Chapter 1789

~10 min read 1,984 words

Blinding incandescent lights turned on one after another, and the extremely regular sound of footsteps echoed in the cold metal corridor. A middle-aged blonde woman in a suit had her position as "Experimental Zone Supervisor" marked on the name tag on her chest.

She entered the elevator with a heavy face and asked the subordinate behind her, "Why did Experimental Subject B1263 escape from prison? I must give the higher-ups an explanation!"

"Sorry, Supervisor, our agents are still investigating. It is preliminarily suspected that the use of a low-security level sleep pod led to incomplete sleep..."

"Don't let me remind you again!" The female supervisor gritted her teeth and said viciously, "We must ensure that this kind of thing doesn't enter the public eye, otherwise everyone's career here will be finished!"

Just as they got out of the elevator, a younger female secretary walked over. She handed a report to the female supervisor and followed behind her, walking quickly while saying, "The Director is coming to inspect. He instructed us to make preparations in advance and pack everything into boxes."

"When is he coming?" The supervisor asked without looking back.

"Now."

"Ah!!!!!"

A scream came from underground. The security personnel behind rushed toward the stairwell in a swarm, while the supervisor stopped her steps. In her dark pupils, the pattern of the hub gradually appeared.

The wheels stopped turning, bringing up tiny dust. The black S. H. I. E. L. D. office vehicle stopped in front of the base. Schiller and Nick got off from both sides of the car respectively.

Security personnel got off another car and followed behind them. Nick pushed his sunglasses and said, "Some high-risk experimental products are stored here, I hope they haven't made this matter too messy."

"High-risk experimental products? You didn't release them to fight with the heroes?"

"This can't be released." Nick took his sunglasses down a little, looked at Schiller from above, and said, "High-risk means that even for Captain America, this thing is very dangerous."

They walked quickly past the gate. Nick explained while walking with big strides.

"We have to let superheroes have work so that we can get logistics funds, but we can't really let them suffer any serious harm, or endanger their spirit. So their opponents must be carefully selected."

"Of course, it can't be too easy. The military and Congress aren't stupid. They can still tell whether a battle is tragic or not. But the difficulty can't be too high either. It's fine to suffer some physical injuries, but it wouldn't be good if it hits their confidence."

"All superheroes, including members of the Avengers, actually have their advantages and weaknesses. Some monsters created are too targeted at their weaknesses. If the timing is appropriate, it may cause serious harm to them. This will also be listed as a failed product and then destroyed."

"We label successful experimental products according to the different strengths of superheroes, and in their spare time, they enter their field of vision in a reasonable way, which not only provides financial security for S. H. I. E. L. D. but also tempers their martial arts so that they don't lose their vigilance."

"Failed experimental products don't have any grading, but all experimental products that aren't immediately destroyed have their own troubles. At least for superheroes, they will be a threat. And when they are stored in the warehouse in a crowded posture, the danger is greatly increased."

"That's why I need you to help me solve this trouble. You know, if it weren't very urgent, I wouldn't be willing to tolerate your lion's share."

Just as they entered the elevator, Nick heard a subtle sizzling sound. With a "pop," the lights in the elevator went out.

Schiller looked up abruptly at the top of the elevator. A black shadow flashed by, and thick gray mist wrapped around the elevator, letting the elevator not fall immediately when the power was cut off and the protection device wasn't working, but slowly stopped on the fourth underground floor.

"Something ran out." Nick tentatively stepped out of the elevator, looked left and right in the pitch-black corridor, and said, "I hope it's not that group of things with the number starting with B."

"What's special about that?" Schiller also walked out of the elevator and asked.

"Experimental products starting with B are very special. Most of them don't have a physical body, but they can affect humans in a special way. Simply put, they are ghosts."

Schiller opened his eyes slightly. Nick looked at him in the darkness and said, "Don't make such a fuss. People have souls, why can't there be ghosts?"

"And Tony has done in-depth research on this, and then he discovered that from the perspective of science, ghosts are a kind of electric wave, and human souls are too."

"Usually we manufacture a powerful electromagnetic field to grind failed ghost experimental products into pieces, but some wavelengths are special, so we temporarily trap them and then borrow the sun's great power to destroy them."

"In other words, it's very likely that a malicious ghost ran out?"

"It depends on who you're talking about." Although Nick didn't look nervous, he still took out a gun from behind and said, "This thing is a special attack for superheroes who are only good at physical combat, and for those who are timid, but for you... are you afraid of ghosts?"

Schiller turned and walked toward the end of the corridor and said, "The only ghost I'm afraid of in this world is a poor ghost."

"You can just say you're afraid of me."

Nick followed Schiller slowly toward the end of the corridor. Just after turning a corner, Schiller saw the female supervisor and security personnel who had fainted on the ground.

Schiller walked over to check their breathing and found that they were still alive. He turned to look at Nick and said, "Don't ghosts kill people?"

"Need to match the wavelength." Nick explained roughly and said, "Simply put, the more afraid you are, the more similar your brain waves will be to the ghost's wavelength, and the easier it will be for the ghost to control human brain waves."

"But if you don't believe or fear at all, unless the ghost is strong enough to have the ability to collapse the ceiling and smash people to death, it can't kill people."

Nick looked down at his subordinates and said, "People who work here know the background of these monsters, but they are just experimental products. They aren't very afraid, so they aren't easily controlled, so they just fainted."

Schiller understood, stood up again, and said, "But ghosts can kill people by controlling them, right?"

Nick nodded and said, "So don't make friends with people who are timid but seek death, and if you don't believe, then firmly don't believe, then you will be immune to all ghosts."

Suddenly, Schiller looked back at the end of the dark corridor, where a small black shadow appeared, like a little boy holding something.

Nick looked back and said, "Is there anything there? I'm not afraid of this thing at all, so I can't see clearly."

"There's a little boy." Schiller frowned and said, "You even catch such a small child? It's simply a moral corruption."

"Come on, they are ghosts. If S. H. I. E. L. D. hadn't caught them back to charge them, they would have dissipated long ago."

"How do you imprison them?"

"Magic energy, or electric waves of specific wavelengths."

Schiller instantly scattered into a cloud of gray mist. The child ghost saw the situation wasn't good and ran away, but was finally caught by Schiller.

Nick took off his sunglasses and said, "Ghosts and souls are two completely different things. Although most ghosts are produced because souls stay for some reason, you can understand that they deteriorate the moment they become ghosts, so hell doesn't want this thing."

"Usually, ghosts dissipate after they run out of energy, and then go to the death realm, but we caught them back and fully charged them, or even overcharged them, and some will undergo further mutation, becoming more powerful, and some can even affect the real world."

Schiller looked at the ghost trapped between the energy shield created by the gray mist. It was a little boy with blood flowing from his eyes, holding a man's head in his hands. The whole body was semi-transparent, not very bloody, but a bit weird.

Nick continued to explain, "Some humans have abnormal brain waves when they die, which causes their souls to become ghosts, and there are many factors that make brain waves abnormal, such as intense emotions, the Earth's magnetic field, the influence of surrounding brain waves, etc. Anyway, that's how Tony explained it."

"So how do I take these things across the universe?" Schiller asked a very practical question, saying, "It's impossible to tie them with a rope and take them through the portal one by one, right?"

"Of course not, follow me, there are canned bottles specially for storing them underground." Nick led the way underground, and Schiller followed him with the little boy ghost caught by the gray mist.

Soon they arrived at the lowest level. Schiller saw thousands of cylindrical canned bottles in this huge underground space called the experimental product storage warehouse, storing all kinds of monsters. Clearly, although Nick's purpose was to cheat funds, even if it was just to decorate the facade, he was serious.

"You can use that mysterious mist to store everything here, as long as you don't change the properties and structure, it's fine. Then you go through the portal and throw everything into that universe, and it's fine."

"Are you sure zombies will eat these things?" Schiller looked up at the monsters floating in one canned bottle after another on the high shelf.

"Otherwise, let them eat the zombies." Nick turned around, then walked backward, looking at Schiller and saying, "We just put another group of monsters into a world full of monsters, and neither side is worthy of sympathy."

"No, at least there is one more." Schiller looked at Nick and said.

Nick paused, saw Schiller's expression, scratched his head, and said, "Is it your mysterious prophetic ability again?"

"Haven't you looked at the specific situation of those two worlds?"

"Only looked at a little bit, but it's too much like a blood-plasma film on the midnight channel. Honestly, if you've seen how they eat, you won't have any interest in them."

"You don't want to save anyone there?"

"What's the point of saving them?" Nick shook his head and said, "It's indeed regrettable to be infected by the zombie virus, but there are too many tragedies in the multiverse, we can't save everyone."

"Although I know you hope to create more possibilities for other universes, we should save those who are easy to save first. After gathering more power, we can go and deal with these difficult ones, which can also save some effort."

"Then what about your little lamb?"

"I'm very sure that Spider-Man in this universe also became a zombie." Nick shook his head, sighed, and said, "I just saw him eat his aunt and girlfriend and didn't want to watch anymore. This isn't his fault, but even if I save him and let him regain his sanity, he will collapse completely because of this matter."

"Instead of letting him face the truth and feel self-blame and pain, it's better to let him stay crazy." Nick pursed his lips and said, "There is no responsibility that Spider-Man must bear, but he always thinks so."

"You rarely said a few human words." Schiller shook his head and said, "But recently I understood a truth: Spider-Man is much stronger than you imagine. Facing the dark truth won't crush them, it will only make them stronger."

"Are you going to save him?"

"He will save himself, and save the world, once again."
