Chapter 146: He Seemed to Hear the Sounds of Heaven

~8 min read 1,585 words

Outside, several people wearing Arab robes were standing there.

The leader was a middle-aged man with an extraordinary air, followed by several attendants. Seeing Shen Yanhui come out, he stepped forward, placed his right hand over his chest, and bowed slightly.

"Mr. Shen, I am truly sorry that you and your wife were frightened on our land."

Shen Yanhui nodded slightly.

"Sorry for the trouble."

"You are too kind." The man straightened up, "We have already arranged a private jet, ready to take off at any time. It is just that the airspace is currently unstable, so we need to wait a few more hours."

Shen Yanhui nodded.

The man said a few more things, mostly polite greetings and assurances, then left with his attendants.

Chang Su saw them out and returned with a file folder in his hand: "Sir, this is the latest flight path. The military will provide an escort for the entire journey until we leave the dangerous airspace."

Shen Yanhui took it, glanced at it, and put it down.

"Is she asleep?"

"The Madam is resting."

Shen Yanhui stood up and walked toward the inner room.

Gu Yan was not asleep. She was curled up on the sofa, wrapped in a blanket, staring at the ceiling. Hearing footsteps, she turned her head.

Shen Yanhui walked over and sat down beside her: "Why aren't you sleeping?"

She didn't speak, just burrowed into his arms.

He caught her.

"Who were those people just now?"

"Friends here in Dubai."

She looked up at him: "You have friends here too?"

He curled the corners of his mouth: "When business grows big enough, one has them everywhere."

She was stunned for a moment, then suddenly laughed: "Shen Yanhui, just how powerful are you?"

"Even more powerful than you imagine." He paused and continued, "So don't be afraid; everything will be fine after you wake up."

Gu Yan gave a soft "mm" and shrank back into his arms.

Outside the window, night was gradually falling. The thick smoke in the distance could no longer be seen; only the city lights were lighting up one by one.

He lowered his head and whispered in her ear: "In a few more hours, we will leave safely."

——

Gu Yan did not sleep very soundly, but under Shen Yanhui's gentle coaxing, she still managed to get a full night's sleep.

Waking up the next day, her spirits were much better.

Low voices came from outside the door; she pulled back the quilt, got out of bed, walked to the door, and gently pulled it open a crack.

In the outer room, Shen Yanhui stood before the floor-to-ceiling window, his back to her, speaking English rapidly.

Chang Su stood to one side, his expression serious, holding a tablet and nodding from time to time.

Sunlight shone in from outside the window, landing on Shen Yanhui's back and outlining a cold, stern silhouette.

Gu Yan leaned against the doorframe, watching him.

It was clearly just an ordinary morning, and he was clearly just on a phone call, but she felt she couldn't look away.

She watched, somewhat lost in thought.

Suddenly, Shen Yanhui turned around.

In that instant, Chang Su clearly saw the aloof and stern aura around his master melt away in a flash.

He raised his eyebrows slightly, a faint trace of a smile appearing in his eyes.

Chang Su silently lowered his head and sighed in his heart.

Great, here we go again.

A second ago he was talking business with a "keep away" look on his face, but now that the Madam had appeared, he had gone completely soft.

He had been standing here for so long, and he hadn't seen his master smile at him even once.

Shen Yanhui hung up the phone and glanced at Chang Su.

Chang Su understood immediately and nodded as he left. No need to be a third wheel, he understood that.

"Awake?" Shen Yanhui walked up to the young woman.

Gu Yan was wearing a bathrobe, the collar loose, revealing a section of her collarbone. He looked down, his brow furrowing slightly.

"Why are you wearing so little?"

Gu Yan shook her head and said: "I'm not cold."

Shen Yanhui naturally didn't believe her and touched her hand; it was clearly cold.

"What about your feet?"

Gu Yan looked down at her bare feet and curled them in, but she remained stubborn: "Not cold either."

He didn't speak, simply scooped her up horizontally, placed her back on the bed, and pulled the blanket from the side to cover her legs.

"Are you hungry?"

"It's okay."

"What do you want to eat?"

"Anything is fine."

Shen Yanhui looked at the young woman's overly obedient appearance, his heart softening into a complete mess. He pinched her cheek and chuckled: "What does 'anything is fine' mean?"

Gu Yan's voice was soft and sweet: "It means... I'll listen to whatever you say."

She didn't want to think about anything right now; she only wanted to rely on him completely.

Shen Yanhui let out a low laugh, turned, and went to the outer room to make a phone call to arrange things. When he returned, he had an extra cup of hot milk in his hand.

"Drink some first," he said, handing it over.

Gu Yan took it, held it in her palms, and drank it in small sips.

After a few sips, she suddenly thought of something, looked up, and asked, "Did I disturb you?"

Shen Yanhui: "No."

Gu Yan still felt uneasy and said in a low voice, "If you have things to do, go ahead and be busy; you don't need to worry about me."

He raised his hand and stroked the young girl's head: "Taking care of you is the most important business."

Gu Yan's eyes curved into crescents, and she snuggled into his embrace.

Shen Yanhui did indeed have many things to attend to; he had only accompanied Gu Yan for a short while before being called away by Chang Su.

Gu Yan stayed in the room alone, reported her safety to her anxious parents, and comforted Lin Wei, who had been crying until her eyes were red.

Putting down her phone, she felt her mind go a bit blank.

She felt she shouldn't worry and should trust Shen Yanhui; he would definitely protect himself well.

But she couldn't help but let her imagination run wild; bullets have no eyes.

If…

Gu Yan stopped herself, covered her head with the quilt, and rolled around twice.

It was all her fault; why did she have to run around…

And in the gaps of her wild thoughts, Shen Yanhui finally received news from the military: the flight would take off in two hours.

——

On the way to the airport, Gu Yan wrapped her arms tightly around Shen Yanhui's waist, leaned against his chest, and looked out the window.

The motorcade was long, with military vehicles in front and behind, and soldiers with live ammunition sat in the vehicles, scanning their surroundings with vigilant eyes.

She watched for a while, withdrew her gaze, and was just about to speak when a loud bang suddenly exploded in her ears.

The vehicle body shook violently and braked sharply.

Gu Yan was thrown forward, but Shen Yanhui pulled her into his protection.

A scream caught in her throat.

She raised her head and, through the car window, saw rolling smoke and dust ahead, with dark shadows moving.

Gunshots.

She heard gunshots.

The bodyguards quickly got out of the cars and formed a human wall. Some were shouting, some were saying something into walkie-talkies; it was complete chaos.

She clutched the man's clothes tightly: "Shen Yanhui…"

His arm tightened, pulling her entire body into his embrace: "Don't be afraid." His voice remained steady, carrying a heart-soothing power.

Another loud bang, even closer this time.

Gu Yan could not control her body from trembling, and tears welled up silently.

"Shen Yanhui," her voice was shaking violently, "I… I have something to tell you."

Her eyes were red, her face covered in tears, looking as disheveled as a frightened little animal.

"If we die here today—"

"We won't."

"Listen to me!"

Shen Yanhui wiped away her tears and coaxed her in a low voice: "Alright, go ahead."

Gu Yan gripped his clothes, speaking somewhat incoherently: "Have I never told you that I like you so, so much… You are so good to me, sometimes I don't even know how to repay you…"

"You don't need to repay me, just stay by my side."

"But I caused you to fall into danger… Shen Yanhui, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry…"

She spoke faster and faster, her tears flowing even more fiercely.

"I don't want to die, I still want to celebrate birthdays with you, spend the New Year with you, and do many, many things with you… Shen Yanhui, I love you…"

The man's gaze suddenly darkened.

Amidst the chaotic gunfire, the corners of his mouth slowly curled up.

"Finished?"

Gu Yan was stunned for a moment, and a tear slid down from the corner of her eye.

Shen Yanhui raised his hand and wiped that tear away. He lowered his head, pressed it against her forehead, his voice equally deep: "Say it again."

The young girl's tears were still flowing.

Her lips trembled, but she said with extreme firmness: "Shen Yanhui, I… I love you."

At this moment, it was as if he had heard the music of the heavens.
