Chapter 259: Let's Try It First

~7 min read 1,309 words

Zerg Breeding Ground.

A skin-and-bones youth was licking the moisture from the mud on the ground; his eyes looked slightly weary, but a glimmer of light still remained within them.

Not far away, a youth who looked to be in his twenties and much older than him watched the boy's state and shouted with a look of disdain, "Jixiang! Get the hell away! You're such an eyesore here!"

Jixiang was already skin-and-bones, and with his body currently several times weaker, the youth's kick sent Jixiang rolling on the ground several times.

The surrounding Human survivors looked toward this spot, yet not a single person stepped forward to stop the youth's behavior; several young men who did not look very thin even swallowed their saliva as they watched the youth's state, their gazes looking greedily at Jixiang.

People even hoped for Jixiang to die, so that they wouldn't go hungry for the next few days.

"That's enough, Baofa, there's no point in doing this."

A steady voice came over; the appearance of this voice caused the survivors here to shift their gazes one after another to the location the voice came from, no longer looking at Jixiang.

After hearing this voice, Baofa stopped his actions and returned to the crowd to sit down.

Jixiang felt the world before his eyes spinning; after his abdomen took that kick, his internal organs were all sending signals of pain, until a man draped in a piece of tattered cloth with visible muscles appeared before him, helped him up, and checked his condition.

"Hmm, it's alright, nothing too serious."

Baofa looked at the man and clicked his tongue, saying, "You've only been at the Breeding Ground for a few days, aren't you a bit too fond of meddling? Where did you lot come from? Your strength is so high?"

The man looked at the youth before him, a scar on his right eye looking particularly striking, and said in a low tone.

"I don't care how you were before, but now, I don't want to see that scene happen in front of me again!"

Having witnessed the man's strength, Baofa said nothing more, but several men who were not very thin stood up, looking at this man with faces full of disdain and gazes full of provocation.

"You seem to like meddling quite a bit; are you a good fighter?"

The man walking at the very front found a wooden stick from a pile of abandoned dirt and walked up to the man draped in tattered cloth.

"I don't really like fighting, but if you want to fight, I'm happy to oblige."

As soon as the words fell, the man's right hand struck out rapidly, punching the abdomen of the man holding the wooden stick, directly knocking the man who had provoked him to the ground.

"Ugh... urgh..."

This punch had great force, knocking the man's stomach acid out and onto the ground.

"Go! Take him down!"

The several men behind rushed up together, wanting to use their numbers to suppress this man with explosive combat power.

"Boom... boom... boom!"

The result was obvious; this man draped in tattered cloth knocked the survivors rushing at him to the ground one punch at a time.

This scene stunned all the surrounding survivors; the strength the man before them had just displayed was not something they, as ordinary people, could compare to.

"I am a rather 'peaceful' person; as long as you follow the rules I set, everyone will be fine. Of course, I welcome warriors to challenge the rules I've set at any time. All the rules previously implied here are abolished; these few just now were only a warning, next time you won't have such good luck. By the way, my name is Fengjing."

As he spoke, Fengjing picked up a stone from the ground with a friendly face, and as the muscles on his exposed arm tensed, the stone was squeezed until several cracks appeared.

Seeing that this group of Human survivors had already been cowed by him, Fengjing nodded with satisfaction and left this area, wandering among the ruins of the houses within the Breeding Ground.

Baofa watched Fengjing's departing back and whispered, "It seems a group of powerful characters has come to our Breeding Ground; it's necessary to tell that lord."

When night fell, Fengjing returned to the area where he was staying, where dozens of Humans draped in tattered cloth rags had lit a bonfire and were busy with their own affairs.

"Captain, we went to a few more chaotic areas today and established our rules."

A middle-aged man whose left arm had been cut off halfway nodded after hearing Fengjing's reply and said.

"Hmm, take it slow. We are lucky enough to have survived the battlefield. Although I don't know how the situation is over at the 66th Legion, now is not the time to think about that. We need to know how far we are from the Military District and save the survivors here."

The man was named Leiside, a Sergeant from the original 66th Legion. When he and the Deputy Regiment Commander were fighting the Zerg, they were swallowed into the belly of a large-mouthed insect. Although he didn't know why, after Leiside woke up, he found that he had been brought by Zerg troops into a Hatchery. After the Hatchery separated the corpses from the living soldiers, it kept most of the living soldiers in the Hatchery, and only a small portion of the soldiers were taken away from the Hatchery by Zerg troops again, and together with the Human survivors the Zerg had captured from who knows where, they were brought to this Zerg Breeding Ground.

When Leiside first arrived at the Zerg Breeding Ground, he found that the Humans here were about to be turned by the Zerg into beasts without thoughts or Human rationality; he even saw scenes of cannibalism here.

This made Leiside feel a sense of discomfort. Looking at the dozens of comrades following him, he decided to stop the Humans here from becoming beasts. Since they were all Psionics who had awakened a Back Spirit, coupled with their experience on the battlefield, dealing with the troublemakers in the Breeding Ground was very easy.

"Captain, the survivors in the Breeding Ground now know of our existence. After teaching some of the troublemakers a lesson, they've quieted down. The most important problem now is the nutritional substances the Zerg drop periodically. The day after tomorrow is the time for those nutritional substances to be dropped; we must control the food source so we can prepare for the subsequent situation."

A soldier with wrinkled skin and obvious scars spoke to Leiside.

Leiside nodded, his gaze watching the flames constantly leaping in the bonfire, and said in a low voice.

"We can only do our best; after all, they are all Humans, so we'll save as many as we can. I estimate that we are very far from the Military District. Those Breeding Grounds closer to the Military District have already had their survivors rescued back to the Outer City under the command of Chief Ji Bu. However, we must still tell those survivors that the Military District will not abandon them; it's just that they haven't found this place yet, and troops will definitely come to save them later!"

Hearing Leiside's words, the other soldiers remained silent. Everyone knew that after this lie was told, it would, to a certain extent, give the survivors here a glimmer of hope, but as time passed, the weight of this hope in the hearts of the survivors would become lower and lower.

By then, they would only be able to use force to forcibly intimidate this group of survivors.

"Understood, regardless of anything else, let's try it first." Fengjing clapped his hands and said to Leiside.
