Chapter 537: Pursuing Death
After hearing Heertui state another possibility, the White-Robed Bishop nodded slowly.
"Zzz—"
The eyeball in the palm of the pale blue scale suddenly erupted with ghostly blue electric arcs, which converged into dense chains of biological data.
Writhing neural bundles hung down from the ceiling, their terminal suckers attaching precisely to the temples of every attendee.
"Recently, the Zerg and the Elemental race have been struggling against the Cyberk.
However, the two races seem to have joined forces to defend against the Cyberk on the same battlefield; if they had not chosen to unite, I fear one race would have already been wiped out."
Ripples like data streams spread across the White-robed Bishop's pale blue scales.
"However, even with the two races united, they still appear to be struggling against the Cyberk.
Ah, as long as the Cyberk survive the early stages, their evolution speed will reach an astonishing rate; after every battle, they evolve in all aspects based on the battlefield situation.
It is just a pity that the direction of their evolution runs counter to ours."
The neural bundle at the back of Heertui's neck twitched uncontrollably; he could clearly perceive the Bishop's mental tentacles probing his own memory cortex.
The memory fragments forcibly stripped from Ji Bu before his death were being reassembled.
"Yingzhou's summoned creature..."
Heertui spoke suddenly, and with the help of the White-robed Bishop, those broken memory fragments in his mind merged with the things he knew.
"According to descriptions from some of our warriors, the soldier summoned by that Yingzhou experienced a very cruel environment; what he summoned is no longer a normal Human soldier, but a group of fanatical madmen."
As he spoke, Heertui used the White-robed Bishop's neural bundles to display the scene, drawing from the memories of some Hou warriors he had collected.
A blurry battlefield shadow appeared before every Hou.
A group of soldiers wearing grey coats and gas masks were slaughtering their own kin.
Unlike the sparring they had imagined, these masked Human soldiers were truly killing their own comrades.
A 45-centimeter-long bayonet stabbed into a comrade dressed the same as them, then was pulled out, flicking a line of blood.
What was most unsettling was the emotional fluctuation displayed by every masked Human soldier.
They felt no terror in the face of death, or were they even... pursuing death?
"How is this possible! Even if a Human's will is firm, there will be a weak side, there will be weaknesses!"
"Are they pursuing death? What is the meaning of their birth? Why are they slaughtering each other!"
The Hou high-level officials present all expressed confusion; they did not understand why these Human soldiers would commit such acts.
The footage continued to play until the slaughter ended, and these surviving soldiers were told they were qualified to fight for the Emperor and atone for the betrayal of their ancestors.
And in the eyes of this Human soldier, the world was all black and white, save for one statue that radiated dazzling golden light.
Seeing the golden light radiating from this statue, even knowing it was a memory, these Hou high-level officials felt the strangeness of that golden light.
The footage ended, and the Hou high-level official who had just called it impossible no longer spoke.
This memory had a great impact on them.
"So, these Human soldiers who slaughter each other, is their goal merely for that statue? To become soldiers of that statue, they actually slaughter each other."
"But why would they do this? It's just a statue!"
"It shows how important that statue is to them, even in memory."
The White-Robed Bishop spoke again, causing the other Hou high-level officials to stop talking.
"Currently, the various races on this planet have begun to fight each other, and as for the Humans in the Ninth Defense Zone, after Ji Bu died, the Humans there seemed to have been shielded; they cannot bewitch others, and there is not even a chance for them to appear in their minds.
Could this have something to do with that Yingzhou?"
"Bishop, I suggest letting a Diviner perform a divination on the actions of the Ninth Defense Zone, so that we can make the right choice."
Heertui spoke at this moment, his dark green pupils looking at the others present.
"That's right, Bishop, please have the Diviner take action!"
Seeing this, the White-Robed Bishop pondered for a few seconds and said.
"Hmm, I will consider this proposal. Let's stop here for today."
After ending the meeting, the White-Robed Bishop had Heertui follow him, and the two arrived in a dim room.
In the semi-transparent chambers, there were dozens of pods containing Humans spliced together by various pieces of flesh, forming a huge ball of meat.
"Heertui, do you think we should restore the messages to the Ninth Defense Zone now?"
Heertui shook his head and said.
"No, Bishop, I suggest waiting for the Diviner to produce a result before deciding whether to restore them!"
The White-Robed Bishop nodded, his gaze fixed on the environment in the room, and he whispered softly.
"Until now, some of these Humans still maintain a certain level of consciousness; sometimes, one has to admire the firmness of the Human will, but a firm will cannot save you; only evolution! Evolution is the only salvation!"
The eyeball in the White-Robed Bishop's palm ejected a wisp of fluorescent blue electric arc, and the glowing meat tumor on the dome expanded several times over in response.
Thick purple light spilled down, illuminating the circular trough in the center of the room in minute detail.
Dark green liquid was pumped into the giant mass in the room through writhing neural pipes.
Through the semi-transparent pod membrane, one could see Human limbs like cloth dolls torn apart and randomly pasted together by a child—three male spines were inserted diagonally into a female torso, sticking out like dorsal fins with bone-white spikes.
"However, it is precisely because their will is firm that my work can be more perfect; control the Communication Tower in the Sixth Defense Zone to send a message to the Ninth Defense Zone."
Data ripples spread across the Bishop's pale blue scales, and the semi-transparent culture pods suddenly flipped over in unison.
Heertui's compound eyes contracted violently; he saw that semi-transparent neural bundles were growing from the backs of every experimental subject, floating and tangling in the culture fluid like jellyfish tentacles.
Tiny electric sparks burst from the ends of these neural bundles, connecting several pods into a flickering spiderweb.
A sweet, rotten, fishy smell suddenly became intense.
The chest cavity of a certain spliced body suddenly exploded, revealing a beating dark red tumor inside, its surface covered in writhing gullies like Human gums.
"Interesting."
The White-Robed Bishop pressed his scaled palm against the restless pod, and those tooth-like folds immediately secreted black mucus to seal the wound.
"They are roaring."
Heertui's auditory neural cords suddenly captured a high-frequency tremor.
Those floating lips were indeed opening and closing, but all the sounds had turned into wails similar to fingernails scraping against a metal plate.
The Bishop's Third Eye split open between his forehead, and a dim blue beam of light swept across the largest incubation pod in the center.
Inside the pod curled a centipede-like creature stitched together from nine human bodies, with bronze-colored gears embedded at all twenty-eight joints.
"These high-ranking officials from the Sixth Defense Zone are still so active even now!"
The White-Robed Bishop's neural cords pierced into the pod, and the monster immediately lowered all its arms submissively.
"If they also produce a second generation, will they become as treacherous as those in the Ninth Defense Zone?"
Thinking of this, the mouth on the White-Robed Bishop's neck revealed a trace of a smile.
