Chapter 610: Two Corpses in the Stairwell

~7 min read 1,279 words

After hearing this answer, Yingzhou did not hear the notification that the task was complete, and he could not help but frown in thought.

"Could it be that I missed something? I went to the control room, met the councilors in the meeting room, what other place could I have missed?"

Yingzhou lowered his head and muttered to himself, leaving this Sixth Defense Zone Councilor completely bewildered.

He was full of doubt regarding the young man before him who claimed to be from the Ninth Defense Zone; what was he just saying, what place was missed?

The Sixth Defense Zone Councilor looked toward the meeting room door, hearing no sounds of battle coming from outside.

What did he mean by missing something?

Suddenly, this Sixth Defense Zone Councilor spoke to Yingzhou.

"Right! Previously, two councilors discovered that the Hou had already bewitched the vast majority of humans, so they engaged in a fierce battle with the Hou. They retreated all the way to the stairs; it seems a collapse occurred over there, and I don't know what happened after that."

The stairwell! There was still the stairwell he hadn't been to!

There was still a stairwell he hadn't visited; could there be other intelligence there?

After hearing this news, Yingzhou stood up directly, looked at the Sixth Defense Zone Councilor who had regained his senses, and spoke.

"My spiritual power can only allow you to recover clarity for a short time. The flesh and blood of the alien race have already fused significantly with your body, you..."

"Go quickly! Being able to see you at the final moment of my life, being able to see the hope of humanity, this is enough.

We... will survive, right?"

Hearing the Sixth Defense Zone Councilor's voice begin to stutter, Yingzhou turned and began walking toward the meeting room door.

"We will! I will take revenge on these alien races! I will make them pay the price for their actions!"

"Is... that so? That would... truly... be... great..."

Yingzhou did not hear the words of this Sixth Defense Zone Councilor and walked out after opening the meeting room door.

This Sixth Defense Zone Councilor's body was filled with the flesh-and-blood creations of the Hou. Although he looked like a human on the outside, apart from his consciousness and skin, his body was full of alien products.

Yingzhou walked out of the meeting room and saw five Grey Knights slaughtering in the corridor. The five formed a tall city wall, and no Hou warrior could get close to him.

"Valantis, find someone to come over and accompany me on a trip!"

Valantis swept away the Hou in front with the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Cleaving Halberd in his hand and said to Dregoen over the communication channel.

"Dregoen, you go!"

"Understood, I will absolutely not let any aliens get close to the Emperor!"

After pulling the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword out of a Hou warrior's body, Dregoen said in a light tone.

Seeing the Grey Knight holding the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword come before him, Yingzhou immediately spoke when he saw the other party preparing to salute again.

"Let's go!"

"Emperor... I obey your will."

Dregoen had just prepared to kneel on one knee, his legs bent halfway, when he saw the Emperor already walking toward the stairwell entrance.

He could only hurry to walk in front of Yingzhou and kick open the door to the stairwell.

"Bang!"

As the stairwell door was kicked open by Dregoen, dozens of tentacles stabbed toward Dregoen.

"Alien creation!"

Dregoen spun and slashed, the blade edge carrying azure psionic energy to draw an arc.

The tentacles were severed at the root three inches from his faceplate, the stumps falling while hissing with blue smoke.

Boots crushed the semi-coagulated blood scabs on the ground, and Dregoen's Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword began to clear out the alien creations inside, which let out intermittent wails.

Yingzhou followed behind Dregoen and saw that at the collapsed corner of the stairs, the exposed ends of the steel bars were wrapped in green neural bundles.

Those twisted veins were supporting two human-shaped shells; their tattered suits had councilor badges pinned to them, but their abdominal cavities had already turned into vessels for blooming flesh-flowers.

The eyeballs in the center of each flesh-flower suddenly turned in unison toward the intruder, pupils contracting to the size of needle tips.

"Alien!"

Dregoen roared and swung the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword, the blade slicing through the incoming energy bombs in mid-air, and the splashing venom burned blue flames onto his psionic shield.

Dregoen plunged the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword into the ground beneath his feet, the runes on the hilt flared, holy fire spread along the neural bundles, and the heretical flesh inside the stairwell instantly turned to charcoal.

Yingzhou walked to the two councilor corpses that had been burned to charcoal by Dregoen, wanting to see if there were any clues inside their bodies, but he saw a spiritual power rune on the wall where the two had just been supported.

"This is... left by them?"

Yingzhou bypassed Dregoen and walked to this spiritual power rune.

Seeing the Emperor walk to the place where the alien filth had been, Dregoen wanted to speak a warning, but his body issued an alert, and he immediately dodged to the side.

Three articulated limbs with bone blades grazed past his psionic barrier, plowing sparks onto the wall.

Dregoen quickly stabilized his posture, and the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword he threw backhanded severed the Hou warrior hiding above the stairs at the waist.

The upper body of this Hou warrior was still crawling when its head was crushed by the foot of the arriving Dregoen.

Pulling the Heavenly Punishment Demon-Breaking Sword from the wall, Dregoen returned to Yingzhou's side again, guarding the surroundings.

When Yingzhou reached out and touched the spiritual power rune, the rune seemed to sense Yingzhou's human aura and instantly dissipated.

And the scene before Yingzhou also changed; in a patch of white mist, Yingzhou saw two humans wearing councilor uniforms waving at him.

Yingzhou walked in front of the two and, based on their appearance, roughly determined their identities.

These two should be the human corpses that were just supported on the stairwell wall.

"We are councilors of the Sixth Defense Zone. This is some intelligence we left behind; it only triggers this spiritual power rune when human spiritual power approaches."

"I originally thought no one would trigger this spiritual power rune, but I didn't expect that someone could actually survive! Has the Sixth Defense Zone already driven the Hou out?"

Yingzhou looked at the two excited human councilors, and after a few seconds of silence, he decided to tell them the truth.

"No, the Sixth Defense Zone ultimately fell."

Upon hearing Yingzhou's answer, the two behaved very normally, as if they had long anticipated this result.

"It fell? That's normal, after all, the situation at the time was already at its end, and the fall was just a matter of time."

Another Councilor looked toward Yingzhou and asked curiously.

"Then who are you?"

"I am a Councilor from the Ninth Defense Zone. After detecting anomalies in the Sixth Defense Zone, I established contact with the Alien Race in the Sixth Defense Zone, wanting to know about the situation regarding the fall of the Sixth Defense Zone.

But whether I look at the work logs of the Control Console or ask the Councilors in the Meeting Room who still have Human consciousness, the information I get is more or less the same. I don't know if you have any other useful intelligence here; any kind of intelligence will do."
