Chapter 128: Your Mouth Is So Sweet Today

~8 min read 1,517 words

Shen Yanhui raised his eyes, looking at his little girl, and the man beside her.

Through the curtain of rain, the emotions in his eyes were not clearly visible.

Gu Yan was stunned for only a moment before the corners of her mouth curved up.

The next second, she stepped out from under Jiang Yu's umbrella and ran through the rain toward Shen Yanhui.

Rainwater instantly soaked her hair and the hem of her dress, but she did not care at all. She ran to him in a few steps, and she didn't even mind the splashes she kicked up onto his trouser legs.

Shen Yanhui reached out to catch her and tilted the umbrella toward her side. The umbrella canopy covered almost her entire head, leaving half of his own shoulder exposed to the rain.

"Why did you run over?" Amidst the pitter-patter of the rain, his voice seemed to carry a hint of dampness as well.

Gu Yan tilted her head to look at him, her eyes bright.

"I couldn't wait."

She reached her wet hand into his free hand, and they interlaced their fingers.

Shen Yanhui took the opportunity to hold her hand and pulled her closer into his embrace.

"Why are you back so early?" She shook his hand, "Is there nothing going on at the company?"

Shen Yanhui recalled the few photos he had received in the office and squeezed her fingers: "Mm."

Gu Yan did not doubt him and smiled even more happily.

"What a coincidence, we have a telepathic connection, arriving home together."

He finally curved the corners of his mouth: "Mm."

Then he raised his head, his gaze passing over Gu Yan to land on Jiang Yu, who was holding an umbrella not far away, his expression unclear.

Gu Yan followed his gaze and only then remembered, saying softly: "He is Jiang Yu, you have met before, in Paris."

Shen Yanhui nodded slightly.

"Many thanks to Mr. Jiang for bringing her back." Although it was a thank you, his tone was very indifferent.

Jiang Yu met his gaze through the curtain of rain, and after a moment, he nodded: "It's only right."

Shen Yanhui said no more and, with his arm around Gu Yan, walked toward the entrance.

Gu Yan turned back to wave at Jiang Yu: "Thank you for today, we're going in now, goodbye."

Jiang Yu smiled and waved back.

The rain was still falling.

He stood where he was, watching the two figures disappear inside the door. The man held the umbrella, shielding Gu Yan completely, while half of his own shoulder was soaked.

He withdrew his gaze and turned to get into his car.

Inside the door, Gu Yan was being led inside by Shen Yanhui, chattering away.

"Shen Yanhui, Professor Chen invited me to be a judge for their school's painting competition! It's my first time receiving such an invitation, it feels so magical."

Shen Yanhui: "Then do you want to go?"

Gu Yan thought for a moment and nodded.

"Of course I want to, but I'm also a bit nervous. After all, it's my first time being a judge, what if I don't judge well?"

Shen Yanhui raised his hand and tucked a strand of her damp hair behind her ear.

"You won't."

"How do you know I won't?"

"Because you are the most spirited person I have ever met."

Gu Yan's eyes curved: "Your mouth is so sweet today."

She continued to chatter: "Professor Chen also said to give comments from the perspective of a young artist. But I'm not that young anymore, and I don't know what the students like these days..."

She chattered on about a bunch of things, and Shen Yanhui listened quietly, occasionally saying "Mm."

Walking to the foot of the stairs, Gu Yan stopped.

"Shen Yanhui, you actually came back so early because you missed me, right?" Her tone was mischievous.

"Mm, I missed you."

Gu Yan was satisfied and stood on tiptoe to kiss him on the lips: "Good boy, I'm going to change my clothes first, wait for me to come down."

After saying this, she turned and went upstairs.

——

On a rainy day, it gets dark quickly.

The streetlights outside lit up, the dim yellow halos blurring in the rain, hazy and indistinct.

Gu Yan took a shower, dried her hair, and changed into dry, comfortable clothes. By the time she went downstairs, an hour and a half had passed.

She had just reached the living room when Zhong Bo came in from outside and said to her: "Miss, the Master called just now to say that he and the Madam will not be coming back tonight."

Gu Yan nodded.

Gu's father and mother had gone to Lincheng today to visit old friends; they probably decided not to return because the rain was too heavy and driving on the highway was too dangerous.

Her older brother and sister-in-law usually lived out, and Gu Lin was not in the country. In this way, the huge villa was left with only her and Shen Yanhui.

She stood in the center of the living room and suddenly felt that this house was indeed a bit too big.

"Where is Shen Yanhui?"

Zhong Bo said: "Mr. Shen is in the study."

Gu Yan nodded and walked toward the study. The study door was ajar, revealing a warm yellow light.

She did not push the door open directly, but gently pushed it open a crack and poked half her head in.

Shen Yanhui was sitting behind the desk, holding a document and looking down at it. He was wearing dark gray loungewear, which made him look much softer than his usual suited-and-booted appearance.

He did not look up, but as if he had a premonition, he suddenly spoke: "Why are you standing at the door?"

Gu Yan was caught, but she didn't feel guilty, pushing the door open and walking in: "Just seeing what you're doing."

She walked to the desk and glanced at the document in his hand.

The dense, crowded characters made her head ache just looking at them.

"I think your brain must be a computer; how can you stand reading this kind of stuff?"

Shen Yanhui put down the document and looked up at her.

The young girl had just taken a bath, and her cheeks were slightly flushed from the heat. She was wearing a milky-white loungewear set, which made her look soft all over.

He reached out a hand toward her: "Come here."

Gu Yan placed her hand in his palm, and with a gentle tug from him, she tumbled into his arms and sat on his lap.

"Perfect," he said, sliding a document toward her, "there's a document that needs your signature."

Gu Yan took a look: "Signing again?"

She muttered, but still picked up the pen and signed her name where he pointed.

Shen Yanhui raised his hand to touch the ends of her hair: "Your hair is still wet."

"I already blow-dried it, there's only a little bit left," Gu Yan said nonchalantly while signing.

Shen Yanhui didn't speak, but simply pressed the intercom by his side: "Bring a hair dryer over."

Very quickly, a servant brought a hair dryer, placed it on the table, and quietly retreated.

Shen Yanhui picked up the hair dryer, plugged it in, and said to Gu Yan: "Turn around."

The young girl obediently turned around.

Warm air brushed over the top of her head, and his fingers combed through her hair with movements that were very light and slow.

Gu Yan remembered the first time he helped her blow-dry her hair; she had been a bit distrustful of him, afraid he would be clumsy.

After all, this kind of task of waiting on someone was probably something he hadn't done many times in his life.

But his movements were unexpectedly skillful, to the point that she began to enjoy the feeling of being served by him.

Her hair was indeed only a little bit damp, so Shen Yanhui didn't blow-dry it for long. He set the hair dryer aside, wrapped his arms around her from behind, and rested his chin on her shoulder.

Gu Yan turned around in his arms, nestling into his embrace face-to-face.

"Tired?"

She shook her head: "Not tired, just bored."

"Bored?"

"Yeah." She leaned against his chest, her fingers playing with the buttons of his loungewear: "Mom and Dad aren't here, Gu Lin isn't here, and Big Brother and Sister-in-law aren't here either; it's just the two of us in the whole house."

Hearing this, Shen Yanhui chuckled: "Isn't that good?"

Gu Yan thought for a moment: "It's good, it's just too quiet."

He raised his hand and tucked a stray lock of hair by her cheek behind her ear: "Then what do you want to do?"

Gu Yan: "I don't know, do you have any suggestions?"

Shen Yanhui: "Eat first."

Gu Yan: "Just that?"

Shen Yanhui: "Mm, eat first."

Gu Yan felt that his words were a bit meaningful, but she couldn't say what was wrong with them.
