Chapter 1520: Schiller's Disappearance (Part III)
The late autumn New York already had some biting cold winds passing through the streets and alleys. Pedestrians on the road were all hurrying, wrapping their scarves tightly, pouring the last mouthful of hot coffee into their stomachs, filling up the momentum to rush to their destination.
When the door of Schiller's office was pushed open, the chill on Eddie hadn't dissipated yet. He was holding two hot coffees in his hand, one of which had only half left.
"Schiller, hurry and take a look at the new planning draft I wrote last night. I think this definitely fits what you want... Schiller? Schiller? Strange, where is the person?"
Eddie looked around the empty office and had to call a nurse from outside the door, but the nurse also shook her head, indicating she didn't know where Schiller had gone.
Eddie had to take out his phone and call Nick, asking: "Director Fury, did Schiller say he went on vacation? I didn't find him in his office."
"What? He didn't report it? Then maybe he has something else to do... Forget it, I'll come find him tonight."
Eddie hadn't left for long when Stark, wearing a mecha, flew in from the window, shouting while flying: "Schiller, no, we have to talk. You really can't go on like this anymore, I'm going crazy!"
Looking at the empty office, Stark was stunned. He flew out of the window again and flew around the entire Arkham Asylum, but the scanning system showed Schiller wasn't here.
So, Stark had to fly to the small clinic in Hell's Kitchen. Just as he pushed the door open and walked in, he saw a figure standing behind the refrigerator door, seemingly taking something from inside.
"Schiller, you... Peter? Why are you here?"
Stark looked at Peter standing behind the refrigerator door with some surprise. Peter stepped back a few steps, poked his head out, and said: "I came to find Dr. Schiller, but found he wasn't here. I decided to make breakfast and then wait for him to come back and eat together."
"Are you also here to find Dr. Schiller? Mr. Stark, maybe the road from the asylum is a bit jammed. He should be here in a while."
Stark looked around, came to the stairs leading to the second floor, looked up, but didn't see that familiar figure in the narrow stairwell.
Peter, who was organizing ingredients, was stunned. He looked at the wall clock next to him and said: "Today is Monday. Dr. Schiller should come over to organize things at this time."
Peter took out his phone while talking, dialed the number, waited for a long time after putting the phone to his ear, and then frowned and dialed the number again, finding that no one answered, he looked at Stark with some worry and said: "Dr. Schiller doesn't answer the phone."
"Call Nick." Stark raised his chin and said.
Peter dialed Nick again and learned from Nick that Schiller hadn't reported going on vacation. And if he wanted to leave for a period of time in the past, he would definitely tell Nick.
"You guys come over first." Nick's serious tone came from the phone. Peter and Stark looked at each other, realizing the seriousness of the matter, and immediately set off to rush to S. H. I. E. L. D.
By the time the two rushed to Nick's office at the S. H. I. E. L. D. base, they found that many people had already arrived. In addition to Nick, Seeing Natasha, and Eddie, there were Captain America Steve, Daredevil Ma Te, Professor X Charles, and Loki.
The Light Alliance was basically all present, and Nick scanned the circle and said: "So none of you have seen Schiller?"
Everyone shook their heads. Peter said first: "Every Monday morning, the doctor goes to the clinic in Hell's Kitchen to organize things, so I waited for him there, but didn't wait for him."
"He is also not at Arkham Asylum." Stark said with his arms crossed and frowning.
"He is not at the Avengers base or the Helicarrier either." Seeing Natasha said, leaning against the wall.
Everyone cast their eyes on Professor X, and Professor X frowned slightly and said: "But this can't be called losing contact, right? After all, it hasn't even been half an hour since we last saw him."
"In the past, if Schiller left for something, he would definitely tell me in advance." Nick walked back behind the desk and sat down, saying: "Have you forgotten? He is an autistic patient and won't easily change his life routine unless there is an emergency."
But Stark sneered and said: "Compared to having an emergency, I think it's more likely he wants to cause trouble again."
Everyone cast their eyes on him. Stark touched his chin and said: "In the past, when Schiller was causing trouble, he would create an alibi, appearing in front of us from time to time, making us think he was just quietly being a psychologist, but in fact, he was causing trouble behind our backs every time."
"And this time, he didn't even create an alibi, suddenly playing disappearance..." When Stark said this, he suddenly revealed a horrified expression. He looked at Nick and said: "Then how big of a thing must he be preparing?"
Peter suddenly raised his hand and asked: "Is it possible that Dr. Schiller had an accident, or was kidnapped by someone? He is in danger now and is waiting for us to save him?"
Other people sighed in unison. Even Steve couldn't stand it anymore. He walked over and hugged Peter's shoulder, saying: "Peter, first of all, there is nothing beyond Schiller's expectation. Secondly, his disappearance doesn't mean he is in danger. Finally, his plans can succeed every time precisely because there are always people like you who want to save him every time."
Peter smacked his lips, and many memory scenes flashed through his brain. He wasn't stupid, naturally knowing how big of a thing Schiller had caused before, and he played an important role in Schiller's plans almost every time, mainly because he was easy to fool.
"We have to find Schiller, but not for Schiller, but for our universe." Stark covered his forehead and said: "Think about it, every big thing he prepared before could still have the energy to create an alibi. Now he doesn't even show his face. Then how big of a surprise must he be preparing?"
Instantly, most of the people present shivered. Stark took in their expressions and said in his heart: "I haven't told you yet that Schiller planned to drive this universe to hit the gods of other universes."
Out of protection for the heart health of the several elderly people present, Stark ultimately didn't say this shocking fact, but Peter had already raised his hand and asked.
"Who was the last person Dr. Schiller saw?"
"He came to find me last time to ask about the liver source for Shi Difen's brother." Nick thought for a while and said: "It was Schiller who calmed Victor to stay here for surgery, so he would definitely wait for the surgery to succeed outside the operating room."
"I'll make a call to the Presbyterian Hospital." Stark said.
After Stark's call went through, the Presbyterian Hospital indicated that they attached great importance to it and asked the nurse on duty that day. When the nurse mentioned that Strange called Schiller into the operating room, the expressions of several people in the room became wonderful.
"Shi Difen is going to be in big trouble." Stark covered his mouth and coughed twice, covering up his laughter and saying: "It seems that Schiller's big plan this time must be centered on the Sorcerer Supreme."
Loki thought for a moment and then said: "Shi Difen shouldn't have offended Schiller, right? The two of them have somewhat similar personalities and are colleagues, so they have always gotten along quite well."
But Ma Te said: "I remember that before I had a car accident and was seriously injured, it was Dr. Strange who performed the surgery on me. At that time, he seemed reluctant. It was Schiller who threatened him to come."
"Oh!" Peter also let out a sudden realization sound, and then said with some annoyance: "I remember now. It was a few years ago when I caused Ma Te to be seriously injured. Dr. Schiller brought Dr. Strange to perform the surgery. Dr. Strange seemed very angry."
"That's not Shi Difen offending Schiller, but Schiller offending Shi Difen. But what can Shi Difen do to him?" Stark sneered, quite disdainfully, and said: "Can he still threaten Schiller?"
At the end of time, in a dilapidated tent on the desolate land of exile, Schiller stared at Strange and said: "Just because I held a ballpoint pen against your forehead a few years ago, you are taking revenge on me like this? Is it worth it?!"
Strange used his only remaining hand to pick up the teapot and pour himself a cup of tea unhurriedly, turned his head to look at Schiller and said: "If you hadn't let the ballpoint pen float at that time, I wouldn't have known that there was magic in this world that could make an arm disappear. Isn't it magical?"
Schiller's hand holding the teacup clenched instantly. He took a deep breath and said through gritted teeth: "What exactly will it take for you to change your arm back?"
"I can't change it back." Strange looked at Schiller very seriously and said: "I drove the power of the Time Stone to the extreme and then completely destroyed all timelines of this universe that belonged to this arm."
"That is to say, in all possible timelines of this universe, I only have one arm. Even if you go back to the past, it's impossible to bring it back."
"But you were once a surgeon, and the most famous genius surgeon in the world. If you only had one arm in the past, then how..."
"That's just the influence of residual timeline disturbance that hasn't disappeared." Strange drank a cup of tea and lowered his head, saying: "Soon, except for you and me, no creature in this universe will remember that I was once a surgeon. In their memory, I was born one-armed."
Schiller was completely frozen in place. He stared at Strange blankly, and after a long while, he said in disbelief.
"Do you really know what you are doing? Shi Difen! That is the reputation and achievement you exchanged for countless days and nights and countless efforts. You just don't want them like this???"
And Strange just sat quietly blowing the tea, saying nothing.
Schiller sat opposite him, leaned forward close to him, and then looked into his eyes and said.
"Think about your father and your brother. Although they are not good at words, they have always been proud of you. Your achievement is not only your own, but also the pride of the Strange family."
"You spent half your life breaking the gap between wealth, vision, and educational conditions, becoming a miracle that broke the class. Are you willing to burn these achievements to the ground, and not even leave a good reputation for hanging the pot to help the world?"
Strange's hand holding the cup paused. He didn't look at Schiller, just looked at the tea water quietly and said: "Of course I am reluctant."
Subsequently, he placed the teacup on the table, as if thinking of something, and said in a reminiscent tone.
"Everyone knows how hard I work, because they are clear that this achievement cannot be achieved by talent alone. They think I must be that kind of aloof genius, born not needing to deal with mortals too much. They think I must love learning and scientific research and can get a lot of fun from it."
"But every night I studied hard until late at night, I would think about the meaning of all this. Can these textbooks and notes that accompany me to watch the sunrise accompany me for a lifetime? And if not, then what can replace them?"
"I hate those rich people who accept elite education and have countless like-minded friends and contacts in all walks of life as soon as they graduate from college. At first, I hated the contacts that could facilitate their promotion, and later I hated the bustle of calling friends and companions."
"But since you used a ballpoint pen to hold it against my head and kicked me into the trend of the times, I also became that person who calls friends and companions, with mages, with colleagues in the Sanctum Sanctorum, and with members of the Light Alliance."
Strange drank another sip of tea and finally looked up at Schiller and said: "People call me 'Hand of God', but God didn't even spend a little time to perfunctory me, making me not feel lonely in every sunrise like that. But you did it."
Strange revealed a smile, which contained common arrogance and a trace of imperceptible malice.
"Schiller, if the reputation and status I spent half my life achieving only add a few reputations to God, then why can't I turn them into firewood and let you taste the taste of burning your ass?"
Strange picked up the teacup to cover his smile and said: "After returning to Earth, every time
"Every time you accidentally blurt out my identity as a surgeon but only harvest a bunch of surprised and confused expressions, you will recall what exactly I sacrificed to remind you of the dire consequences that sacrificing yourself might lead to."
Strange's gaze fell upon Schiller's arm, and at this very moment, Schiller began to tremble.
Finally, Schiller took a deep breath and turned his head away, avoiding Strange's gaze.
The sunset outlined a golden line on his profile, and a sigh filled with anger, emotion, and helplessness echoed across the desolate land.
"A miraculous recovery, Dr. Strange."
