Chapter 2051: A Knight

~11 min read 2,130 words

"I guess I won't be the first person to see through your way of acting. Where did the others go?"

"They are all living well, Jason. You know I don't have to be an enemy of the world at all. So what if you saw it?"

Jason sighed and said, "See, you know no one can make you pay a price. I hate this smug tone, but I know I can't either."

"You are still worried that Batman will make a mistake, not seeing through me completely, and then being deceived by me, so you chose to come here to contain me. Why do you think I'm interested in you?"

"Because you look like that kind of person." Jason made a complex expression and said, "Are you completely uninterested in psychological trauma under certain extreme conditions?"

"So you admit you have psychological trauma?"

Jason took a deep breath, as if trying to swallow his anger. He said in a low tone, "We are not discussing this. Don't beat around the bush with me. I'm saying I won't stay here and do nothing."

Jason was just about to continue speaking when his gaze fell on the stack of paper beside Schiller. He hesitated for a moment and said, "Can I read that?"

Schiller raised an eyebrow. Jason stared at the paper with writing on it and said, "I don't necessarily have to know what you are busy with, but I think I can get some entertainment from reading the text."

And to Jason's great surprise, Schiller pushed that stack of paper over. Jason couldn't believe things would be so simple. He thought it would take at least 200 more rounds before he could find a clue.

"Are you disappointed that your detective skills have nowhere to be displayed?" Schiller laughed and said, "There's really nothing mysterious about me. You can flip through my materials, but these academic materials are probably quite boring."

"Or you can be more patient and wait until night. There will be an answer that satisfies you."

Schiller stood up and left the dining table, while Jason buried his head in that stack of materials, not even noticing he had left.

And to Jason's disappointment, this was a fairly pure medical document, filled with a large number of terms he couldn't understand, and he could only tell that this was an analysis of certain neurological epileptic symptoms of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

The last page of the document had a hand-drawn lymphatic structure diagram. It could be seen that the drawing time was very short, so it was a bit sloppy, but even if Jason wasn't very good at anatomy, he could tell it should be fairly accurate.

Just as Schiller said, reading this kind of purely academic material couldn't even be called boring, but torture. Even Jason, who was very willing and good at reading, couldn't read on after one page.

And the information he could get from this document was that Schiller was indeed researching these things as he said, and Jason also had to guess that the research site should be the basement.

Then what does this have to do with Batman?

Jason didn't think Schiller was hired by Batman to research anything, and there was no need at all.

Batman had some technical consultants, but they usually helped him manufacture weapons and equipment. Batman himself handled all the R&D, which sounded surprising, but for Batman, it was a daily routine.

So if Batman wanted to research something, there was no need to use others, and there was no need to come to this desolate little island. Wouldn't it be better to do it in the well-equipped Batcave?

The most unfathomable thing was, what does all this have to do with him? Batman should know that he was even further away from being a scientist.

Jason, sitting on the sofa thinking about all this, didn't know when he fell asleep, but when he woke up, the sky was completely dark, and the fire in the fireplace was burning brightly.

Schiller, who had been claiming to be very busy, sat down on the sofa opposite Jason and said, "Have time to talk, Jason?"

"Doesn't that depend on you? Are you done?"

"Just about." Schiller nodded and said, "Come to fulfill some duties of a psychologist."

"I'm glad you haven't forgotten," Jason said sarcastically. "If this is your trick, it worked. It changed a person who insisted he was not sick and didn't need treatment, making him wait a day just to say a few words to you."

"I'm sorry, but I was indeed thinking about some more important things, about myself," Schiller said without any avoidance.

This instead made Jason feel suspicious. From the process of his previous communication with the Bat-family, it could be seen that this doctor came from another universe. So what happened in this universe that would make him think of himself?

"Do you want to talk about yourself?" Jason finally decided to take a risky step. For any lunatic with a strong desire to express himself, this was an irresistible offer.

He might be influenced, but he might also remain rational and gain more information from his narrative.

"Which part do you want to hear?"

Jason had to admit that he was still a bit interested, so he said, "About how you turned yourself into a sheep."

Schiller raised his head slightly, leaned his body back, and said, "I can't say I'm surprised by this. People who see this point are all very interested in it."

"Then did you tell them?"

"Jason." Schiller was clearly choosing his words very carefully. He said, "Some people don't have the patience to finish listening, and some people don't dare to finish listening."

"I won't be either." Jason said firmly, "I have plenty of patience and won't feel fear."

"But you might take violent action."

"Why?"

"The process is clearly not as beautiful as you think." Schiller folded his fingers together and said, "People are all struggling in trauma, and then growing up."

"Do you want to tell me about your trauma?"

"I think you misunderstood."

At this moment, Jason held his breath. He saw gorgeous colors blooming on that suit, and while it completely attracted his gaze, Schiller seemed to have become a different person.

"I am usually the trauma of others."

Run, run, run!

This was what Jason's instinct was telling him. In this instant, he regretted it. He shouldn't have turned the key of the clockwork an extra half-turn. Wouldn't it have been better to just look at the side with the soft wool?

Schiller's tone changed, no longer slow, but with a kind of focused power that made it impossible for people to block out this voice. Even if you didn't pay attention, it still drilled into your ears.

"Jason, feeling the fear of others while fleeing in a panic is still not the deepest bottom a lamb can fall to."

Jason couldn't help but be attracted. He knew this was dangerous, he knew it better than anyone, but he wanted to keep listening.

"You are lucky. Before you had the power to protect yourself, you didn't reveal any talent. If not for that, you would know that there is an animal that is the common enemy of wolves and sheep, presidents and shepherds."

"What is that?"

"A venomous snake, because its venom kills with one strike, and no one dares to bet." Schiller said pointedly, "When you possess venom, you only have two choices: live in fear forever, or bring fear to others."

Jason knew what Schiller had chosen.

"Death can end the crimes of a wicked wolf, but they won't repent. The firm and powerful screams before death will still bring unimaginable panic to the flock, making them live in fear and suspicion for the rest of their lives."

"You must crush the ridiculous pride of everyone who dares to manipulate you, make them bow down, and offer up the principles they have insisted on for half their lives for you to trample on, just to gratefully enjoy the death you bestow, in order to truly end those spiritual legacies of harm."

Schiller stood up. Jason's body was pressed tightly against the back of the sofa. Even when Schiller walked to his side, he didn't move. At this moment, he understood that Schiller was right.

Facing the lion in the room, one can still put up a desperate fight, but if the venomous snake coiled on the ground has venom that kills with one strike, it's best to remain still.

Schiller walked behind Jason. He pressed one of Jason's shoulders with his hand, bent down, and said to him, "Describe what you see next, and tell it to me completely."

Just as Jason tensed up, a syringe pricked his neck. Jason smelled the scent of fear.

His pupils dilated instantly, and he instinctively said, "No..."

Jason was back in that cramped room, his hands hanging from the ceiling, covered in wounds.

"Who are you?" the voice that terrified him asked.

"I am Jason..."

Pain! Excruciating pain! Irresistible pain.

"What do you see?" Schiller's voice came vaguely. Jason felt he didn't have the strength to answer, but he felt his neck being strangled, and the murderer was waiting for his answer.

Jason kicked his legs weakly, trying hard to pull his mind away, and said, "The Joker asked for my name... I... answered, and he left a scar on me."

"Continue."

"He asked again, and it was another scar."

"Does it hurt?"

"Of course."

"He said Batman forgot me... I refuted him... bleeding, a lot of blood... he made me read the newspaper... on it... there was Robin... ha..."

Jason looked like he was truly suffocating. Schiller relaxed his arm a little. He gasped for air and said, "He peeled off my skin... the newspaper... on the wound..."

"What's next?"

Jason couldn't speak anymore. Schiller tightened his arm gripping his neck again. Jason continued to kick his legs, but was unable to break free. He gasped for a long time, and finally said.

"He wanted me... to remember his name... Joker... the letter J..."

Schiller suddenly released his arm. Jason rushed forward violently, knocked over the coffee table, and fell to the ground.

Schiller walked up and stuffed two pills into his mouth. Jason lay there gasping for a long time.

Schiller squatted down beside him and said, "You didn't forget, Jason. You remember the fear the Joker brought you clearly."

"You understand, even without fear toxin, you will dream of him every night for the rest of your life, dream of how he tortured you, how he brought you pain and fear."

"Jason, what if Batman kills the Joker? Can he erase your memory? Can he erase the harm you've suffered?"

"Do you think he can watch you spend the rest of your life in pain with a clear conscience? You know he can't, Jason, you know."

Jason clenched his fists, trembling. Schiller grabbed his hair, turned his face to himself, and said, "You want to say he didn't even do the first step for you, didn't even avenge you, and didn't use his own actions to agree with your view."

"Not so, Jason. His change is quite amazing, just skipping those unimportant red tape... You really have to come and see."

After speaking, in Jason's terrified eyes, Schiller pulled up the 200-pound strong body with one hand, grabbed Jason's neck, walked through the living room, went down the stairs, and dragged him to the basement door, throwing him to the ground.

When Jason fell to the ground, he felt dizzy, but as usual, he didn't feel any hostility from Schiller. Schiller didn't attack him, so what was he doing?

Through the light in the basement door crack, Jason saw a sharp, thin face with green hair, pale skin, and a red mouth stretched wide.

The Joker laughed at him through the door crack.

In the blink of an eye, that wasn't the Joker. There was no exaggerated makeup, just a stranger lying on the ground.

And what made Jason misread it was the smile on this stranger's face, exactly the same as the Joker's. He closed his eyes, but the smile seemed carved onto his face.

Creak, the basement door was pushed open. Jason, lying on the ground, saw Schiller walk in, pick up the man, and place him on an operating table.

"His name is Henry. He is the new Joker. Batman caught him and then handed him over to me."

Jason was stiff with shock and couldn't move. Schiller stood in front of the operating table, looking down at him, his face completely submerged in the shadows.

"Jason, come here. Cut him open, or I'll cut you open."
