Chapter 1833: Journey of a Madman (Part 46)
In the bright and spacious Stark Industries office, a burly figure in a suit stood in front of the window. The door was knocked. The bald man who turned around had gray-white whiskers and squinted slightly against the light.
Walking in was a black woman wearing a capable security uniform. After she walked in, she nodded slightly to the bald man. It was visible to the naked eye that the bald man relaxed.
"Mr. Obadiah, the things we promised you have been done. What about your reward?" the black woman said.
"Don't be anxious, I must hear the news of Tony's death before I pay." Obadiah raised his chin, his furrowed face sinking into the shadows, like the mysterious and dark far side of the moon.
"He is dead for sure," the black woman raised the communicator in her hand and said. "The Ten Rings aren't vegetarians. They prepared a large amount of explosives and ambushed them on the road Tony Stark must pass. The car drives up, and then 'BOOM'..."
The black woman raised her hand and made an explosion gesture, but didn't see the dim light that flashed across Obadiah's eyes.
Suddenly, the office door was knocked again. The black woman turned back sharply and narrowed her eyes vigilantly. Obadiah stretched out a hand to signal her not to be impatient and lowered his voice: "It might be Pepper notifying me to attend the board meeting."
"It's more likely that they are here to announce the news of his death to you," the black woman raised one corner of her mouth, revealing a smug smile.
But at this time, the person who appeared outside the door was not a secretary in a suit, but a security guard in a security uniform. Obadiah hummed with some dissatisfaction: "What's the matter? Is there anything that can't be done by phone?"
"Sorry, Mr. Obadiah, the secure communication satellite phone you designated received a call from a strange number. We are not sure if we can use ordinary electronic communication methods to notify you. Do you want to go to the security department yourself?"
Obadiah frowned deeply. Ignoring the security guard's expression, the black woman walked up and slammed the door shut, turned around, and stared at Obadiah: "It might be Tony Stark's distress call. You can't answer it."
Obadiah showed a hesitant expression. The black woman walked up and said: "You have already taken this step, sir. There is no turning back. If Tony Stark survives, he won't let you go."
"He doesn't know..."
"He will always know."
Obadiah took a deep breath, relaxed his shoulders slightly, and seemed to have made a decision in his heart. He let the black woman open the door, looked at the security guard, and said: "Where did the communication signal come from?"
"Within the United States, sir."
Obadiah relaxed completely. He looked at the black woman and said: "It might be an equipment manufacturer I secretly contacted before. You know, some equipment needs to be brought in through the Mexican port."
After speaking, he tidied up his suit and tie and walked out of the door quickly, taking the elevator to the security department.
The satellite phone was being put on hold. The moment Obadiah picked up the phone, he heard a low voice coming from the other side.
"He knows."
"Beep—beep—beep—"
The phone was hung up.
The veins on Obadiah's hand holding the receiver bulged. He turned to look at the black woman who had followed him and stared at her with a fierce gaze: "Tony Stark isn't dead! Someone said he knows!"
"Who said it?!" The black woman rushed over and glanced at the phone number. Unfortunately, anyone with a discerning eye could see that it was a virtual number that had been masked, and it was very difficult to trace the source.
Obadiah pursed his lips tightly, and the flesh on his cheeks hung down, making him look even more gloomy. He took a deep breath, and his bulging chest almost burst his suit.
Without staying too long, Obadiah pushed the black woman away and walked out, and looked back at her: "Compared to me, Tony will not let go of the murderer who directly attacked him. If he is allowed to come back alive, none of you will be able to run!"
Watching Obadiah's disappearing back, the black woman couldn't pretend to be calm anymore. Her fingertips began to tremble. She took a deep breath, picked up her phone, and while speaking local dialects that Americans couldn't understand, she walked out of the building quickly.
In the office on the other side, Pepper threw her hair back, put the phone to her ear, and heard the familiar voice of Stark coming from the opposite side. She said with some doubt: "Tony, what's the matter? Is the inspection in Afghanistan not going well?"
The voice on the opposite side sounded a bit noisy, but Stark's voice still came through clearly: "Nothing, the inspection is going quite well. I just... I just suddenly wanted to hear your voice. You go ahead and be busy."
"What's the matter? Tony?" Pepper's tone became a bit anxious. She said: "It's so noisy over there. What on earth are you doing? My God! Are you shivering? What on earth is wrong with you? Tony! Tell me quickly!"
Pepper heard Tony on the other side take a deep breath and use the tone of feigned calmness that Pepper had heard countless times: "We just experienced an attack... God, God, Pepper, don't get excited, listen to me, listen to me!"
"It was very dangerous at the time. Our car flipped, and many people threw bombs to bomb us, but fortunately, we met a mercenary. His name is Erik, and he saved me."
"I am now sitting in a car we found locally and am rushing to the town. It was a bit scary just now, but I definitely wasn't afraid. I just called you because... forget it, nothing's wrong, I'll hang up first."
Ignoring Pepper's anxious shouting, Stark hung up the phone. He took a deep breath, clenched his phone, and closed his eyes. And Erik, who was driving, turned his head and looked at him with some worry: "Are you okay? Tony, is she your girlfriend?"
"No, not yet." Stark appeared a bit flustered. He reached out and rubbed under his nose, then sniffed and said: "Not yet."
Erik laughed brightly. He said: "It seems it will be soon. People always instinctively think of important people when they are dying. It seems that the moment the missile flew toward you, she stayed in your mind for at least a second."
"Nothing of the sort." Stark continued to deny. He rested his elbow on the open car window, turned his head to look out the window with feigned ease, and changed the subject stiffly: "You said you are a mercenary here, then which country are you from?"
Stark tilted his head, not seeing the dim light that flashed in Erik's eyes. Erik took his hand off the steering wheel and put it back down, saying: "Wakanda, I am from Wakanda."
Stark took his sunglasses down a bit and looked at Erik from above the glasses, with undisguised surprise in his eyes. Erik shrugged helplessly and said: "What? Do I not look like it?"
"No offense, but I thought you would be, uh, a bit more high-tech."
"This is a common misunderstanding people have about Wakanda," Erik smiled and said. "In fact, high technology is only in the hands of royal family members. Although ordinary people are quite wealthy, they don't possess lethal force."
After listening, Stark was silent for a while and said: "Do you know? Erik, this journey has given me a great shock. I didn't expect that the weapons I developed according to Obadiah's words would actually be used in this kind of place. This is completely meaningless!"
Stark's tone revealed disappointment. Looking at the curiosity in Erik's eyes, he explained: "Obadiah is my uncle. He is the person who has been best to me since my father died. He hoped that I would research many weapons and sell them to the military or other people. I don't know how many people I have indirectly killed like this. I just feel that I can't go on like this anymore."
Erik didn't say anything, just reached out and patted Stark on the shoulder. But suddenly, the hand he pressed on the steering wheel exerted force, and a sharp turn caused Stark's forehead to hit the side of the car window.
"God! What's the matter?"
"Boom, boom, boom!"
"Damn it! They are here again!!!" Erik roared while controlling the car to dodge the missile attack: "The firepower is even fiercer than before! Who on earth are these people?! Why have I never seen them here before?!"
"They are here for me!" Stark tried hard to grasp the handle beside the car and roared in the sound of artillery fire: "Stark Industries has many enemies. They all want to kill me!"
"Bang! Bang, bang!"
In order to dodge the artillery bombardment that was close at hand, Erik had to turn the wheel desperately. The car's tires pressed on a protruding small dirt slope, and the high-speed turn made the car's center of gravity even more unstable. With a "clatter," the off-road vehicle flipped directly, and both people in the car were hit and bleeding from their heads.
Erik, lying on the steering wheel and breathing painfully, reached out and touched the gun beside him. But the next second, a thicker gun muzzle was pressed against his head. Erik could only slowly loosen that hand and raise both hands above his head.
The car was pushed upright. Erik and Stark were dragged out of the car together. Stark just wanted to say something when he was put on a black hood.
Erik lowered his eyes, obviously caught in a struggle.
Rescuing the world's richest man in a sudden attack with not very fierce firepower was one thing, but being kidnapped to another unknown location with him was another thing.
Erik knew very well that the firepower of the first attack was enough to kill a wealthy man who had no power to truss a chicken, but for mercenaries like them who had been mixing here for years, it was nothing. But once Stark was rescued, he had a chance to go to the Lighthouse Country and fly high like a bird. Low investment, high return.
But now the situation was stronger than people. The opposite side had already subdued both of them. If he and Stark were taken away together, Stark was the world's richest man, and the other side could ask for a ransom for kidnapping him. He was just a mercenary, and the other side would only think he was this wealthy man's bodyguard, without any utilization value at all. Being killed became inevitable.
Erik's hesitation made him miss the best opportunity to speak. He was also put on a hood and stuffed into the car.
From the actions of this group of people, Erik discovered that they were probably not ordinary terrorists, because the car kept circling in a certain area, and even he, who was experienced, couldn't determine where the car finally stopped.
Erik finally made up his mind. The moment the car door opened, the miniature thermal dagger that looked like an ornament hanging on his wrist popped out, instantly cutting the rope binding his hands. Erik swung hard, and the blade of the dagger grazed the throat of the terrorist who opened the car door.
The moment it touched the skin, the laser energy surged, cutting the opponent's head off as smoothly as cutting softened butter. And the other terrorists were shocked and stunned for a few seconds by this scene.
Erik kicked down the driver who had just gotten out of the car and drove away. The bullets behind him only raised a cloud of dust behind the car body and failed to stop his departure.
Stark, who had already been dragged off the car, seemed to feel what had happened. His hands tied behind his back clenched, and despair drowned his heart.
He was dragged stumbling forward by someone. He walked for about ten minutes before he felt the light in front of him turn from bright to dark. The next second, he was pushed by a pair of big hands and fell straight to the ground.
He heard English with a heavy accent ring in his ears, the gist of which was that he heard Tony Stark was a scientist who invented many powerful weapons, and he must continue to research weapons for them here, otherwise he would be dead.
After some rustling sounds, the group of people left. Stark found that the rope binding his hands was loose. He struggled to open the restraints, wanting to tear off the hood on his neck.
Suddenly, he felt a pair of hands press on his neck. Stark struggled desperately, but didn't feel the other party exerting force. Soon he heard a gentle voice:
"Don't move, I'll help you untie it." ===== CHAPTER 1834 =====
