Chapter 6: Lu Yanshen, Is Your Wife Possessed?
Arriving at the old residence just after getting out of the car, Xie Wantang had a little boy cling to her legs; his hands, still dirty from playing in the mud and not yet washed, rubbed against her trousers.
"Uncle Lu, you finally came back." the little boy said, his voice soft and sweet, pleasant to hear and very clingy.
……
Hearing him call "Uncle Lu," Xie Wantang realized the little boy had mistaken her for someone else.
"Sorry, little one, I'm not Uncle Lu." Xie Wantang guessed whose child he was, but she wouldn't take out adult grudges on an innocent child.
The little boy seemed to realize only then that he was hugging an aunt.
He stepped back, looked up, and indeed it wasn't his Uncle Lu.
At that moment, Xia Meng heard the car horn, ran out from the inner room; she had wanted to speak with Lu Yanshen, but her son had caused trouble.
Xie Wantang had just changed into clean clothes, and now her son had messed them up.
Both sides of her thighs were covered in dark, slimy mud, impossible to ignore or avoid.
"Sorry, Wantang." Xia Meng gave a perfunctory apology to Xie Wantang, then put on an act, pretending to scold her son: "Dongdong, how can you be so mischievous? You played in the mud and grabbed people without washing your hands."
Then Madam Lu came out, saw the scene before her; she was already unhappy because Xie Wantang had thrown the whole family into chaos, and now she felt Xie Wantang was making a fuss over nothing by holding onto Xia Meng and her son.
"Wantang, Dongdong is not even three; his pants got dirty—just go inside and change them. You're an adult; do you really need to make such a fuss? Mengmeng and Dongdong are guests in our home."
Madam Lu blamed Xie Wantang, without any courtesy.
Xie Wantang was directly made to laugh in anger by her mother-in-law; she tilted her head and let out a snort of laughter.
Lu Yanshen saw her expression, about to speak up as a peacemaker, but little did he expect, Xie Wantang didn't give him any chance at all.
She squatted down, pulled out an angelic smile, and said, "Dongdong, right? Come, let Aunt Wantang hug you, okay?"
Little Dongdong, seeing that Wantang wasn't angry, took his short legs and lunged into her open arms.
Then Wantang picked him up, walked over to Madam Lu, set him down, and while everyone was puzzled, she took Dongdong's muddy hands and rubbed them all over Madam Lu's new skirt.
One second, two seconds, three seconds……
Finally, Madam Lu shrieked, "Ah——, Wantang, this is my newly bought skirt, what are you doing?"
"Hah——"
Xie Wantang stood up and gave a disdainful light laugh.
"So, as long as it doesn't happen to oneself, the bystanders think it's only right for the parties involved to be a little tolerant; now, my dear mother-in-law, do you still think it's no big deal?"
"Wantang, you……"
Madam Lu was made so angry by her that her face turned pale; Xie Wantang, as if she hadn't seen her, held her head high and turned to go into the main house.
This scene, Lu Yanshen stood not far away, naturally seeing it all.
At this moment, he finally understood: he had used the spirit of a contract to get Wantang to return to the old residence with him, and now he grasped the meaning of her last words, "You'd better not regret it."
Is she causing trouble because she thinks the mischief she's made isn't big enough, and she's determined to keep stirring things up?
Running to the old residence to cause trouble?
She really has a lot of nerve!
"Lu Yanshen, is your wife possessed?" Madam Lu shouted, furious, demanding an answer from Lu Yanshen.
"Sorry, Mom, I'll go educate her right now."
Having said that, Lu Yanshen strode off with his long legs to chase after Xie Wantang.
"Lu……" Xia Meng and little Dongdong tried to call him, but Lu Yanshen swept past them like a strong wind, not giving them a single glance.
After Xie Wantang entered the main house, the Lu family's two elders were present, as were Lu Yanshen's older brother and sister-in-law, plus her stern-faced father-in-law.
After greeting them all, she used the excuse that her pants were dirty and she wanted to go back to her room to change them, temporarily leaving the living room.
She and Lu Yanshen have a bedroom in the old residence.
Every month, the last Friday is the Lu family's family day; on that day, she and Lu Yanshen must stay overnight here.
So, Xie Wantang keeps a few sets of spare clothes here.
Their room is on the third floor; Lu Yanshen caught up with her just as she had reached the second floor and was about to go up to the third.
Xie Wantang heard the familiar footsteps; in the past, she would surely have stopped to wait for him, then affectionately linked arms with him and returned to the room together.
But now she is very calm, not at all excited, her steps steady, as if it made no difference whether he came or not.
Seeing her unmoved, Lu Yanshen grew angry.
He stepped over two stairs and blocked her path.
He almost blurted out "A good dog doesn't block the road," but fortunately, Wantang stopped him in time.
He blocked this side, so Wantang slightly turned her body, preparing to go the other way.
However, Lu Yanshen seemed to see through her intention, blocked that side as well, leaving a gap so narrow she might not even be able to squeeze through.
Fine……
Since he won't let her pass, she won't either.
"What do you want, Lu Yanshen?" Wantang finally lifted her head and looked at him squarely.
"Later, go apologize properly to Mom."
……
Wantang knew Lu Yanshen was a mama's boy, always filial to his elders; before, for his sake, in front of his family, she didn't know how many times she had to swallow her anger.
Her adoptive parents and their brothers, if they knew that the little princess pampered in their palms was living like this in the Lu family, they probably wouldn't dare believe it even in a dream.
"Mom? Oh, you mean my mother-in-law? Why should I apologize, what did I do wrong?" Wantang opened her innocent big eyes and asked guilelessly.
"Wantang, don't pretend to be stupid with me." Lu Yanshen's voice dropped considerably, his tone thick with warning.
"Pretend? Oh, you mean Dongdong rubbing mud on your mom's skirt? That was Dongdong's doing, not mine; if an apology is really needed, shouldn't there be a sequence of who came first?"
"Besides, it's also your mom…… oh, I mean my mother-in-law said it's no big deal, kids will be kids, they don't understand, so even if he committed murder and arson, it wouldn't matter as long as there's an adult around to wipe his bottom whenever needed."
……
Lu Yanshen didn't speak; his gaze turned much colder.
However, Xie Wantang wasn't afraid; after silently counting five seconds, seeing Lu Yanshen still say nothing, she reached out and pushed him, "Lu Yanshen, get out of the way—I need to change clothes, or else I'll get scolded again for not knowing the Lu family's rules."
This time, Lu Yanshen didn't continue blocking her path; footsteps sounded downstairs again, Xie Wantang glanced back—it was Xia Meng bringing little Dongdong over.
Xie Wantang didn't give that fox spirit a chance to speak, she put more force into her hand, pushed Lu Yanshen aside, and hurried upstairs.
The sound was still a bit faster.
As she turned the corner, she heard Xia Meng say in a coquettish voice to Lu Yanshen, "Ah Shen, is Wantang angry at Dongdong? Dongdong is still young—I'll apologize to her on his behalf, okay?"
"No need."
"......"
Xie Wantang didn't feel like hearing the rest; she walked to her and Lu Yanshen's bedroom, pushed the door open, and with a bang, shut it hard.
