Chapter 524: Investigating the Destroyed Zerg Hatchery
The leader of the Kandong Tribe, Alanfu, climbed out of his bed immediately upon hearing the horn, donned his Armor, and headed to the tribe's council tent.
As Alanfu lifted the tent's felt flap, he looked at the several Chiliarchs who had already gathered and spoke in a low tone.
"What is happening on the Zerg side? Why haven't the explosions stopped?"
"It seems the Zerg are engaged in battle with a unit of Two-legged Sheep, and that Two-legged Sheep unit has the upper hand."
The Beast Race Decurion kneeling by the map raised his head and reported in a low voice.
Upon hearing this news, the Beast Race Chiliarchs all wore expressions of disbelief.
"How is this possible? Even if those Zerg are weak, they couldn't possibly be beaten into such a state by Two-legged Sheep, could they?"
"That's right, are you sure those are Two-legged Sheep units? I've heard that the Zerg have Zerg with Human appearances; could this be a Zerg ruse?"
"Do the Zerg really want to fight us? Are they insane?"
Several Beast Race Chiliarchs began to voice their opinions, and just then, Chiliarch Batu stood up, gripping his scimitar; the silver skull ornament on the hilt reflected the firelight.
"Give me two hours; I will go to the border to investigate what tricks those Zerg are up to."
Alanfu sat in his seat, his ugly face devoid of expression, and he slowly nodded, agreeing to Batu's request.
"Very well, Batu, I will give you 100 Dire Wolf riders; make sure you find out what tricks the Zerg are playing. Priest Apprentice Chaokemu, I must trouble you to inform the surrounding tribes of the Zerg's anomalies; we must prepare for the Zerg to launch a surprise attack on us."
The Priest Apprentice called Chaokemu nodded slightly, his fingers tracing his staff, and a mist surged within the gem at the top of the staff.
"Rest assured, leave this matter to me."
A blue light lit up on the staff in Chaokemu's hand, along with a few wisps of frost.
After arranging everything, Alanfu tapped his knuckles on the table, staring at the obsidian piece on the sand table that represented the Kandong Tribe.
"This Zerg movement gives me a very bad feeling."
Alanfu's voice made the tent suddenly quiet; Alanfu unbuckled his shoulder armor and threw it to the edge of the sand table, grabbed the bronze wine vessel beside the sand table and drained it in one gulp, the murky liquid flowing from the corners of his mouth.
"However, once the forces of several tribes are assembled, we won't fear the Zerg coming to attack us."
Outside the Kandong Tribe.
Batu was leading one hundred Beast Race cavalrymen; beneath them were hairless Dire Wolves covered in dark green scales.
As they were about to reach the Zerg border, Batu raised his right hand and pulled hard on the reins with his left, causing the Dire Wolf beneath him to stop; the Beast Race cavalrymen following behind also pulled on their reins with both hands, bringing their Dire Wolves to a halt.
Batu took a deep breath; the air was thick with a rusty, bloody scent—the wind coming from the Zerg Territory to the south.
The hundred Dire Wolves pawed restlessly at the ground under the sunlight; their dark green skin was covered in tortoise-shell-like scales, and the claws of these three-meter-long giant beasts were as sharp as daggers.
Their saddles were tanned from the peritoneum of burrowing worms, shimmering with iridescent luster under the sun's rays.
Batu narrowed his eyes, looking toward the distance where the Zerg Hatchery should have been; it had vanished, leaving only a patch of charred flesh.
"What the hell are these Zerg doing? Could it really be that Two-legged Sheep attacked them?"
Batu withdrew his gaze and drew his scimitar halfway from his waist; the sharp blade reflected Batu's ugly face.
Batu was pondering whether he should continue forward to see exactly how the Zerg Hatchery had been destroyed.
After a few minutes, Batu's eyes narrowed, he sheathed his scimitar once more, and shouted in a booming voice to the Beast Race cavalrymen who were taking a brief rest.
"Boys, mount up!"
Batu's roar made even the most irritable Dire Wolves instantly quiet.
Receiving Batu's order, the Beast Race cavalrymen mounted their respective Dire Wolves again.
On their bare arms, indigo War Marks flowed in the sunlight—these were the Runic totems of the Kandong Tribe.
Their heavy Runic Bone Armor was stained with black and red blood; when a hundred men leaped onto the wolves' backs simultaneously, the collision of the bone armor emitted a crisp sound.
Batu rode his Dire Wolf and charged down the gentle slope first, the ground splashing up a cloud of dust under the Claws.
Batu leaned low, and the lead Dire Wolf suddenly emitted a series of high-frequency hisses—this was the signal that prey had been discovered.
On the devastated land ahead, hundreds of Zerg remains were emitting wisps of blue smoke; the edges of the wounds pierced by some kind of weapon had turned charred black.
"Stop!"
Batu suddenly tightened the reins.
The Dire Wolf's front paws dug deep into the earth, plowing a ten-meter-long trench into the ground.
As he flipped off the wolf, the Runic scimitar at his waist was already unsheathed.
The tip of the blade lifted a severed Zerg forelimb; the cut was neatly sliced and had been roasted by high heat—this was definitely not a wound caused by ordinary weapons.
"What kind of weapon caused this damage? The Two-legged Sheep shouldn't have such weapons; could it be that the Zerg can no longer hold out? Are they trying to make us share the attacks from other races?"
Batu felt a flash of inspiration, and the more he thought about it, the more likely he felt this idea was; he immediately shouted to the Beast Race cavalrymen behind him.
"Split up and search, see if there are any traces of other races stationed nearby!"
"Yes!"
Just then, a series of booming sounds accompanied by a tremor of the earth left these Beast Race cavalrymen unsure of what was happening.
The Dire Wolves beside the Beast Race cavalrymen began to hiss and roar, their emotions becoming unstable; even the soothing efforts of the Beast Race cavalrymen could not calm the Dire Wolves down.
"Damn it, why won't the Dire Wolves listen?"
"They want to run away, damn it, what are they afraid of?"
"Hold the reins! Don't let the Dire Wolves run away!"
The Beast Race cavalrymen hurriedly pulled on their respective Dire Wolves to prevent them from escaping.
Batu pulled the reins tight, the veins on his two arms bulging as he forced his Dire Wolf to submit; he looked around, his heart filled with doubt.
What kind of existence could make these Dire Wolves so afraid? Is it the race that destroyed the Zerg Hatchery?
The booming sound grew louder, and Batu could clearly feel the ground beneath his feet shaking.
Batu looked toward a high slope behind the ruins of the Zerg Hatchery; Chimera Armored Vehicles slowly appeared from behind the high slope, and Batu's pupils contracted sharply. He turned to shout a warning, but saw those Chimera Armored Vehicles fire beams of Laser Beam.
Blood splattered in the formation of the Dire Wolf riders, and many Dire Wolves and their riders were riddled with holes.
"Enemy attack! Break formation!"
Batu's roar brought the remaining Beast Race cavalry back to their senses; the surviving Wolf Riders instantly split into three whirlwinds, the dark green wolf shadows beginning to scatter and flee, while the Beast Race cavalry had already unslung the throwing spears from their backs—the spear tips glinting with a ghostly blue, cold light.
Just then, a shout came from the distance.
"For the Emperor!"
