Chapter 3074: Romantic
Considering Carter's situation, Wei En gave Wanda a call.
Wanda and Jarvis had originally planned to fly to Los Angeles, spend half a day there shopping, and then head to Wei En's farm. After receiving Wei En's call, they couldn't be bothered with shopping anymore and teleported straight to the farm from the airport.
At this moment, Wei En was providing psychological counseling to Carter, but Carter's mental state was poor, mainly because her physical condition was so bad that simple psychological counseling had little effect.
After all, she was vomiting everything she ate, waking up every hour at night, and even when asleep, she was in a daze and constantly dreaming. Being able to maintain the ability to move during the day was already a testament to her incredibly strong willpower.
Before entering the door, Wanda tidied up her appearance. To fit the passionate and unrestrained style of California, she wore a beautiful red dress and pinned her hair up, inserting a California golden poppy on the side.
Although the flower part of the poppy is non-toxic, seeing so many children here, Wanda quickly plucked the flower and threw it away; after all, triggering a pollen allergy would be quite troublesome.
Carter leaned listlessly on the sofa, already half-asleep under Wei En's hypnosis. A flash of red light flickered in Wanda's eyes as she looked toward her belly.
She opened her mouth in surprise but quickly composed her expression. Steve hurried over, and after a moment of hesitation, Wanda pulled him into the backyard.
Steve stared at her, and she stared back at Steve. After they locked eyes for a few seconds, Wanda took a deep breath and said, "Let's get this straight, I can't be certain, but I think there's a possibility..."
"What?" Steve immediately became tense, barely daring to breathe.
"Your child might be a mutant."
"What?!!"
Wanda opened her mouth, then pursed her lips and said, "He is still too small, I have no way to determine his rating. Although I am also a mutant, I must remind you that over 90% of mutants are Gamma-level or below."
Wanda showed a hint of reluctance, but she still said, "Delta-level and Gamma-level basically don't affect daily life, but most have appearances different from ordinary people. Most Epsilon-level mutants have minor disabilities that don't affect normal life too much, but there is also a small portion..."
"It is precisely because I have seen many suffering mutants that I sincerely advise you not to gamble. After all, it's still early in the pregnancy, so there is still a chance to regret it..."
Steve revealed a look of despair, then he suddenly grabbed Wanda's arm tightly and said, "Could this have something to do with me being a modified human?"
Wanda shook her head and said, "I'm afraid it has nothing to do with that. The appearance of the X-gene is completely random. However, there is one possibility: that you or Carter are recessive carriers of the X-gene, in which case the child could inherit your X-genes and become dominant."
Steve stood frozen for several seconds, then said, "There were many people who underwent modification with me back then, but only I succeeded. Could it be because I might have had recessive X-genes in my body?"
"Under normal circumstances—and I mean only under normal circumstances—recessive X-genes wouldn't react with anything, otherwise they wouldn't be undetectable. But I know absolutely nothing about the technology that modified you into Captain America. Why don't you find a professional to ask?"
Steve returned, looking soul-lost.
Wanda whispered this to Jarvis, who had come out, and then Jarvis whispered it to Stark. Stark's eyebrows were almost twisted together.
He pulled Steve to an empty bar counter and said something to him. Steve's complexion improved slightly, and then Stark called Peter and Gwen over.
The group discussed it at the bar for a long time. After finishing, Stark picked up the phone and said, "I'll call Dr. Connors, but don't hold out too much hope. Too much time has passed since the Super Soldier Serum incident; trying to investigate it now is as difficult as ascending to heaven."
Steve hugged Carter and went upstairs, seemingly intending to tell her the truth. Wei En sat by the sofa watching all this and sighed in his heart.
In the vast majority of universes, Captain America has no biological offspring. Even if he does, the mother is not Carter. In one universe, he grew old with Peggy and had a daughter named Sharon, who later became the female Captain America.
There is another universe where the son seems to have become the Red Skull, but that universe specifically emphasized that the child was conceived before Steve had undergone modification.
This is actually not very normal, because Marvel is very keen on writing stories about the second generation of heroes. Not to mention the well-known second-generation mutants, even the second-generation Iron Man and Spider-Man have plenty of screen time. Captain America is, after all, a top-tier popular character, yet the portrayal of his offspring is sparse. There must be a reason for this in the real world.
Wei En's view on this is not optimistic; the gifts of fate have long been marked with a price in the dark.
After a while, crying sounds came from upstairs, which soon subsided. Helen went up once, and Pepper wanted to go up but stopped halfway. Elektra also coaxed little Jack back to his room to sleep.
By the time Wei En started preparing lunch, Steve finally came down with Carter in his arms. Although the female agent still looked haggard, her mental state was much better, and a strange luster even burst forth in her eyes.
If Wei En had to say, he saw resistance and rebellion in it; she didn't seem to want to accept her fate just like that.
Sure enough, Steve came over to help Wei En prepare the dishes. While washing vegetables, he lowered his voice and asked Wei En, "When will Erik and the others arrive?"
"There are some problems in the Andromeda Galaxy, so they might only be able to spare one day to attend the wedding. If you want the mutants to come over early, you shouldn't come to me; you should go to Bucky."
Steve's hands paused. He only then remembered that Bucky had been in the Andromeda Galaxy for quite a long time and had some connections there. However, Bucky seemed to have started dating a girlfriend recently, and Steve worried he wouldn't have the time.
But in the end, he still gave Bucky a call. It's unclear who Bucky contacted, but Wolverine Logan called Steve.
"Hello? Captain? This is Logan. We are dealing with a biological riot in the Andromeda Galaxy. If nothing goes wrong, we probably won't be able to return to Earth until three days later."
"I know you're in a hurry, but the fact is, even if we go back, we won't be of much use. We are mutants, but we are not mutant experts. The real experts who study mutants are on Earth. I think you should go ask Dr. Beast at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters, as well as other experts who study mutants."
"In addition, Erik suggests you look for the people who developed the Super Soldier Serum back then. If you really can't find them now, let Professor X's son, Legion, take you back in time to see if you can find the data on the serum."
After hanging up the phone, Steve pondered for a long time. It wasn't until Wei En took the vegetables from his hands that he came back to his senses.
"I think he's right. I should use a two-pronged approach. At the very least, I must first determine whether the child in Carter's belly is a mutant, what level of mutant, and how the X-gene appeared in the first place."
Wei En spoke up, "I'll call Charles. Although he and Erik don't have time right now, Dr. Beast is a civilian staff member, so he should have time to come over. If he agrees, I'll let Loki go pick him up."
Steve nodded, feeling that this was the only way.
Wei En asked while washing vegetables, "What did Helen go up to find you for?"
"As expected, I couldn't hide it from you. She proposed a hypothesis to us: her Doomsday spores can modify human gene sequences, and perhaps they could eliminate the mutant gene. But she hasn't tested it, so this can only be a last resort."
"What makes you feel conflicted is actually that she plans to find a disabled Epsilon-level mutant to experiment on, right?"
Steve didn't seem surprised by Wei En's mind-reading anymore. He just nodded and said, "Although I know that many Epsilon-level mutants in this world are suffering pain worse than death, that is no reason to use them as experimental subjects. Even if they agree themselves, playing with genes is a devil's game. We must be extremely cautious, otherwise, it could trigger a huge disaster."
Wei En didn't say much more. Steve was indeed a bit conservative, but this is the American comic world, and being conservative has no downsides, because many disasters on Earth were caused by those who recklessly played with genes.
During lunch, everyone ate without much appetite. Many of them had previously only regarded mutants as partners and had a more tangible sense of the powerful ones among them.
But this time, they suddenly realized that the X-gene is the devil's lottery. You can certainly choose to gamble on the ethereal possibility, gambling that your child will be born a powerful and perfect Alpha or Omega-level mutant.
But the cruel fact is, from a probabilistic perspective, it is more likely to be a Delta-level mutant with an unusual appearance but no real abilities, a Gamma-level mutant who is like a bomb with power but no self-control, or even an Epsilon-level mutant born with disabilities.
The remaining Beta-level, Alpha-level, and Omega-level mutants who have no disabilities and possess powerful abilities add up to less than one-tenth of this group. Even the craziest gambler wouldn't bet on such odds.
And Steve had to consider that he is now one of the spokespersons for Earth's image. Some of his remarks and positions could have a major impact on the situation on Earth. His attitude toward mutants would simultaneously affect both the conservatives and the radicals. If he didn't handle it well, it could needlessly increase countless casualties.
But to ask him to give up this child, he was naturally unwilling. He had always suspected that the Super Soldier Serum might have affected his fertility and the quality of his offspring. Taking a step back, if he didn't have this child, would the next one also be a mutant? Or worse, would he simply be unable to have children at all?
Steve is a relatively old-fashioned person. He always felt that he should have a stable family. He believed that taking on family responsibilities is the most important source of happiness in life, and he still hoped to have children.
And what if the second child also had problems? Carter certainly couldn't withstand two blows. At that time, both mother and child would be in danger. Even looking at the current situation, Carter might not even be able to withstand this one blow.
Therefore, before definitely seeing that this child had disabilities, neither Steve nor Carter would choose to give up.
After lunch, Wei En called Beast. Upon hearing about this situation, he took it very seriously and immediately agreed.
Loki opened a portal, but didn't return for a long time. After a while, only she returned. Steve immediately stood up anxiously and said, "What's wrong? Did something go wrong?"
"It's fine, it's just that there's a pile of precision instruments here that need to be moved over. I didn't dare use magic for fear of breaking them. Tony, send a few mechs over." ===== CHAPTER 3075 =====
