Chapter 2873

~10 min read 1,912 words

Golden light flared, several beams of radiance shooting out, yet they halted barely within a one-meter radius; dense moonlight imprisoned Doctor Fate inside the room.

"Constantine! What are you doing?! How can you be together with a vampire?! Or have you already...?"

"Obviously, this wasn't my doing." Constantine looked at Doctor Fate with some helplessness. "Do you think I had a choice?"

Doctor Fate had no choice but to turn his head and look at that figure.

His presence was indeed very strong; a meticulously tailored, crisp suit appeared out of place in the chaotic room, and he was carrying a huge golden candelabrum in his hand, which still had blood on it.

"You damn vampire!" Doctor Fate's authoritative voice rang out. "What did your master send you here for? Does he also think he can't handle Constantine, so he wants to kill him?! I won't let you succeed."

Constantine had one hand on his hip and pointed helplessly out the window with the other; Doctor Fate glanced back slightly, and upon seeing that full moon, his eyes widened somewhat in shock.

"If I'm not mistaken, wherever the moonlight falls will become an extradimensional space like the House of Mystery, and only he can decide who may leave." Constantine shook his head and said.

"If that Vampire King had that kind of ability, you wouldn't have been able to come here." Constantine picked up his unfinished beer, downed two mouthfuls, wiped his mouth, and said: "He also broke through Zatanna's mental seal and woke her up."

Doctor Fate felt somewhat shocked; he had no choice but to look at the man before him once more.

From his brows and eyes one could tell he was still young; his pupils were nearly all white, with only a thin dark rim visible at the edges, and a blood-red hue floated around them like other vampires, but there was none of that evil that makes one feel repulsion and disgust — only an indescribable coldness.

If one looked closely, one could also see that he seemed to be suppressing something; something dangerous was on the verge of spilling out.

Doctor Fate also noticed that the hand holding the golden candelabrum was burning with tiny flames; this flame was not a weapon, but more like an instrument of torture, burning his palm until flesh and blood were blurred, almost pitch-black.

But he did not show much expression of pain; only those suppressed things grew even more restless.

"Leave this place." Constantine persuaded further: "If you want to do something, go find Batman first; you can find answers to almost every problem there."

The moonlight grew brighter and brighter, until it swallowed everything; Constantine involuntarily covered his eyes, and when he came to his senses, the room no longer had that figure — only the bloodstains remaining on the cup testified that he had once been here.

Constantine walked to the window; a sharp crescent moon hung high above the pitch-black city of London.

Soon, movement came from the bedroom; Constantine walked in and found Zatanna sitting up clutching her chest. Constantine let out a clear sigh and said: "You're a vampire now; wounds burned by a holy artifact are hard to heal. I gave you a simple bandaging; hope you don't mind."

Zatanna merely shook her head with a pale face. She said: "I feel like I had a nightmare. I was controlled by someone and wreaked widespread destruction, and drank the blood of many people. I... I woke up too late."

"Not too late." Constantine placed his hand over Zatanna's hand and said: "Can you tell me what exactly happened? Since we last parted, what did you encounter?"

"I... I don't remember too clearly." Zatanna bit her lip and said.

Doctor Fate approached the bedroom door; he crossed his arms and said: "Can I listen too? After all, no one knows how this catastrophe started right now."

"I discovered my father's whereabouts." Zatanna frowned and said: "In a valley in Nevada. I knew my father once toured there; I thought he might have left some clues for me there."

"So you went looking for him?"

"Yes, but I never expected that waiting for me there was a huge trap." Zatanna pressed her hand to her temple and said: "I don't remember the specific process, but I felt my neck hurt a lot, then I felt very hungry, and I stumbled into the city, but those fast foods couldn't fill my stomach at all..."

"You bit people?"

"Maybe." Zatanna's complexion grew worse and worse. She said: "I'm not trying to evade my guilt, but at that time hunger had already occupied my brain; besides that, I couldn't remember anything at all."

"How did you get back to Britain?"

"I don't know either, but I think I might have opened a portal by instinct, wanting to go home, but at that time I was delirious, and the portal had a bit of a problem."

"Where did you land?"

"I'm sure it was London, but it wasn't my home." Zatanna pursed her lips and said: "It seemed to be... Islington."

"That fits." Constantine nodded and said: "Yesterday a church in Islington caught fire. Don't be nervous; it probably wasn't you. I saw the candelabrum that guy was holding; it looked like the style the old church there habitually uses."

"Looks like he's quite clever." Zatanna said: "It's also possible he's an insider; otherwise he wouldn't know that the ritual vessels enshrined before the deity statues are even more lethal than ordinary crosses."

"That candelabrum probably has quite an extraordinary origin." Constantine mused: "Modern churches rarely use candelabra that large anymore; I suspect it might be a medieval model phased out by Westminster Abbey, and combined with his mysterious moonlight ability, some fanged rats are going to have very bad luck."

Zatanna licked her own teeth; discovering her fangs were still there, she felt somewhat disappointed, but she still said: "After establishing a blood connection with him, I felt my connection to the Vampire King was severed."

"Who is the Vampire King?" Doctor Fate hurriedly asked.

"I don't know. In the instant the link broke, I forgot everything." Zatanna shook her head and said: "I only know he has a grand conspiracy."

"What is it?"

"Vampires fear sunlight. They want to erect a barrier between the sun and the Earth, so that the Earth forever loses sunlight; then they can occupy the Earth."

"Wild fantasy." Constantine commented.

"But they are indeed formidable, and this kind of conversion cannot be easily detected. For safety's sake, I think we should..."

"I was just about to make some holy water. Want to come?" Constantine looked at Doctor Fate and asked; he saw that Doctor Fate suspected him, so he used this indirect way to prove himself.

Doctor Fate followed Constantine to the bathroom. Lying on the bed, Zatanna felt her thoughts in chaos, as if something kept calling to her; the bloody scent lingering at the tip of her nose, impossible to dispel, made her frown tightly; closing her eyes brought a surging sea of blood.

"Ugh... really rotten luck." A voice came from the alley; a somewhat gaunt figure slowly stood up. He pulled his cloak to the front and wrung it forcefully a few times, and the water flowing into the sewer was a dark red.

It was a bearded, long-faced man; a red cloak draped behind him. His complexion was not good, somewhat pale, eyes sunken in their sockets, and his whole body exuded a dense bloody smell.

He swayed on the spot, but then a sound came from behind; he turned and saw two figures vault over the wall. He cursed, then slowly raised both hands; black power, like nimble pythons, coiled around the two pursuers.

He clenched both hands into fists violently, directly crushing the two into pulp; a rain of blood sprinkled the sky, and the cloak that had just been wrung dry became dripping with fresh blood again.

Some red power from the two bodies was absorbed; the pale-faced man let out a long breath and murmured: "Although I don't know what these guys' background is, the power inside their bodies is not small. Kill a hundred or so more, and perhaps I can recover to half my peak state."

He stood firm in place, raised a hand again, and at the spot where the remains of the two crushed corpses fell, two identical figures actually crawled out of the ground, swaying as they stood behind him.

He had just wanted to walk out when he heard movement outside the alley.

A miserable scream rang out; a silver figure descended from the sky, smashing a corpse onto the ground, its neck nearly completely severed. The tall youth stared blankly at the air for a while, but also seemed to be checking something, then looked at the bearded man and said: "You're a player too? You were hard to find. You can call me Arkham Knight. What's your name?"

"Doctor Strange." The man who called himself Doctor Strange replied. He did not retreat, but warily sized up this youth.

He wore a suit of very high-tech looking armor; his head was completely encased in the armor, his true face unseen, but the fresh blood on his hands and feet had not been washed off; the corpse on the ground was obviously killed by him.

"What's the deal with those two behind you? Need me to help?"

"No need. They are my servants." Doctor Strange raised his chin slightly and said: "Re-introducing: Doctor Strange, profession: Necromancer."

"Cool." Arkham Knight exclaimed in admiration.

He turned around, because two more figures appeared at the alley entrance. Seeing their exposed fangs, Arkham Knight was clearly a bit impatient. He shook his hand and said: "Truly chewing gum that can't be shaken off."

"I'll handle it." Doctor Strange stepped forward, extended both hands, and black energy surged out again; all bound enemies exploded into blood mist, red light pouring into his body, making the black power even stronger.

Then he flew into mid-air, raised both hands, and countless corpses identical to the previous enemies stood up; the two sides clashed in battle.

Arkham Knight extended a hand to the side; a grapnel fired out, carrying him to the roof of a nearby shop. Overlooking the battle below, he lightly raised a hand, and a massive sniper rifle assembled itself in his hand.

A long sniper bullet sliced through the air, creating ripples, and struck an enemy's head with precise accuracy.

Bang! The head exploded like a watermelon.

Doctor Strange frowned slightly and stepped back, then flew up to the second floor, standing beside Arkham Knight and saying: "Do you really have to make it this bloody?"

"Then why did you choose this dungeon?" Arkham Knight asked knowingly, his tone mocking: "Isn't it a bit late to be playing the good guy now?"

Doctor Strange let out a cold snort and said nothing, for he naturally knew that those who come to this kind of dungeon are not good people, since everyone understands that only by killing humanity's public enemies—vampires or zombies—can one act freely without fear of blame from teammates; they are here simply to enjoy the slaughter.

Such a scene is rare and hard to come by, so if that's the case, then let's abandon all moral coercion—kill as many as come, for that is the solution to every problem.
