Chapter 1701: S: The Apocalypse Event (Part 4)
Cat Getan was free—in a physical sense, effectively, and in a way that no one could refute, or rather, refutation was ineffective.
But it was foreseeable how much chaos would be brought about by a super-large city on the east coast of the United States disappearing into thin air.
If it were any other city, the chaos would certainly happen more within the city. People outside, while busy and anxious, would be of no use. But this was Cat Getan, after all, and Gothamites were not in the least bit anxious.
Although many ordinary Cat Getan citizens who hadn't participated in the vote were somewhat surprised to find themselves flying in the sky, shoulder-to-shoulder with the sun, after the initial shock, the first thing they did was open Google Maps and then mock the slow updates of their map information.
Compared to the tragedies staged in such a dark city, the entire city flying into the sky was nothing unacceptable. Even if they were to fall and die the next second, at least they could find a second of joy in this absurd fact and in imagining others being busy and flustered because of it.
It wasn't as if the chaos would be any less when they lived on the ground. At the very least, this time a large group of people would have to follow them and get a headache over the chaos. Just for this point, Gothamites would laugh in their dreams tonight.
So, the biggest victim of Cat Getan flying into the sky wasn't the Gothamites, nor was it the federal government. Heaven knows how long those politicians had wanted this city, which had raised the national crime rate, to disappear.
Gothamites could possess the status of the coolest city in the world, the federal government wouldn't have to worry about the fact that the U. S. crime rate still had room to rise, and Cat Getan's neighbors wouldn't have to worry about lunatics rushing out of the city or being polluted by Cat Getan's outrageous climate. It could simply be called a win-win situation.
If put that way, Cat Getan's independence in a physical sense could be considered a good thing. But the biggest victim of this event was actually the Court of Owls.
And to talk about the Court of Owls in detail, one had to mention the famous "Metal" event in DC comics and its precursor—how the Batman Who Laughs and the Dark Knights of the Dark Multiverse came to the main universe.
The culprit behind this was the Court of Owls, or rather, a group of Barbatos believers called the Judas Cult who were manipulating the Court of Owls from behind the scenes.
DC comics used a very long space to pave the way for the Metal event. The background was too complex, but anyway, Batman of the main universe learned of the existence of metal for various reasons and began to investigate. But in fact, this was all a conspiracy of the Court of Owls, aimed at luring Batman into the base of the Court of Owls and then using his blood to open the door to the Dark Multiverse, to complete Barbatos' plan to invade the multiverse.
In another comic, Batman had also been lured into the Court of Owls base and trapped in a huge maze, unable to escape.
The point of this story was that the Court of Owls had spent a long time creating a huge maze under Cat Getan, which could even make Batman lose his way to a certain extent, showing the magnitude of its engineering and the magnificence of its construction achievements.
Of course, to make even Batman capsize in the gutter, it had to be hidden enough. And in fact, the way to maximize the hidden effect of an underground maze was to build it as deep as possible.
Since not only physical force but also occult factors were used to excavate this maze, the base of the Court of Owls was built very deep underground and was quite solid. After the resource investment of so many generations, this maze could simply be called unbreakable and impregnable.
This led to the fact that when the entire city of Cat Getan took off, it didn't take it along, because it was a bit too deep and too heavy, and the activation array created by the lunatics simply couldn't pull it.
But Cat Getan took the ceiling of the maze.
It was a physical taking away. The Cat Getan that took off directly lifted the skull of the huge maze that the Court of Owls had spent all their efforts on. Everything above the ceiling rose into the sky along with Cat Getan, while all the gullies and ravines underneath were left behind.
This led to the Court of Owls now facing a very awkward status quo: the vast majority of the members of the Court of Owls, that is, those old nobles of Cat Getan, were active in the city when Cat Getan took off.
And those of the Council of Owls, that is, the Judas Cult and a portion of the Owl priests, were all left in the maze underground.
When the news of Cat Getan's disappearance spread throughout the world, even if the federal government and the FBI privately wished they could set off firecrackers to celebrate the other party's departure, they still had to do the face-saving project.
Faced with such a major event as a city suddenly disappearing, of course, the FBI, the Guard, the Navy, the Army, and the Air Force all went into action, and before long, they surrounded the original land of Cat Getan.
If at this time, an open-air underground maze suddenly appeared in a place where there should have been nothing, and inside there was a group of sneaky, thief-eyed people who looked like they were up to no good, and who were immersed in their own shock and couldn't even move, then who else could the federal government blame?
Anyway, they were just trying to give the public an explanation to calm the public panic. Since the people underneath looked so much like a cult, then even if they weren't a cult, they were a cult. Catching them to block the reporters' guns was definitely not wrong.
And because the Owls underground were completely immersed in the shock of the huge city above their heads vanishing, their reaction to the federal government's arrest was too slow. Plus, the number of people the federal government sent this time was indeed enough, with military equipment ready, the dozen or so Talons left underground couldn't make any waves.
After a struggle, they still caught dozens alive, and the others either died or ran away.
After all, the term "open-air underground maze" sounded absurd. Now, if you want to figure out the situation in Cat Getan, you don't even need a plane. Standing on the ground where the road signs at the entrance of Cat Getan City are intact, you can see the structure of the entire maze clearly. It's a bit like those transparent rulers with mazes and metal steel balls inside. Even a fool can walk through it by exhaustion.
By then, when Batman comes and sees it, ho, a fully transparent maze, you use this to test a genius?
So some of the remaining Judas Cult members who had some skills knew that the situation was irreversible, and could only flee and hide first to prevent being really arrested by the federal government and falling into the hands of that stupid woman Amanda.
But the members of the Court of Owls who stayed in the city were not lucky either.
They of course recognized that the dark power that sent Cat Getan into the sky and now maintained the normal operation of the city came from the metal they had buried for generations. But there was a problem: the wires and electricity had gone to the sky, but the master control room and batteries were left on the ground. So what to do when the power runs out?
The lunatics of Cat Getan were on a whim, relying on their genius wisdom and sufficient courage to send a giant city into the sky. They wouldn't consider how long this energy could be used and what to do if it fell down without energy, or rather, they didn't care at all whether it would fall down. Isn't it cool to die in this way?
But the members of the Court of Owls were different from them. As mentioned before, the members of the Court of Owls were mostly rich or expensive in Cat Getan. Some were extremely successful businessmen, and some were celebrities who had been deeply involved in Cat Getan for many years. Their property, power, family, and themselves were all in this city.
If Cat Getan just fell down like this, everything they possessed and their own lives would be wiped out. It would be strange if they weren't afraid.
People who have nothing don't fear death and will find some fun for themselves in the cracks of life and death, but the more they have, the more they have concerns. To take a step back, now that the Dark God's plan couldn't succeed, wouldn't the immortality and power promised to them by the Judas Cult be gone?
Except for the Judas Cult, the vast majority of Owls had no piety to the Dark God. The birth of the Court of Owls was only because the believers of Barbatos promised many benefits to this group of celebrities. What could be more tempting than ruling a city for a long, long time and making one's family forever noble?
But they also knew very well that to make money, one must have a life to spend it. If Cat Getan fell down now, everything they built in this city would be smashed to pieces, all their existing descendants would die, and the family would disappear forever. They didn't want Cat Getan to fall down even more than that group of lunatics.
Thus, an absurd but unusually reasonable situation occurred—the members of the Court of Owls approached this group of lunatics, demanding immediate maintenance of the facilities that maintained their ascent, and at the same time looking for more power to ensure that Cat Getan wouldn't fall down.
Their worry was not unreasonable. Although the lunatics of Cat Getan were all evil geniuses, the time was too short, and they couldn't be compared in quantity with all the genius scientists on Earth in the Marvel universe. The way they adopted to make Cat Getan ascend was not so exquisite, it was completely brute force.
In short, the principle was similar to the small device produced by Red Hood. A core pulse machine was manufactured using a portion of the energy from the Wizard Felix, and then the dark power in the Cat Getan metal was continuously excited through pulses.
This method wasn't unusable, it was just that the efficiency of using the dark energy in the metal was too low. It was like a toy remote-controlled car that needed a whole industrial battery to run. More than eighty percent of the energy was wasted in the process of excitation.
When the Court of Owls saw this, Cat Getan crashing down was just a matter of time if they continued to waste like this. Even if it escaped Earth's gravity, the cosmic environment would be enough to take their lives once the protective shield disappeared.
They initially wanted to contact the surface to provide sufficient energy so that the ascending Cat Getan could fly steadily and then land steadily. But obviously, the Owl priests in the master control room of the underground maze had long since died, been injured, or fled. No one could respond to their request.
Thus, the members of the Court of Owls had to start working overtime to study how to maximize the use of this dark energy so that Cat Getan could land steadily before the energy bottomed out.
Finally, because the members of the Court of Owls, who had exhausted all their energy and were full of fatigue due to working without sleep or rest, were not greeted by a savior in their office, but by a smiling face with green hair, a pale face, and a bloody mouth. ===== CHAPTER 1702 =====
