Chapter 1251
Before nightfall, an uninvited guest not listed in the telephone directory paid a visit to Schiller's new home.
Gordon peered through the gap of the door Schiller had opened at the furnishings in the living room and said, "Congratulations on your new home, Professor. I brought back a set of horse tack when I traveled to Texas; it's not particularly valuable, but I think you might like it."
Gordon handed over a box. Schiller examined the material of the box and then saw the exquisite hardware, so he opened the door a bit wider and invited Gordon to come in.
Yet it wasn't just Gordon who walked in; a little girl followed behind him. Gordon pushed the little girl in front of Schiller and said, "This is Mnemosyne. Five years ago, her parents were unfortunately murdered. She was adopted by the Beka Orphanage and later went to the Andreo Orphanage."
"Some time ago, Erem's charitable foundation came to the Andreo Orphanage and selected Mnemosyne to be one of the three lucky children to find a new adoptive family."
"But unfortunately, Mnemosyne has a family history of hereditary mental illness. She had an episode while with her adoptive family. The family that adopted her felt they didn't have the ability to treat her mental illness, so she was returned. Yes, she is the last child to be returned; the other two have already gone back to the orphanage."
"The Andreo Orphanage is an ordinary orphanage and is not equipped with a psychiatrist. In Cat Getan, only the Beka Orphanage can accommodate children with mental problems. I asked Mnemosyne if she was willing to go back, and she refused."
"She is currently staying at my house temporarily, but the child's mental state is indeed not very good. Barbara and I don't know much about professional knowledge in this area, and we can't send her to Arkham Asylum. But besides that place, you are the only psychiatrist I know. Can you provide some advice on mental treatment for this poor child?"
Schiller lowered his head and glanced at the child following behind Gordon. She was a seven or eight-year-old girl wearing a denim pinafore dress that had been washed until it was a bit faded, and her red hair was tied into two braids, which looked like they had been carefully groomed.
She had a pair of brown eyes that were exceptionally focused when staring at Schiller. This kind of gaze is a relatively recognizable characteristic of mental patients, appearing overly focused, cold, and neurotic.
"Her condition is indeed not very good." Schiller took a fountain pen out of his suit pocket, spun it gently in his hand, and said, "Come in."
Gordon breathed a sigh of relief and pushed Mnemosyne's back to let her walk to the sofa in the living room. The little girl remained silent throughout, and Gordon pulled her to sit down on the sofa.
Schiller asked some basic questions, such as age, family situation, living environment, etc. Most of the time, Gordon was the one answering, while Mnemosyne just sat there in silence.
After asking enough, Schiller said to Gordon, "Generally speaking, such a young child cannot be treated with medication, and her situation does not require medication. The family environment has a great influence on them, and frequently changing environments is not conducive to them establishing a sense of security."
"My advice is that you had better take her back and take good care of her. Do not let her change environments again in the short term. If she develops any stress symptoms regarding the new environment, you can call me, and I will give you advice based on the situation."
After finishing, Schiller looked up at the phone placed upstairs, shook his head, and said, "You'll have to ask Batman for the phone number; I don't know it either."
Suddenly, both of them froze because they discovered that Mnemosyne shuddered when she heard the word "Batman."
Gordon was about to squat down immediately, but Schiller gave him a look. Gordon's movements stiffened, but he successfully controlled himself and did not make too much of a reaction.
Then, Schiller cast his gaze onto Mnemosyne's face without changing his expression, and then he saw the little girl's expression of relief. She seemed to be happy that no one had noticed her abnormality.
The name Batman is a household name in some circles, but these circles certainly do not include orphanages. The Dark Knight does not do the work of helping orphans, and even if he has saved children, he will not reveal his name.
Children in orphanages do not see newspapers and live in an almost completely closed environment, so they have no way of knowing about Batman. But Mnemosyne must have heard someone mention this name.
At this moment, Gordon understood that he had found the clue he wanted. Sure enough, Batman was right; in this case, the little girl is a key figure, and so is Schiller. Their meeting will certainly provide new clues.
Before coming, Gordon actually had doubts. He felt that taking such a young little girl to see a madman with an unstable condition was a very risky decision.
But now, Gordon discovered that everything was still under Batman's control. Schiller and that group of uncontrollable crazy killers are not the same kind of people; he is more like Batman.
Therefore, Gordon decided to take the risk and go a step further. He stepped forward, looked at Schiller, and said, "Even if companionship is important, I also feel that professional treatment and guidance are necessary. Can I book a fixed time to bring her here for psychological treatment?"
Schiller thought for a moment and then said, "Yes, we can schedule it for Tuesday afternoon. Confirm the appointment 24 hours in advance. If there is no phone confirmation, I will call two hours before the appointment time."
Gordon nodded, signaling that he understood. Before leaving, the little girl Mnemosyne glanced at Schiller. Her lips moved, but in the end, she said nothing.
Schiller went to a nearby restaurant to finish his dinner. Just as he walked into his new home from the garage door, the phone rang from time to time.
Schiller walked upstairs unhurriedly and picked up the phone. On the other end was indeed Batman's voice: "Tomorrow night, there will be a celebrity banquet held at the Cat Getan Grand Theater. Bruce Wei En is funding it with the purpose of strengthening the relationships between Cat Getan investors."
"The nature of the banquet is relatively private, but there are suspects among the attendees. I might cause some commotion at the ball, and I hope you can cooperate with me as an attendee."
"Bruce Wei En is going too?"
"Bruce Wei En is going too."
Schiller remained silent and did not answer, while Batman said on the other end of the phone, "The new clothes for the ball will be placed on the balcony on the third floor tomorrow morning. There is a laundry shop across the street that can iron clothes. The watch and accessories will be placed on the shelf on the far right of the garage. You prepare the gift yourself."
"Okay," Schiller replied.
"Wait a minute." Barry suddenly stood up in front of the theater seats, stretched out a hand, and said, "I found that they ignored the most important thing."
Everyone looked up at him. Barry looked around and said, "A private banquet, how is Schiller going to get in? He fell from mid-air and doesn't know anyone. How can he participate in the Cat Getan investors' banquet?"
"Actually, I'm a bit curious too," Hal said, rubbing his chin. "It looks a bit like a test of Schiller's abilities by Batman, but it doesn't seem that simple. They seem to be hinting at something again?"
"Suspects," Bruce said. After breaking free from his emotions, Bruce could look at what happened from a more objective perspective, so he analyzed, "It's still the previous line of thinking. Batman wants to know how much Schiller is like him."
"If the collection in that room was to judge his aesthetic by observing what Schiller kept and what he discarded when organizing the collection, then this time, Batman wants to see if Schiller can think of the same things as him when reasoning."
"Not enough clues." Diana frowned tightly. When the beautiful princess frowned her two slender eyebrows, it carried an extra charm. She said in a low tone, "Just based on that corpse, it is completely insufficient to determine who did it."
"It's impossible for there to be only celebrities at the banquet. Waiters, security guards, umbrella boys, and even valet parking attendants could all be Batman's targets. With at most one day and one night, how is Schiller going to investigate?" Constantine narrowed his eyes slightly. He is known as the Hellblazer, and although he doesn't do much detective work, he does have detective-like intuition.
"Unless, in this conversation, Batman also gave some other clues," Jason said, extending a finger.
"Oh, I know," Harley suddenly exclaimed, "The key lies in the new clothes, the watch, and the accessories! Batman is saying that he hopes Schiller can achieve a pivotal social status at the banquet."
"When my dad was still alive, he took me to some banquets. For some banquets, I had to wear beautiful dresses, gorgeous jewelry, and dress as eye-catchingly as possible. But some banquets require dressing more plainly, so as not to steal the limelight from others."
"My mom told me that the attire at a banquet depends on the social status you want to achieve at the banquet. If you want to become a heartthrob and the center of conversation, you must be fully dressed. Ladies should wear gorgeous long dresses, shawls adorned with gemstones, and complete sets of custom-made headpieces, necklaces, and bracelets. Even the shoes hidden under the long dress cannot be sloppy, otherwise, you will show your lack of experience."
"Gentlemen should wear expensive, well-tailored suits. Vests or cummerbunds should also be arranged according to the occasion. Watches, cufflinks, and badges are the top priority. Beards and sideburns should be properly trimmed to fit personal style and must never look sloppy," Diana said, following Harley's words.
Obviously, the two of them are in different social classes. Although Harley's family was still quite wealthy, it was still not "old money." Sometimes she still needed to play dumb to avoid stealing the limelight, or sell herself at the right opportunity, so she paid more attention to her own gender's attire.
And because Diana is a member of the royal family, born noble, and has strong personal abilities, she has an attitude of scrutiny and even staring at the opposite sex at banquets, and has developed the habit of evaluating the degree of pleasing the opposite sex.
Jason nodded and said, "In this way, people like waiters can be ruled out. If Batman's target was this kind of person, there would be no need for Schiller to appear at the banquet so solemnly."
"Conversely, he needs a new face with a pivotal status to appear at the banquet and attract people's attention. It can be said that this is exactly the hint Batman gave Schiller."
Several people nodded, feeling that this analysis was very reasonable. Barry frowned, looking a bit worried, and said:
"But there's only one day and one night left. Where is Schiller going to get a pivotal status? He is a complete visitor from outer space in this universe and has no backing at all. How can he create an identity as a socialite for himself in such a short time?"
Diana was obviously very familiar with this situation. Her long eyelashes trembled slightly, and the beautiful princess brushed her hair and said, "Perhaps, he doesn't need to create an identity as a socialite, or rather, someone will present such an identity to him."
"Who?"
"Whoever has a guilty conscience, that's who."
