Chapter 3300
"What?! How could Fox... Okay, I understand. I'm coming over right now."
Shiler hung up the phone, glanced out the window, and then quickly went downstairs and got into the car. Before driving, he sent a message to Jason: "Something happened to Fox, Batman will leave, I'll wait for you at the back street of Wei En Hospital."
Shiler drove to the street behind Wei En Hospital. Jason arrived a bit later than him, but he recognized Shiler's car, opened the door, and sat in, staring at Shiler with bright, piercing eyes.
"My deduction was right. After they killed Alfred, they were going to kill Fox."
Shiler held up a hand to stop him and said, "It's not that simple. Fox might have been involved in the previous arms smuggling case."
"What?"
"I mean, Batman made a deal with the Penguin to get you back from him. The Penguin asked Batman to help deal with a few people. But among these people, someone was involved in a previous arms smuggling case."
"Batman handed this job to Fox. And just at this time, something happened to Fox. He won't think someone acted to deal with him, but will only think the Penguin framed him."
Jason's expression stalled for several seconds before he sorted out the relationship. He looked at Shiler and said, "Do you think this is a coincidence?"
"It's more likely the other side took advantage of the situation," Shiler said. "Fox is Batman's most capable assistant, capable of having an even greater influence than Alfred; the other side must have wanted to act against him for a long time."
"It's just that Fox's methods were more effective, and they never succeeded. But this time, he actively involved himself in a dangerous event. The other side used his own strength against him, acted immediately, and achieved good results."
"Then doesn't that mean we can't use this incident to expose them?"
Shiler glanced at him and said, "What incident do you want to use to expose them? Alfred's death? Or Fox's injury?"
"This is clearly related. I've already investigated some clues..."
"Can you forget about Batman for a few days?" Shiler said bluntly. "I don't have time to play those little father-son games with you. I'm helping you for my own purposes, so your primary goal now is to help me, not to revolve around Batman. He's not that important."
Jason stared blankly at him.
Shiler sighed and said, "The current situation won't stop just because Batman is missing. Whether he knows the truth or not doesn't matter at all. If he wants to go crazy, let him go crazy; I don't care at all."
After speaking, Shiler took a few small capsules out of his clothes and said, "Take these, and I'll send you back to Wei En Manor."
Jason looked at the capsules warily. Shiler turned his head to look at him and said, "I'm not negotiating with you. If you don't take them, I guarantee you won't be able to do what you want to do."
Jason didn't take them in the end; Shiler put the capsules away, drove back to Arkham Asylum, and lifted the restrictions on a certain room. He shouted at the room's intercom: "Bruce, if you're not dead yet, come over here."
Bruce appeared in the office soon after. His mental state was actually quite good; he came strolling in while yawning, first poured himself a glass of water, and drank it slowly.
Shiler was annoyed just seeing him now, so he simply said, "Take some people and blow up Wei En Hospital."
Bruce spat out a mouthful of water.
"Why blow up Wei En Hospital?"
"Don't ask so many questions," Shiler appeared somewhat irritable and said, "Just say whether you're going or not."
"Fine, I'll go. Anyway, if I don't go, you'll just find someone else. Might as well be me," Bruce stretched and said, "To what extent? Blow it to the sky?"
"No need, just blow the building down, try not to hurt anyone."
"No wonder you came to me instead of the Joker," Bruce snapped his fingers and said, "Watch me."
Not long after, a loud noise came from the Cat Getan skyline. Almost everyone looked in that direction.
One of the landmarks in the center of Cat Getan City—the Wei En Hospital building—collapsed with a roar. Everyone screamed and ran outside.
Jason, who was preparing to enter the hospital to continue his investigation, was stunned. Batgirl and Nightwing, who had just obtained clues and were also preparing to go in to investigate, were also stunned.
Jason now knew what Shiler meant by "you won't be able to do what you want to do."
The hospital was gone, so where could he go to investigate clues?
As for Batman, when the building began to collapse, he had already run out carrying Fox, who was unconscious from the car accident. He was also somewhat dazed, not understanding why his own hospital had suddenly exploded.
Jason, however, clenched his fists. He avoided the crowd, picked up the phone, dialed that number, and said, "Did you do this? You lunatic! You ruined everything!"
"I put the capsules on your nightstand," the voice from the other end of the phone was flat, cold, and ruthless.
Jason knew he had no other choice.
He returned to Wei En Manor only a little faster than Batman. Listening to the footsteps coming down the hallway, Jason threw the two capsules into his mouth.
After Batman pushed open the door, he only saw Jason unconscious on the bed. He rushed over immediately, shook Jason, and discovered the other party had no reaction. He immediately called Dr. Thompkins.
Dr. Thompkins rushed over as fast as she could, but after examining him for a long time, she couldn't find the cause of the coma.
Fox and Jason having accidents one after another made her think of Jason's previous deduction.
But Batman blamed everything on the Penguin.
Because Fox had been framed and had a car accident while dealing with the people the Penguin asked him to deal with. The hospital was blown up during the rescue, and as soon as he returned, Jason also had an accident. Every single one of these things was related to the Penguin.
Batman picked up the phone and roared in anger. But the Penguin on the other end had just finished talking to Shiler, and he said confidently:
"I don't know what's going on with Fox, but Jason's coma was indeed my doing. Batman, I had to consider the possibility that you would renege on your debt, so I made a little preparation in advance."
"Listen well, I want to get my hands on that shipment from the arms smuggling case. That's exactly why I asked you to deal with those people. If I don't get the goods for one day, your little darling will remain in a coma on the bed for one day. You figure it out yourself!"
With a bang, Batman threw the phone. He covered his face with his hands and slowly sat down against the wall by the window.
After a long while, he dialed Nightwing's number.
"Dick, I need you to do me a favor using the GTO. I know James resigned, so you're in charge now. Promise me, don't let him know about this, okay?"
Nightwing hung up the phone and looked at Batgirl, saying, "Batman wants me to take some people to check the warehouse on the west side of the docks. Do you know where that is?"
Batgirl recalled for a moment and then said, "That's the Pasa Military warehouse, right? The one that produces the Hawk-16 armored combat vehicles?"
Nightwing gasped and said, "Batman wants to raid Pasa Military?! Is he crazy?"
Batgirl thought carefully for a moment and said, "Something happened to Fox, and Batman asked you to do this, which means this matter must be inseparable from Pasa Military. Let's go take a look first."
Nightwing took his people and set off, quickly surrounding those warehouses on the west side. The ordinary people at the bottom were no match for the factory security, but the factory security was no match for the well-trained and fully armed GTO. They were disarmed without much resistance.
Nightwing had seen Gordon work; logically speaking, by this step, the other side should have sent someone to negotiate. But he waited here left and right and didn't see anyone. He had to call Batman to ask what to do.
Batman didn't answer him, only telling him to wait a bit longer. After waiting for about another half hour, two cargo ships arrived at the docks. A group of people entered the factory in front of the GTO and began to move the goods out.
Nightwing didn't know whether to stop them or not. In the end, he just watched helplessly as they moved all the goods away.
The two ships transported the goods from the North Port to the South Port. And the Penguin, who had been waiting at the South Port for a long time, looked at this batch of brand-new weapons and equipment and revealed a gloomy smile.
"Got it. Warehouse 16, South Port back street. Cash on delivery."
Shiler arrived soon after, but he brought people with him. Gordon looked at the boxes of weapons and equipment in shock, almost unable to walk.
"Where did you get so many new weapons?!"
Gordon knew his stuff. These things were not civilian weapons; not only were there parts for armored combat vehicles, but there were also a large number of anti-tank weapons, trench facilities, and heavy weapons.
More importantly, these things had never been used, the packaging hadn't even been opened; one look and it was clear they had been intercepted on the way to the warehouse.
"Did you rob the National Guard?!"
"We didn't rob them," Shiler said. "Remember the previous maritime arms smuggling case? That's that batch of goods."
Gordon's eyes widened even further, and he said, "That batch of goods is in Cat Getan?! Who did it?"
"Pasa Military."
"Aren't they the ones shipping it?!"
"Dog-eat-dog," Shiler explained simply, then said, "We're old acquaintances, I'll give you a discount price. How about it?"
"I... what would I buy these things for?"
"Are you sure you don't want them?"
Gordon really couldn't be sure. He looked at the trench equipment with some envy. If he had these things, let alone the criminals and killers hired by the upper class, even a professional army wouldn't be able to break through their defenses for a while. The Lower East Side would be even safer.
"But I don't have the money..."
"Think again," Shiler said. "Think carefully."
Gordon was stunned, then reacted and said, "You mean that money from the GTO? But I've already resigned."
"You resigned from the position of Cat Getan Police Commissioner, but the GTO was an independent special unit from the police system from the beginning. You are still their highest commander."
"But in whose name should I buy them?" Gordon asked.
Shiler counted on his fingers for him: "The security situation in Cat Getan has deteriorated again, the reason for which goes without saying. So, as an anti-terrorism armed squad, you naturally need more and more professional equipment to solve these security problems."
"After buying back this equipment, you find that laying out this equipment requires a large number of people, and your manpower is seriously insufficient. So you can recruit some temporary workers to help you lay out this equipment."
"Since most terrorist attack cases occur in the Lower East Side, it's best to recruit and deploy locally in the Lower East Side."
"Terrorist attacks occur frequently in that area, and the working environment is too dangerous, so each person gets a dangerous working environment compensation of 50,000 dollars per day. Let's recruit 20,000 people for the first phase of the project."
Gordon had nothing to say.
"Wait," Gordon remembered something else and said, "How did you get the goods? You didn't raid Pasa Military's home, did you?"
"I told you we didn't raid them," Shiler shrugged and said.
Just as he finished speaking, Gordon's phone rang. After he picked it up, he only heard a roar from the other side:
"James Gordon, are you fucking crazy to surround my warehouse??!!"
Just as Gordon was about to say something, Shiler coughed and said, "Give him ten percent of the labor expenditure."
"Just ten percent?" Gordon covered the phone and whispered.
"Think again," Shiler didn't even lift his eyelids.
Gordon thought carefully, 20,000 people each compensated 50,000 US dollars, one, ten, hundred, thousand, ten thousand... that's fucking 1 billion a day!
"I'll give you half a percent at most, Gavin. Not a penny more. You damn old hyena!"
