Chapter 72: I Would Worry
Gu Yan had been shedding tears, but hearing this, she was so angry she laughed, glaring back at him with teardrops still hanging on her eyelashes.
"Is that the same thing? He is my brother."
Shen Yanhui stared at her: "What am I to you?"
This question was blunt.
Gu Yan was choked up for a moment, then became even more annoyed: "You can be whatever you want to be."
As she spoke, she pushed hard against the hand he had locked around her waist: "Let me go."
Shen Yanhui did not let go.
Instead, he tightened his arm, pinning her more firmly between his chest and the car door.
"Answer me," he said in a low voice, "what am I to you?"
Gu Yan turned her face away: "So what if you are my husband? Even if we're married, we can still get a divorce..."
This sentence completely ignited the dark fire that had been suppressed at the bottom of Shen Yanhui's eyes all night.
He gripped her chin, forcing her to turn her head back.
Their eyes met.
Gu Yan saw the surging emotions in his eyes—there was anger, and something else she couldn't name or describe, hot enough to make her heart tighten.
But she refused to yield.
"What, did I say something wrong?" She lifted her chin, the mole at the corner of her eye dampened by tears.
Shen Yanhui stared at her for a few seconds.
Then, he suddenly let go.
He took a step back, putting distance between them.
The night wind blew over, and Gu Yan suddenly felt that the spot where he had been holding her was a bit cold.
She bit her lip and said nothing.
Shen Yanhui turned and walked away.
Gu Lin was a bit dazed at the sight and was just about to say something, when he saw the man who had just turned to leave suddenly double back, hoist Gu Yan up, and shove her into the car.
Then, he drove off.
Gu Lin: "...?"
Gu Yan didn't have time to struggle before the car door was shut. She didn't look at him and said coldly: "I want to go home."
The driver was nervous and glanced at his boss.
Shen Yanhui: "Back to Man Island."
After saying this, he raised the car's partition, trapping the two of them in the cramped space.
The more Gu Yan thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt, and tears fell in streams again. She felt embarrassed and kept wiping them with the back of her hand, only making her eyes redder.
Shen Yanhui tugged at his tie, his heart feeling as if it had been pinched.
Her tears made him feel restless.
And even more, they made his heart ache.
The last bit of anger he had left completely vanished.
"Baby, stop crying." He reached out to pull her into his arms and lowered his head to kiss away her tears.
Gu Yan's body stiffened; it would have been fine if he hadn't tried to coax her, but the moment he did, she cried even harder.
Shen Yanhui pressed his forehead against hers and called her name: "Gu Yan."
"What!"
"I was angry, not because you didn't come to find me."
Gu Yan's eyelashes trembled, and she didn't speak.
"I was angry because when you encountered trouble, I was actually the last one to know."
He paused: "You can go to Gu Lin, you can solve it yourself, but at least you should let me know where you are and if you are safe."
Gu Yan finally raised her eyes to look at him.
"I just didn't react in time, I was too angry at the time..." she said awkwardly.
Shen Yanhui pulled her closer: "Is it okay to disregard your own safety just because you're angry?"
Gu Yan wanted to say that she hadn't disregarded her own safety.
But she heard him say again: "What if tonight wasn't a routine patrol, but some other situation? What if Chen Zhiyuan had brought people? What if those three thugs had turned to deal with you?"
Gu Yan opened her mouth but couldn't say a word.
Shen Yanhui sighed softly: "I would worry."
The young woman was silent for a moment, and after a long while, she whispered: "Fine, it was indeed my lack of consideration. But... you were wrong too."
"Where was I wrong?"
"You were fierce to me," Gu Yan accused, "and you ignored me, and dodged my kiss."
Shen Yanhui looked at her and suddenly smiled.
It was a very light laugh, but it made Gu Yan's ears feel hot.
"Then I'll make up for it now," he said, lowering his head.
But Gu Yan raised her hand to block his lips.
"Too late," she said, lifting her chin, "I don't want to let you kiss me now."
Shen Yanhui raised an eyebrow: "Then what do you want?"
"You apologize first," Gu Yan said righteously, "apologize for your attitude just now."
Shen Yanhui looked at her in silence.
Gu Yan stared back without showing any weakness.
A few seconds later, Shen Yanhui sighed.
"I'm sorry," he said, his voice very soft but very clear, "I shouldn't have snapped at you."
Gu Yan was satisfied.
She lowered her hands, hooked them around his neck, and took the initiative to lean in and kiss the corner of his lips.
"I forgive you," she said, her eyes curving into crescents, "I apologize too; I shouldn't have kept it from you."
A smile finally appeared in the depths of Shen Yanhui's eyes.
He held her, resting his forehead against hers: "Never again?"
"Never again," Gu Yan nodded, then added, "You aren't allowed to be so cold to me in the future; I'll be sad."
"Okay."
Gu Yan broke into a smile through her tears.
She reached out again to touch the wound on his lip; she had really bitten down hard just a moment ago, "Does it hurt?"
"It won't hurt if you kiss it."
Even though she knew he was saying that on purpose, she still lightly touched it with her lips.
Shen Yanhui felt his bottom line seemed to be lowering again and again, and he was actually somewhat willing to accept it.
A very dangerous signal.
He tightened his arms calmly and said in a low voice, "There is one more thing."
Gu Yan: "What?"
"You are not allowed to talk about divorce so casually in the future."
Gu Yan played dumb: "I didn't say that."
Shen Yanhui lowered his head and bit her ear.
The car drove into the Man Island villa area and stopped in front of the main villa building.
Shen Yanhui got out of the car, walked around to the back seat, and opened the door.
Just as Gu Yan was about to get out, he bent down and scooped her up horizontally into his arms again.
"I can walk..." she whispered.
"Does your foot not hurt anymore?" Shen Yanhui lowered his eyes to look at her.
Only then did Gu Yan remember her pretending to sprain her ankle earlier; her face flushed, and she buried her face in the crook of his neck: "It still hurts a little..."
Shen Yanhui didn't expose her and carried her into the villa.
The housekeeper was already waiting at the entrance, and upon seeing this scene, retreated to the side without changing expression: "Sir, Madam."
"First aid kit," Shen Yanhui ordered.
"Yes."
Gu Yan was carried to the living room sofa, and Shen Yanhui knelt on one knee before her, holding her ankle.
"Which foot?" he asked.
Gu Yan pointed to her right foot with a guilty conscience.
Shen Yanhui took off her high heel and pressed his fingers lightly on her ankle: "Does it hurt here?"
"... Mm."
"How about here?"
"... It hurts too."
Shen Yanhui raised his eyes and glanced at her.
From that one glance, Gu Yan knew he had seen through her.
But she still braced herself to keep up the act.
Shen Yanhui didn't call her out; he simply took an ice pack from the first aid kit handed over by the housekeeper, wrapped it in a towel, and applied it to her ankle.
His movements were very light and very careful.
Gu Yan wiggled her toes, enjoying his service.
"Staying here tonight?" Shen Yanhui asked suddenly.
Gu Yan nodded.
Then she suddenly shook her head.
She suddenly remembered the forgotten Gu Lin; she hadn't gotten her story straight with him yet!
