Chapter 70: Shen Yanhui Seems Angry

~7 min read 1,396 words

Through the door, Gu Yan could already hear the deafening music inside.

She frowned and kicked the door open.

Under the crystal chandelier, Chen Zhiyuan was holding a young woman, his hand resting on her bare shoulder. On the table sat a half-empty bottle of foreign liquor, and the ashtray was piled high with cigarette butts.

The music stopped abruptly.

Chen Zhiyuan squinted, taking a good while to recognize the person at the door: "... Gu Yan?"

"Brother-in-law, what a coincidence." Gu Yan sneered as she walked in; her high heels made no sound on the carpet, but she approached step by step.

Her gaze swept over the woman in his arms, and her smile grew colder.

Gu Lin followed her in, with three blond-haired men blocking the door behind him.

He stared at Chen Zhiyuan and loosened his wrists: "Chen Zhiyuan, you're living quite comfortably, aren't you?"

Chen Zhiyuan's expression changed; he pushed the woman in his arms away and stood up: "Gu Lin? What is the meaning of this?"

"No special meaning, just here to see you."

Chen Zhiyuan forced himself to stay calm: "This is a business engagement, you barging in like this..."

Hearing this, Gu Lin scoffed: "Does an engagement require holding someone that tight? Your hand even reached her thigh; President Chen, your business dealings are quite comprehensive."

The woman in the red dress tried to slip away, but was blocked by one of the blond-haired men.

"Don't do anything reckless." Chen Zhiyuan backed away and bumped into the sofa, "The matter between me and your sister, we will resolve it ourselves..."

"You can't resolve it," Gu Yan said.

She took a step forward.

Chen Zhiyuan retreated again.

"Yanyan, listen to me..."

"I won't." Gu Yan interrupted him, her gaze falling on the lipstick mark on his shirt collar, "I'll just ask you, what is this?"

Chen Zhiyuan's eyes darted away: "It's... a client accidentally brushed against me..."

Gu Yan pressed closer: "Which client? What's her name? What does she do? Was the contract signed? Do you want me to call my father right now and have him check which company it is, so ignorant of etiquette that they rub lipstick on people during business engagements?"

A series of questions, each one barbed.

Sweat broke out on Chen Zhiyuan's forehead: "Gu Yan, this is a misunderstanding..."

"A misunderstanding?" Gu Yan smiled and turned to look at the woman in the red dress, "Sister, he says it's a misunderstanding. You tell me, what did you two do? Was the lipstick accidentally brushed on, or was it deliberately pressed on to disgust people?"

The woman's face turned deathly pale, and she dared not speak.

Chen Zhiyuan grew anxious: "What nonsense are you spouting!"

"Nonsense?"

Gu Yan suddenly grabbed the bottle of foreign liquor, unscrewed the cap, and flipped her wrist.

The amber liquid poured down from the top of Chen Zhiyuan's head, streaming down his hair, face, and shirt.

"Ah!" he screamed.

The smell of alcohol filled the air.

Gu Yan threw the empty bottle onto the floor, and the glass shattered.

"This bottle is for my sister," she said coldly. "She was blind to have married you back then."

Chen Zhiyuan wiped his face, the alcohol fueling his rage: "Gu Yan! You damn—"

He didn't finish his sentence.

Gu Lin's fist had already arrived.

Bang!

It landed solidly on his face.

Chen Zhiyuan staggered backward, knocking over the coffee table, and liquor bottles and glasses shattered all over the floor.

"This punch is for myself," Gu Lin shook his hand, "Looking at you makes me sick."

The three blond-haired men swarmed forward.

The scene descended into chaos.

The woman in the red dress screamed and huddled in the corner.

Gu Yan retreated to the door and watched with cold eyes.

She didn't intend to actually cripple anyone; Gu Lin knew his limits, but a lesson had to be taught thoroughly.

Just as she was thinking this, the private room door was suddenly pushed open.

Gu Yan frowned and turned her head; hadn't she already given instructions not to let anyone come and disturb them? How were they doing their jobs?

However, after seeing the people at the door clearly, she was suddenly stunned.

Four uniformed local police officers stood at the door, looking at the mess in the room: "Don't move, police!"

The air froze.

Gu Lin's fist was still suspended in mid-air.

Chen Zhiyuan lay on the ground, nosebleed flowing, alcohol mixed with blood, looking utterly wretched.

The police scanned the room: "Take them all away."

——

This was Gu Yan's first time in the police station.

She looked left and right and sighed deeply. The chairs at this police station were a bit too hard; the working conditions for the people's police really needed improvement.

The officer to the side suddenly knocked heavily on the table, pulling her wandering thoughts back in an instant.

"I saw those three blond-haired men loitering at the entrance of the club from far away, and I knew something would happen! Sure enough! We caught them red-handed the moment we went up! You dare to be this arrogant under the feet of the Imperial City? Gathering for a brawl, do you know that's illegal!"

So that was where the problem lay; Gu Yan silently glared at Gu Lin.

Gu Lin rubbed his nose, guiltily averting his gaze.

How was he to know that the three he had found were regulars at the police station, already under special watch by the local officers?

"Officer, we know we were wrong," Gu Yan said, honestly bowing her head.

"You know you were wrong?" The officer's tone softened slightly as he opened his notepad, "Then tell me, who threw the first punch?"

"Me," Gu Lin raised his hand.

"Why did you start a fight?"

"He cheated and bullied my sister."

The officer's pen tip paused, and he looked up at Chen Zhiyuan: "Is that so?"

Chen Zhiyuan sat on the other side, clutching his still-aching abdomen, his expression grim: "Officer, this is a misunderstanding..."

"A misunderstanding?" Gu Lin started to stand up again, but was pressed back down by Gu Yan.

"Sit still!" The officer frowned, "I am the one asking the questions now."

He looked at Gu Yan: "You tell me, what are the specific circumstances?"

Gu Yan coldly recounted the sequence of events; midway through, Chen Zhiyuan tried to interject and argue countless times, but was stopped by the officer's cold gaze.

After listening, the officer sighed: "Family matters should be resolved at home; resorting to violence is wrong. Look at this, now that it's blown up to this point, is there any point to it?"

Just as he was speaking, the phone in Gu Yan's bag suddenly rang.

Everyone looked over.

Gu Yan's heart skipped a beat.

It was over; she had stood Shen Yanhui up.

She had been so angry and busy teaching Chen Zhiyuan a lesson that she had completely forgotten to tell him.

What time was it now?

Was he still waiting at the restaurant?

The officer frowned: "Didn't I tell you to turn off your phones?"

"Sorry, Officer, I might not have turned it off completely just now," Gu Yan asked cautiously, "This call... may I answer it?"

The officer waved his hand helplessly: "Make it quick."

Gu Yan felt as if she had been granted a reprieve; she hurriedly stood up, walked to the corner, and answered the phone.

"Hello?"

The other end of the line was very quiet, so quiet that she could hear the sound of breathing.

Shen Yanhui's voice came through the receiver, low and steady, with no discernible emotion: "Where are you?"

Gu Yan found it hard to say: "... at the police station."

"Which police station?"

"The one near Chaoyang Gate."

"Why?"

"Gu Lin and I... were involved in a group brawl," Gu Yan said, her voice dropping as she felt in the wrong.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"What about Gu Lin?"

"He isn't either."

"What about the other party?"

"Gu Lin threw one punch, it wasn't heavy."

There was silence on the other end of the line for a few seconds.

Then Shen Yanhui said: "Wait there."

The call ended.

It was just two short words, yet Gu Yan somehow heard a sense of an impending storm.

She was done for.

Shen Yanhui seemed to be angry.
