Chapter 66: What a Profiteer
On the private jet for the return trip, Gu Lin finally did something useful for once.
After boarding, he beat Shen Yanhui to it and plopped himself down right in the middle seat between the two of them.
Shen Yanhui paused in his tracks, lowering his eyes to look at him.
Gu Lin looked up, righteous and confident: "What are you looking at? Can't a brother and sister sit together?"
Shen Yanhui didn't speak, just watched him quietly for two seconds. That gaze held no emotion, yet it made Gu Lin inexplicably creeped out.
But Gu Lin straightened his spine, refusing to back down.
Shen Yanhui eventually sat in the single seat by the window and fastened his seatbelt.
Gu Yan didn't want to pay any attention to these two childish men at all and rolled her eyes speechlessly.
After reaching cruising altitude.
Chang Su walked over with a tablet and reported in a low voice at Shen Yanhui's side: "Sir, regarding the signing of the youth training team members for the VortexRacing team next season, six candidates have been preliminarily screened, and their profiles have been sent to your inbox."
Shen Yanhui took the tablet and scanned it quickly: "Age?"
"All between 16 and 18, and all have experience in karts and lower-level formula racing."
"Budget?"
"12% lower than expected, the main reason being..."
The two men's voices were kept very low, but Gu Lin still heard them.
His body leaned toward that side unconsciously, pricking up his ears to listen.
Gu Yan saw it all and silently covered her forehead.
After Chang Su finished reporting and left, the cabin was quiet for a few minutes.
Gu Lin finally couldn't hold it in anymore.
He turned his head to look at Shen Yanhui, his tone feigning casualness: "That... the VortexRacing that Assistant Chang mentioned, is that the F1 team Wild God is on?"
Shen Yanhui looked up from the tablet: "Mm."
Gu Lin's expression was shocked and conflicted, his fingers trembling uncontrollably, "You... you are the boss of Vortex?"
He was starting to suspect he had Parkinson's; why did his hands shake non-stop whenever he encountered Shen Yanhui?
But this wasn't the time to think about that.
Shen Yanhui gave a nonchalant "Mm" and asked: "Does Young Master Gu the Second have any advice?"
Gu Lin's expression kept shifting; Gu Yan had never known a person could have so many expressions on their face.
"Advice is too strong a word... I just heard Assistant Chang say your team is preparing to sign a few youth training drivers?"
"Do you want to try?"
Gu Lin choked, subconsciously glancing at his sister beside him, and sure enough, he received an eye-roll. He felt a bit deflated for a moment: "Just... just asking."
Shen Yanhui, however, said: "Vortex does have a youth training program and accepts applications from potential semi-professional drivers. If you are interested, we can arrange a trial."
"Really?!"
Gu Lin's heart began to stir again.
Shen Yanhui: "But the premise is that you can pass the basic tests."
Gu Lin couldn't hide his excitement, "I can! I definitely can!"
Gu Yan was beside them, wanting to say something but stopping herself; every time she tried to speak, Shen Yanhui stopped her with a look.
She took a deep breath—forget it, forget it, let them be.
"I'll have Chang Su send you the application form for the youth training camp; forward it to him after you fill it out."
"Yes, yes, yes! I'll fill it out right now!"
While he was buried in filling out the form, Shen Yanhui suddenly stood up, "Young Master Gu the Second, switch seats."
Gu Lin looked up from the screen, a bit dazed: "Why?"
"Yanyan gets airsick; sitting in the middle is steadier."
Gu Lin looked at Gu Yan suspiciously: "You get airsick? How come I've never heard you mention that?"
Shen Yanhui interrupted him: "It's a symptom that only started recently."
Gu Lin was somewhat skeptical, but he still unbuckled his seatbelt, stood up, and said to Gu Yan: "Then you sit in my spot."
Gu Yan shifted over, and just as she sat steady, she saw Shen Yanhui sit down beside her before Gu Lin could, his movements impossibly fast.
Gu Lin: "?"
Shen Yanhui elegantly crossed his legs and pointed at the single seat by the window: "I think it's best not to disturb Young Master Gu the Second while he fills out his form; sitting in the single seat is more appropriate."
Gu Lin: "..."
He had just gotten a trial opportunity from the man's team; it didn't seem like a good time to flip out, right?
He gritted his teeth and sat down in the single seat.
Shen Yanhui added considerately: "If there's anything you don't understand, just ask Chang Su directly."
Gu Lin: "..."
He finally understood what it meant to be indebted to someone.
Shen Yanhui naturally lowered the armrest between them and reached out to wrap his arm around the young girl's waist.
Gu Yan glared at him, but still leaned against him as she went with the flow.
His fingertips traced light circles on her waist, the heat penetrating the thin silk shirt.
Gu Yan's earlobes burned, and she wanted to dodge, but the space was limited.
She turned her head to glare at him, mouthing: Stop it.
Shen Yanhui's lips curled slightly; not only did he not stop, he leaned down close to her ear and whispered in a breathy voice only the two of them could hear: "He can't see."
The warm breath brushed against her earlobe, and a tiny shiver ran down Gu Yan's neck.
"You did that on purpose," she said.
Shen Yanhui turned his head, his lips almost brushing against her earlobe: "What?"
"You know my second brother has dreamed of being a race car driver since he was a child, but the family wouldn't allow it." Gu Yan paused, "You are bribing him."
The corners of Shen Yanhui's lips lifted slightly: "I'm giving him an opportunity, how is that bribery?"
"Look at him, does he have the potential to become a professional driver!" Gu Yan whispered.
"So? You think I would actually sign him?"
Gu Yan was stunned.
There was a hint of a smile in Shen Yanhui's voice: "Formula racing is different from the kind he usually plays; at his age, he's long past the training period. Drivers all start with go-karts and enter youth training camps at seven or eight. Your brother?"
He shook his head lightly: "A three-minute passion."
Gu Yan understood now.
She looked at Shen Yanhui's sharp-lined profile and suddenly felt that this man was truly...
Cunning to the core.
"You just want him to owe you a favor so he'll go home and put in a good word for you."
Shen Yanhui chuckled softly and took her hand under the table.
He gently rubbed the back of her hand with his thumb, "In order to marry Mrs. Shen legitimately as soon as possible, one must naturally use any means necessary."
Gu Yan's face heated up, and she tried to pull her hand back, but he held it even tighter.
She gave a light "hmph" and whispered: "Aren't you afraid that he'll take your benefits and then turn around and disown you?"
Shen Yanhui: "His smooth brain shouldn't be capable of such ingratitude."
Gu Yan: "..."
She turned her head to look at Gu Lin, who was excitedly filling out the form, completely unaware of their whispers, immersed in his racing dream.
Irrefutable.
"Shen Yanhui, you really are a profiteer!"
"I only do business with you," he admitted candidly.
