Chapter 47: Once a Day, Two Days Off on the Weekend
Shen Yanhui returned to the company early in the morning.
The helicopter landed directly on the helipad atop the Shen Group headquarters building.
Several people were already waiting nearby, led by Chang Su, who immediately stepped forward to report in a low voice as he saw Shen Yanhui walk down the boarding stairs.
"At 3:00 AM, an explosion occurred at the No. 7 oil field drilling platform in Lekki Port; the ignition point was at the underwater pipeline connection. The fire is currently under control, but the platform structure is damaged, and production must be halted for inspection."
Shen Yanhui did not stop walking, "Casualties?"
"Four foreign engineers sustained minor injuries and have been transferred to Lagos Hospital."
"See that they and their families are well taken care of," Shen Yanhui instructed.
Chang Su acknowledged this, paused, and continued: "But the more troublesome issue now is that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has just sent a letter demanding we submit a full accident report and is threatening to re-evaluate our extraction license."
Shen Yanhui took the tablet; on the screen was a satellite map of Lekki Port, with the sea area where the drilling platform was located marked with a glaring red warning.
His brows tightened slightly as he strode into the elevator.
Chang Su continued his report: "Third Master went to see the Old Master last night, and this morning the Old Master specifically gave instructions for you to handle this properly."
Shen Yanhui raised his eyes, his gaze deep, "Where is Third Uncle?"
"On his way to the company. I heard... he brought a few board members with him," Chang Su lowered his voice, "He likely intends to use this accident to stir up trouble at the board meeting."
The elevator stopped at the sixty-eighth floor.
Nearly twenty people were already seated around the long table in the conference room; the head seat was empty, and a middle-aged man around fifty years old sat in the first seat to the left.
He heard the commotion, looked up, and revealed a meaningful smile.
"Yanhui is here," he said in a gentle voice, "Sit."
Shen Yanhui gave him a faint look and took his seat at the head of the table as Chang Su placed the documents in front of him.
Shen Zongheng picked up his teacup and blew on it lightly: "Yanhui, this matter... has had quite an impact. The Old Master called specifically this morning to ask about it; he is very worried."
His tone was concerned, yet every word was barbed.
Shen Yanhui leaned back into his chair, his fingertips tapping lightly on the tabletop: "Does Third Uncle have any suggestions?"
"I wouldn't call it a suggestion," Shen Zongheng smiled, "I just feel that for such a large project, perhaps we should have been more cautious from the start?"
Shen Yanhui wore a look that was not quite a smile.
"I heard that the outsourcing company responsible for valve maintenance... seems to have some personal connections with a supervisor in the project department?"
This was as good as saying the accident was due to human negligence.
Several board members exchanged glances.
Shen Yanhui raised his eyes, his gaze sweeping calmly over Shen Zongheng: "Third Uncle is very well-informed."
"I'm just concerned about the company," Shen Zongheng's smile remained unchanged, "After all, I am also a board member; when something happens, I have to look into it."
"Then please rest assured, Third Uncle," Shen Yanhui turned to the head of the security department, "Thoroughly investigate all records of the valve maintenance and trace every single signatory. If there was indeed any illicit exchange of favors, handle it strictly according to company policy."
Shen Yanhui issued one instruction after another without the slightest sign of panic.
The smile on Shen Zongheng's face faded slightly.
The meeting lasted until noon.
After most of the response plans were finalized, Shen Yanhui announced the end of the meeting. The board members and executives left one after another, leaving only him and Shen Zongheng in the conference room.
"Does Third Uncle have anything else?" Shen Yanhui stood up and buttoned his suit jacket.
"Nothing much, just noticed you've lost some weight lately; have you been too tired recently?" Shen Zongheng said with a smile.
Shen Yanhui looked at him steadily, waiting for him to reveal his true purpose.
"Shen Ke knows he was wrong; why not let him return to the company? It would be a way for him to help you out."
"Is this Third Uncle's idea, or the Old Master's?"
Shen Zongheng's expression changed, "We are all family, why make things so ugly?"
Shen Yanhui laughed instead, "I return those same words to Third Uncle; we are all family, so it is best to keep certain intentions hidden deep and not show your hand."
The smile on Shen Zongheng's face could no longer be maintained; he let out a cold snort and left directly.
Only Shen Yanhui remained in the conference room.
He walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, picked up his phone, and dialed a number.
"Investigate all of Shen Zongheng's capital transactions over the last three months."
——
At eleven o'clock in the deep of night, Shen Yanhui boarded the helicopter for the return trip.
It was half an hour later when he got off the aircraft.
The wooden house was very quiet, with only a few nightlights left on. He went up to the second floor and gently pushed open the bedroom door.
Gu Yan was already asleep, curled up on her side in the middle of the bed, hugging a pillow, her long hair spread across the dark gray sheets.
He leaned over, pinched her chin, and planted a kiss.
He pulled away after a light touch.
But the young girl still stirred groggily, "... Shen Yanhui?"
"Mm," he lowered his head and kissed the top of her hair, "Did I wake you?"
Gu Yan reached out to hug the man's waist, finding a comfortable position. After a few seconds, she managed to open her eyes just a slit: "You're so late today..."
"There was something at the company, go to sleep."
Gu Yan struggled to stay awake, her eyelids fighting each other, yet she insisted, "I have something to tell you."
"Tell me tomorrow," he coaxed her.
"No, I have to say it today."
She yawned, tears welling up in the corners of her eyes.
Shen Yanhui chuckled softly, his thumb wiping across the corner of her eye, "What is it?"
Gu Yan: "It's just that... the frequency is too high, it's not good for the body."
Shen Yanhui was silent for a few seconds, "Do you think my body isn't up to it?"
Gu Yan: "..."
How on earth did he manage to interpret it that way?
"No... you are very capable." Gu Yan felt something was wrong and corrected herself, "No, I'm afraid you won't be capable in the future..."
Her voice gradually grew softer under his increasingly dangerous gaze.
Shen Yanhui's eyes darkened, and he reached out to take off her clothes.
Gu Yan hurriedly protected her collar, begging for mercy repeatedly: "I was wrong, I was wrong, you are very capable, you will be even more capable in the future..."
Shen Yanhui's hand had already reached under the hem of her pajamas, his fingers tightening, causing her body to tremble.
The young girl's panicked, trembling appearance was alluring without her even realizing it.
Feeling the softness in his palm, he decided to be merciful and listen to her say a little more.
"Then according to your thoughts, how often is appropriate?"
"... Once... twice a week?"
She said it with little confidence, her trailing voice still carrying a sense of probing.
Shen Yanhui chuckled, laughing at her for underestimating the energy of a man who had just had his first taste, and also laughing at her for not understanding him at all.
He refused flatly, "No."
Gu Yan widened her eyes, "Then how many times do you want?"
Shen Yanhui: "Once a day, with weekends off."
Gu Yan: "?"
Was she at work?
"No way! Don't even think about it! Three times, three times at most!"
Shen Yanhui applied a little force with his palm, Gu Yan's waist went limp, and her momentum vanished by more than half.
He said: "Then let's compromise, once every two days."
Gu Yan wanted to retort, but her lower back was being rubbed so comfortably. She pouted and compromised: "Then it's a deal, no more than that!"
Shen Yanhui kissed her earlobe, "Mm."
What this silly girl didn't know was that the "once" she spoke of and the "once" Shen Yanhui spoke of were two completely different things.
