Chapter 3189: The Detective Shall Die (Part 51)
"Calm down, Bruce," the Pale Knight said. "Since the situation has already reached this point, we must make the most advantageous choice. I suggest we protect Greed. The supplies and equipment in his laboratory are the most useful things we can find in this village. That place is also a perfect sanctuary; relying on it, we can wear the Joker down."
"No," Greed spoke up. "Old Siltek isn't dead yet; he's just hiding. As long as you find him, you can still enter the laboratory, but you absolutely cannot deal with the Joker without Batman present."
His words made the situation, which had already become somewhat clear, blurry once again. The Pale Knight had no choice but to ask, "Where is Old Siltek?"
"To be honest, I don't know either, but I suspect the Joker has already gone to find him." Greed's tone fluctuated. "As long as we can capture Old Siltek, we will have the capital to contend with the Joker."
"But it won't be that easy," he added. "When I designed the story, I knew someone would have designs on him, so I left behind a few little surprises. If he dares to go, he will definitely suffer a great loss."
The Pale Knight paused, then probed, "That Mrs. Siltek?"
"Yes. Remember that strange incident I mentioned that happened at the university graduation dance? That was a supernatural entity captured by Old Siltek, and it is currently inside his wife. Once triggered, the Joker will surely die."
The Pale Knight felt a chill down his spine. This guy had probably calculated everything long ago. When he heard the story of the Siltek family, he naturally thought that Old Siltek was still the one in charge; therefore, as long as he could find him, he might be able to obtain richer resources than those of his son.
But he hadn't expected that when Greed designed the story, he had already considered this point. He had placed a time bomb beside Old Siltek.
Monsters could indeed be restricted, but rashly making contact without knowing the specific conditions for restriction would easily lead to the monster being released. They were all mere mortals; if they ran into a monster head-on, the chances of survival were too slim.
"So the Siltek family captured two monsters?" The Pale Knight remembered Greed saying he had captured one monster.
"I never said it was definitely the Prowler," Greed said. "The Prowler was only captured by me after the game started."
The Pale Knight widened his eyes slightly, and then he thought of the water tank he had seen in the laboratory, inside which was soaking the corpse of Doggett. They had first seen it in the small wooden cabin, and only then was it transferred to the water tank. If the Prowler was inside this corpse, then it should indeed have been captured after the game started.
"How was it captured?" he couldn't help but ask.
"The moment I landed, I saw people fleeing," Greed said with some helplessness. "It was Doggett and Madeline; they were being hunted by the corpse possessed by the Prowler."
"That corpse in the kitchen?"
"Yes. By that time, they had already run over to the reeds."
"You saved them?"
"I stopped the corpse, severed its limbs, and observed the monster's patterns."
"What are they?"
"Blood transmission. You can understand it as only being able to move within blood," Greed said. "And I happened to have a method to sever a person's limbs without making contact with blood, so it didn't successfully possess me, but was instead trapped in the corpse with severed limbs."
"Then how did it get into Doggett's body?"
"Because I met Batman; he can control corpses, and corpses with hands and feet can better transport monsters to the laboratory."
"You killed him for this?"
"Of course not. He just happened to deliver himself to my door."
"Then why didn't the Prowler inside Doggett's body hunt us down?"
"Because it was restricted. Do you remember Doggett's state of death?"
The Pale Knight naturally recalled the appearance of that corpse, and then he realized something and said, "The Prowler must have a certain amount of blood to be active. You made Doggett lose a large amount of blood in a short time, so it couldn't move?"
"It could still move. Didn't you take a hit?"
"……That was its means of attack?!"
"Otherwise? Should it have pounced on you to gnaw on you?"
The Pale Knight suddenly realized. This kind of intangible monster indeed seemed more reasonable to deal with using this kind of magic-like method. If it were a zombie siege, people might not have been so helpless.
No wonder he hadn't heard of humans using large-scale bombing to deal with monsters. This thing likely wasn't a physical attack, but a direct attack on a person's spirit, and a group attack at that; whoever looked at it would have to take a hit.
The Pale Knight had roughly figured out what was going on. Actually, it was just that Greed had arrived early enough. He had landed exactly the second after the opening introduction finished, which was when the detective was being hunted by the monster and was about to die.
His skill was Wind Blade; he went straight up and cut off the hunter's limbs, making it unable to move, and as a result, he accidentally discovered the monster's movement patterns.
Originally, he might not have intended to capture this monster, but then he met Batman. Batman had the skill to control corpses, so the two of them thought of changing the Prowler to a different corpse, restricting it, and then using the corpse-control skill to seal away the corpse containing the Prowler.
Monsters couldn't be eliminated, but as long as they could be sealed away, the crisis would basically be resolved.
"And the fish……"
"The fish were not part of my story," Greed said, lying on the ground with his eyes closed. "I suspect they might be the Joker's. The Beyonder stitched them into my story, so I just tried to see what was special about these fish, but so far, I haven't discovered anything."
This was completely beyond the Pale Knight's expectations. So, those people who ate the fish weren't test subjects of the Siltek Medical Company, but there was another hidden story? Could this be related to the Joker's backup plan?
The Joker had a backup plan, Greed had a backup plan, and Batman had a backup plan. Originally, this should have been a peak showdown, but now the scene was very awkward. Originally it was a three-legged standoff, but now it was a decisive battle at the top of the Forbidden City.
"You'd better choose Batman," Greed said. "I'm not confident I can deal with the Joker."
"I feel very sorry," Batman's voice came from the room. Schiller turned his head to look at him, and he heard Batman say, "I swear I didn't mean to fish for information from you. I was just curious, which is why I asked. If this made you feel offended, then I apologize."
"Too late," Schiller said. "The 30 seconds have already passed."
Batman said nothing more. Greed was so angry he was fuming. Even though he was already very weak, he still said, "He gave you a knife, and you actually apologize to him?! He has torn our plan to shreds!"
"Do you know why he apologized to me?"
Schiller's voice came from the darkness. Greed suddenly had a bad premonition. The next second, only a 'bang' was heard, and Owlman fell.
The Pale Knight went over to check on Owlman's condition. He felt the airflow caused by Owlman's movement, which indicated that he had wanted to dodge, but perhaps because the loss of an arm had affected his balance, he hadn't dodged in time. The bullet hadn't hit his heart, but had pierced into his lung from the side, directly causing a hemothorax. Death was only a matter of time.
"I have four bullets left," Schiller said.
Just as the Pale Knight was checking Owlman's condition, he saw a hand reach onto the Pale Knight's waist and take away the handgun.
"No! Bruce!" the Pale Knight shouted. "We cannot continue to kill each other like this!"
Bang!
The bullet reflected an eerie light in the darkness. Two dice were thrown at the same time; one determined shooting accuracy, and the other determined the probability of dodging.
Bruce's handgun shooting, Education 32 > 25, check successful.
Schiller dodging, Dexterity 28 > 25, check successful.
Everyone was shocked.
The key wasn't that Bruce fired, but that Bruce's handgun shooting check was actually Education.
"Sorry," Bruce said. "I am also an agent."
Greed closed his eyes peacefully.
But he was peaceful a bit too early.
Bang!
Schiller's handgun shooting, key item "Night Vision Goggles," no check required.
Bruce dodging, Dexterity 30 > 25, check successful.
Bang!
Bruce's handgun shooting, Education 29 > 25, check successful.
Schiller dodging, Dexterity 26 > 25, check successful.
"Enough!" Batman shouted. "You are wasting resources meaninglessly! If the Joker finds this place, we will all die! Stop immediately!"
Bang!
Bang!
Two more rounds, all checks successful. Neither of them could do anything to the other. Bruce was clearly losing his head. The Pale Knight wanted to stop him and almost took a bullet himself.
Just as Bruce was about to fire again, the Pale Knight suddenly saw a black shadow flash across one side of the corridor.
"Bruce, watch out!"
Clang!
The barrel of the handgun happened to block the sharp edge of the doorplate. Bruce dodged to the side, but it was a step too late. The doorplate slammed into his shoulder. Although it wasn't as sharp as a kitchen knife, it was much more forceful, and Bruce immediately felt dizzy.
He didn't know when, but Schiller had actually snuck over. With two people here, he had actually managed to come over!
"Damn it!" Bruce cursed.
Actually, after the first shot was fired, the next round had already begun, and among all the people who had fallen, only Batman had spoken, which meant Bruce had already made his choice.
He hadn't lost his mind; actually, he had intended to use the gunfight to distract Schiller's line of sight, so that Batman could quietly stand up and deliver a fatal blow to Schiller.
No one could handle Batman's sneak attack.
But clearly, Batman had no intention of attacking Schiller at all. He even spoke up to warn him, to tell Schiller that he had recovered.
"Truly indecisive!" Bruce cursed in his heart.
Batman's figure still appeared on the other side of the corridor. He seemed unable to endure the current situation either, and said directly, "Schiller, killing players doesn't count as real murder, which means I can attack you without reservation. You'd better consider this clearly……"
"I have considered it very clearly." After Schiller gave Bruce a hit, he didn't linger, but quickly retreated toward the stairwell, his figure soon disappearing up the stairs.
Just as Bruce was about to say something, he heard another set of footsteps slowly approaching from downstairs, heavy and eerie.
The torchlight pierced through one step after another, and the light illuminated a terrifying smiling face.
