortunately, there were no enemy soldiers in the wall guard post in front of him, nor in the next one, and what about the one after that?
Oh, there was someone this time, but unfortunately, that enemy had drawn a soldier bow and began firing arrows at him from a curved distance of over a hundred meters.
The warrior using the axe had no choice but to raise his shield and quickly hide behind the wooden wall of the guard post in front of him.
He wanted to rush out and get close to the enemy, but the enemy fired arrow after arrow; although they weren't very accurate due to the distance, they were actually dangerous precisely because they were inaccurate. Who knew if an arrow might miss his shield and strike his knee or lower leg, or hit his face or helmet above the shield.
The enemy's helmet might barely block the incoming arrows, but what if one hit his face?
Wouldn't his 'mighty and imposing' face be disfigured?
Weier was feeling smug about his own cleverness, but as soon as he rushed inside the gate guard post, he was stunned, because besides a defeated soldier who was pounding on a metal sheet to sound an alarm that could be heard throughout the entire Cunzi, two enemy soldiers had also happened to rush in from the opposite side of the guard room to provide support.
The three enemies opposite him froze for a moment, then rushed toward Weier together.
They not only wanted to kill this reckless fellow Weier, but also needed to quickly close the wooden door here and block it from the inside. Because the enemy soldiers didn't know exactly how many people were attacking them—it could be thirty or fifty, or it could be one or two hundred. So to survive, they had to seal this place off and defend it.
Weier had a mind to retreat, but he worried that he would be looked down upon by the others in the team, which would make it even harder for him to operate in the team of Knight Jier in the future.
With no other choice, Weier gritted his teeth and silently recited the name of the 【Gantnier】 family in his heart, hoping to gain spiritual support.
Instead of retreating, he advanced, holding his sword sheath in his left hand and wielding his long sword in his right to parry the attack of the enemy closest to him.
Clatter, clatter, Weier backed against one side of the small wooden door, but not too far away, first letting his back get close to the room wall so he wouldn't have to worry about attacks from behind, while the range of his long sword swings could cover the entrance of the wooden door, not giving the enemies a chance to close it.
Weier knew he only needed to hold off the enemies for a dozen seconds, because his companions would arrive soon. By then, it would be four against three, and they would be sure to win.
"Close the door quickly!"
One enemy shouted, his long sword rapidly stabbing continuously toward Weier, just to force Weier away from the doorway and create an opportunity for his companion to close the door.
But the sword in Weier's hand was faster; not only did he parry the several swords thrust by the defeated soldier, but he also unleashed a horizontal slash with his long sword, forcing back the soldier who wanted to close the door.
"Kill him first!"
The third defeated soldier, holding an axe, suddenly flashed out from behind his companion, holding a wood-chopping axe with both hands and slashing straight down.
Weier had no armor and no shield, only a steel sword, and he couldn't possibly block a heavy cleave from an axe held with both hands.
He didn't foolishly block it head-on either, or rather, Weier ignored this enemy; he suddenly stooped down, and after parrying an enemy's long sword with his own, he lunged straight to the right toward the defeated soldier who had been trying to close the door.
The sword sheath in his left hand was thrown out first, smashing into the enemy's face.
Afterward, it appeared his long sword in his right hand was going to give the enemy a hard blow, but this was a feint.
Weier's wrist twisted forcibly, changing direction midway, and in an instant, he knocked aside the enemy's weapon, leaving a narrow gap for himself to move.
Weier then rushed behind this enemy, spun around, and delivered a kick, slamming the enemy's backside forward and causing him to sprawl at the entrance of the wooden door.
With this, the enemy instead became the biggest obstacle to closing the door. To close the door, one would have to move this defeated soldier away first.
But in just a few seconds, Aoni and the others would arrive.
"Ha!" Weier actually laughed at this moment, because he was excited by this ingenious way of breaking the deadlock. His tense body seemed to relax a bit as well, and he quickly swung his sword twice, once again parrying the attack of the sword-wielding enemy.
"If I were you, I'd abandon my companion and run for my life."
With a taunt, Weier dodged the enemy's axe again, his footsteps light and nimble as he retreated, using the various supply crates, wooden tables, and stinking sleeping mats in the room to maneuver and fight against the two enemies.
The soldier who had sprawled on the ground just climbed up, and before he could even pick up his dropped weapon, he reached out to close the door, but a Changdao thrust forward swiftly, piercing into his wrist and destroying all the tendons and blood vessels in one of his hands.
It turned out that the warrior using the Changdao had arrived a step ahead of Aoni because his weapons and equipment were light.
After the Changdao thrust straight forward to sever the enemy's wrist, the Warrior took advantage of the momentum to twist the Changdao and slash toward the Defeated Soldier's neck.
But the enemy raised their other hand, blocking the path of the Changdao's swing. The enemy's forearm was protected by Metal Armor Plate; unless the Changdao was a Heavy Cleave, it could not break the enemy's Plate Armor.
The two remained deadlocked just like that.
The Changdao Warrior gripped the hilt with both hands, exerting force to push the Changdao closer to the enemy's neck. The Defeated Soldier also gritted their teeth and exerted force, using the armor on both forearms as support to firmly resist the enemy's advance.
At the same time, the Soldier also stretched out a leg, trying to hook the edge of the wooden door to close the wooden door used for entry and exit.
"Why waste so much effort on him! Get in there!"
Aoni strode over, raised his Shield, and slammed into the enemy Soldier with his full body weight, crashing into them like a wild bull; the two of them charged into the gate guard post together.
The Changdao Warrior pulled back his strength and took a step back the moment Aoni arrived to charge; after Aoni crashed into the person and charged inside, he also took a deep breath, dodged, and charged in.
With this, it was three-on-three in the room.
"Why did you guys take so long to get here!"
Seeing that reinforcements had arrived, Weier complained loudly.
Although he complained with his mouth, in reality, the two enemies could not pose a fatal threat to him; parrying left and right, moving his feet, and utilizing the stairs, wooden tables, and crates in the room, Weier could still hold out for quite a while.
"You might as well ask yourself why you always charge so fast!"
Aoni used his Shield to pin the Defeated Soldier beneath him, completely suppressing the enemy with his height and weight. He didn't use any other methods, instead using the pommel of his Long Sword like a hammer to smash hard into the enemy Soldier's face.
Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang—while he smashed, he still had time to answer Weier's complaint.
The suppressed Soldier still wanted to push the enemy off their body, but after being smashed hard a few times, their hands lost strength; after a few more strikes, the Soldier's face caved in.
The upper incisors and canines, along with the lips, were all smashed off; the nose and cheeks also caved in toward the head, and even the bridge of the nose and the eyes were smashed and sunken.
Mucus and blood flew everywhere, and bone fragments and broken teeth splattered.
This shows just how insufficient a Defeated Soldier's Helmet is when it lacks face protection or a Faceplate during close-quarters combat. To say nothing else, a single heavy punch to the nose is enough to make a Soldier wearing such a Helmet lose their combat effectiveness for quite a while.
Seeing that Aoni had no problems on his side and could suppress one enemy alone, the Changdao Warrior jumped past Aoni and swung his blade to take on the two enemies fighting Weier.
He could go left to sneak attack the Defeated Soldier using a sword from behind. He could also go right to swing his blade and intercept the enemy using an axe who was preparing a Horizontal Slash to restrict Weier's room to dodge.
Considering that he didn't have an enemy Soldier fully defeated by him yet, the Changdao Warrior decisively chose the enemy on the left.
He dashed forward, gathered strength in both hands, and delivered a Diagonal Chop. It went straight for the neck of the Defeated Soldier who had their back to him.
This Defeated Soldier didn't realize what happened until they died; they were clearly still fighting the enemy, so why did their vision suddenly become slanted?
Why was their vision rapidly approaching the ground?
Why were their eyes going black, unable to think?
Pshhh—
From the severed neck, fresh blood sprayed upward like a fountain of blood. The blood, pumped by the heart beating violently during the battle, sprayed straight into the sky, covering the ceiling of the room and several people nearby in blood.
"My clothes!!!"
Weier looked with grief and indignation as his clean and tidy clothes were contaminated by the unavoidable fresh blood, glaring at the companion who had swung the blade to relieve him.
But the Changdao Warrior didn't care about this minor issue at all; he exhaled a breath and chased after the only remaining enemy.
This Defeated Soldier, who was also sprayed with blood and was using a logging axe, had his expression change drastically; with no heart for battle, he turned and ran. He rushed toward the wooden door he had come from, his movements so fast and decisive that Weier and the Changdao Warrior couldn't stop him in time.
"Chase!"
The Changdao Warrior took off in pursuit, but Weier kicked the headless Soldier corpse that was still spraying blood, knocking the body over. He wasn't in a hurry to chase; instead, he picked up the Water bottle from the table nearby, pulled out the stopper, and poured the clear water inside onto himself.
Fortunately, he hadn't worn his original expensive clothes for this battle, but had chosen a flexible piece of Leather Clothing from the captured supplies to wear for combat. At this moment, with a rinse of clear water, the fresh blood that had just splashed onto him was quickly washed away.
But there was no way to deal with the blood droplets that had splashed onto his head and face; Weier didn't dare to wipe them with his hands, fearing he would smear these blood droplets all over his face.
The Defeated Soldier holding the two-handed logging axe ran along the corridor on the inner side of the wooden wall without looking back. He didn't care about anything else, only shouting to his companions shooting arrows ahead: "The enemy is very strong! Be careful!"
But unexpectedly, the companion shooting arrows toward this side shouted back at him: "Watch out!"
Watch out?
Watch out for what?
The fleeing Defeated Soldier didn't notice at all that the guard post position beside him wasn't empty, but had an incoming enemy hiding there.
His leg felt a pain, and his whole body lunged forward and fell to the ground.
After rolling a few times, the Defeated Soldier fell directly from the wall Corridor that could accommodate two people walking side-by-side.
Thud!
"Ouch! What's going on?"
Before he could climb up to check what was wrong with his left leg, a black shadow jumped down from above him.
It was a person holding a Single-handed Axe in both hands, eyes wide open, mouth agape, roaring as they used the axe to deliver a Heavy Cleave from the air with gathered strength.
This was the last thing this enemy saw.
