Chapter 194: One Hundred and Fifty-First Chapter: Successive Twists and Turns
Antonius is the noble lord who rules the Lamedon region of the Kingdom of Gondor.
His family members are mostly known for being bold and fearless, and they rule over mostly hardy mountain folk.
Because they have fought for years against the Orcs lurking in the White Mountains, their martial prowess far exceeds that of their neighbors.
Namely, the Gondorian inhabitants of Blackroot Vale and Ringlo Vale.
Of course, although the lords of these two regions did not react as quickly as Antonius, after settling the relevant affairs of their fiefs, they also set off one after another with their soldiers along the South Road of the Kingdom of Gondor, heading toward Minas Tirith.
During the march, this force also killed and repelled a small squad of pirates preparing to raid nearby residents near the Durniel River.
And once they reached Lebennin, they encountered Antonius, who was stationed nearby, preparing to rest a while before continuing to the White City.
"Eagle-Eye" Du De, the lord of Blackroot Vale, led six hundred archers; the valley has much game, so there are many hunters.
And "Generous" Drake, the lord of Ringlo Vale, led four hundred infantrymen with uneven equipment.
There is a small mine in the mountains near Ringlo, so Drake's family has abundant iron ore to arm their own infantry.
Originally, the place where they were stationed was dozens of kilometers away from Pelargir, and they could not observe what was happening here at all.
But when the Swan Knights were breaking through, a small squad of cavalry, after finishing off the Wolf Riders that were entangling them, discovered that their position seemed closer to Antonius's encampment.
So they took it upon themselves to lead their few remaining men across the Sirith River, heading to the west of Pelargir to seek reinforcements from the Gondorian army stationed there.
Pelargir is the main city of Lebennin; whether it is the South Road that runs through Gondor or the Harad Road that connects to Ithilien, both converge at Pelargir.
Not to mention that this port city also guards the river channels leading to the White City and Osgiliath.
Upon receiving the news, Antonius naturally knew that the main city could not be lost, so he immediately led his own troops, as well as the local militia of Lebennin, preparing to advance along the South Road toward Pelargir.
And Drake and Du De, naturally, could not continue to rest.
At this moment, on the battlefield outside the city of Pelargir, charging at the very front, besides the family guards of the three lords, were the militia from Ringlo Vale.
And behind these soldiers were over a thousand militiamen organized locally in Lebennin.
The people of Gondor never lack the courage to resist evil.
Although their numbers could not be compared to the great army led by Angmar, counting everyone, it was just over two thousand.
But their goal was very clear: to quickly finish off the Uruk army under the city walls, then enter the city to assist the garrison in holding out, waiting for reinforcements from the White City.
This part of the army was led by "Generous" Drake; after approaching the battlefield, they valiantly launched a charge at the enemy.
And Antonius led the Swan Knights who had come for reinforcements, plus all the cavalry he could scrape together, and charged toward those dozens of Trolls.
"Fearless" Antonius did not expect his few cavalrymen to be able to fight those terrifying monsters to the death.
He only hoped that his cavalry unit could draw the Trolls' attention and slow their pace in supporting the Uruks.
Thereby giving Drake time to lead the army to clear out the scum gathered under the city walls and then successfully enter the city.
And "Eagle-Eye" Du De led the archers at the very back of the formation, his sharp eyes constantly calculating the distance between himself and the enemy.
"Halt, form up, form up!"
Following the voice of "Eagle-Eye" Du De, the six hundred archers stopped their running and quickly arranged themselves into three horizontal rows.
"Raise bows, hold the bow arm two fists above the head, aim at the enemy directly in front."
With Du De's shout, his order was relayed to the entire unit by his attendants.
And ten-odd seconds later, Du De released the bowstring in his hand and shouted at the same time.
"Loose arrows!
"
With the order given, a dense rain of arrows directly shrouded the heads of the Uruks, and a large swath of the easternmost unit was shot down.
And with the help of the moonlight, Du De, with his sharp vision, saw the effect of this volley clearly.
He then immediately issued his second order; the time Drake had left him was running out.
"One and a half fists above the head, fire."
Another dense rain of arrows fell directly into the center of the Uruks' scattered formation, but the damage this volley caused to the enemy was not as great as the first.
Besides the enemy scattering their formation, most of the Uruks also noticed the arrows coming toward them and raised their shields, covering their vital parts.
At this time, the infantry unit led by Drake, after the two volleys of arrows, approached the Uruks' formation, which was somewhat loose from dodging the arrows.
"Kill them!
"
With a loud roar, Drake brandished the great axe in his hand, hacking down the two Uruks in front of him, and led the infantry behind him, killing his way into the enemy's camp.
The supporting Human infantry soon clashed with the Uruks under the city walls.
Facing this situation, Du De naturally could not let his archers continue firing.
"Everyone, draw swords, charge with me."
With an order, Du De also led the archers and charged up.
And the first contact between the cavalry led by Antonius and the Trolls had already ended long ago.
Although he himself thrust the Spear in his hand fiercely into a Troll's thigh, and by relying on his superior courage and decent horse-handling skills, successfully escaped the Troll's counterattack.
But the cavalrymen following behind him were not so lucky; most of them, after completing their attacks, were violently knocked away, man and horse together, by the enraged Trolls with a club, and then lay on the ground, flesh and blood a mess, without a single movement.
Under such attacks, ordinary Humans simply had no possibility of survival.
And the cavalrymen who could successfully attract the Trolls' attention and escape were mostly the Swan Knights of the Prince of Dol Amroth, and they actually only accounted for one-fourth of this cavalry unit; the others all died at the hands of the Trolls.
But their deaths were not in vain; more than half of the Trolls were successfully distracted by this charging cavalry.
Following the cavalry led by Antonius, they ran toward the banks of the Anduin River.
Antonius would lead the cavalry in a loop there, and after shaking off the Trolls that were closely pursuing him, he would rendezvous with the infantry under the city walls and enter the city.
By then, there would naturally be Ballistae on the city walls to deal with this scum.
And Berilach, who was commanding the soldiers in battle, saw the hope in his eyes brighten in an instant the moment he saw the reinforcements.
While he was fighting hard to hack down the Uruks, he shouted loudly to the deputy beside him: "Quick!
"Assemble an elite force to support them."
Soon, a small but well-equipped and fierce-looking infantry force gathered at the city gate.
They still needed to wait for an opportunity.
And the moment when the infantry unit led by Drake became completely entangled with the Uruk was naturally the best time.
The long-prepared infantry elite rushed out from the south gate of Pelargir, and amidst shouts and cries, they joined the infantry led by Drake to pincer the enemy beneath the city walls.
At this time, the Uruk who were fighting for the city walls not only had to face the deadly weapons thrown down from above, but also had to deal with attacks from both sides.
In their panic, they actually began to fight individually, losing all unified coordination.
Facing such a favorable situation, the Humans' troops, after Du De arrived with the archers, actually surrounded the Uruk army, which was similar in number to them.
For a moment, the situation for the Humans in the local battlefield beneath the city walls improved greatly.
But the Witch-king of Angmar, currently on the hillside in the distance, was not in a very good mood.
If the raging fire of anger in his heart had a temperature, it would surely burn those food-wasting pirates to death alive.
Because they took the benefits but did not do the work, failing to follow the orders of Angmar to pin down the Human troops stationed in Lebennin, allowing this reinforcement to destroy his siege plan in one fell swoop.
Originally, the Uruk army had already climbed the city walls; as long as they could entangle the Humans on the walls and let the Troll successfully advance to the south gate of Pelargir, then this battle could be declared over.
That gate, which had neither Mithril nor Magic, could never withstand the impact of a Troll.
As long as the gate was smashed open, with the Troll clearing the way in front and the dense mass of Orcish behind, the defenders of Pelargir could never withstand such an attack.
However, all of this was interrupted because of this reinforcement of Humans.
What Angmar did not know was that the Umbar Pirates, who were originally going to plunder Lebennin, had set off from near Pelargir and soon collided with an Elf fleet from the Grey Havens at the mouth of the Anduin River.
After probing each other, the cruel and cunning pirates knew that, given the performance of their own ships, they could not beat the smaller Elf fleet in this vast sea area.
Their own ships could not catch up, and the range of their bows could not compare to the Elf; the only small Ballista that could pose a threat to the Elf was useless because it was night, and on the pitch-black sea, their vision could not compare to the Elf.
The pirate operating the Ballista only saw a white blur before being finished off, along with the cannon, by an Arrow shot from afar.
What was the point of fighting then?
Knowing they could not beat the opponent, the pirates slunk away to the south, not even returning to Pelargir.
If Angmar launched the battle tomorrow, he would likely learn of this news.
And Angmar, who did not know all this, although very angry, was only so because of his unreliable allies.
He still had very sufficient confidence in the battle before him.
Especially when Angmar discovered that the sturdy gate of Pelargir had actually been opened by the reckless Humans at this moment.
This matter caused the originally angry Angmar's heart to immediately turn to cruel pleasure, because he had already thought of a more convenient plan.
He was seen brandishing the steel sword in his hand, driving the black horse beneath him, and starting to charge toward Pelargir.
And he issued the order for the entire army to charge.
Those large numbers of Orcish who stayed in place without tasks were originally treated by Angmar as a reserve force, intended to be kept until the city gate of Pelargir was broken by the Troll before letting them charge.
But now the battle situation had changed, so naturally, all forces needed to be committed.
And as Angmar rapidly approached the battlefield, the dark aura radiating from his body fluctuated strangely.
Subsequently, he looked up to the sky and let out a howl that was extremely ear-piercing to the Orcish; even those Uruk who were fighting threw away their weapons and covered their ears.
And after this cry entered the ears of the Humans, it was not just ear-piercing; it was as if they had seen the thing they feared most, with terror and despair rising from the depths of their hearts, even causing them to throw away the weapons in their hands while muttering unconsciously.
Even the "fearless" Antonius fell into a brief moment of distraction at this moment.
The entire battlefield, following this scream from Angmar, was actually quiet for a few seconds.
Subsequently, the Orcish, with their resistance to dark power, reacted quickly, picking up the weapons on the ground and hacking at the bewildered or fleeing Human soldiers around them.
The form of the battlefield changed in this instant, and the gate of Pelargir was also occupied by the Uruk who reacted a step earlier; they had already rushed into the city, and in a short time, the city was ablaze with fire.
Angmar tasted the fear that filled the entire battlefield and smiled with satisfaction; this was exactly what he wanted, and this was exactly what he had foreseen.
The master would surely be very satisfied.
However, the leader of the evil Nazgul immediately sensed the aura of two other troops.
That was the anger like fire, and the elegance like wind.
Those were two auras that were completely out of place with the current atmosphere, appearing so suddenly to the north and south of Angmar.
There was simply no time left for the Witch-king of Angmar to ponder or wonder, following a series of horn blasts like a storm.
A cavalry unit in bright armor charged directly from the west side of Pelargir.
And the fastest among them was a Knight whose armor shimmered with silver light under the moonlight, and behind him closely followed twenty Heavy Cavalry in full plate armor.
And more Human cavalry lagged a distance behind this small team, their target being the Orcish army behind Angmar.
Angmar watched as thousands of mighty Human cavalry, following beneath a Flag radiating white light, charged in his direction.
But he could clearly feel that the silver-armored Knight charging at the very front was coming for him.
