Chapter 2055: A Knight
In the biting cold wind of early morning, Robin stood at the window and watched Batman's plane take off. He knew his next stop was Washington, while Barbara stood behind him, moved her wheelchair to his side, and said.
"Don't worry too much. He has never been troubled by such worldly things. We still have our own things to do."
"It's not that simple, Barbara." Robin looked back at Barbara sitting in the wheelchair and said, "Don't you think all this is very strange? We still don't know who stunned the whole city."
"Perhaps we should go to jail and ask Scarecrow." Barbara sighed and said, "Besides him, who else would be so crazy?"
Robin's lips moved, but he thought that all his speculations were guesses without any real evidence, so he had to walk to the sofa nearby, sit down, and say, "Whether you believe it or not, I have a bad premonition. Batman's trip to Washington won't be very smooth. We've experienced too many unexpected things."
Barbara naturally heard Robin's implication. She couldn't say she had no speculation, but she still comforted him according to common sense: "Don't think so much. The most urgent thing now is to reorganize Cat Getan's order. Dick said he would stay, right?"
"He has always been happy to help, but he has to go back to Blüdhaven first to make sure everything is fine there. Are you going to the police station?"
"I will be on standby in the Zhong Lou, same as usual. I will inform you where there is trouble that needs to be handled through the Eye system. Remember to keep communication."
After Barbara left, Robin sat in place, worried, for a while. Not long after, he found that Peter had actually left with Barbara.
Robin went to the monitoring room of the Batcave at the fastest speed. After finding that Dick wasn't there, he started tracking Peter's whereabouts like a thief.
He saw Batman's new assistant go to the Zhong Lou with Barbara first. Of course, he didn't do anything there, just chatted with Barbara, but this looked even more suspicious.
Immediately after, he went to the Cat Getan Police Department. This was something Robin didn't expect. Then he didn't do anything there either, and chatted with Gordon again. It was suspicious to the extreme.
As for going to the Penguin's manor later, it seemed less surprising after these two things. Of course, he might have gone to beat the Penguin up. This reason made perfect sense.
But not long after, even more incomprehensible behavior appeared. Peter started wandering around Cat Getan City.
Sometimes he went to the northern islands, turning around in various buildings' rooms and basements, sometimes he approached the Stagg airship, going in and out between elevators and corridors.
Even stranger, this guy could actually crawl on the walls, and when he had nothing to do, he would dismantle the entrance of the ventilation duct and crawl in, causing Robin to lose his trail on the monitoring screen.
In most cases, humans imitating the movements of insects wouldn't have much aesthetic appeal, only appearing very strange and reminding people of some bad experiences.
If Robin had to describe Peter Parker's behavior in Cat Getan City, it would be that it was really like a cockroach getting into a room—you don't know what his purpose is for scurrying around, you only know how fast he scurries, and how scary he looks.
Robin swallowed, took two steps back, and wanted to call Nightwing over to see this, but remembered that he might still be in Blüdhaven. Just as Robin was considering whether to call Nightwing, Nightwing called him first.
"Hey, Tim." Nightwing's voice had a bit of current sound. He said, "Strange traces appeared in one of my bases, and the surveillance footage was deleted. I can't be sure what's going on. Perhaps I can send the data to you to see?"
Robin received the data sent by Nightwing with his communication equipment. The most striking thing on it was the traces of the truck driving by. There was no license plate, but the tire tracks could roughly determine which company the truck was hired by.
Following this clue, there weren't many suspicious objects, because most people in Cat Getan were anesthetized. Besides superheroes, there were super-criminals who had the ability to act.
Robin didn't think any super-criminal would have nothing to do at this time and drive this truck to Blüdhaven, and even sneak into Nightwing's base.
Just as Robin was thinking about this question, he heard movement from the laboratory under the Batcave. When he walked down cautiously and pushed the door open, he found that the person standing in front of the experimental table was actually Peter Parker.
Seeing him come in, Peter was startled, his gaze shifted away immediately, but he still threw a protective suit over immediately and said, "If you want to come in, put it on, but I advise you better not come in."
"What are you doing?"
"Some chemical analysis experiments... wait, don't move forward anymore." Peter stretched out a hand to stop Robin's movement and said, "I don't know if you have recited the laboratory safety regulations, but either wear a protective suit or leave here."
Robin frowned deeply. He held the doorknob and looked at Peter, saying, "You should know that Batman's laboratory has the most perfect safety measures in the world, right?"
"There are no sufficiently safe measures in this world, only researchers who pay attention to safety." Peter said quite dissatisfied: "If you are not professional enough, then listen to me. This is responsible for your own life safety."
Robin's hand movements stiffened. Almost no one in the Bat-family would speak to him in this tone. Even Batman wouldn't. Batman would usually only say to him, "Wait outside, we will discuss this in half an hour."
But Robin didn't rush in rashly either. He just stood at the door and asked, "What experiment are you doing?"
"I said it, chemical analysis."
"I mean specifically analyzing what."
"A chemical substance that can be analyzed."
Robin looked at Peter speechlessly. Peter shook his head and said, "Sorry, I can't explain to you in detail what this thing is, because I only know after analyzing it."
"If you want to come in and see, then put on the protective suit. If you are not interested, leave, and then close the door. Don't forget to check the airtightness."
After speaking, Peter turned back and started to busy himself with the work in his hands.
Robin could see that he wasn't lying. Every point he emphasized to him was sincere, but the biggest problem was what Peter was doing now.
Robin didn't have chemical persecution delusions and wouldn't feel that chemical experiments were all evil, but if this experiment was really harmless, why didn't Peter do it when Batman was there? Why did he have to wait until he left to secretly mess around in the laboratory alone?
But Robin really didn't have a chemical-related educational background. He knew that if he rushed in rashly, it was unlikely he would understand what Peter was fiddling with in a short time, and instead, it might arouse vigilance and alert the enemy.
So he chose to retreat one step, and after exiting the door, he helped Peter close the door, but turned around and recorded the process of Peter doing the experiment in the monitoring room.
There really weren't many famous chemists in Cat Getan, and even fewer were awake now. Finally, Robin still came to Scarecrow's cell.
Before going to court, all criminals would be detained at the police station. Considering the danger of Cat Getan's criminals, the cells of the Cat Getan Police Department were located in the basement of the police station, with strict security. At least the possibility of criminals like Scarecrow escaping from prison wasn't high.
After telling Gordon his intention, Gordon arranged a safe room for Robin. Scarecrow also knew he couldn't run away, so he didn't talk too much nonsense with Robin.
"Take me directly to Arkham. I have to pick a good room, so that when you throw those messy people in, they won't be beating gongs and drums upstairs again." Scarecrow said quite impatiently: "We all know the outcome of going to court. This kind of red tape can be avoided."
Although Robin was a bit angry at his unconcerned attitude, he knew he was asking for help. Although he didn't agree, he didn't say much, throwing the disk with Peter's experimental process in front of Scarecrow.
Scarecrow picked it up and turned it in his hand with some doubt. Robin took out a micro projector again. Scarecrow inserted the disk unhurriedly.
In the dim room, the projector light flashed. Scarecrow didn't focus on watching at first, playing with his cuffs with his head down, muttering to himself.
But soon he was attracted by the picture on the screen. From Scarecrow's expression, Robin could tell that he definitely knew something.
Scarecrow reached out and pressed stop on the projection and rewound it. The lens stayed on the notebook with some text. The text was very blurry, and the vocabulary made Robin feel even more strange, but obviously, Scarecrow didn't think so.
After watching it several times, Scarecrow raised his head slightly, a look of realization appeared on his face, and then he revealed a cold smile that Robin was very familiar with.
"Good kid," Scarecrow said.
"You better not hide anything from me. You know I can see through every lie of yours." Robin said in a low tone.
"And you don't have to deliberately imitate Batman. You know you are not him, and no one in this city is afraid of you." Scarecrow retorted unceremoniously.
His hands were handcuffed, and his feet were fixed to the stool, so he could almost not move. Looking at Robin walking toward him, Scarecrow didn't reveal any look of fear.
"You can certainly beat me up, but if you beat me into the hospital, no one will be able to stop this kid."
Robin's movements paused, his brows furrowed. He stood on the other side of the table, staring at Scarecrow, and said: "I hope you give me some evidence to prove that you are the best chemist in this city, not just someone who can only talk."
"If you continue to be so stubborn, I will arrange your room downstairs from Two-Face, and you will listen to the sound of coins falling all day."
Scarecrow snorted coldly, muttered a few more words, and said: "You didn't learn one-tenth of Batman, but I can indeed do you a favor. I have to let this kid named Peter Parker know that I am the most professional chemist in this city."
"So what is he doing?"
"Chemical analysis."
"Be specific!" Robin gritted his teeth and said.
"He is analyzing a 'virus'."
Robin widened his eyes.
Scarecrow crossed his hands in front of his chest, thinking while saying: "He should be analyzing its infectivity. The things written on his notebook are very unusual. I can only tell you that this is the result of an immunocytochemical staining for a certain virus."
"What's the result?"
Unexpectedly, Scarecrow thought for several minutes before adopting a cautious tone that Robin had never heard before and answered:
"It might be a type of prion, but I need to get a specific image of the cerebral cortex traits to infer which one it is specifically."
"What will this virus cause?"
Scarecrow looked at Robin as if looking at an illiterate, but he still curled his lips and answered: "Within your range of understanding, it usually makes people go crazy."
