Chapter 3422: Midnight Sons (Part 32)

~11 min read 2,141 words

"Doctor? Are you there? Can I come in?" A crisp female voice sounded at the door.

Stark, Steve, and Natasha, the three busy people, had already left, leaving only Loki, who was sitting at the dining table helping Shiler hang all the coffee cups on the cup rack according to color and size.

"Please come in, Miss."

Wanda walked in, her long red hair still fluffy and soft, loosely draped behind her head. She wore a high-necked black long dress and carried a small dark green leather bag with a silver chain, perfectly fitting the image of a witch in a fairy tale book.

Danny followed behind her, looking completely wilted, his whole person looking much more haggard, forming a sharp contrast with the radiant Wanda.

Shiler hurriedly stood up, helped Danny to the sofa to sit down, and then said, "Sorry, things happened suddenly yesterday, I had to get rid of that troublesome guy first, and could only leave you to be taken care of by one of my colleagues."

Then he introduced Wanda to Danny: "This is Ms. Wanda Lensherr, an excellent nurse and a former colleague of mine. I believe her care will help you get better faster."

Wanda acted a bit uncomfortable because she actually hadn't become a nurse yet, and she wasn't even called Wanda Lensherr, although Magneto was indeed her father, but her surname was Maximoff.

However, she did sometimes use this name, especially when some people found out she was a mutant and were unfriendly to her. Having the same surname as Magneto could save her a lot of trouble.

However, what Shiler said couldn't be considered wrong; she had indeed been a nurse in the game and had become a colleague of Shiler in the previous game. And her care had indeed helped Danny get better.

Danny nodded and said, "Yes, this lady sent me to the hospital; I haven't had a chance to thank her yet."

"Then what is this..."

"I found that I can't control myself either," Danny sighed very frustratedly, "Maybe I'm no different from Johnny; we are both monsters working for the devil."

Shiler tilted his head and looked at Danny with a somewhat complex gaze. If you say he's stupid, he's not the kind of person who uses double standards; as soon as something happened to him, even before it caused any harm, he started reflecting on himself.

But if you say he's smart, he's completely different from Johnny; it's just that he was affected by Dario and showed symptoms of losing control, and he felt he had no position to blame Johnny anymore.

At this time, Ms. Francis appeared again, pointing at Danny's nose and saying, "Do you intend to just give up like this, Danny? Is this what I taught you? You are not the kind of person who gives up on himself; you can completely control the devil in your heart; you have such power. Now is not the time to give up!"

"You and your brother are the only Ghost Riders on Earth, and only you can stop him. If you give up now, then who can stop him when he works for Mephisto and kills more people? This is your responsibility; you must take it on."

Shiler had already seen some problems between this mother and son. Ms. Francis's desire for control was too strong, and Danny had been taught to have no opinions of his own. Shiler even suspected that the ghost of Ms. Francis now was just something Danny had fantasized about because he couldn't accept the fact after his mother passed away.

If it were an ordinary person, of course, it would be impossible, but Danny was a Ghost Rider after all, and the Spirit of Vengeance in his body was quite special. It was said that when he died, it even attracted angels to intervene, so it was possible for such a bizarre situation to occur.

"Alright, Ms. Francis," Shiler hurriedly persuaded, "Danny doesn't intend to give up; maybe his soul is just unstable, he's a bit tired, and needs to rest. Right, Wanda?"

Wanda saw Shiler's look and hurriedly nodded, saying, "Yes, his spirit is very exhausted and needs a good rest."

"I can prescribe some sedative drugs for you; there is a lounge right here, go have a good sleep, and you'll be fine when you wake up." Shiler went to write a prescription and asked Wanda to take Danny to the lounge.

After writing the prescription, Shiler went to the basement to get the medicine. When he returned, Wanda had already poured warm water, helped Shiler give the medicine to Danny, and even coaxed him into taking it.

"God, I don't know how much easier my life would be if my psychological clinic had an assistant like you," Shiler praised Wanda with a smile.

"Really?" Wanda was obviously very happy, and she said, "I'm currently studying nursing psychology; are the results obvious?"

"Of course, you being able to bring him here safely is already a milestone success. When you finish your nursing exam, I'll be waiting for your resume."

There was a girlish excitement in Wanda's eyes, and she said, "If you're willing to let me work, then hospitals all over New York should accept me. By then, I'll have to pick and choose carefully."

"Promise me, Stephen and I have priority, okay?"

Wanda laughed happily, shook her hair, and walked to the dining table. Loki stood up to pull out a chair for her and also gave her a smile.

"For the sake of the friendship between Earth and Asgard, perhaps Asgard should also have an opportunity to recruit excellent talent. Miss, what do you think?"

Wanda burst into loud laughter, and after laughing for a while, she said, "It's really hard to imagine that you two are still single. I really don't know how many girls you've rejected who were swooning over such sweet talk."

Loki smiled and sat opposite, saying, "Certainly not more than the number of men swooning over your beauty."

Shiler walked to the kitchen to pour her coffee, and while operating the machine, said, "Jarvis must have been infinitely grateful that he molded such a handsome face for himself when he was shaping his body. I dare say this was his own idea; if Tony had molded it, it would definitely have been a disaster."

Wanda seemed to imagine that scene and laughed again, choking halfway through. At this time, the hot coffee was just placed in front of her, at the sweetness and temperature she liked.

"My God, Doctor, I really don't know how you can be so considerate," Wanda sighed, "Before meeting you, I hadn't even drunk hot coffee; it was always warm or half-cold."

Then she said somewhat sentimentally, "You are so good to me, is it because I am your friend, or because... I am very dangerous, and if I lose control, Earth might be in trouble?"

Shiler's fingertips paused, and he asked, "Has someone said that to you? At the community college you attend?"

Wanda scratched her hair and said, "Not really, I just suddenly thought of it... forget it, pretend I didn't ask."

"This is a very complex question, Miss. When I asked for your help yesterday, were you simply wanting to help your friend, or did you feel that if you didn't help me, it would be dangerous for me to use other methods to achieve my goal, and it would endanger the peaceful life you have now?"

Wanda blinked and said, "I didn't think that much."

"Then why did you give me the car keys?"

"Because you needed help."

"What if it were a stranger?"

Wanda thought seriously for a while, then shook her head and said, "I wouldn't lend my car to a stranger because they really might use my car to commit a crime. There are too many such things."

"If they did that, the police would trace it back to me, and I'm a mutant, so they would think I'm highly suspicious, take me back to the police station for investigation, and wouldn't care what my neighbors think. When I come back, the neighbors would point fingers, as if saying 'I knew this kind of person would commit a crime sooner or later.' They might unite to drive me out of the community, and then I would have to move, and my peaceful life would be ruined again."

Wanda said this series of things so fluently that it was clear she had experienced it many times. Loki couldn't help but look at her with sympathetic eyes.

"Then what about me? Why did you think I wouldn't use your car to commit a crime?"

"Because there's no need; you can... I mean, you don't need to specifically borrow my car to commit a crime, right?"

Shiler laughed and said, "In fact, I drove your car at high speed for twenty minutes yesterday while being chased by police cars, and even PIT-maneuvered a stretch Lincoln."

Wanda opened her mouth slightly in surprise, but immediately said, "That must have been because you encountered an unexpected situation and had to do so. Of course, if there wasn't an emergency, you wouldn't have had to borrow the car."

"What if the police come looking for you, what will you do?"

Wanda was slightly nervous but didn't look very anxious; she swallowed and said, "Jarvis has been keeping an eye on the community's police system; if the police come, he will tell me in advance. I'll just say my car was stolen; they probably won't do anything to me."

"What if you have to move again?" Shiler seemed to be testing Wanda's bottom line, constantly saying pessimistic guesses.

"Then move," Wanda pursed her lips and said, "It's not like I haven't moved before; I'm very good at finding houses."

"Then what about community college? The courses are interrupted, and your exam time might be pushed back again. The children are getting bigger and will get more and more noisy; do you still have the energy to continue studying and taking exams?"

Loki couldn't help but nudge Shiler with his elbow, telling him not to provoke Wanda anymore. But Shiler had no intention of giving up, his eyes staring straight at Wanda.

Wanda avoided his eyes but could still feel his straight gaze. Shiler's gaze clearly put a lot of pressure on her; her body began to tilt toward the side without Shiler.

"It will pass," Wanda said, "Maybe I can go to the Andromeda Galaxy; the professors will welcome us, probably."

Suddenly, the pressure disappeared. Wanda realized she was covered in cold sweat, her fingertips were trembling, and her chest was caving in, as if something had been slowly dug out, and only now did she realize the pain.

Then she was a bit dazed, looking down at her hands, and then blankly looked up at her surroundings.

Shiler sat in place wiping the cup, and Loki was pouring himself a second cup of coffee. The calm and chaos of the streets of Brooklyn outside the small clinic drew graffiti of late autumn in New York.

No shocking red light, no explosions, no screaming, no ruins, and no self who suddenly realized she had ruined everything.

She turned to look at Shiler, and Shiler smiled at her and said, "I apologize for my offense, but I am also a person who occasionally wants to get emotional support from friends. Thank you for being willing to pay so much for me, even if it was just in a hypothesis."

The moment Wanda's shoulders relaxed, an unnamed fire flared up. She grabbed the bag next to her and threw it at Shiler.

"No wonder your mouth is so sweet today! You actually drove my car to lead the police on a chase! That's my newly bought car! I said I felt the bumper was a bit crooked when I was driving today! Damn Jarvis actually cooperated with you to hide it from me!!!"

Wanda's roar echoed in the clinic. Loki gave Shiler a helpless look. Shiler just put the bag aside and said, "But I really filled it up with gas for you; it cost me over 100 dollars."

Wanda suddenly stopped and said in shock, "Over 100?! But I clearly still had half a tank of gas. Did New York's gas prices rise again?!"

"Yes, even though oil prices have fallen, New York's gas prices have been rising. You'd probably have to ask some monopolistic energy companies how much money they need to earn before they're satisfied."

"Damn vampires!" Wanda cursed, "New York State's gas prices have risen to second in the federal government! It's more than 30% higher than this time last year! What exactly do they want!!!"
