Chapter 3147: The Detective Shall Die (Part 9)
Shiler suddenly had a flash of inspiration and said, "Blood."
"What?" Greed turned to look at him.
"The Prowler seems to be able to use human blood to cover his own footprints," Shiler said. "He splits the detective's upper body and walks upside down. This way, blood will spray onto the ground as he walks."
"Similarly, he cuts off the diary owner's arms and feet and crawls forward. As he walks, the blood flowing out from behind will cover the path he came from."
Shiler actually had no evidence; this was just a bold guess, but he felt it made some sense.
"Generally speaking, blood at a murder scene will become important evidence used to judge the killer's method of attack. If there are footprints left by blood, one can naturally guess the way the killer left," the Pale Knight said. "Considering his profession as a lawyer, it is normal to understand such knowledge."
He continued, "If a killer doesn't want to expose himself, he must properly handle the large amount of blood in the human body. If he wants to move the corpse to another place without being discovered, he must either take non-bloody killing methods or wrap the corpse tightly during the dragging process."
"In summary, if you don't want to expose yourself, you must avoid bloody scenes as much as possible. But this Mr. Prowler does the opposite, either splitting people or cutting off hands and feet. This is clearly inconsistent with his goal of hiding himself, unless... this can help him hide himself."
Shiler appreciated the Pale Knight more and more. His thinking was always consistent with his own. He thought that the Pale Knight in the comic seemed to rely on drugs to suppress the virus, perhaps he could find a way to help him extend the effect of the drugs.
Shiler looked at Madeline lying in the corner again and said, "This lady said the Prowler had arrived before she died. This proves that she might be the next possession target of the Prowler. Then the question is, how will the Prowler complete his next action?"
The others were stunned because they suddenly realized that Madeline came prepared.
This researcher was not unprepared, but she still chose to commit suicide. What does this mean?
Greed immediately understood the key and said, "Her last action was suicide, but she is already dead. Will the Prowler help her complete the action of suicide? I mean, kill the Prowler himself?"
Shiler also fell into thought.
Obviously, in the worldview of this game, anomalies didn't just appear recently. Humans seem to have been coexisting with these monsters, and there is even a worldwide professional organization, the church, to deal with these monsters. They are definitely not novices, but experienced old hunters.
Then even if Madeline was a retired clergy member, she definitely wouldn't be without the power to fight back. At least Shiler didn't see much despair in her notes. She was as calm as ever.
Since it wasn't suicide caused by loss of control, it proved that Madeline did it intentionally. But what could make a firm-minded researcher pay the price of her own life?
To drive away the monster? To save the people in this village?
Shiler felt it was neither. He knew many such scientists. Many of them didn't have secular views of good and evil. They were only interested in their own research projects, and everything they did was for research results.
Suppose she exchanged her life for the Prowler's life?
In Madeline's own records, it seemed that no one had ever killed a monster in history. How to completely kill a monster was the goal placed at the highest position by every researcher. If there was a chance to practice, then paying the price of life might not be unacceptable.
"Do you think she can succeed?" Joker nudged Shiler with his elbow and asked him.
Shiler shook his head slowly.
He admitted that this spirit of sacrificing for science was moving, but Madeline seemed to have forgotten one point—monsters cannot be killed by firearms.
"Monsters cannot be killed by firearms," Main Universe Batman's thinking was almost synchronized with Shiler's. He said, "Madeline committed suicide with a handgun, and assuming the Prowler must complete her last action, the best result would be to shoot herself in the head..."
When saying this, Shiler and Main Universe Batman suddenly looked at each other.
"This is her purpose!" The two said in unison.
Shiler explained quickly, "Anyone who kills a monster with a firearm will be cursed, so what if a monster uses a firearm to attack a monster? Who will be cursed? The answer she really wants to know is this!"
"But if we didn't come, she died, and no one would witness all this," Bruce said.
"This proves she knew we would definitely come," Greed was very good at inferring such things. He said, "It seems we met here by chance, but maybe it was arranged by her. What do you think?"
"It's not impossible," Night Owl said. "The timing of us gathering here is too coincidental. Perhaps it was her who used a series of coincidences to invite us here, and then made a commotion to attract us to her side, so that we could witness the results of her experiment."
"Then what should we do?" Bruce asked.
Shiler breathed a sigh of relief. He thought in his heart that although the game's restrictions were many, the guidance of the novice process was still clear. It didn't let them face the monster directly from the start, but let them observe the research results of their predecessors, so as to better understand the existence of anomalies.
But if he walked through the novice tutorial so calmly, he wouldn't be Shiler.
"I think it's a bit dark in the room," Shiler said. "To better observe the changes in the corpse, I'll go downstairs and get the kerosene lamp."
Greed looked over at him immediately, saying with his eyes, "What are you trying to do?"
"Just in case," Shiler responded with his eyes.
Shiler went downstairs. He remembered that when he felt for the drawer key, he found that the kerosene lamp fixed on the pillar was dual-purpose and could be taken down. He unscrewed a screw at the back and took the lamp off the table.
There was still plenty of oil in the lamp, enough to last all night, but Shiler didn't just take the kerosene lamp upstairs. Instead, he opened the lid of the lamp and splashed more than half of the oil on the carpet.
Then he went to the wall where the wood was placed and threw the already split wood onto the floor of the living room, throwing it very evenly, basically everywhere.
Then he walked to the window, tore down the curtains in the living room, and piled them together with the kitchen curtains on the kitchen floor, throwing the last few pieces of wood into the pile of curtains.
He opened the back door of the house in the stairwell, then threw the animal skins hanging on the wall of the cabin's living room out into the snow through the back door. After throwing them, he didn't close the door, and the cold wind kept blowing in.
"What are you doing?" the Beyonder asked in his mind.
"I'm doing some preventive work."
"Preventing what?"
"Experiment failure."
"I remind you, this house is very remote, and it takes at least 20 minutes to walk to the next building."
"I also remind you, don't make all-wood buildings when making maps. It's easy to set fire but hard to put it out."
"You can't burn the house down, otherwise you will freeze to death on the road."
"Assuming we froze to death on the road, what about the Prowler?"
"What?"
"Why didn't the detective die?"
"What?"
"The detective's body was split in two, why could he still move?"
"What do you think?"
"Because it is very likely that there is a third restriction, that is, he can only possess living people. At least during the process of his possession, the person must be alive. Madeline shouldn't have died through either."
Shiler said quickly while tidying up, "If he must possess a living person to act, then there are only a few of us living people left within a few kilometers. If he lets us die, won't he be trapped here forever?"
Shiler didn't pay attention to the Beyonder, but walked upstairs quickly. He didn't say anything extra, just said concisely, "If anything happens later, run directly to the back door."
As soon as he finished speaking, Madeline's corpse moved.
She was only shot in the head, and every other part of her limbs was intact. After she stood up shakily, she suddenly pounced on Greed.
Greed immediately realized that it was because he was holding the revolver Madeline used to commit suicide.
"Gun!" Night Owl reminded. His intention was to let Greed throw the gun out, because only when the Prowler held the gun and shot himself could it be seen whether the curse would take effect.
But Shiler curled his lips. He let Greed search the corpse, not just because his agility attribute was high, but because anything that fell into Greed's hands, don't even think about making him hand it over.
The red die appeared again, which meant Greed had to dodge. At the critical moment, the check 26 > 23, Greed narrowly dodged.
"Want to take my things? Keep dreaming!" Greed cursed, pulled the gun directly from Night Owl's waist, stood still, aimed, and fired.
Bang! The bullet shot directly into Madeline's body.
"What are you doing?!" Night Owl was shocked. He shouted at Shiler, "Didn't you say that attacking monsters with firearms would be cursed?!"
"How would you know if you don't try?!"
"Then why don't you use your gun???"
"I'm afraid of the curse!"
As soon as Greed finished speaking, he felt a gust of wind coming toward his face. He rolled the die again, 28 > 25, and the check succeeded again.
Shiler only felt that his agility points were really high.
Greed rolled to the side and successfully dodged, and the gust of wind hit the wall directly, cutting out a sharp gap. Greed looked back and said, "It seems this is the culprit who cut the detective open."
In an instant, Madeline pounced again, and a trace of mischievous malice flashed in Greed's eyes.
*Whoosh! *
He threw the revolver out directly through the window broken by Madeline's first shot.
Madeline leaped and pounced out of the window.
"Does this count as an accident?" Bruce looked at Shiler and asked.
Shiler turned and ran downstairs, and the others followed behind him. Seeing the layout on the first floor, everyone was shocked.
Shiler didn't hesitate at all, waved his hand to let them leave from the back door, and he picked up the kerosene lamp on the table next to him and threw it directly to the ground.
With a *whoosh*, the raging fire burned up. With the flammable materials on the floor and the wooden structure of the house, the fire reached an unstoppable point in just a few dozen seconds.
Everyone ran out of the back door into the snow.
Madeline happened to fall next to them. Don't look at the second floor not being high, but Madeline didn't pay attention to her posture when she pounced out. Her leg was obviously broken.
Just then, she stood up with her hands on the ground in an extremely strange posture. Because there wasn't enough blood flowing, she had just crawled one step forward when Shiler saw a pitch-black footprint appear on the ground.
It was the shape of a goat's hoof. ===== CHAPTER 3148 =====
