Chapter 1350: Returning to the Frontline Fleet of the Canaan Star Alliance
Octavia Sector, rear, Kalini Star, Spaceport.
Dakai Shimo's fleet arrived at this planet.
The state of the fleet could only be described as miserable.
The flagship slowly sailed into the main berth of the Spaceport.
The docking hatch opened, and Dakai Shimo was the first to walk out.
As he stepped onto the soil of Kalini Star, his legs went slightly soft.
This was his first time, after the Zerg, standing on ground without the threat of the Zerg.
The Adjutant stood behind him, his face equally exhausted.
"General, the Kalini Star defense headquarters sent word that they have already prepared a rest camp for us in the Third District. The wounded are being sent to the medical station, and ammunition and fuel are being replenished."
Dakai Shimo nodded.
"Notify all ships to rest according to plan. The soldiers need rest."
The Adjutant hesitated for a moment, then spoke.
"General, the soldiers want to take a look at the battle situation on Chengjia Star before disembarking; the Command Center has real-time monitoring signals."
Dakai Shimo was silent for a second.
"I want to see it too, lead the way."
On one of the fleet's Transport Ships, Canaan soldiers were waiting to disembark.
The cabin was packed with people; forty days of fighting had pushed their bodies and spirits to the limit, but at this moment, there was a long-lost light in their eyes.
Home.
The hatch opened, and the soldiers filed out.
Their gray uniforms no longer showed their original color, covered in Zerg blood, mud, and sweat stains.
A young soldier walked out of the hatch and suddenly stopped when he saw the sky of Kalini Star.
His eyes widened, his lips trembled, and tears welled up.
"The... the sky is blue, it's so beautiful."
The veteran beside him patted his shoulder.
"We're home, kid, we're home."
The young soldier squatted down and touched the soil on the ground with his hand.
The soil was gray, with fine particles, not the putrid stench of Zerg biomass.
He clutched the soil in his palm, pressed it against his face, and cried.
Another soldier walked off the Transport Ship, his left arm bandaged, a piece of shrapnel still embedded in his right shoulder.
He stood on the ground of the Spaceport and looked up at the sky.
He closed his eyes, feeling the temperature of the sunlight.
For the first time in forty days, he felt warmth that didn't come from the heat of a gun barrel, but from a star.
"Brother, stop spacing out, let's go to the camp."
The soldier behind him pushed him.
He opened his eyes, said nothing, and stepped forward.
The camp was set up in the Third District near the Spaceport; there wasn't enough housing, so most people could only live in tents.
But as long as there was a place to shelter from the wind and rain, clean water, and hot food, these soldiers were already satisfied.
A soldier walked into the tent assigned to him and saw a simple cot, a clean blanket, and a pot of hot water.
He stood there, staring at these things for a long time, then slowly sat down, wrapped himself tightly in the blanket, and closed his eyes.
"Alive, I'm still alive."
The Kalini Star defense Command Center was located in an underground bunker in the Third District.
This was the core of the entire planet's defense system, and holographic screens displayed monitoring footage from various directions.
On the main screen in the center of the hall, the real-time battle situation transmitted back from Chengjia Star was playing.
When Dakai Shimo walked into the Command Center, the officers inside stood at attention one after another.
Dakai Shimo raised his hand to signal them to continue working, and he walked to the main screen himself.
On the screen, the first defense line of Chengjia Star was in fierce battle.
The gray Krieg soldiers were firing silently in the trenches.
People fell beside them constantly, but those behind immediately filled in; there was no panic, no screaming, and not even anyone looking back.
Shell casings ejected from the ejection ports, landed on the ground, and piled up into small hills.
The corpses of the Zerg piled up into a low wall in front of the trenches, but new Zerg stepped on the corpses and continued to charge.
A Canaan officer stood next to Dakai Shimo and said in a low voice.
"General, the Death Korps of Krieg of the Xiuluo Saint, their casualty rate has already exceeded forty percent, but the defense line has not retreated a meter."
Dakai Shimo did not speak.
He stared at the screen and saw a Krieg soldier hit in the upper body by a Bio-Plasma cannon, his entire chest cavity burned through, and the corpse fell.
The soldier beside him did not pause, directly moving his firing position to fill the vacancy.
"They aren't afraid of death."
Dakai Shimo said.
The Canaan officer replied.
"They don't care at all."
The image on the screen switched, showing the Eastern Defense Line.
A golden figure stood in front of the trench, facing the surging Zerg swarm alone.
The Guardian Spear spun in his hand, and every strike took the lives of several Zerg.
Zerg corpses piled into a small hill beneath his feet; he stood atop the mountain like a golden statue.
The pupils of Dakai Shimo contracted slightly.
"Who is that?"
The Canaan officer's voice was very low.
"Adeptus Custodes, the Emperor's guards, Nuochaqigan."
In the footage, a Tyranid Warrior charged toward Nuochaqigan.
The Spear pierced into the Tyranid Warrior's chest, was pulled out, and swept across; the heads of three Termagants flew up.
As the Tyranid Warrior fell, he had already turned to the next target.
Dakai Shimo was silent for a long time.
The image on the screen switched again.
Mortarion stood alone at the edge of the trench on the Western Defense Line, his pale Power Armor splattered with Zerg blood.
A Hive Tyrant charged at him, four Scything Talons hacking down simultaneously.
Yet, the entire process of Mortarion dealing with it took less than ten seconds.
Dakai Shimo's breathing became slightly rapid.
The footage switched to the sky.
A fleet of Dusk Raiders Destroyers was locked in combat with Zerg bio-ships; a gray assault ship was struck by Bio-Plasma, and the fire of the explosion bloomed in the starry sky.
The other assault ships continued to attack.
Dakai Shimo closed his eyes.
A moment later, he opened them again.
"If it were our troops, how long could we hold the first line of defense?"
There was dead silence in the Command Center.
The Canaan officer lowered his head.
"General, our morale... cannot hold."
Dakai Shimo did not blame him.
"Continue playing."
In the camp, Canaan soldiers sat around several makeshift holographic screens, watching the battle situation on Chengjia Star.
The video was surveillance footage transmitted back from Chengjia Star; although it lacked the tension of a live broadcast, the intensity of the tragedy in the images was enough to make anyone who had experienced war feel suffocated.
A soldier with a severed leg sat in a wheelchair, staring at the golden figure on the screen.
Nuochaqigan's Spear pierced through one Zerg body after another, and Zerg corpses piled into a mountain beneath his feet.
"That person... who is he?"
The soldier in the wheelchair asked.
The soldier beside him shook his head.
"Don't know, he seems to be a Xiuluo Saint."
The soldier in the wheelchair was silent for a moment.
"When we defended the Aelius Sector, forty days, how many people died, and the defense line was lost."
He pointed at Nuochaqigan on the screen.
"He alone, guarding in front of that trench, the Zerg cannot get past."
