Chapter 1783: Summer in Fool

~12 min read 2,339 words

Selina stood in a sailboat cabin not far from Cat Getan Beach. Maggie was lowering her head to count the money and check the harvest of the day. All the small accessories they made the day before were sold out. After deducting costs, they still made a net profit of more than twenty dollars.

Just as Selina was pouring ice soda into her mouth, Maggie stuffed a roll of dollars into Selina's hand. Selina was about to say something, but Maggie said: "Don't say those words that make me jealous to the point of wanting to push you into the sea. I know this doesn't count as anything, but if you want to refuse Bruce hanging a pile of things on you with justification, you always need some confidence."

Selina immediately leaned to Maggie's side, kissed Maggie hard, and said with a smile: "Alright, I know you don't like me being a thief, and I haven't done that for a long time. Earning money by labor, right?"

Maggie pushed her away with a bit of disgust and said: "This is to prevent him from saying to you 'you can only be a thief if you leave me' when you two quarrel one day."

"Don't worry, if he dares to say that to me, I will scratch his face." Although Selina said so, she still sighed.

After parting with Maggie, Selina caught a ride from the owner of the sailboat cabin, but Selina was going to Wei En Manor, and the owner wasn't completely on the way, so Selina let the owner stop at an intersection at the junction of the South District and the East District, and she walked to Wei En Manor.

On the way to Wei En Manor, Selina suddenly found that a large retail supermarket had opened next to a middle-class community on the edge of the South District. It looked like a chain brand, with a huge floor-to-ceiling window, and various goods were displayed behind it.

Selina wasn't very interested in shopping at the supermarket. Two very large trees were planted in front of the mall. The shade there could help Selina avoid the scorching sun when walking this section of the road. She walked toward that side without thinking.

The side of the shade happened to be the floor-to-ceiling window. Selina had nothing to do while walking, so she looked inside. Suddenly, her footsteps stopped, because she saw a familiar product on the retail shelf closest to the window in this supermarket.

"God, is that Poor Man's Cookies?" Selina covered her forehead with her hand, leaned on the window and looked inside, exclaiming: "This thing is still selling? It has risen to 39 cents?! I remember it was only 5 cents a small bag when I was a kid."

Selina licked her lips, seemingly recalling the taste in her memory. She hesitated for a moment, looked at the reward Maggie stuffed into her hand, which happened to have a few small changes, and finally walked into the supermarket door.

Two minutes later, Selina walked out holding two bags of cookies with satisfaction. She sat down by the flower bed in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, placed a bag of cookies on the side of her leg, and picked up the other bag to examine it.

"It turns out that five bags are combined into one, but that is much more expensive. My old friend, I'm afraid no one dares to call you Poor Man's Cookies now. After all, Wei En chocolate cookies are only one dollar a bag."

Selina muttered while using her hand to tear the packaging bag, but she fumbled for a long time before realizing that this family packaging had no convenient opening at all, and it was difficult to open without scissors.

Selina groped around and found that she didn't carry any weapons, not even a slightly sharp key. She sighed and stood up holding the other bag of cookies, thinking she could only think of a way when she returned to Wei En Manor.

Soon Alfred pushed open the manor's gate and smiled at Selina who walked in: "Miss Aisha went to Rodriguez Manor for class and will probably be back in half an hour. You can have afternoon tea first, I will go prepare it now."

"No, no need, Alfie." Selina stopped Alfred, shook the cookies in her hand and said: "I have this, can you give me a pair of scissors?"

Selina soon dug out a small bag of cookies from the sturdy family packaging. Inside a small bag were two cookies that weren't thick, made of flour, sugar, and chocolate chips, with a layer of butter brushed on the surface, and they were earthy yellow after being baked dry.

Selina had just sent a cookie into her mouth when she seemed to think of something and said: "By the way, Alfred, I want to go to Bruce's study. There shouldn't be anything important there now, right?"

"No, you are welcome to use it. Do you need me to bring the tea tray over for you?"

"Thank you, but no need, I'm not thirsty now."

After saying this, Selina walked upstairs with the cookie in her mouth, then opened the study door and walked in. Alfred stood by the tea table, scanning the ingredient list like a thesis on the cookie packaging Selina left on the table with eagle-like sharp eyes.

At dinner, Selina and Bruce were both told that Aisha was staying overnight at Rodriguez Manor, so they didn't go to the big restaurant to eat, but sat opposite each other at the kitchen island to eat the light meal Alfred made.

The main course was sandwiches with cold black pork ham slices and pea puree, Belgian cream mussels, and oil-soaked tuna tartare. Selina took a big bite of the sandwich, and while chewing, she found that under the dim light, Bruce looked at her with an inexplicable hesitation.

Selina gave Bruce a confused look, but Bruce still hesitated and finished a tartare before opening his mouth: "Did you go to the study today?"

"Yes, Alfred said there wasn't anything important there, so I went to find a book to read. Of course, I didn't look carefully, just flipped through it."

"Did you eat anything in there?"

Selina stiffened immediately. She tried hard to swallow the food in her mouth, turned her eyes to the other side and said: "Probably... no, or... a little bit?"

"Is it yes or no?" Bruce asked helplessly.

"Alright, I ate a cookie. It's not a food with a strong smell, and I made sure to wrap it with a paper towel. It absolutely didn't pollute your books."

Bruce took out a small transparent bag from his pocket, just like the rectangular small bag often used in chemical laboratories to hold a small piece of solid raw material. Inside it lay a cookie crumb half the size of a fingernail.

"God, when did it fall off?!" Selina said in disbelief: "I looked down at the ground twenty times for every bite I took, how could it still drop crumbs?"

"I found it in the gap of the sofa by the bed. Maybe it fell on your clothes when you were reading, and it slipped into the gap when you stood up."

"Come on, Bruce, you must have had afternoon tea in there, right? This kind of food will drop crumbs, and I'm not a cookie detective."

Selina looked at Bruce with wide eyes, trying to muddle through. Finding that Bruce's expression didn't change at all, she had to groan frustratedly and said.

"Alright, I thought I could eat in there, so I brought the unfinished cookies in. I promise I won't do it next time. I don't mean cookies won't drop crumbs, but I won't drop them on the sofa in your study again, I promise!"

Looking at Selina who was making a cross on her chest and swearing, Bruce placed the small bag flat on the table, then put his hands on the table, looked at Selina and said: "You can eat in the study. I used to have afternoon tea there. The reason why cookies drop crumbs is very complicated, but I don't care."

"However, Selina, I analyzed the pore structure in the cookie flour and the source of the cocoa powder in this half chocolate bean, and found that this is a product produced by a cheap food company from Metropolis, selling for 39 cents for a family pack of GNE chocolate butter cookies..."

Selina opened her eyes wide in shock. She heard the dissatisfaction in Bruce's words, so she put down the food in her hand, jumped off the bar stool, spread her hands and looked at Bruce: "God! Listen to what you said, cheap food production company, food is just food, you wouldn't want to stop me from eating the cheap food in your mouth, right?!"

"Come on, Bruce, I'm not a rich lady like you who grew up eating organic food. You can't ask me not to eat food produced on industrial assembly lines at all, just because you see it as cheap food. This is even more outrageous than your insistence on putting those terrible dresses on me!"

"Listen, Selina, this has nothing to do with its price, I absolutely am not..."

"You absolutely are not discriminating against my background." Selina stood opposite the island and looked at Bruce with her hands on her hips: "Then you want to say, I have better choices now, I don't need to eat these cheap foods at all. You provide these to me because you love me, so I don't need to mind, and don't be ashamed of living a better life, you completely forgive my little habits..."

"Alright, you listen to me too, Bruce. I am very sorry for getting cookie crumbs on your sofa. I will try not to eat anywhere other than the dining table next time, but I will eat what I want to eat, whether it is cheap or not. You can't manipulate me in this regard."

Bruce's expression appeared a bit helpless. Selina looked into his eyes, took two steps back, shook her head, and turned to walk toward the door.

Selina left Wei En Manor all the way. With her skills, she didn't need to worry about the public security in Cat Getan at night, so she climbed onto the roof of a building very simply, intending to go around Cat Getan as before to vent the frustration in her heart.

But just as she climbed onto the roof, a black shadow appeared behind her. A female voice with a slightly hoarse tone came from the wind: "Look, a little angry kitten, did you quarrel with your feeder?"

Selina turned her head abruptly and saw a black-haired woman in a dark trench coat standing behind her. Instantly, Selina recalled that she seemed to have seen this face in the newspaper.

"Talia al Ghul?"

"It's me." Talia smiled, and she didn't know when she had already stood behind Selina, then said: "Are you angry because I accused your richest boyfriend?"

Selina took a deep breath. Instantly, she moved, as flexible as a cat, dodging to the side. A pitch-black whip rolled toward Talia like a flexible snake tail.

"Are you angry out of shame because I hit the nail on the head?" Talia dodged nimbly, throwing three hidden weapons. They didn't force Selina back at all. While observing the trajectory of the whip, she said: "It seems you are going to stand on Bruce's side. But then again, how many women can refuse the title of the world's richest man's wife?"

With a "snap," the force of the whip was heavier. Talia saw the full anger and murderous intent on Selina's face, but didn't notice the hand hidden behind her back that was bent like an eagle's claw.

"Screech!"

It was late at night. Bruce, who was still standing in front of the kitchen island, looked at Selina who pushed the door and walked in, his gaze falling on the blood still stained on her fingers.

Selina's eyes flashed with light in the darkness. She stared straight at Bruce and said: "I apologize for my words before. Cheap food is not the most excessive description. Before, we called that kind of cookie 'Poor Man's Cookies'."

"I didn't mean..."

"Shut up, listen to me. Do you know why I bought it?"

Bruce looked at Selina in silence. He knew Selina didn't need him to answer. Selina threw the whip in her hand onto the sofa on the side and said: "When I was still following Lucky Mama and stealing things for her, she would go to places we didn't know every week to purchase, buying a large bag of 5-cent small bags of loose Poor Man's Cookies, and put them on the very top of the wardrobe."

"Only the children who performed best could get a small bag, and I had an extra bag every week because she liked me very much."

"Unlike you rich people who grew up drinking black tea and having afternoon tea in the manor, that was the only kind of sweet food I could eat when I was a child, so I went to buy it."

Bruce's expression became soft, but before a second passed, he heard Selina roar: "This is what you want to hear, right! Poor people either have to have some tragic past or have no choice or have short-sightedness to choose something! You damn rich people!"

"I tell you, Bruce Wei En, I would rather eat 39-cent Poor Man's Cookies than eat the organic cake you provide me, just because cheap cookies are sweet enough! I just love eating high-sugar, high-calorie junk food!!!"

"And I don't want to dress like a Christmas tree at the wedding, not because the clothes are expensive or have a background, but because I feel I can't bear it, but because it's damn uncomfortable!!!" ===== CHAPTER 1784 =====
