Chapter 1685: Bruce Wei En and the Prisoner of the Batcave (Part 3)

~10 min read 1,912 words

The morning light spilled into the room through the gaps in the curtains. Wanda, dressed in a loose sleeping robe, paced back and forth by the window with a hint of agitation. The Scarlet Witch paced from left to right and back again, her red hair cascading over her shoulders. When the sunlight hit her, she looked like a mermaid swimming in the sea.

"I'm confused right now, do you understand? As long as I focus my attention on the Chaos Magic, I can gain the perspective of another person. I've never felt this way before; it's as if my brain has been split in two."

"Wanda, Wanda!" Jarvis, sitting on the edge of the bed in only his pajama bottoms, called out to her. Seeing that this failed to stop his girlfriend from continuing to act like a lawnmower on the carpet, he reached out a hand and gently tugged at her arm.

"Oh, darling."

Wanda placed her hand in Jarvis's, brushed her long hair back with her other hand, and said, "I'm worried to death. It's not just that this perspective makes me feel confused; it's that I swear I heard that terrifying whispering earlier. The aura was exactly the same as what we felt in that horrific universe!"

Wanda covered her eyes with her slender fingers and said, "It seems one of my followers and their friends actively summoned those terrifying beings, and they dragged Helen into it. If anything happens to her, Asgard will definitely give Professor Charles a hard time."

"Stop, Wanda. This isn't your fault. You just happened to be there when it occurred and went to investigate the situation."

"But I could have prevented the situation from worsening!" Wanda sat down beside Jarvis, but her tension and anxiety didn't ease at all. She said, "I should have paid more attention to Chthon's situation so that when he lent the Chaos Magic to others, I would have been the first to know."

"But lately... I've just been too busy." Wanda shook her head, glancing at Jarvis's profile from the gaps in her hair.

She had indeed been very busy lately. After experiencing danger together, deepening their understanding, and becoming more familiar with each other's lifestyles, the young couple, who had already confirmed their relationship, inevitably saw their feelings heat up in a short period. They were in the honeymoon phase, where it seemed they only had eyes for each other.

Wanda had always been someone who valued a stable life and believed the meaning of life lay in building a perfect, happy family. When she thought she had found love, she was willing to cast everything aside to maintain it. They hadn't spent a moment apart during this time, and she hadn't had any energy to spare for other matters, spending every day in the company of her lover.

Jarvis covered Wanda's fingers with his hand, took one of her hands onto his lap, turned to look at her, and said, "You blame yourself for this, not because your negligence caused consequences that harmed anyone. Whether it's Helen or Charles, you don't actually care about them; your anxiety doesn't stem from guilt."

Wanda looked stunned, and then anger climbed into her beautiful brows and eyes. She was about to retort sharply, but Jarvis said in that calm tone, "What truly makes you anxious is that the rhythm of the life you pursue has been disrupted. If Helen gets into trouble, you'll have to spend time explaining it to Asgard. If Professor Charles gets into trouble with the Asgardians, you'll have to find a way to protect him and argue your case."

"Your heart actually doesn't want to do any of these things. You feel these social interactions are completely unnecessary and a waste of time. If it weren't for the fact that disasters you cause might lead to you being abandoned by everyone and losing the 'happy life' defined by sociology, you could hurt anyone and still feel that apologizing is a waste of time."

Wanda was completely dumbfounded, and then her expression became flustered. She "whooshed" as she stood up from the bedside and walked to the foot of the bed, turning her back to him and hugging her arms in a defensive posture. She said, "No, Jarvis! You can't, you can't say that about me. Is it... is it..."

"Is it that objectively and rationally analyzing yourself makes you feel unable to accept it?"

"But you're not my psychiatrist!"

"I'm certainly not, but that won't stop you from seeing our good doctor sooner or later. You know that."

"But, but no one told me to see a psychiatrist. Pietro and I don't need one; we're quite healthy!"

"That's only compared to those whose untreated illnesses are much more severe. As they get better day by day, your differences will naturally become apparent. Do you think that doctor will let you off?"

Wanda stood there in silence, but her aura and her back screamed of fluster. She pursed her lips tightly and said, "I'm not a mental patient! I'm not Erik or Lorna. I can control myself!"

"No one said you couldn't, darling. It's just that certain manifestations of lacking empathy might stem from hereditary bloodlines."

"I didn't inherit anything from him!!" Wanda was practically screaming. She said, "I'm different from them. I'm a normal person; I can integrate into society!"

"Forgive me, Wanda. If my phrasing made you feel like I was diagnosing you with a mental illness, that is my mistake."

Wanda turned around abruptly, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at Jarvis. "You can't calmly examine me like them and then judge that I must be a lunatic because of my background. I thought you wouldn't do that!"

"I am not doing that." Jarvis's attitude remained calm, and his calm demeanor was quite infectious. Wanda took a few deep breaths, her hands resting on the bedposts, and said, "Then what exactly are you trying to say? Does it matter why I'm anxious?"

"If you know that you aren't actually anxious about hurting others, then you don't need to be anxious, because your life's rhythm won't be disrupted. We have better solutions than waiting for disaster to strike and then dealing with the aftermath in impatience."

Wanda looked at Jarvis's eyes in a daze. Jarvis's words made her realize that his diagnosis wasn't meant to criticize her.

"You don't think I'm heartless, cold, and like a monster?"

"I am a robot." Jarvis turned slightly, placed his hands on his knees, and looked up at Wanda's face, saying in an extremely indifferent tone, "When it comes to the degree of heartlessness, I am probably several trillion times more heartless than you."

"So..." Wanda took a deep breath, her hands dropping and unconsciously gripping the hem of her nightgown. She licked her lips, unsure whether she should speak the truth, but facing Jarvis's calm and powerful gaze, she ultimately crumbled and said.

"Fine. I know my brother and I are the same. That damn bloodline of Erik's didn't leave behind anything good. We all have a part of us that is very similar to him, and the most important thing is... we are actually very selfish."

"I don't care at all what happens to this world, and I don't care about those friends I treat kindly in daily life. If they die because of me, I feel a little guilty...

"... or maybe I don't. I've never mourned for anyone."

"My brain is filled with my visions of the future; I really can't spare any attention for others. Do you think this is very heartless?"

"That's what I said, Miss. You can't discuss the degree of your heartlessness with a robot." Jarvis placed his hand on Wanda's again and said, "To me, even the brain of the most heartless human is like a honey jar filled with complex connections."

Wanda suddenly laughed. She pulled her hand from under Jarvis's and then gripped it back, saying, "Then your creator, Tony Stark, is probably a Pacific Ocean of honey."

"That's a bit conservative, Miss. He is a Pacific Ocean of honey."

Half an hour later, Stark stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window of his office, hands on his hips, looking at Wanda and Jarvis standing hand-in-hand before him, and sighed.

"Are you here now to tell me that someone caused trouble, you didn't manage to stop it in time, and now Helen might be in danger, so you want me to help you deal with all the social fallout?"

Stark's mouth opened and closed, and finally, he said, "Not to mention whether your response to the trouble is appropriate, why do you think I can handle three extremely angry women? Oh, wait, maybe four, if you count Frigga."

"The consequences haven't occurred yet." Jarvis stepped forward and said, "Wanda can connect with a user of Chaos Magic and view the situation on her side. As of now, Helen Stark is still healthy, but the condition of her companions and the aura of the universe she is in have made Wanda feel uneasy."

"Another universe..." Stark weighed the word in his mouth and then said, "Fine. If I have to pick one of the three angry women to be on our side, I'd definitely choose Loki. After all, she might just be an angry person right now, rather than an angry woman."

"I think he knows." Wanda said, "I saw the situation on the scene through the eyes of the contractor, and he is watching from not far away."

"Then he must be dealing with Frigga right now, because Helen was supposed to return to Asgard this weekend to accompany her grandmother."

No sooner had Stark finished speaking than a portal "whooshed" open in the corner of the office. Loki, clutching a staff, rushed out in a hurry and said, "Go to Nick's! Helen went to another universe; we have to fish her back before she causes trouble."

Another fifteen minutes passed. In Nick Fury's office at S. H. I. E. L. D., Nick, Natasha, and Coulson were gathered together, sitting on a large sofa on one side. Loki sat on a single sofa opposite them, looking a bit distracted, likely communicating with Thor using divine power.

In front of the room was a huge projection screen, while Stark, Jarvis, and Wanda were tinkering with a device at the desk.

Jarvis carefully applied a patch to Wanda's forehead and comforted the somewhat nervous Wanda, saying, "It's just sharing your internal visual feed; don't worry. Although projecting images with Scarlet Magic is possible, it might tire you out."

"Thanks, but that's not what I'm nervous about." Wanda took a deep breath and said, "The situation in that universe is a bit strange, or rather, too strange. You'll know in a moment."

At this moment, there was a knock on the door. Professor X and Magneto arrived together, with Polaris Lorna and Quicksilver Pietro following behind them.

As soon as Professor X rolled his wheelchair in, he looked at Wanda with great concern and said, "Are you alright, Wanda? I heard you established a connection with someone in another universe. Erik and I were both very worried about you."

Wanda, on the other hand, appeared somewhat unnatural. She pinched the corner of her clothes and said, "I might have caused some trouble, I..."

"Although we are indeed worried about Helen, that doesn't mean we don't care about your condition, Wanda. Are you okay?"
