Chapter 1159: Professor (39)
Shiler, sitting on the sofa, was stunned. He saw a freak wearing a black skull mask rush in, holding a pistol in both hands, the muzzle of which was aimed at Gordon, who was sitting on the side sofa.
Seeing this familiar mask, Shiler recalled that this wasn't the famous DC villain Black Mask, was it?
The reason it was called a famous villain, rather than a big-name one, was because Black Mask's popularity couldn't compare to the most famous Four Heavenly Kings: Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Two-Face. He wasn't entirely an intelligence-route villain, and his character design overlapped somewhat with another villain.
"Roman." Shiler called out his name, because even if he didn't know that in the comics, Black Mask was actually Roman Sionis, the voice of the person who rushed in also indicated that he was actually the young man who had come to Shiler earlier to ask for a recommendation letter but was actually the perpetrator of the hospital murder case.
Black Mask seemed completely unprepared for Shiler to be here. His hand holding the gun hesitated, not knowing who to aim the muzzle at, but Gordon's face turned black. He stared at Black Mask with cold eyes and said:
"Mr. Sionis, put away those little tricks of yours. What do you intend to do? Knock me down with a small pistol?"
Gordon slowly stood up from the sofa. He didn't reach for the gun at his waist but stood calmly in place, looking at Roman's eyes under the mask and saying, "Do you really know what you are doing? You will destroy everything the Sionis family has now!"
"Do you really think I care?!" Black Mask raised his tone and said, "That old bastard is just as damned as you are!"
"Another tragedy of family education." Shiler shook his head. He took a puff of smoke and said, "Using violent means to educate children only results in violence. Those who only submit to authority will spend their whole lives wanting to use violence to establish authority."
"Shut up!!!" Black Mask shouted. He turned his head to stare at Shiler, his gaze full of vigilance. He said, "You really are a troublesome guy! It seems that you saw that I was arrested on purpose when you were at Arkham Psychiatric Hospital, which is why you waited here..."
"I didn't." Shiler denied it very seriously, then said, "However, I was indeed amazed at the time: how could a serial murder case perpetrator have such poor psychological quality? If you were faking it, then everything would be explained."
The vigilance in Black Mask's eyes did not disappear; clearly, he didn't believe Shiler's words at all. He only felt that Shiler's level of playing dumb was first-class, with no trace of acting.
Actually, this wasn't because his imagination was too rich. The key problem had already been mentioned before: in Cat Getan, if a person has neither a strong physique, a fierce temperament, nor sufficient firepower, then how exactly did he survive in such a dangerous environment?
A tall, thin scholar with an elegant temperament and a bookish air could live like a fish in water in a chaotic city like Cat Getan. If he said he knew nothing and saw nothing, even a fool wouldn't believe it.
Black Mask certainly didn't think he was a fool, so he didn't believe a single word Shiler said.
Moreover, he pretended to be arrested and wanted to kidnap Commissioner Gordon, and Shiler just happened to appear in Gordon's reception room. Where in this world could there be such a coincidence?
So, Black Mask raised his vigilance to the highest level in his heart. He didn't turn the muzzle, still pointing the gun at Gordon, but stared dead at Shiler beside him, saying, "Since you arrived here in advance, then presumably, you should have a way to deal with me, right?"
"I certainly do." Shiler nodded. Just as Black Mask put all his attention on Shiler, Shiler turned his head to look at Gordon and said:
"It seems that he was arrested by you just to have you bring him inside the police station, bypassing the tight external firepower protection. But I think you should be able to beat him. If not, I can help you call Batman."
Gordon opened his mouth. He looked at Black Mask again and snorted, saying, "What kind of criminal haven't I seen? Solving this kid doesn't need to trouble Batman."
After finishing, he pulled out the service pistol at his waist. The two stared at each other like cowboys in a Western duel, ready to attack at any time. But at this moment, Shiler suddenly stood up, clapped his hands, attracting the attention of both, and then said:
"You two, I think it's not necessarily the case that we must use such violent means to solve the problem, right? We can sit down and talk properly."
Shiler slowly walked between the two. Gordon glanced at his expression, cleared his throat, and said, "I have nothing to talk about with this kind of unrepentant criminal! Even if he is the young master of the Sionis family, he must pay the price for his crimes!"
Seeing his determined expression, Shiler shook his head helplessly. He turned his head to look at Black Mask and spoke in a gentle tone: "Roman, I believe you are not as evil as you appear. If there is something that makes you have to do this, you can find someone to confide in. Of course, as a psychologist, I am very willing to chat with you..."
"Hypocritical." Black Mask evaluated. He looked sideways at Shiler, who had walked to his side, and said in a cold tone, "You only care about that Bruce Wei En, because he is rich enough. What kind of psychology professor? You're just a sycophant following behind the world's richest man! Just like those people chasing fame and fortune, hoping Bruce Wei En will reward you with some benefits."
Shiler continued to pace slowly. He first walked to Black Mask's side, then slowly walked behind him, and said, "You seem to care a lot about Bruce. Aren't you two friends?"
"Friends?" Black Mask snorted and said, "He is simply the most disgusting kind of person. I could never be with him..."
"Bang!"
Black Mask, who was halfway through his sentence, was directly knocked to the ground. Behind him, Shiler, holding half a vase, shook his head and said, "You don't really think I didn't see that you were stalling for time, right?"
Black Mask, lying on the ground, was covered in blood, with vase fragments scattered around him. Just as he was about to get up, he was stepped on the back by Shiler. So, he could only lie on the ground, clenching his fists and gritting his teeth, saying, "It's already too late. I will make Batman regret it for the rest of his life!"
"You have an accomplice, right?" Shiler's question was in the form of a question, but it was actually a tone of certainty. He said, "Your common goal is not me, but Bruce Wei En—that is, Batman."
"You created a murder case in the hospital and used the fact that both I and Dr. Richard are doctors and serial killers to mislead Batman, making him think that the theme of your serial murder case is doctors who are serial killers."
"Immediately after, your accomplice started calling me, making me think that your target was me and had nothing to do with Batman, so that both I and Batman would relax our vigilance."
"And after that, you yourself came before me, performing a scene of being enraged by being ignored, and finally exposing the process of committing the crime yourself."
"You were deliberately taken away by the police, came to the police station, escaped from the detention room from the inside, and pretended to want to kidnap Gordon to drag down Gordon and the Cat Getan Police Department's police force, so that your accomplice could do something to Batman."
Shiler shook his head gently and said, "You guys always like to engage in these convoluted plans, but I still prefer to be direct."
Just as Gordon stepped forward wanting to do something, Shiler carried the upper half of the vase and hit Black Mask on the back of the head again. After a "bang," Black Mask stopped moving completely.
Gordon swallowed, silently retracting the foot he had stepped out, while Shiler looked at him and said, "... Give me the gun."
Gordon was slightly stunned. He looked at Shiler and said, "Don't you not use guns?"
But he still unbuckled the service pistol at his waist and said, "Sorry, I don't have time to find you a new gun right now, and guns that just came off the assembly line aren't easy to use either. I think this gun of mine is still pretty good."
What made Gordon feel somewhat surprised was that Shiler directly took the gun, neither wearing gloves nor spraying it wildly with disinfectant, but directly put it into the pocket of his trench coat.
Not until Shiler waved his hand at Gordon and walked toward the outside of the Cat Getan Police Department did Gordon walk to the door, lean against the door frame, look at his departing back, and shake his head very confusedly.
Getting into his car, Shiler turned the key and drove the car out of the police station parking lot. His goal was very clear, but it was not Wei En Manor or the Batcave.
Shiler controlled the car to turn and drove onto a ramp on the southeast side of the central turntable. This was the direction of Dick's school.
Clearly, if Black Mask and his gang wanted to deal with Batman himself, there was actually no need to go through so many twists and turns; they could just go straight to Batman.
The reason they wanted to paralyze Batman and Shiler was because they certainly didn't intend to engage in a frontal battle. This group of serial killers didn't care about any dueling spirit; they only wanted to deal a violent blow to the other side, whether physical or mental.
There was no doubt that hurting someone very important to Batman would definitely deal a great blow to Batman, but there weren't many people who had a close relationship with Batman. Catwoman, Gordon, and the children boarding at Wei En Manor were all their targets.
It was just that their first round of plans was to blossom on two fronts at Gordon's police station and Dick's school, making Batman unable to look after both ends, saving one but not the other.
And the reason Shiler thought their other target was Dick rather than Catwoman was precisely because, judging from their choice of Gordon, they didn't seem to have much confidence in their own abilities. Otherwise, they should have directly chosen Shiler as the target, since Shiler was also Batman's teacher.
But since they chose Gordon, who was a normal person, then their other target was also very likely Dick, who was a normal person, rather than Catwoman, who possessed special skills.
Even if they really chose Catwoman, Catwoman should be able to hold on for a long time. By comparison, Dick was much more fragile, so Shiler decided to go see Dick first.
Facts proved that Shiler's judgment was correct. When he arrived at Dick's school, the vast majority of students in the school had already left school, and the lights in all classrooms were off. But only one window had lights on, and there were two figures in front of the window confronting each other.
Shiler pushed open the classroom door and saw the scene inside the classroom. He was stunned.
In the center of the classroom, Dick was tied to a chair, but he didn't seem to be injured, just unable to move or speak.
And in the front and back of the classroom stood two identical Batmen, whose physique, appearance, attire, and expressions on their faces were exactly the same.
Shiler was stunned in place, somewhat bewildered.
