Chapter 56: The Battle of Banjiu Cunzi (Part 1): The Eastern Battlefield

~17 min read 3,333 words

Jier took the lead with the Warriors who were riding horses or sitting in carts, heading straight for the nearest village on the west side of the trench, following the directions on a roll of cowhide map carried by the person sent by the Sasi Family.

Jier had seen that village from afar when heading to the Lumber Yard before, but because the village was not near the main road leading to the Lumber Yard, Jier had never been there.

However, it did not matter; as long as there were people who had been there, it was fine.

"My Lord, that area ahead is Banjiu Cunzi." Jier slowed his horse, approaching the leading carriage; sitting next to the driver's position was a Sasi Family attendant carrying the cowhide map.

Jier had seen this person by Bell's side before; he seemed to be a familiar attendant of Bell's. For this counterattack plan, this person not only carried the important map but was also the "eyes" planted by Bell-Sasi in Jier's team.

The messenger was another young man on horseback; Jier had asked about him before, and he seemed to be a capable guard from the Town Guard who was familiar with the surrounding terrain and knew how to ride. The two low-level officials from Yemei Town responsible for clerical work were sitting in the co-driver's position of the carriage behind.

"Very good, this village is very close. We estimate we can clear the village by noon and settle the Villagers who have followed us. Everyone slow down; Banjiu Cunzi ahead is closest to the trench passage entrance and is bound to have a large number of Monsters entrenched there."

Jier took the initiative to slow down, and the Priests and the messenger on horseback following him also slowed down. The carriage beside him naturally reduced its speed as well, stopping five hundred meters away from Banjiu Cunzi.

The area here was flat, and there were not many small Shulin for gathering firewood near the village, nor were they right in front of Jier and his group, so everyone could see Banjiu Cunzi ahead, as well as the Lumber Yard looming in the distance.

Jier's ears twitched; he seemed to be able to hear some sounds of Monsters moving in the distant village, and there even seemed to be the sound of splashing water?

Riding on horseback gave him a good view; turning around, he could see the direction of Yemei Town. It seemed that the Town Guards, Armed Civilians, and the hundreds of Villagers who needed to be relocated, all following their path, were just gathered in a chaotic mess outside the trench.

From time to time, scattered Villagers would run out of the formation, wanting to act according to their own ideas, but they were quickly caught up by the Town Guards, beaten severely, and driven back into the formation.

Moreover, the cries of children, the curses of women, and the mutual shouting of Villagers who knew or did not know each other were vaguely transmitted over.

Grinning, Jier thought that if the civilians on his side could be this chaotic at such a short distance, it was hard for him to imagine how chaotic the path taken by Bell and the path taken by the Sun God Church must be.

Jier would not be surprised if dozens of people were lost while the team was moving; after all, not all Villagers were about to be temporarily settled in their original villages. Some people had no choice before because the trench blocked them, but now that they had the chance, they would likely risk sneaking back to their own villages.

"They really know how to add to the trouble." Jier hoped these clever-acting fellows would not add a new force to the Monsters and make the subsequent battle more difficult.

Compared to the civilian relocation team far behind, the Warriors on Jier's side were much better. After Jier's training, the subordinate Warriors automatically organized their equipment after getting off the carts and quickly lined up in three neat rows behind Jier.

As for the guards and thugs who had volunteered from the Caimen Inn, they were much more casual. As soon as they got off the carts, some took off their pants to pee, some wanted to mix into Jier's team, some wanted to get close to the supply carts, and some even wanted to come up and curry favor with Jier.

The diversity of Humans was vividly reflected in them.

"Get back! I don't require you twenty people to line up in neat rows, but please stay together, don't walk around at will, and don't shout loudly."

Jier scolded in a deep voice.

His subordinate Warriors let out muffled laughter, clearly holding these people who had joined temporarily in extreme contempt.

These people who had joined temporarily were still a chaotic mess. Jier snorted, drew the Dwarf Soldier Spear from the weapon rack behind him, spurred his horse to charge over, and used the butt of the spear to whip the disobedient fellows who were running around, driving them together.

Many of these people became angry, but Jier gave an order to his subordinates: "Everyone turn around, draw your swords!"

Aoni and the others turned in place, and amidst a clanging sound of friction, they drew the Soldier Swords issued to everyone and uniformly let out a muffled roar: "Hu-ha!"

These people who had joined temporarily were terrified and also drew their weapons, wanting to resist, but the gap between the two sides was too great in terms of numbers, weapon equipment, and organizational ability.

Some fellows who knew they were no match immediately began to beg Jier for mercy.

"Lord Jier, we are truly sorry, we will follow your orders!"

"Yes, yes, yes, we are all on the same side, here to deal with Monsters and make money! There is no need to point our blades at our own people before the battle begins!"

"Humans don't fight Humans! Our own people don't fight our own people! Kind Knight, we will gather together right now and follow your orders!"

Jier snorted; these people were just like this—if you didn't show them some color, they would be free and loose as if you didn't exist.

"Priests, please follow fifty meters behind the team. Everyone else, stay with the carts and don't move; wait for my summons before moving up. If any stray Monsters come over, you move and guide them to our side, or guide them to the civilians approaching from the rear."

"The caravan must not engage the enemy, understand?"

Jier's drivers responded one after another. Although they also wanted to fight and gain rewards or something, Jier had already said in advance that for this battle, except for the flowering Monsters leading the others which had rewards given by the Sasi Family, there were no rewards for other Monsters; everyone only had a participation reward for the battle.

Therefore, the ordinary Warriors or drivers who knew they were no match for the flowering Monsters extinguished the idea of killing many Monsters, but those Warriors who prided themselves on their skills were different.

"Aoni, you select fourteen people with strong pressure-bearing capacity to form the left, middle, and right, and you lead the middle team to engage the enemy."

Aoni's spirits lifted, and he responded in a deep voice: "Understood, My Lord!"

He then stepped out and turned around, his gaze sweeping over his comrades. According to Jier's wishes, he selected fourteen Warriors who had Shields, were sturdy, and could both take a hit and fight to be in this middle team.

Immediately after, Jier called out to Weier: "Weier, you lead the rest of our people to form the left wing team, responsible for the Monsters that will engage on the left during the battle. Try your best to force them toward the middle team; do not make killing the enemy your goal."

Weier nodded, stepped out, and waved to signal the others to stand with him.

Then Jier said to those 'Warriors' who had joined temporarily: "I won't demand anything of you; you are responsible for the right wing battle. Just like the left wing, after engaging the Monsters, guide them toward the middle."

Some of these people nodded to show they understood, but more of them had stupid expressions, not understanding what Jier was talking about.

Many of them had likely never participated in a battle of more than ten people before, let alone a coordinated confrontation between two sides totaling over a hundred units.

They had no concept of organized combat in their minds. Many of Jier's subordinates were at least transferred from farmers; in large-scale agricultural production, villagers of a village would often organize themselves to deal with troubles that a single household could not handle.

For example, repairing village walls, modifying rivers outside the village, digging wells, or moving giant rocks in newly reclaimed fields—these tasks required the concerted efforts of at least ten people, or up to hundreds, to achieve the goal.

Therefore, in terms of organizational power, the young men who were originally farmers were actually more adaptable to multi-person organized and coordinated actions than the guards and thugs.

However, although they didn't quite grasp Jier's meaning, led by some caravan guards in the team, this group of people still moved to the right side of the front of the team. At this point, the left, middle, and right teams for the attack were already in position.

Jier moved the Long Spear to his left hand and drew the Hunting Sword with his right, letting the sword emit a white light that was clearly visible even in the daytime, and pointed it straight ahead.

"Everyone, draw your weapons, maintain formation, and advance slowly!"

Aoni and Weier's teams began to walk forward after Jier gave the order. As for the ragtag army on the right, they waited until the others had walked five or six steps before they suddenly realized they were supposed to attack, and then they all hurried forward.

Jier ordered them to advance slowly, but they walked quite fast, quickly surpassing the left and middle teams and heading toward Banjiu Cunzi ahead at a faster speed.

Moreover, in the process of advancing, they shouted and cursed at those Monsters, and some foul language that didn't repeat itself kept coming out, which really opened Jier's eyes.

The five Priests of the God of Agriculture riding on horseback looked at each other and looked at Jier with wrinkled faces. Jier smiled and said nothing, spurring his horse to charge forward.

The Monsters were not deaf; although the auditory organs of the human bodies they parasitized had long been digested and swallowed, they clearly had hearing. And it was more acute than most people imagined.

So when Jier and his group were organizing their formation one mile east of the village, they also ran out from places with water in every corner of the village, gathering under the command of the three flowering Monsters in the village.

The leading flowering Monster poured a bucket of freshly drawn well water over its head, shuddered with comfort, and the flowers on its head opened one after another, emitting a rich fragrance.

The parasitic Monsters that smelled this floral fragrance shook their heads and spirits, and on some 'people', tiny tender buds even drilled out from the human skin, blooming into delicate initial sprouts.

Many of them scattered, found some simple things that could be used for fighting from all over the village, and without forming a neat formation, they just held various things in their hands, ran out of the village gate, and headed straight for Jier's team at a fast pace.

A flowering Monster on the side was wearing a capable mercenary outfit; unlike the other Monsters, it had two Long Swords at its waist. At this time, at the signal of the leading Monster, it drew its dual swords and jumped and leaped as it rushed out of the village.

Only seven or eight Monsters with plant branches growing out of their heads remained to guard the two flowering Monsters, as if they felt that the force just sent out was already enough to deal with the sixty-plus Humans on Jier's side.

But they were clearly wrong.

If it were the Town Guard of Yemei Town, they might find it difficult to withstand the charge of nearly a hundred Monsters, but Jier and his men were quite different.

"My god!"

"Retreat! Retreat! They are rushing out! So many, so many, so many!"

"Damn it! No one told me there were so many Monsters in this village! And they even have weapons in their hands!"

"To hell with weapons! They're just some farm tools and wooden sticks! What's there to be afraid of! You cowards ran away after just one look; at least go up and weigh them up first."

The guards and hired thugs on the right flank charged the fastest, so they fell into chaos when facing the hundred parasitic Monsters rushing out of Banjiu Cunzi all at once. Many of them turned their feet and began to jog in the direction they had come from.

But there were also some tough guys who considered their martial arts to be decent and didn't want to run without even fighting; setting aside Jier's punishment later, if Knight Jier could survive, they also wanted to see what level these parasitic Monsters, which they had never encountered before, actually were.

Yes, the people in the town had never seen what the parasitic plant Monsters that were wreaking havoc outside the town looked like until now, and they had never fought them in person even once.

So they had no idea what level the enemy was at.

"Spread out the formation, maintain three-man squads to engage the enemy!!" Jier shouted in advance. The Monsters were still two hundred meters away from everyone, and they would rush up in about a minute or so; the Warriors still had time to automatically form small squads.

After issuing the combat order, he himself took the lead, spurring his horse to charge forward through the gaps in the formation, engaging the enemy first at an extremely fast speed.

He put away the glowing Hunting Sword, but this fellow seemed unwilling to play a supporting role in such an important battle, so it did not want to be returned to the Sword Sheath by Jier.

"Hmph, then as you wish, go kill the enemy yourself!" Jier flung the Hunting Sword forward, striking a parasitic Monster that was holding a Stone in both hands several dozen meters away.

As it approached the Monster, the Hunting Sword changed from a thrust to a slash, slicing the Monster in two from the waist in one strike, and then, with its kinetic energy undiminished, it changed trajectory in the air and flew toward another Monster.

Jier felt the fighting spirit of the Yueshui Skull Two-Handed Axe vibrating slightly under the cloak behind him, so he took the axe from his back, and as he passed a parasitic Monster at his side, he split the upper body of this Monster from top to bottom in an instant before it could react.

"You go too! Today, these Monsters are yours to slaughter!"

He shouted and flung the Yueshui Skull Two-Handed Axe.

After leaving his hand, the blue axe began to spin, bringing with it a terrifying whistling wind; like a deadly circular saw, it collided and flew left and right at the height of a Human's chest, smashing or sucking dry the Spirit of one parasitic Monster after another.

As for Jier himself, he simply transferred the Dwarf Soldier Spear he had been holding in his left hand to his right, gripped the rear of the spear shaft firmly, and used his left hand to hold the warhorse Jiansheng, constantly adjusting the direction of the fast-running Tianxuecao, while the spear in his right hand pierced and exploded the head and neck of every parasitic Monster beside him.

The vital point of these ordinary parasitic Monsters was in the torso; Jier knew this, and he also knew that they would not die even if they lost their heads.

But after all, without the eyes and other sensory organs on the head, relying solely on the vine tentacles re-extended by the headless Monsters, their perception of the outside world was greatly weakened.

Especially the Monsters whose heads had been exploded by Jier along the way; they were often knocked to the ground by the impact, and after getting back up, they had to spend quite a while before they could extend vines from their broken heads to probe the outside world.

And what Jier wanted was this moment when the Monsters 'paused' in place.

This prevented the Monsters, whose numbers were more than double that of the Humans, from rushing into the faces of Jier's team all at once. Through the slaughter of the two Spirit weapons, coupled with Jier's deliberate obstruction, the Monsters suddenly became sporadic cases of reaching the front of the Human team.

Although Aoni had not expected such a perfect situation either, he at least knew that Knight Jier would not let them truly engage in a head-on battle with more than twice their number of Monsters.

"Long live the Knight!" he shouted.

"Long live the Knight! Long live! Long live!" The Warriors in his group also shouted. Jier's battle at this moment was basically placed right before all of their eyes; this scene of one man and one horse charging against a hundred Monsters and carving out a bloody path made their blood boil!

Weier also immediately shouted: "We cannot let down the Knight's hard fighting! Let us also kill the enemy!"

"Kill!" The Warriors no longer advanced slowly, but in groups of three, charging forward.

Weier was followed by Bawei and Sipulu; the three were extremely Refining Qi. When the first parasitic Monster holding a farm tool approached, Weier cut off the Monster's head in the instant he passed by, Sipulu severed the arm holding the farm tool, and Bawei used an axe to lift the Monster up, knocked it to the ground, and chopped the Monster's torso to pieces with a few heavy axe blows.

That Monster was finished right then and there.

And the other Warriors also formed groups of three one after another, engaging and fighting the enemy.

And they strove to drive the Monsters toward the middle of the formation during the battle.

Aoni held his Soldier Shield level in his left hand, raised his Long Sword high like a torch in his right, and shouted loudly to the companions around him: "Block them, kill them all! Remember to find the weak point on the body! Don't get entangled by their vines!"

"Hu-ha!" More than a dozen Warriors holding Shields responded in unison.

They quickened their pace, directly using their Shields to knock over the scattered Monsters that approached, then immediately the three of them swung their swords to cut off the limbs of the fallen Monsters and break their chests until the Human Face Core somewhere on the torso was destroyed.

At the same time, while these few Warriors were fighting, others raised their Shields to pass them and used their Shields to knock over new Monsters in the front.

The archers, who were a few steps behind the others, moved along the rear flanks of the formation, using Arrows to scatter the Monsters rushing over together, artificially creating movement difficulties for certain Monsters, and creating a numerical advantage for the Warriors in the front row.

As for the guards and hired thugs on the right flank, they were not doing so well.
