Chapter 10: Batman Shaken Again
Gordon unbuttoned a button on his shirt collar, twisted his neck, relaxed his shoulders, and then turned to look at the pitch-black rainy night of Cat Getan outside the window, still as cold and damp as ever.
His colleagues greeted each other and left the police station after work. One of them said to Gordon: "Hey, buddy, you shouldn't have taken that tricky case in the first place. Dozens of missing persons? I'm afraid you'll have to check the files until midnight tonight."
Gordon smiled helplessly and said: "You said it, dozens of missing persons. I should at least pay some attention."
After his colleagues left, Gordon brewed himself a cup of strong coffee. He planned to fight all night tonight.
The missing person case in the Mosson block was very strange. In the past, missing persons, no matter how hidden, the bodies of some dead victims would still be found. But none of the 46 people who disappeared in the Mosson block had their bodies appear on the streets of Cat Getan. This was very abnormal.
Cat Getan had never been a city that followed the law. Gangs here were as numerous as hair, and no experienced gang member would go to the trouble of dealing with bodies. They would only throw the bodies from upstairs, although they knew this wouldn't fool the police, but the police were nothing in Cat Getan.
The dozens of people who disappeared in the Mosson block had all kinds of occupations. They had almost no common patterns. The only common point was that they were permanent residents of the Mosson block.
At this time, Gordon was still very young. He was just a small head in the police station, still a long way from being the commissioner. This hot potato that no one wanted to take was finally taken over by Gordon, who had a sense of justice. Although he knew that this was very likely a thankless job, he still planned to do his best to complete it and seek justice for those victims.
Just when he was exhausted from organizing the files, he suddenly felt a movement behind him. He turned his head, and a huge shadow shrouded him. Gordon immediately touched his waist, but his pistol wasn't there.
The person opposite was wearing a black tight suit with two pointed ears on his head and a black cape. His figure was tall, almost blocking all the light from the top of his head. Gordon said cautiously: "Who are you? Why are you in the police station?"
"You can treat me as a vigilante. I am investigating the missing person incident in the Mosson block. I found that you went there today, and yesterday too. You should be the detective in charge of this case. I hope to get the files of these missing persons."
Gordon just wanted to refuse the person opposite. He spoke again: "Of course, I also have some clues here that I can exchange with you, or rather, I can solve this case with you."
Vigilante? Gordon thought, this is too absurd. Such a person cannot exist in Cat Getan City, otherwise, this place wouldn't be called the City of Sin.
The first meeting between Gordon and Batman wasn't pleasant. The two confronted each other in the police station for a long time. Obviously, the newly arrived Batman hadn't learned the essence of leaving without finishing his words. He lingered with Gordon for a long time, and finally, he lost his patience.
Batman found that he was really unlucky. There were countless derelict police officers in Cat Getan City, but he happened to meet the most serious one. Gordon even wanted to protect those files with his life. Batman didn't want to hurt him, so he had no better way.
After Batman cleared the Shuigou Gang, he received a great shock from that beggar. Although he finally saved the beggar, obviously, he still reflected on his behavior and began to stop being high and far-reaching, but started from the simplest.
This starting point of his superhero journey, the Mosson block, besides the Shuigou Gang, wasn't peaceful either. The missing person case in the Mosson block had reached a very dangerous number. The permanent population here was only a few hundred, but more than forty people had disappeared. Batman was determined to take this case as the starting point of his debut.
And, of course, he had a suspect.
A university teacher, not sleeping in the middle of the night, sneaking into the street block where Cat Getan gangs were located, appearing for no reason, and disappearing for no reason. Was there anyone more suspicious than this?
Batman didn't think about finding Shiler directly to confront him, because he knew that he probably couldn't win against this professor in terms of language. He had clashed with Shiler twice and lost both times. He felt he must master sufficient evidence before bringing him to justice.
This day, Batman arrived at the Mosson block again. He couldn't get the files of the missing person case from Gordon, so he sneaked into the home of a missing person, wanting to find some other clues in his house.
He just climbed out of the window and saw Shiler's figure again, under a street lamp not far downstairs. Shiler was holding a black umbrella again, looking at the wall opposite. Batman saw him.
He found that Shiler was staring at the place where the beggar used to stay, but there was no beggar there now. Batman had sent the beggar to the best hospital in Cat Getan and covered all her medical expenses. Although the beggar had both feet amputated, she at least survived.
Because the beggar had been leaning against that wall for years, a dark stain had been left there. The rainwater formed a small puddle where he used to sit, reflecting the dim yellow light of the street lamp. And Shiler stood on the other side of the road, looking at the puddle, not knowing what he was thinking.
The young Batman finally couldn't hold back. He jumped down and appeared in front of Shiler.
"Good evening, Batman. I remember you called yourself that last time, so I'll call you that too."
Batman's eyes under the mask stared at him tightly. He said: "Don't play around with me. You know what I'm here for."
"You are here to be a savior. I know, for example, you saved a poor beggar."
"Is the missing person case in the Mosson block your doing?" Batman asked.
Shiler shook his head. Batman said: "You are the only outsider, and you have no motive to appear here."
Shiler said: "Obviously, you already have the answer in your heart. Why do you still come to ask me? You are always very good at turning things you have already determined into questions and asking others."
"If you get an answer you are satisfied with, you are naturally satisfied. But if you don't get the answer you want, you will become very angry."
"If I say I am not the murderer, will you be very angry? But your anger doesn't come from your sense of justice, but just because I didn't give you the answer you wanted."
"You think you are omniscient, right?" Shiler asked.
"I said, don't play around with me. You are the only one here who is suspicious..."
Before Shiler could speak, he found a bat dart flying past his neck. He seemed to have underestimated the enemy. Whether it was Batman now or Batman later, although they didn't kill, they often beat those criminals severely and didn't shy away from breaking their legs and then sending them to the hospital.
However, obviously, this initial Batman was missing a procedure.
Shiler didn't speak for a while, and another bat dart flew past his neck. This time, Shiler didn't use Spider-Sense to tilt his head in advance, but looked at Batman quietly.
That bat dart left a cut on his neck, and blood flowed out. At this moment, a series of hurried footsteps suddenly came from the end of the alley. A voice shouted: "Stop!"
Batman turned to look at the end of the alley. Under the street lamp, Gordon was aiming his pistol at the two.
"Detective Gordon, hello," Shiler said.
Gordon held his gun and walked over slowly. He said: "Put down your weapons, don't move."
Shiler spread his hands, indicating that he had no weapons, while Batman put away the bat dart he was holding.
Gordon walked closer and found that Shiler's neck was bleeding, and the blood flowed down his shoulder, even wetting his shirt.
Shiler said: "Batman, you made a mistake. You said I was the only one who was suspicious, but this detective obviously doesn't think so."
"Besides me, there is you who appeared here for no reason."
"I am here to investigate the missing person case," Batman said.
"Then I am too," Shiler said. "But obviously, you aren't any nobler than me, because we aren't police. I think only this Detective Gordon has the power to do so now."
"I will find the evidence," Batman said.
"If you also need evidence, then what is the difference between you and the police?" Shiler suddenly asked.
Batman was speechless for a while. He originally thought Shiler would ask him for evidence. Batman also knew that although Shiler appeared where he shouldn't have, this couldn't be used as evidence to prove that he had indeed committed a crime, so he was determined to find clues to prove that Shiler was the murderer.
But Shiler's question hit the nail on the head. Batman thought, he had always thought that the police were very useless because they had to talk about evidence for everything. Even if the murder happened in front of them, they wouldn't arrest the person most suspected if they didn't see the murderer.
It was like this when his parents died. No police officer gave an explanation that should have been given, and no one was brought to justice. His parents died, but no one paid the price.
He thought, if he also needed evidence, then why didn't he go to the Cat Getan Police Department to be a police officer?
But if he didn't need evidence and arrested anyone casually, then what was the difference between him and a criminal?
Batman regretted it. He shouldn't have come forward to talk to Shiler. Every clash with Shiler would make him quite shaken. This kind of psychological and conscious shaking was the most terrible.
Every time he met Shiler, Batman had to go back and think deeply for at least two or three days, figure out the question he raised, find his own answer, firm his confidence, and then come out to be active again.
He felt this was no different from attending classes in college. The teacher raised a question, the student thought about it himself, wrote it into a paper, and at the next meeting, besides checking homework, there were new questions waiting for him, one question after another, as if there was no end.
And Shiler was also complaining in his heart. This Tier was really capable. After Shiler stole most of the fear gas, not only did it not slow down his research speed, but it made him kidnap experimental subjects even more crazily, causing Shiler to be unable to sleep in the middle of the night and have to go clean up this mess. ===== CHAPTER 12 =====
