Chapter 703: Survivors of the Second Defense Zone See Hope (3)
The ruins on the periphery of a "Flesh Mill" in the Second Defense Zone.
Several Valkyrie Transports descended rapidly, clinging to the shadows of the Twisted Spire amidst the gaps in the thin anti-aircraft fire of the Demons.
The shriek of the engines drowned out the roar of the Mill.
"Prepare for landing! 30 seconds! Target area: periphery of the Demon Alien assembly point! Establish a safe zone, rescue the survivors!"
Inside one Transport Aircraft, the calm voice of the Kasrkin Sergeant rang out over the cabin communication channel.
The moment the hatch opened, a hot wave of stench mixed with sulfur, blood, and metallic rust rushed in.
The Kasrkin Sergeant was the first to charge out of the hatch, the Hellgun in his hand instantly aimed at the nearest Lesser Demon that had been attracted by the engine noise and was looking up to shriek.
Zzz—Boom!
A red Laser Beam instantly struck the Lesser Demon's head! The Lesser Demon's corpse twitched on the spot after falling.
Following closely behind, dozens of Kasrkin Shock Troops had instinctively taken control of everything.
"Group A! Left flank! Establish a fire point! Suppress the entrance to the Mill!"
"Group B! Right flank! Clear the high ground! Watch out for those sniper points on the spikes!"
"Group C! Follow me! Search for survivors! Establish a temporary defensive point!"
The Kasrkin Sergeant's orders were concise and efficient.
The Kasrkin soldiers dispersed in groups of three, moving with agility.
One group of Kasrkin soldiers relied on collapsed concrete pillars, their Laser Beams precisely hitting several Blood Ghouls that lunged out from behind a forest of corpses.
Pew! Zzz-crack!
Another group of Kasrkin soldiers fired their Hellguns in a volley, shooting a larger-sized Screamer that attempted to jump down from the side roof into a sieve in mid-air.
Boom!
A Kasrkin soldier carrying a Meltagun melted a crude Automatic Turret controlled by a Demon warlock—which was attempting to turn toward them—along with the Demon behind it into a pool of molten iron.
Their fire net instantly tore open a relatively safe area amidst the chaotic swarm of Demons.
The sporadic counterattacks from the Lesser Demons hit the sturdy Carapace Armor of the Kasrkin soldiers, making dull thudding sounds, or were nimbly dodged.
The Kasrkin soldiers cleared every threat within their field of vision while rapidly constructing makeshift cover.
Just as the massive commotion of the Kasrkin landing and the ensuing sounds of battle arrived.
Jeremy, Lao Kang, and the others knew that the time to gamble with their lives had come!
"Now! Charge over! Toward the direction the fighting is coming from!"
Jeremy roared, disregarding the excruciating pain in his broken leg, crawling forward desperately with his only intact hand and other leg, dragging a trail of blood across the filthy ground.
Lao Kang held the mute girl and gritted his teeth as he stood up.
Long-term starvation and torture had left his body extremely weak, but the will to survive sustained him.
"Keep up! Everyone who can move, keep up! Run toward where the sounds of battle are coming from!"
He shouted to the other few survivors who could still move.
Seven or eight figures, old, weak, sick, and disabled, erupted with unprecedented strength, stumbling out of the shadows of the broken walls where they had been hiding, and lunged toward the location where the Kasrkin were engaging the Demons.
Their target was the group of Kasrkin soldiers closest to them who were constructing a temporary defensive point.
However, the road to hope was never smooth.
"Hiss-ha—!"
Several Lesser Demons wandering on the edge of the plaza discovered this group of "fleeing feed," let out excited hisses, and waved their sharp claws as they flanked them from the side!
Further away, a Demon standing on a high point of the Mill seemed to have also noticed this group of moving "targets" and began operating a crude, rusty mechanical arm with rotating blades, emitting a harsh sound of gears grinding, aiming it at Jeremy and the others!
"Demon! Look out!"
A survivor following behind let out a desperate scream.
Jeremy's heart sank to the bottom.
They were too slow! Too conspicuous! They were about to be surrounded...
"Group C! Ten o'clock direction! Civilians trapped! Demons flanking!"
A Kasrkin soldier who was firing reported the scene he saw immediately via his Helmet Communicator.
"Received! Provide covering fire!"
The Kasrkin Sergeant's voice rang out immediately.
He was a bit further away, but his reaction was extremely fast.
The three Kasrkin soldiers closest to Jeremy and the others instantly adjusted their direction.
The Hellgun in one Kasrkin soldier's hand fired continuous, precise shots, instantly downing the two Lesser Demons charging at the front, with filthy blood splattering everywhere.
Pew! Pew! Another Kasrkin soldier's Plasma Gun fired two scorching blue spheres of light, blowing the third Lesser Demon into burning fragments.
Zzz—Boom!!!
The third Kasrkin soldier raised his Meltagun, and after a brief charge, a thick, incandescent beam of light shot straight at the Demon operating the mechanical arm high up on the Mill!
Boom! The white light hit precisely!
The Demon mechanic, along with the mechanical arm console it was operating, was instantly melted through and exploded!
Burning fragments and the Demon's severed limbs fell from the heights!
The flanking Lesser Demons were cleared, and the threat from above was eliminated! Clean and efficient!
"Quick! Come over here!"
The firing Kasrkin soldier shouted loudly at Jeremy and the others, while vigilantly continuing to scan the surroundings to maintain alert.
Jeremy, Lao Kang, and the others, as if they had grabbed a straw to save their lives, erupted with their final strength and scrambled to get behind the cover constructed from a pile of twisted metal beams that the three Kasrkin soldiers were relying on.
"Safe! Temporarily safe!"
Jeremy collapsed to the ground, gasping for air, the excruciating pain from his broken leg flaring up, but the heavy stone in his heart finally landed.
Lao Kang also slumped down, clutching tightly to the mute girl who was trembling with fear but had miraculously not made a sound, his cloudy old eyes filled with tears of survival and incredulous gratitude.
Other survivors also collapsed one after another; some sobbed in low voices, while others muttered to themselves, thanking these soldiers.
"Medic!"
The Kasrkin Sergeant had already rushed over quickly, bringing another Kasrkin soldier who carried a conspicuous white medical pack.
The medic half-knelt beside Jeremy, skillfully checking the wound on his severed leg that had been bandaged haphazardly.
"The wound is severely infected! It needs emergency debridement and antibiotics! Bear with it, there is no anesthetic left!"
His voice came through the respirator grille, exceptionally calm.
Jeremy gritted his teeth and nodded, beads of sweat rolling down his forehead, but his eyes were filled with the light of hope.
The Kasrkin Sergeant looked at the shaken Lao Kang and the others, his voice steady and powerful, carrying a reassuring strength.
"You are safe. Hold on, the rescue team will completely clear this place soon. Thank the Emperor for His mercy; the Emperor has not abandoned you!"
He glanced at the mute girl in Lao Kang's arms and added.
"How is the child?"
Lao Kang hurriedly shook his head, his voice choked with sobs.
"No... not injured... just scared out of her wits... thank you... thank you all..."
The Kasrkin Sergeant nodded, his helmet turning toward the increasingly intense sounds of battle deep within the Second Defense Zone.
There, silver-blue electric arcs were whipping up a storm of destruction among the horde of Demons, accompanied by deafening explosions and the dying wails of Demons.
"Hold your ground! Establish a perimeter defense! Protect the civilians!"
The Kasrkin Sergeant ordered.
Several Kasrkin soldiers quickly adjusted their positions, firmly protecting the survivors, including Jeremy, Lao Kang, and the mute girl, in the center of the cover.
Cold muzzles pointed once again toward the restless shadows of Demons lurking nearby.
A temporary safe zone had been established; the glimmer of hope had finally pierced through the darkness of this land of despair.
More and more Kasrkin soldiers continued to arrive by Valkyrie Transport, shouting "For the Emperor" as they engaged in slaughter against the Demons before them.
