Chapter 2898

~11 min read 2,153 words

"J'onn, without reading minds, can you judge the truth or falsehood of a person's words?" Superman looked at Martian Manhunter and asked.

"I can tell if a person is being duplicitous." Martian Manhunter gestured, but seemed not to know how to explain it to Earthlings. He lowered his hands and said, "In short, I can tell how large the gap is between what they say and what they are thinking."

"Can you also tell if it's unintentional beautification?"

"No, everyone subjectively beautifies themselves. I can only judge whether they have concealed important facts."

Batman nodded and said, "That is enough. I can judge how much subjective emotion is mixed into the narrative."

Superman nodded again, then immediately looked at Batman and said, "I don't wish for this to turn into an interrogation session, even if you are interrogating everyone else. However, I also believe you can judge whether they have suspicions based on their words and actions, so what do you intend to do?"

"Let everyone give their own account first." Batman said, "In my view, you are all ordinary people. Untrained ordinary people will definitely have loopholes in their speech. The more they say, the more mistakes they make."

"I have no objection to that." Wonder Woman said, "I can go first, but I truly don't know what to say. Should I introduce my own life resume?"

"There's no need to start from that early." Batman said, "Just talk about how you heard the news after the vampire incident broke out, what you did after hearing the news, and how you viewed this matter. The more detailed, the better; it's best to be precise to every hour of every day."

Wonder Woman immediately made a bitter face. In fact, the facial features of all the superheroes present wrinkled up.

"Hey! Batman! Not everyone has a memory as superb as yours." Jana complained, "I can't even remember what I ate the night before last. You want me to be precise to the hour?"

"Say as much as you can remember. Speak in chronological order. Don't make things up for the parts you can't remember; just say you can't remember."

"I'm afraid in the time to come, you'll only hear a whole lot of 'I can't remember'." Aquaman sighed and said, "The rise of the vampires was also a few months ago."

Batman, however, seemed completely unbothered. Superman had to say, "Then Wonder Woman first, I'm second. Who wants to be third?"

"Me." Jana said, "If I say it now, I can still remember a little. If I wait until after listening to yours, I'll forget even more."

Her words reminded the others that going earlier was more advantageous. Of course, some also felt that because there wouldn't be more testimonies to corroborate each other beforehand, it could make one's suspicion seem smaller.

Of course, some also felt that stating more details was more advantageous to themselves, so they decided to speak later, leaving some time to think carefully.

Wonder Woman began her narrative.

Her opening was not bad. When she first heard that vampires had started expanding again, she was visiting an East African country as the Princess of Themyscira. As soon as the plane landed, she received the Justice League's communication.

However, at that time, she didn't take it to heart at all. If vampires were to expand, they would expand in cities; it was simply too far from the Amazon rainforest.

Moreover, for so many years, vampires had basically come out to cause trouble once every century. For an immortal like Wonder Woman, it really couldn't be considered news. After reading the notification, she threw it to the back of her mind.

And then, attack incidents occurred frequently. She was recalled to the Justice League and began to resolve vampire attacks on people all over the world.

When the Justice League resolved global incidents, there was a default division of labor. Generally speaking, superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman were global firefighters—to be precise, places outside the United States. Inside the United States, it was basically left to Batman and a few heroes who had their own cities.

It just so happened that Wonder Woman had to complete her diplomatic work in Africa, so she was responsible for the African continent. However, according to Wonder Woman, perhaps because Africa was too hot and the daylight hours were too long, basically no vampires went there, so later she went to the Middle East and West Asia.

Wonder Woman's memory was quite good. She basically recounted her itinerary for every day from a few months ago until now. And because the incidents resolved weren't many, most of the time was spent reading reports, attending exhibitions and press conferences, and conducting visits with leaders, which made people drowsy.

Wonder Woman spoke for nearly two and a half hours before finishing. Superman was yawning repeatedly, the Wonder Twins had slept a total of six times, Aquaman's head was almost buried in the glass fish tank, Cyborg, who was responsible for meeting minutes, was conscientious, and Martian Manhunter, whose duty it was, listened quite seriously.

Discovering there was no sound, Jana finally woke up. She yawned, stretched, and looked at Batman with bleary eyes.

Batman said nothing and looked at Superman, saying, "Next."

Thus, Superman also began to talk about his recent experiences.

Perhaps because his profession was a reporter, his narrative was much more concise than Wonder Woman's. However, he was the main force in fighting vampires, having handled thousands of incidents, big and small, over the past few months.

And don't look at how his super brain doesn't usually turn much, but his super memory was a passive skill. As long as he wanted, he could accurately and correctly describe what he was doing every second, so his narrative was even longer.

After a full four and a half hours, Superman finally explained clearly what he had done over these past few months. By the end, Martian Manhunter patted him on the shoulder, Aquaman sighed at him, and Cyborg was impressed to the point of prostration.

"Seriously, Batman, I think the Justice League really needs an Employee of the Month award. Let's give it to him right now!" Wonder Woman pointed at Superman and said.

No other reason; Superman basically hadn't been idle for 24 hours a day these past few months. He was still a reporter and had to go to work during the day, especially since he hoped to use his profession to soothe the public's panic, so he would write many extra articles outside of his main job.

Then he had to go around the world to put out fires. Wherever there was a large-scale vampire attack, his figure would be there. And what Superman considered large-scale was actually that he would go to save anyone whose cries for help he could hear. These past few months, he had basically been sleepless, busy 24 hours a day.

Previously, other members of the Justice League felt that Superman was the strongest among them and that dealing with those things was no trouble. Now it seemed that Superman could be called Superman not only because his power was strong, but this energy was also something ordinary people couldn't compare to.

At this time, the sky had already turned dark. When it was Jana's turn, she wailed at the top of her lungs: "I'm hungry! I didn't eat at noon! Aliens need to eat too!!!"

Her proposal was agreed upon by most people. After all, the vast majority of people here still had to eat.

But now the problem arose: the conference room was sealed. Where would the food come from?

As a result, Batman pressed a button, and a passage opened on the ceiling of the conference room. Food fell down with a clatter. At the same time, a series of kitchenware like frying pans and microwaves also fell down, and there were even two bottles of wine.

Superman sighed and said, "Alright, I'll go cook for you all. Who was gluten intolerant?"

"You thought of this long ago, too, right?" Wonder Woman looked at Batman and said with some helplessness.

Batman shook his head and said, "This is a base used by superheroes, not your home. It's perfectly normal for every room to have emergency food reserves."

"Reserves for how many days?" Green Lantern asked.

"Ten years."

Jana spat out a mouthful of water.

"That's not normal, right?! Do you think we'll be trapped here for ten years one day?!"

"Better safe than sorry."

Batman also stood up and walked to the Flash's side to check his wound. The Flash had a bitter face, but he hadn't forgotten to throw potato chips into his mouth with his intact hand.

Batman took a look and found that the wound should have been caused by two bullets. One hit the shoulder, and the other was in the flesh of the arm. The Flash was very lucky; neither bullet damaged his tendons or bones, which was why he could sit here.

"Why didn't you use the Speed Force to reverse time?" Batman asked.

"I was afraid that strange power would appear again." The Flash answered listlessly, "I felt that it was aimed at me. I wouldn't dare to bet on whether that guy was nearby."

"A smart approach." Batman evaluated.

The Flash's expression brightened at a speed visible to the naked eye. He grinned at Batman and said, "I knew you would praise me. I'm not always that unintelligent."

"No one said you were unintelligent." Batman changed his dressing and then said, "Can you describe to me in detail the kind of power that blocked you from running?"

"Actually, it didn't block me from running; it just tugged at my leg." The Flash took the sandwich Jana handed him and said while stuffing it into his mouth, "Although the Speed Force is very powerful, I still have to be able to run. If you tie my legs together, I can't conjure up the Speed Force out of thin air for you."

"So it hindered you from running?"

The Flash nodded.

"This shows that he knows you very well."

The Flash's chewing motion stiffened, but then he chewed hard a few times, swallowed it all at once, and said, "Not strange. After all, as a member of the Justice League, he knows each of us."

"But he chose to make a move on you."

The Flash's complexion became even worse. He said, "Maybe because my weakness is the most obvious."

"It could also be because he cares about you the most." Batman said as if casually, "Even if he wants to eliminate us one by one, he wants to start with you. Some kind of unique and evil sense of ritual."

The Flash closed his eyes.

"Why did you start eating tuna?" Jana looked at Zan with some strangeness and said, "Didn't you say this stuff was slimy?"

Zan shook his head, took a bite of the sandwich, and revealed a look of disgust, but then took another bite.

Jana looked left and right, snatched the sandwich, and said, "If you don't like eating it, don't eat it. I'll go find you a ham and cheese one."

Schiller looked at Jana's back, until he just felt a pang of heartache, seemingly thinking that vampires couldn't eat human food.

But in reality, it wasn't that complicated. Schiller simply wasn't used to eating this kind of cheap sandwich; it was the same no matter which flavor it was.

Taking advantage of Jana's departure, Schiller came to the table next to the conference room and watched Superman cook. Calling it cooking, it was actually just heating up sandwiches in the microwave, then scrambling an egg, frying a pancake, and so on.

The fragrance wafted over. Superman put a plate of scrambled eggs on the table. Schiller pretended to be very interested, immediately scooped up a large spoonful and put it into his mouth, giving Superman a thumbs up.

Superman smiled and said, "As long as you like it. I was just wondering if I put in too much butter."

Aquaman also came over, holding a tuna sandwich and stuffing it into the microwave. Martian Manhunter wanted to help Superman, and Wonder Woman took out her computer, wanting to work.

"Why is there no internet here?... This has to be sealed too? Alright, you're right about everything, Great Detective."

The conference room could be considered a scene of harmony, eating scrambled eggs and drinking whiskey. Schiller glanced toward the conference table and revealed a smile.

For normal people, naturally, they say whatever they want to say. For the mole, besides having to repeatedly think about whether their own narrative had flaws, they also had to think about whether other people's words had loopholes to grab. Isn't it just that whoever has no appetite is the one who is embarrassed?
