Chapter 3153: The Detective Shall Die (Part 15)
He was implicitly asking about individual luck points. The Pale
"I think you could go to the riverside and take a look; perhaps getting the worst and best results would both be fine."
Schiller's words were somewhat ambiguous, but fortunately, there were no outsiders here, and as long as the other party could understand, it was enough.
In truth, he just wanted to let the Pale Knight take a gamble on a great success, or a great failure would also do; this way, he might be able to catch a fish, or see what was going on with this river.
"I think we can leave first," the Main Universe Batman said. "This river must have an end; perhaps testing at the end would be better."
Schiller thought for a moment and agreed with his suggestion. The group continued to move forward. Here, the sense of time was not obvious, but Schiller knew Batman should be counting the seconds in his heart.
They didn't know how long they had walked, but just as they were all feeling a bit tired, Schiller suddenly saw a beam of light ahead.
"Is that the exit?" Owlman narrowed his eyes and said.
Schiller suddenly reached out to stop him, because he saw shadows flickering in the light, looking a bit like reeds by a lake.
Walking a little closer, everyone saw that it was a lake ahead, with some reeds by the shore, and a glowing hole above the right side of the lake surface, which seemed to lead to the surface.
Although it didn't look much like a normal exit, it was the only clue so far, but Schiller suddenly thought of the reeds on the corpse in the kitchen.
It wasn't cold in this cavern, otherwise they couldn't have walked for so long, so the reeds here were fresher. Schiller compared the two in his mind and discovered that the reeds on that corpse might have been picked up here.
If that corpse was the owner of the diary, did he delay the time to meet with the detective because he came here to fish, which led to the tragedy of the two?
However, looking at the state of the diary owner's death, he should have successfully caught the fish and didn't die here; perhaps he had been prepared?
Schiller activated Spirit Vision and looked toward the reed marsh.
Instantly, he saw faint rays of light shining beneath the dense reed marsh, and there was something in the center of the tangled roots.
In order to see clearly what that thing was, Schiller stepped forward two paces to get closer. The moment he saw the thing clearly, he let out a muffled groan again, his eyeball feeling as if a needle had been inserted into it.
Schiller stood in place with his eyes closed, adjusting for a long time. After opening his eyes, he found that there were some blood-red traces around his field of vision, and they did not change as he turned his gaze.
His Sanity value seemed to be in a bit of danger.
However, his skills had not finished cooling down, so he could only leave it like this for the time being.
Schiller saw that the dense root system was gradually winding into the shape of a human brain.
He stepped back two paces and said to the Main Universe Batman, "Fire a shot in the direction I'm pointing."
The Main Universe Batman walked over, but he actually didn't see anything. Discovering that Schiller was pointing at the roots of the reed marsh, he frowned and said, "Water will greatly reduce the impact of the bullet; it might not necessarily hit the place you want."
Schiller estimated the distance in his heart and said, "You should be fine if you move forward about half a meter."
After speaking, he walked a few steps to the side, signaling that he would not interfere with Batman. The Main Universe Batman glanced at him, but still walked forward a few steps and raised his gun to aim.
Bang!
Splash!
Instantly, the entire reed marsh surged, just like a fierce beast hit in its vital spot. All the reeds began to grow wildly, filling the entire space of the lake within seconds.
"Run back!" Schiller shouted.
The others' reactions were also very fast. In fact, there was no need for him to shout at all; the moment the reed marsh made a move, everyone turned and ran.
The reed roots shuttled under the river surface at an extremely fast speed, occasionally darting up to try and lash out at the few of them.
But none of them were slow at running; there were no fools here who had put zero points into Strength or Dexterity. Everyone's stats were relatively balanced, so even after walking for so long, they were still able to run.
They ran all the way back, covering almost half the distance, before the reeds finally retreated.
Schiller felt that the Beyonder's "Battle Start" was already at the tip of his throat, only to be stifled back by their shameless strategic withdrawal.
Schiller laughed in his heart; he wasn't stupid. Who would want to go head-to-head with this thing that clearly wasn't on the same level as those corpses?
After the reeds retreated, the ground was covered in fish.
The reed roots had been churning in the river all the way, occasionally reaching out. There were already many fish in the river, and after being stirred up like this by the reeds, many immediately turned belly-up. Being brought to the shore by the reeds, they naturally became the squad's catch.
Bruce walked over and picked one up, but he really didn't see any difference between this and a normal fish, while the Main Universe Batman stood to the side, lost in thought.
"What should we do with these fish?" Bruce asked.
"Just leave them here," Schiller said. "It won't be too late to come back and get them when we need them. Let's continue to check that previous exit."
They walked all the way over, the fish so numerous that there was almost no place to step on the ground. When they reached the lake area, however, they discovered that the entrance to the lake zone had been blocked by dense reeds.
The reeds were covered in water, so it was unlikely they could be burned with fire, but now the only path was blocked airtight, and it seemed there was no other way but to go head-to-head.
But at this moment, Schiller suddenly pulled a sharp kitchen knife from his lapel.
Owlman, holding the flashlight, was dazzled by the cold light of the blade. Only then did he remember that the knife used to dissect the corpse in the kitchen earlier seemed to have never been put down.
Schiller took out the knife and hacked at the reeds in front of him. Reeds weren't big trees, just ordinary herbaceous plants, so it was quite easy to cut them.
Schiller hacked for a while and managed to open a path for people to pass through. He let Owlman shine the flashlight over there and found it was relatively calm.
However, it was still risky to go in at this time, because if the reeds were just pretending to be calm, and sealed off their retreat after they got close, turning it into catching a turtle in a jar, that would be a bit troublesome.
But fortunately, the hole above was still letting in light, which proved the hole hadn't been sealed. Next, it was time to compare Dexterity values.
Schiller rushed over, and sure enough, the moment he got close to the lake, the reeds moved again.
He didn't even look, rushing all the way toward the hole. The reeds under his feet grew like crazy, constantly trying to trip him, and the grass leaves in mid-air were also waving wildly; Schiller barely dodged them.
However, when approaching the hole, the red dice appeared again. Dexterity 18 > 15. Schiller reached out and grabbed the edge of the hole, and with a burst of effort, pulled himself directly up.
The others didn't wait for Schiller to succeed before starting; they all followed behind him. They had to dodge the reeds on the road based on their own reaction abilities, but here at the hole, a check was mandatory.
Joker Dexterity 22 > 15, passed.
Pale Knight Dexterity 16 > 15, passed.
Greed Dexterity 31 > 15, passed.
The three of them came up one after another, leaving only the three Batmen below. Originally, if it were based on individual ability, they should have been the fastest, but Batman is Batman; they let the others run first while they covered the rear.
Mainly, the Main Universe Batman thought this way. Bruce didn't know what kind of mood he was in, but he followed behind, and Owlman, worried about Bruce, also followed behind.
The result was that the reeds had already surged to cover the entire lake surface, and the difficulty of the Dexterity check increased sharply.
Bruce Dexterity 25 < 30, failed.
Bruce's hand had already touched the edge of the hole, but he was directly wrapped by the reeds around his legs and dragged down, smashing heavily into the wall beside him, spitting out a mouthful of blood.
Owlman Dexterity 18 < 30, failed.
Owlman didn't even have time to get close to the hole before a sharp reed leaf pierced directly through his shoulder, throwing him to the side. The smell of blood instantly permeated the air.
But there is always someone better; while the failures of Bruce and Owlman were regrettable, the luck of the Main Universe Batman was even more shocking.
Main Universe Batman Dexterity 12 < 30, critical failure.
The reed leaves, twisted into a drill, pierced through his chest. The Main Universe Batman's pupils contracted instantly.
Just then, a black shadow jumped down from the hole again, directly picked up the hunting rifle that had been knocked away, and fired a shot at the reeds behind.
Bang!
Unfortunately, the hunting rifle wasn't a shotgun; it only barely managed to beat back the leaves behind. Schiller rolled to the left, ran quickly under the leaves that were rushing over, and grabbed Owlman.
Bruce was the least injured. After being thrown against the wall, he climbed up almost immediately and sprinted toward the hole.
When he was close to the hole, Schiller had already dragged the Main Universe Batman over. The two worked together to lift the heavily struck Main Universe Batman up first, and the people above also scrambled to pull the Main Universe Batman up.
Owlman's mobility was still okay. He jumped up, one hand grabbing the edge, and the Pale Knight pulled him up hard.
Schiller used the kitchen knife to cut off two flying reeds, stepped on the reed leaves beside him to jump up, and successfully returned to the top of the hole.
Everyone escaped, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Schiller put away the knife and looked at the environment here.
Unexpectedly, this wasn't outdoors, but a small room that looked like a warehouse. The walls were curved, and various boxes were piled up against the walls, looking like daily supplies.
Schiller walked over to look and found vegetables that were relatively durable, such as onions, potatoes, and carrots, as well as butter, flour, and canned meat. Underneath were some daily necessities like toilet paper, and in another corner were two barrels of gasoline.
The others were all checking their teammates' injuries.
Bruce was the least injured, with a slight abrasion on his back. The mouthful of blood he spat out was actually because he bit his tongue when he lost his balance upon landing, which is a very common injury in such situations.
Moreover, Bruce's handling was also correct; when the tongue is injured, the blood must be spat out immediately, otherwise it is easy to choke or cause suffocation, so his condition was the best.
Owlman had his shoulder pierced by the reeds, but the reed that pierced his shoulder was very thin, and coupled with his own high stats, it wasn't a big problem after stopping the bleeding.
The one with the real big problem was the Main Universe Batman who rolled a critical failure. The reeds that pierced his chest were several twisted together, almost as thick as steel bars. Currently, although it didn't hit his heart, without first-aid measures, the bleeding alone couldn't be stopped, and his health bar was visibly dropping fast.
Schiller walked over to check the Main Universe Batman's injuries, but when he squatted down facing Batman, he clearly saw Batman's lip movements.
"You are not a doctor, who are you?"
The hand checking the wound paused. Schiller also smiled and mouthed back—"An ordinary agent."
