Chapter 118: The Gap

~7 min read 1,300 words

Center of the Fourth Defense Zone Inner City.

Over a dozen department heads from the Inner City gathered together; they had not rested well last night, and now some still had faint dark circles under their eyes.

"Damn it, we can't even get close to the Transport Aircraft now. Those soldiers just fire warning shots if anyone moves forward, and if you don't listen, they shoot directly! That's how I got this wound on my left shoulder."

A middle-aged man wearing formal attire pointed to the bandaged wound on his left shoulder as he spoke.

"This Xindi is truly too reckless! Does he want us to be buried along with the Fourth Defense Zone?"

"What's even more hateful are those two, Kelin and Kaxi. Usually, the two of them were still easy to talk to, and we all got along well while working together; they used to turn a blind eye to our actions. I don't know what's gotten into them these past few days, but their attitude toward us has become dismissive. They even took three City Defense Cannons from me!"

A middle-aged man wearing a suit, with a tuft of beard on his chin and a split on the right side of his mouth, said indignantly.

"Zhang Hai, I didn't expect you to have three City Defense Cannons? It seems you haven't hidden little in your own pockets either." A woman with a curvaceous figure, a pair of light brown eyes beneath golden hair, looked at Zhang Hai, her sexy red lips revealing a faint smile.

"Lucy, not a single person sitting here has clean hands, including you; you have quite a lot of medicine hidden in your possession," Zhang Hai retorted unceremoniously.

"Ahem, everyone, the reason we can gather together is for the same goal. As for other trivial matters, let's discuss them after we are safe."

At this moment, an elderly man with somewhat graying hair and a kind face spoke up.

Following the old man's words, the gathering fell into a brief silence.

"Then let's talk about the arrangements for leaving. Everyone, pool your resources together; we are preparing to seize the Transport Aircraft by force. Although the Inner City was held today, it is only temporary, and we all know very well that the Inner City cannot be held. We plan to act tonight, the sooner the better."

"Kelin's side must be on guard against us. With such a big move, I'm afraid they won't just sit and wait for death."

Lucy played with her hair and spoke up.

"At a time like this, don't consider those things. What we need to do is leave the Fourth Defense Zone. Whoever dares to block us, kill them!"

The old man's tone was cold and decisive.

"Since that's the case, let's act as soon as possible." Zhang Hai put down the teacup in his hand, stood up, and straightened his clothes.

The group all stood up to leave, but just then, the door was suddenly kicked open, and a group of fully armed soldiers burst in, aiming at these people preparing to leave.

"What are you doing! Don't you know that people can't just enter here!"

Zhang Hai shouted loudly at the soldiers, somewhat irritable.

But these soldiers paid no attention to Zhang Hai's shouting; the safeties on their Assault Rifles were already off, and the muzzles were aimed at everyone.

Kelin walked in slowly at this time. He looked around at these so-called representatives and spoke slowly.

"Although I am very sorry to disturb your gathering, I am sorry, but I suspect that the purpose of your gathering here is impure. Now I need to ask everyone to leave and cooperate with the investigation."

The old man's eyes narrowed slightly, and he stared at Kelin with a gloomy gaze. "Kelin, you are..."

"Take them away!"

Kelin directly interrupted the old man's words and signaled for them to take these people away.

He originally hadn't intended to deal with these guys, but after Zhao Jian and the others discovered that this group had gathered tonight, they sensed something was wrong and brought the order-maintaining troops directly to arrest them.

Xindi had already set this precedent, so he didn't need to follow the rules. The primary goal was to ensure the Inner City was not breached; no one could play tricks at this critical juncture.

Control these guys first, then investigate the purpose of their gathering.

Kelin was fiercely cursed by some emotionally agitated representatives, but there was not a ripple in his heart.

After watching these representatives being taken away, Kelin slowly exhaled a breath of turbid air and looked toward the towering Giant Wall in the distance.

Just then, several Illumination Flares flew into the sky, lighting up the dark sky over the city wall.

That light caused a commotion among the survivors in the center of the Inner City.

"What's going on?"

"The Beast Race has started attacking again?!"

Kelin looked at the bright light on the distant city wall, his brows furrowed.

This really is just too restless.

Outer City battlefield.

Cidu once again directed his subordinates to climb the city wall and began to roar loudly, "Chop these Two-legged Sheep into pieces! Use their blood to forge our glory!"

"Roar, roar, roar!"

A group of Orcs climbed up the rapidly growing Flesh Siege Towers, letting out bursts of roars!

The city wall began to pour out firepower, shooting down the Orcs that were climbing up.

Among the Orcs attacking below, a group of Orcs did not follow the others to attack; they carried baskets on their backs, which contained Rune Cannonballs prepared for blowing up the Inner City gate.

"Quick! Strive to break this city gate in one go!"

An Orc guard wearing Rune Armor shouted loudly to the Orc warriors behind him.

What he wore was imitated by the High Priest based on the protective gear worn by the Two-legged Sheep, with Beast Race Runes attached to the armor, allowing this piece of Rune Armor to possess defensive capabilities while also increasing offensive means. Even after he put it on, his strength more than doubled.

A force of nearly 80 Orcs, after approaching the city gate, piled the Rune Cannonballs from their baskets at the base of the gate.

Seeing the Rune Cannonballs piled up, the Orc guard threw a few Hand Grenades he had tucked at his waist.

"Boom, boom, boom!"

The flames produced by the explosion engulfed the Orcs who hadn't run far, and even this Orc guard had his face flushed red by the oncoming heat wave.

The sound of the explosion startled the Human Alliance soldiers fighting the Beast Race on the city wall; they felt the city wall beneath their feet seem to vibrate slightly.

Upon sensing the sound of the explosion, Xindi immediately shouted loudly to the Guard beside him, "Go find out! Where did this explosion come from!"

Soon, the Guard ran back with a panicked expression and said to Xindi, "Chief! The explosion came from the city gate; a gap has been blown open in the gate, but only one can enter at a time! A team has already gone there to defend it!"

"What!" Xindi looked at the Guard in surprise. He had been having people watch whether the Beast Race had any Rune Cannons firing at the city gate; did those Beast Race members just use cannonballs to detonate the gate directly?

"Notify the troops at the city gate for me; if the Orcs outside show any abnormalities, you must stop them, at all costs!"

"Yes!"

After the Guard left, Xindi's brows twisted into a knot, and he said regretfully, "I should have thought of it! They would definitely still take breaching the city gate as their main goal! Damn it!"
