Chapter 149: I'll Tell You the Rest Tonight
Gu Yan shrank her neck, but she didn't dodge; instead, she tilted her face up and continued: "It's just very cold, you don't have any expression at all, and I worked hard for a month!"
Shen Yanhui chuckled: "Then tell me, what should I do so it isn't cold?"
Gu Yan blinked.
She was too familiar with this look; after being an old married couple for so long, how could she not understand his little thoughts?
But she just wanted to tease him.
Tease this big dog who, just from receiving a gift and hearing a 'happy birthday', had his heart beating this fast.
She thought for a moment and said with a straight face: "Even if not weeping with gratitude, at least you should have tears in your eyes, right?"
Shen Yanhui raised an eyebrow, watching her continue: "How about holding me and spinning three times? Or singing loudly—"
Before she could finish, her body felt light, and she was scooped up horizontally.
Shen Yanhui held her and really spun three times.
Gu Yan laughed out loud: "Shen Yanhui, you only heard that part, right!"
He didn't put her down, still maintaining that calm and breezy appearance, but the smile in his eyes couldn't be hidden.
"Is that enthusiastic enough?"
She smiled with her eyes curved, but still insisted: "So-so."
He lowered his head and leaned into her ear: "I'll tell you the rest tonight."
Gu Yan: "Oh."
Isn't it just being flipped over and turned around, doing this and that? She had already guessed it.
"It seems Mrs. Shen is not quite satisfied with my answer." Shen Yanhui looked at the young girl's calm demeanor and couldn't help but want to keep teasing her.
Gu Yan nodded: "Indeed not quite satisfied."
Shen Yanhui laughed again: "Then it seems there's no need to wait until tonight; I must let you know now." He held her and turned to walk outside.
"No, no, no..." Gu Yan laughed out loud, her legs swinging at his side.
He ignored her, his pace swift.
She couldn't stop laughing and started to beg for mercy: "Tonight! Is tonight okay?"
Shen Yanhui's pace didn't stop, though he did slow down. He lowered his head and kissed her on the lips: "Little liar."
Gu Yan curled up in his arms, just laughing.
Shen Yanhui carried her to the living room and sat on the sofa, but still didn't let her go. He just changed positions, letting her sit on his lap.
He lowered his head, buried it in her neck, and took a deep breath.
The tip of his nose was full of her scent.
Gu Yan was stunned for a moment, then raised her hand and gently hugged his head.
"Gu Yan."
"Hm?"
"Thank you." Shen Yanhui's voice was a bit low, "Thank you for doing these things for me."
Gu Yan paused, reached out to pat his back gently, her voice full of smiles: "Besides thank you, what else?"
Shen Yanhui raised his head, his gaze flickering.
"I love you."
Gu Yan felt as if fireworks were exploding in her ears; she curled her lips and reached out to pat his head.
"Good boy."
——
In the afternoon, Gu Yan didn't know where she had dug out an antique music box.
It was small, a wooden box, the paint on the surface a bit mottled, but one could still see the exquisite craftsmanship of the past.
She held it to the living room, sat on the carpet, and wound the key.
It didn't ring.
She wound it again.
It still didn't ring.
She frowned, fiddling with it for a long time, but the music box just wouldn't give her any face.
Shen Yanhui was sitting on the sofa nearby, looking at documents on his tablet. While reading the text on the screen quickly, he still kept a sliver of attention on the young girl.
She was bowing her head, her hair falling down to cover half her face. Her fingers were poking here and there, and she was muttering something.
Suddenly, she sighed.
It was a very small sound, but Shen Yanhui still caught it.
He put down the tablet, stood up, walked over to her, and squatted down: "What's wrong?"
Gu Yan looked up and handed him the music box, a bit discouraged: "I don't know what's wrong, it won't ring."
Shen Yanhui took it and looked it over. It was an old object; the key was still there, but the gears inside must have jammed.
"Want to hear it?" he asked.
The young girl nodded obediently: "It was a birthday gift from my mother when I was little; I wanted to play it for you."
He didn't speak, just examined the music box carefully. Then he looked up and called for a servant to bring a toolbox.
"Are you going to fix it?" Gu Yan's eyes lit up.
Shen Yanhui sat down on the carpet beside her and gave a soft "Mm."
The toolbox arrived quickly. He rolled up his shirt sleeves, revealing his sturdy forearms, picked up the tweezers, and began to fiddle with the tiny gears.
Gu Yan leaned on his shoulder, looking closer: "Can you fix it?"
"I can." His voice was steady.
Gu Yan stopped speaking, just lying there like that, watching him repair it. His profile was very focused, his eyelashes occasionally drooping to cast shallow shadows beneath his eyelids.
After a while, he put down the tweezers and gently wound the spring.
A crisp melody flowed out.
It was an old tune, yet so gentle it made one's heart soften.
Gu Yan sat up straight: "It's fixed!"
Shen Yanhui wiped his hands and pulled her onto his lap: "If it doesn't play next time, come find me again."
She tilted her head back and said: "Okay."
Outside the door, Sheng Ze watched the two lovebirds inside, getting goosebumps all over. He nudged the arm of Zhou Wei beside him: "Did you see that?"
He lowered his voice: "They don't need us here to celebrate his birthday at all. Look at that, he can even make repairing a music box feel like a scene from a romance drama."
Zhou Wei lowered his eyes and didn't respond.
Sheng Ze continued: "Old Shen is just too doting."
"He used to be such a cold person, and now? Squatting on the floor to fix a music box for a young girl?"
"And here I was, always worried he wouldn't get a clue, worried he'd end up alone for the rest of his life... Heh, you really can't judge a book by its cover..."
He talked to himself for a long time, only to realize Zhou Wei hadn't reacted at all.
He jumped up: "You jerk, are you even listening to me?"
Only then did Zhou Wei move, lifting his eyelids to glance at him: "I heard you."
"You heard me? Then why aren't you saying a damn thing?"
Zhou Wei went silent again.
Sheng Ze choked, and just as he was about to continue, he suddenly remembered something. Zhou Wei was in the middle of a marital crisis; seeing Old Shen and his little sister-in-law being so affectionate, wouldn't that shatter his Dao heart?
Oh no, did he really hit a sore spot?
He gave a dry cough: "That... let's go, let's go, don't just stand here. Old Shen is doing so well, we can't let him get too smug."
Zhou Wei still didn't move.
Sheng Ze felt a bit uneasy, secretly cursing himself in his heart for having a big mouth.
He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but didn't know what to say.
Zhou Wei, however, suddenly spoke: "I'm leaving first."
"Leaving? Where to?" Sheng Ze was stunned.
"To chase my wife."
Sheng Ze was taken aback, and in that split second of hesitation, Zhou Wei had already turned and left, even waving a hand at him.
"Ha." Sheng Ze laughed in annoyance.
He didn't get a clue sooner or later, but now he actually knows to take the initiative to chase his wife.
Fine then.
Although he got a clue quite suddenly, at least he finally did.
If he really manages to win her back, he thought, he should at least get the credit for the primary assist!
