Chapter 2276: Gotham Music Festival (24)
"Calm down, Clark." Schiller stood not far from Clark and said, "Your name is Clark Kent, and you are currently in a bar in Gotham. You are very safe, and we are all your friends."
"Friends... no... no... traitor..."
"What are you talking about?" Diana frowned, staring tightly at Clark, as if she was ready to use restrictive measures at any time.
Schiller stepped forward and blocked Diana, walking toward Clark, but Hal waved his hand at him, telling him not to approach Clark. After all, Clark had lost control, and no one here could hold him back. Schiller might be in danger.
But Schiller still leaned over slowly, repeating to Clark who he was, where he was now, and that he was very safe, until Clark's breathing slowed down, and Schiller walked over and patted his back.
Clark sat on the bar stool, his upper body lying on the bar, sweat dripping from his hair tips and eyebrows.
"Are you okay? Clark." Hal asked with great concern, "Did you drink too much? Or are you allergic to some ingredient in the drink?"
"Is your ability having problems?" Diana clearly wanted to make some more practical guesses.
Clark opened his mouth. He wanted to refute, but how could mind-reading problems not count as problems? So he remained silent.
Schiller signaled Diana not to speak with his eyes. He said, "Perhaps letting alcohol flow in your blood isn't a good habit. That might make you make wrong judgments."
It's like this again, Hal thought. Schiller seemed to explain this as Clark drinking too much, but also took into account Diana's conjecture. Combining the two, it became that Clark let the alcohol go too far, resulting in a misjudgment of his ability, which caused him to suddenly show a state of losing control.
Hal could feel that Schiller wasn't lying, and Clark's expression also proved that what Schiller said was the fact, but why did this sentence sound like it was talking about other things?
This little episode passed quickly, and Clark soon returned to normal, but this reminded everyone that it was very dangerous to make such a powerful existence lose his mind, and Clark was also promising them that he would never drink again in the future.
After everyone dispersed, Clark turned back to look for Schiller, who was staying in the bar to clean up the wreckage of the bar. He stood on the edge of the mess, at a loss, but still couldn't help asking, "What was that?"
"Normal phenomenon."
"No, Doctor, I mean what I felt..."
"It's a normal phenomenon." Schiller repeated again.
Clark stared at Schiller, as if wanting to see something from his expression. Unfortunately, Schiller had been cleaning the bar silently. Finally, Clark couldn't bear it anymore. The fragments floated up and all flew into the trash can next to him. Schiller had no work to do, so he could only look at him in place.
"Doctor, please." Clark looked at Schiller quite helplessly and said, "I must know what Oliver is enduring, why he has this emotion, that almost crushed me, and it will also crush him."
"It won't." Schiller just said calmly.
Clark showed a look of pain. Schiller walked up and patted his back to comfort him, and said, "Oliver knows very well what he is doing. From the moment he embarked on this road, there was no room for weakness and retreat."
"I don't understand, the pain he has endured is already enough, where did these come from? Why are you unwilling to tell me and let me solve them?"
"Because it's very difficult for you to solve. In this world, some things aren't just divided into right and wrong." Schiller shrugged and said.
Clark kept staring at Schiller with those eyes, as if he wouldn't give an answer today, he would stare a hole in Schiller's back with this gaze.
"I cannot explain all this in my current capacity, and you won't accept it either." Schiller shook his head and said, "If you want to listen, you must be prepared."
Clark nodded slowly and cautiously.
"I once worked for the FBI."
Clark opened his eyes wide in shock. He stared at Schiller and said, "You aren't... I mean, for the purpose of obtaining information, right?"
Schiller shook his head and said, "It's not about this universe, it's about my previous life."
Clark recalled Schiller saying he came to this universe because of death, which meant this was before he died.
Clark let out a sigh of relief.
And then his curiosity rose. This was a huge secret. He knew everyone was prying into Schiller's past life to some extent, but no one got a complete answer.
And now he got a new puzzle piece. He just wanted to know what the cause of all this was, what it led to, and why he mentioned this.
"An accident." Schiller said, "And then I started cooperating with them, so I understand them."
"FBI?"
Schiller shook his head and said, "All of them, they can be roughly summarized as all law enforcement and intelligence agencies in the United States."
"Does Oliver's matter have anything to do with them?"
"It has always had something to do with them."
Clark was really convinced. Before, Schiller's way of speaking was acupuncture, now Schiller's way of speaking is scraping, going around and around, and finally circling back to nonsense that has no meaning, but this nonsense seems to be part of the truth, implying some important secret.
Clark now started to miss that professor immensely. He swore that from now on, he would never say Schiller the professor was poisonous in his heart. Sometimes it's better for this mouth to be poisonous. Schiller's wording was so conservative that Clark thought he was watching the first speech after a US president took office.
"So who did it?" Clark intended to hit the nail on the head.
"All of them."
"What did they do?"
"The things they have always been doing."
"Doctor!"
"I'm here, don't worry too much."
Clark felt what it was like to be short of oxygen for the first time.
Schiller walked to the sofa next to him and sat down, beckoning to Clark. Clark also had to sit by his side. Schiller turned his head and said, "Look, I am a psychologist. My entire duty is to keep my patients in a good mood, so I will tell you, don't worry too much."
"This is the thing that makes the least mistakes within my duty. I've done this much, and that's enough. I am worthy of our relationship and the consultation fee the patient gave me, so I have always been a good doctor."
"But I think, you will be deeply impressed by that professor because you always remember some of his biting words. Although too direct, they always point directly to the truth and give you inspiration and guidance. Do you think he is a good professor?"
"Of course, of course he is."
"Does everyone think so?"
Clark was silent.
He couldn't conscience-fully say that Schiller was a good professor who was praised by everyone. In fact, the evaluation of anyone who had dealt with him in depth was very complicated. Even just in terms of teaching ability and teacher ethics, it was by no means a complete praise, and could even be said to be mixed.
Even Schiller's good friend Victor often said that Schiller used his own talent to set others up, expecting others to have the same genius inspiration as him. Besides that, the teaching of theory could be said to be mediocre. If one had to say it, this teaching method was more suitable for students with talent.
Everyone thought Schiller indeed hadn't done anything to let students down from the root, but some means for the sake of students were too radical, which seriously affected his evaluation of teacher ethics.
So in general, Schiller's evaluation in this regard was mixed. Although it couldn't have any impact on him, it was always not as good as his consistent praise in another universe.
Greed's professional ability and medical ethics in Marvel were completely praised. Some people said that he made too much noise when treating patients, which was a bit scary, and some people said that he concealed plans and always made people surprised.
But no one ever questioned his treatment method. Although there wasn't much morality, the medical ethics were full.
"Do you know why this is?" Schiller asked.
Clark shook his head. Schiller sighed and said, "The reason why Pride is Pride is because no matter what the environment is, he adheres to his pride and won't be flexible."
"If he wants to tell the truth, what he says must be the truth, and it is the truest truth, without euphemistic modifiers, it must hit the nail on the head and hit the key point."
"But I am different. I don't have so many persistence. I can say it or not. If I want to say it, I can break it apart and knead it, hide it in a whole sea of gentle good words. It doesn't matter if you don't understand. Anyway, I said it. If you don't understand, it's because your understanding is not enough."
"And if your condition doesn't improve because you don't understand, I don't care, because I have other ways to cure you, and you will inevitably be cured. No matter whether you understand the truth, whether you understand what I am saying and doing, you are destined to walk on that road."
"Pride's every letting go of his pride is painful. He does this because some things are worth it, and if I have no persistence, I am invulnerable. Nothing is worth it."
"This is the difference between the two, Clark. When you are ruthless enough, you won't be in pain. As long as you have concerns, you will always feel despair."
Clark found that he gradually understood. Although these words were in the clouds and had no beginning or end, he miraculously substituted himself into Oliver's perspective.
It wasn't that he wanted to come back, but he had to come back. But even if he came back, his heart still remained on that land, with concerns, pain, and despair.
Did Oliver point out some truth? Did he put down his pride for this? But even so, did he still fail?
Did the pain and despair that Clark had felt when he empathized with him come from the fact that others didn't believe the naked truths he pointed out? What did they do?
Clark let himself not think about it, and he didn't dare to think about it, because connecting it to the "all of them" that Schiller mentioned inexplicably before, he worried that this might be a trap planned for a long time.
Clark understood that he wasn't actually worried. The moment his super brain started running, he knew this must be a fact, but he wasn't willing to believe it emotionally.
Because if it really was all of them, and it really was planned for a long time, and Oliver had already appeared here, carrying endless pain and despair, then it proved that there weren't many turning points left.
Clark stood up with a 'swoosh'. He flew out of the door quickly, stopped at the moment he crossed the bar door, slowed down, turned back to look at Schiller, and said.
"Doctor, I don't know why you can firmly say 'nothing is worth it', but I sincerely wish you will realize the shallowness of this moment one day. We all have such a day."
"My day hasn't passed too long, so I know that even if some things are not right or wrong, history cannot fairly judge whether our actions are worth it, time will definitely prove that someone cares, someone remembers—then everything is worth it." ===== CHAPTER 2277 =====
