Chapter 518: A Bizarre Outcome, Did He Annoy the Gods?

~16 min read 3,085 words

As mentioned before, although this sloppy soldier was neurotic, his skills were quite decent.

At this moment, a crossbow bolt was embedded halfway through the armor on his abdomen, with blood slightly seeping out, but the sloppy soldier didn't care at all; he merely swung his long sword in what appeared to be a chaotic manner, yet it was just enough to force back the daggers and short knives stabbing at him from all sides.

A driver tried to stab him from behind with a dagger, but the sloppy soldier seemed to have eyes in the back of his head, turning around in time to swing his sword, striking the dagger in the driver's hand so hard he nearly lost his grip.

"The opponent is so strong!" the driver shouted aloud.

Another driver nearby gripped a short knife with both hands and slashed fiercely at the sloppy soldier, but the sloppy soldier simply turned and held his long sword in the path of the attack, forcing the driver using the short knife to stop abruptly due to the reach advantage of the long sword.

There was no choice; if he wanted to strike the opponent, he would be stabbed by the long sword first. As it turned out, the opponent might not have been injured due to his armor, while he would have been the one to bleed first.

"What a troublesome guy!" the driver using the short knife shouted.

The four of them had actually surrounded the opponent from all sides, yet they couldn't take him down.

"Get away! All of you get away! Have pity on me! You idiots, please let me escape! I just want to live!" The sloppy soldier babbled nonsense, but his hands pressed forward step by step, rapidly closing in on one of the drivers and swinging his long sword repeatedly, scaring that driver into turning and running away.

"Trash! You're all trash! Please, you pieces of trash, spare me! Don't kill me, and I won't kill you!"

The sloppy soldier shouted, but when he turned his head and saw Xueya Site walking over slowly with a crossbow, he immediately panicked, shouting, "Don't come over!" but he charged straight toward Xueya Site.

Watching the opponent charge over full of energy despite having a crossbow bolt in his calf and another in his abdomen, Xueya Site's brow twitched, but he steadied his mind, planted his feet, held the crossbow firmly with both hands, and aimed the bolt at the center of the enemy's body.

Perhaps intimidated by Xueya Site's calm and professional demeanor, or perhaps the sloppy soldier realized it was foolish to charge head-on at an enemy holding a crossbow, he actually paused for a moment during his charge.

That single moment gave Xueya Site the opportunity to pull the trigger and fire a bolt.

Boom—whoosh!

The bolt struck the enemy square in the chest, causing the sloppy soldier to be knocked backward as if he had been kicked in the chest.

The large pack on his back actually cushioned his fall, but under the pressure, the pack, which had appeared to be full of things, collapsed inward. The pack only looked big; in reality, it didn't contain much.

Though hit in the chest by a crossbow bolt, the sloppy soldier did not die, mainly because the most heavily protected part of his soldier armor was the center of the chest; Xueya Site's bolt had only penetrated halfway through his abdomen, and hitting the center of the chest meant only part of the metal arrowhead pierced the armor.

But this was still incredibly uncomfortable; the massive impact would not only knock a person over but also cause them to lose their breath and feel chest tightness for a moment, and some people might even have their hearts stop for a split second.

This sloppy soldier was the same; he gasped for air, staring blankly at the sky, muttering something silently.

The surrounding drivers looked at each other, but no one dared to step forward.

Xueya Site shouted loudly: "Didn't you all bring lassos and fine soil? Throw the soil into his eyes! Use the ropes to bind his hands and feet! Ptooey! I want to see what else this guy can do!"

Upon hearing this, the drivers remembered that to compensate for their lack of combat power, they had brought some other tools.

Two drivers immediately grabbed a handful of soil from their pockets and threw it directly at the head and face of the sloppy soldier on the ground. It was dry, fine soil, and getting it smeared on one's face was no small trouble; the sloppy soldier's eyes were immediately covered, and he squeezed them shut in pain, but the dust that had entered his eyes still made it impossible for him to open them, leaving them dry and stinging.

His muttering mouth was also stuffed with dirt, and he immediately spat it out with a "ptooey, ptooey, ptooey," but he couldn't do anything about his nose; he wiped the dirt on his face with his hands, trying to fan the dust away.

But the next moment, his feet were nimbly snared by the other two drivers, and as the two pulled, the slipknots tightened, and each dragged one of the sloppy soldier's legs backward.

"Hey, hey, hey???" The sloppy soldier slid off his pack and was dragged along the ground by the two drivers, being pulled continuously.

He wanted to stand up, but it was impossible.

He wanted to swing his sword to cut the ropes on his feet, but he had dropped his long sword and shield when he was slapping the dirt off his face.

The sloppy soldier tried to straighten his waist to cut the ropes with his dagger, but he had been shot in the abdomen earlier, and any movement of the wound was extremely painful; he couldn't bend over to get up at all.

So he gave up, waving his dagger at the sky, cursing everything with the most vicious words he knew.

This included the village companions who bullied him when he was young, the rival who competed for the same girl when he grew up, his wife who nagged and was dissatisfied with everything all day, his few children who caused trouble and mischief every day, the hateful tax officer who collected grain taxes, the lord's soldiers who took the opportunity to extort him alongside the tax officer, the conscription official who drafted him into the army, the camp cook who skimped on his rations, the soldiers from the neighboring county with whom he had friction and fights, the terrifying army of the enemy nation that was covered in flames, the Knight Adjutant who wouldn't let them flee on their own, the various terrifying wild monsters in the mountains and forests, the cooking companion who made food even worse and caused them to have upset stomachs multiple times, the strange plant that could speak human language and tasted weird but couldn't fill their stomachs at all, the Captain who ordered them to attack innocent villages, the other soldier companions who ostracized him, these weak enemies with such despicable and shameless tactics, and the various gods who watched him suffer his whole life but never came to save him.

When he cursed those gods he knew, the atmosphere around them became somewhat strange.

Xueya Site, who had fired two bolts at the enemy soldier, felt his hair stand on end and immediately sensed something was wrong. He hurriedly shouted to the drivers surrounding the enemy soldier: "The situation is wrong! Be careful!"

He didn't need to say more; at this very moment, the closer the drivers were to this sloppy soldier, the more obvious their feelings were.

The two drivers pulling the ropes couldn't help but feel their hair stand on end, and their hair subconsciously bristled, causing them to let go of the ropes and turn to run.

As for the two drivers who were using short knives and daggers in one hand and holding a handful of dust in the other, they were even closer to the sloppy soldier; by now, it wasn't just their hair standing on end, but they could feel a slight prickling sensation on the surface of their entire bodies.

And without even realizing it themselves, the two of them had already turned and run.

It was the instinct of the human body driving their actions.

Because the very next moment, before anyone could even start running, a rumble of thunder sounded in the sky, and the sloppy soldier on the ground instantly exploded.

It was as if an elephant had been forcibly hidden inside a person's body, and the moment the elephant entered the human body, the entire person suddenly burst and shattered in all directions.

Everyone was covered in the flesh and blood of the person who had exploded; heads, faces, bodies, arms, weapons, legs, and even the surrounding ground were covered in a layer of organ tissue that no one knew which part of the body it belonged to.

Xueya Site was facing the person head-on, and even though he was the furthest away, the front of his body was covered in a layer of exploded human flesh and tissue.

He wiped his face, smelled the bloody flesh on his hands, and immediately felt a wave of nausea, bending over to vomit the meal he had eaten not long ago that morning.

The others were even worse off, some even kneeling on the ground to vomit.

But what was bizarre was that even though the enemy was wearing soldier armor with metal plates, this gear did not explode along with the human body. Thinking of this, Xueya Site endured his nausea and walked toward the spot where the enemy had exploded.

His feet stepped on a layer of dry soil stained with human flesh and blood, and just stepping on this stuff caused no small amount of psychological damage.

And when Xueya Site walked over to look, he found something even more outrageous: the enemy had exploded, but the clothing and armor on his body were left intact on the ground; not only that, the several crossbow bolts he had fired into the enemy's body, which had passed through the armor, were also still stuck in the armor, perfectly intact.

It was as if only the parts of the enemy that belonged to the human body had exploded, while other things that did not belong to the human body had not moved at all and remained in place.

Xueya Site's mind was a mess; he kicked the enemy soldier's pair of dirty boots with his toe and found the boots were empty, and he could even see dirtier foot wraps inside the boots, but the person's feet were nowhere to be found.

"What is going on? What is all this?"

Xueya Site muttered to himself, unable to understand.

But since the enemy was already dead, even if it was a bizarre death, Xueya Site gathered the drivers to leave quickly; they didn't even dare to collect the weapons and equipment left behind after the enemy's bizarre death, and they hurried toward the carriage.

Everyone was silent, only concerned with cleaning off the human flesh and tissue they had been stained with. But it wasn't that easy; the five of them were covered in filth, their weapons stained with flesh and blood, looking as if they had been through a difficult, bloody battle, though in reality, that was not the case.

When everyone returned to the carriage, the horses pulling it were in much better condition; although such a strange event had just occurred nearby, these horses did not react nearly as strongly as they had to the earlier rumble of thunder.

"This enemy was full of strange things; I just kicked the big pack he was carrying, and it turned out to be full of tattered things, as if they had been chewed up by house mice," a driver said with a strange expression as he shared his discovery.

Xueya Site waved his hand and said: "Forget about this guy; this person was like he was under some kind of curse, his speech had no logic, and he even defied the gods. Could it be that he ended up like this because he cursed the gods?"

Someone immediately shook their head in disagreement: "How is that possible? Who hasn't complained about the gods in private? And I've never seen anyone end up like that guy."

"That's true. There was once a person in our village who had a lot of resentment toward the church and the God of Agriculture and said a lot of bad things, but I never saw him turn into that."

But at this moment, a driver who had been closest to the man spoke up: "But he didn't just insult the God of Agriculture, did he? I heard him curse many gods, and he cursed them very viciously..."

Xueya Site found a piece of clean Linen Cloth from the carriage and scrubbed his face vigorously, grumbling, "Who knows, maybe one of those gods being cursed just happened to pass by?"

He then silently made a pointing gesture, the meaning self-evident: that sloppy Soldier might have been punished and executed by a passing god.

No one knew if that was the specific reason, but this conclusion was something everyone present could actually accept.

With this conclusion reached, everyone finally let out a sigh of relief; even though they were still stained with the unlucky fellow's blood and tissue, their expressions were no longer rigid, and they all began to relax.

With Xueya Site deliberately enlivening the atmosphere, the drivers of the carriages that had started moving again all put aside the previous incident and turned to boasting about their own combat performance.

Before long, they spotted Knight Jier and began waving their weapons at him, which actually made Jier wonder if they had just been through a bitter battle, otherwise how could they have ended up in such a state?

Outside the Dongce Damen of the Cunzi, Bata'er Jiaoshi was currently leading his Warriors, followed by the hurriedly arriving Yongqi Maomao, to rendezvous with Aoni and the others who had been waiting there for some time.

After the two sides exchanged brief pleasantries about their respective combat situations, Jier arrived in a hurry on his warhorse.

By the time Jier arrived, Bata'er Jiaoshi and his men could no longer restrain themselves and had launched a round of attacks against the tightly shut Dongce Damen Gangshao.

The Warriors had seized many Soldier Shields with better performance from the enemy, which allowed the shield-bearers to upgrade their gear; with better shields, the defensive effect they could provide would be even greater.

With the help of the shield-bearers and the support of three archers, several melee Warriors crossed the area under enemy Arrow fire and reached the base of the wall of the Gangshao. This was a blind spot for shooting from the platform above the Gangshao, and the enemy Soldiers above could not attack them here unless they risked sticking their upper bodies out from the protection of the platform, but that would be very unwise, and no one would do that.

Just as the Warriors near the wall were preparing to ram the gate or climb in from a spot nearby to open the Dongce Damen from the inside, Jier arrived.

As soon as he arrived, he saw the situation and couldn't help but shout, "Ha, your movements are too fast! If I had arrived any later, this place would probably have been taken by you. It seems my plan was still a bit too conservative."

Hearing these words from Knight Jier, the Warriors laughed, "Then would you like to just watch? We are about to take the enemy's Jiedian!"

Jier laughed heartily and approached quickly on horseback.

The enemy Soldiers on the Gangshao saw Jier approaching on horseback and immediately shot Arrows at him.

But the Arrows were either swiped away by Jier wielding his Long Spear, or after hitting the Armor on his body, they barely managed to drill into the Metal Armor Plate but could not pierce it, let alone pierce the Hard Cowhide Armor underneath the plate.

Jier only swayed slightly and had no further reaction. When he approached the Dongce Damen on horseback, his left hand took a Throwing Spear he had seized not long ago from the Weapon Rack behind him, and without needing to aim much, he threw it toward the platform above the Gangshao with his left hand, hitting an enemy Soldier.

This Soldier was hit in the chest by the Throwing Spear, which pierced his body entirely, and he was even knocked flying by the force carried by the Throwing Spear, falling directly onto the ground inside the Cunzi.

"How can this be?"

"What is this?"

The remaining two Defeated Soldiers were experienced; their unit was originally led by a Knight Lord, so they had naturally seen how their Knight Lord fought.

And Jier's performance at this moment was not much different from their Knight Lord.

Both rode warhorses covered in Armor, though Jier's warhorse looked slightly smaller, and the Armor was a style they had never seen before.

Both wore heavy Armor and did not fear the Arrows shot by ordinary people, but they had sharp eyes and felt that the Armor on the newcomer seemed somewhat similar to the Metal Armor Plate worn by soldiers like them? Rather than the heavy metal plate armor worn by regular knights.

Moreover, the newcomer's Armor was too plain, not as flashy as the armor of knights; except for the cape behind him which was somewhat interesting, everything else was too simple.

As for the weapons, they couldn't tell much, only that although the Dwarf Soldier Spear was of high quality, its appearance was relatively restrained; even after killing people and seeing blood, activating its internal enhancement ability, what it displayed was not too outrageous.

"Is this person a knight?" one of the two remaining Defeated Soldiers asked the other.

The other shook his head, "Doesn't look like it, hard to say. But it's not safe here, let's retreat back into the Gangshao."

After saying this, he jumped down along the wooden ladder first.
