Chapter 3797
The Arkham Batman feels that Owlman is acting a bit strange.
The first class this morning is Magic Theory. The professor specifically emphasized to them that today they would be teaching very important content: the engraving of magical runes and the channeling of magical power. Every Batman is very interested in this and is listening very attentively, but Owlman is frequently losing focus.
During the break, the Arkham Batman turns his head to look at the Prime Universe Batman and says, "What have you done to him? It's only been two days, how is he already so distracted?"
The Prime Universe Batman smiles with pursed lips, saying nothing. Of course, he knows why Owlman is so distracted; it's because he thinks he has been cursed.
After a few days of study, most of the Batmen have gained a certain understanding of magic. Precisely because of this, they know that curses are real and even more magical than they had imagined. Powerful dark mages don't even need to prepare anything to curse a stranger they have never met. All kinds of dark magic curses are also very powerful; some can cause people to suffer severe injuries, some can make people distracted, and some can even kill people directly.
When deciding to use the movie set to deal with Owlman, the Prime Universe Batman had already thought out the entire plan.
To get this cunning and evil guy into the trap, ordinary methods wouldn't work. The mechanism in that secret room might be fine in a movie, fitting the intelligence level of the young mages who are the protagonists and being friendly to the audience's IQ, but it is too simple for Batman.
Even if the Prime Universe Batman upgraded the door lock to a smart lock, it still felt a bit out of place, not at all like something created by an extremely cunning dark mage capable of causing trouble right under the nose of the Sorcerer Supreme.
The Prime Universe Batman doesn't know the script, so he isn't quite sure if this secret room was really made by Saphir or if there is some other hidden story. Anyway, he personally feels it isn't very logical, so he changed the script on his own.
In his setting, this secret room is actually not Saphir's true stronghold at all. He deliberately created such a place in the castle and put up very shallow puzzles to trap the Sorcerer Supreme.
He applied a very powerful curse to his own notebook; once infected with this curse, one wouldn't have long to live. His goal was to trick the Sorcerer Supreme into coming in so he could use the curse to kill him.
Although this method isn't considered very clever, it is at least ruthless, and it barely fits Saphir's character profile, leaving Owlman no choice but to believe it.
Now, he probably already thinks he has truly been cursed and has lost all initiative, leaving him no choice but to cooperate with Saphir. But Saphir is slow to come find him, and apart from sending a letter to mock him, he has vanished like he evaporated into thin air, with no further news. How could Owlman not panic?
Although the Batmen learn magic very quickly, they are still a certain distance away from being true masters, not to mention that curses are a very obscure magical technique. Both casting and breaking curses require specialized study; there is no such course in the school, and the Batmen have no way to learn specific knowledge. Owlman himself has absolutely no way to deal with the curse.
And then came the Prime Universe Batman's second stage—given that Saphir is ignoring him, there is no professor in the school proficient in curses, and the curse could break out at any time, who would Owlman go to when he has to treat a dead horse as if it were alive?
After the Prime Universe Batman and the Arkham Batman finished lunch, they went together to the top of the east tower to look down. Sure enough, they spotted Owlman walking in a hurry on the covered bridge. His direction was clearly the school infirmary.
"He really went to find Dr. Schiller," the Arkham Batman couldn't help but exclaim. "Now the doctor will be even more annoyed with him."
"Let's go, we also need to get more done while he's away," the Prime Universe Batman said.
Owlman almost slammed open the door to the school infirmary. When Schiller walked out of his office, he thought he had gone crazy.
"What's wrong with you?" Schiller opened the magic barrier and let Owlman in.
Owlman paused, knowing he was acting too abnormally and would easily be detected by Schiller, so he tried hard to suppress the churning emotions in his heart and said, "I feel a bit uncomfortable."
"I checked you just yesterday, there's nothing wrong with your body." Schiller turned and walked into the ward. Two new students were suffering from vomiting and diarrhea due to not adjusting to the environment, and he had to prescribe them some anti-diarrheal medicine.
"But I really feel a bit..." Owlman wasn't faking it this time. Ever since he learned he had been cursed, he felt uncomfortable all over.
"That still requires waiting your turn." Although Schiller's tone remained gentle, it was clearly a bit impatient. He said, "This is highly likely a psychological problem. You go to the office and wait for me first; I'll talk to you after I finish prescribing medicine for them."
Owlman had no choice but to enter the office. He was on pins and needles for those few minutes, counting every seam in the floorboards. After a while, Schiller finished prescribing the medicine and walked in, feeling like Owlman was about to lose it.
He sat down opposite Owlman and said, "Relax, I can hear your anxious voice clearly through the wall. Tell me, what exactly is going on?"
"I... do you think there is anything abnormal about me?"
"I already said, you are abnormally anxious right now. Is there a problem with your studies? Or are you not getting along well with your classmates?" Schiller had actually determined long ago that it was the latter, and he knew who the culprit was; he could even roughly imagine what methods they had used. What he couldn't understand was why Owlman would come to find him—didn't he look like he wasn't on the same side as the Prime Universe Batman? How was this any different from a sacrificial pig rushing into a butcher's house?
"I'm not anxious," Owlman said. "I feel like something is wrong with my body. Can you help me check?"
Schiller pretended to take out a stethoscope. In fact, he was very familiar with this process because Stark would also have physical reactions when his anxiety was at its worst. Even if he could ascend to become an Iron God, he would spend a whole night suspecting that cancer cells were rapidly multiplying in his body, even showing symptoms of early-stage cancer. So Schiller also learned some internal medicine diagnostic methods.
Of course, he only learned the surface level, which was just using a stethoscope to listen to heart rates, checking the fundus, tapping knees, and so on.
Just as he was about to execute this process, Owlman shouted and said, "I'm not talking about this. I mean... don't you know any magical methods?"
This stumped Schiller. He really didn't. He himself was dragged into being the school doctor by Strange; if one had to say he had any use, it was probably using the Gray Mist as a final insurance policy, but if one really wanted to talk about magical treatment methods, any professor pulled from here would be better than him.
However, out of consideration for responsibility, Schiller still asked the Gray Mist in his heart: "What's wrong with him?"
"He's fine," the Gray Mist said. "His body is quite healthy, I didn't find any problems."
Schiller didn't want to expose the Gray Mist in front of Owlman, so he cleared his throat and said, "I said, I checked you before, there's no problem."
"Checked with magic?"
"Yes." Schiller nodded. He couldn't be considered lying; the Gray Mist is an Outer God and belongs to the mystical side, just like magic.
"Then why don't I feel anything?"
"Uh, magic is like this, it doesn't require as many instruments as scientific examinations." Schiller recalled the scene of Wanda checking others and said, "Just a casual wave of the finger will do."
Owlman was skeptical. He said, "That was also checked yesterday. Can you check me again today?" Because he encountered that letter last night, the results of the previous check definitely didn't count. So he wanted Schiller to check him with magic again to see if there was a curse in his body.
"This..." Schiller thought for a moment. He felt that Owlman might have been trapped by the Prime Universe Batman and the others; the other side might have used some small tricks, causing him to be so anxious now.
But based on Schiller's understanding of Batman, a typical Batman wouldn't do something like poisoning someone, except for Bruce.
So, the check probably wouldn't find anything, but if he said there wasn't one, the other side would definitely be even more anxious. Although he stood on the opposite side of him, whether for the sake of the school doctor's duty or to prevent Owlman from jumping over the wall like a dog, Schiller had to alleviate Owlman's anxiety.
So he nodded and said, "Stand up."
Owlman stood up. Schiller said to the Gray Mist in his heart: "Help my eyes flash a light."
Owlman stared closely at Schiller's movements, and then he discovered a mysterious light flash in his eyes, after which his expression changed slightly.
"Sit down first," Schiller said.
"How is it?" Owlman asked.
"Did you eat something bad recently?" Schiller chose the safest way to ask. After all, Batman also has to eat, and the reason that illness enters through the mouth is the best.
"So you're saying there is a problem?"
"I can't say there's absolutely none, it's just that I can't quite understand it," Schiller sighed and said. He still maintained that principle—try not to lie in front of Batman. What he said could also be considered a fact; without the help of the Gray Mist, his eyes aren't X-rays, so of course he couldn't understand it.
Owlman's heart slowly sank. He leaned forward, staring at Schiller's eyes and said, "Do you know what the abnormality is?"
Hearing him ask this, Schiller knew that the Prime Universe Batman had indeed taken action. He must have used some method to make Owlman feel that he had a problem, just not knowing what his follow-up plan was. Schiller decided to gloss over this matter.
"I said, I can't understand it," Schiller shook his head and said, "In terms of magic, I am good at preparing potions, and I don't have any profound attainments in other aspects, so I'm afraid I can't help you."
The change in Owlman's expression was somewhat obvious, and it was hard for Schiller to ignore it. As expected of the Prime Universe Batman, playing against him is truly high-pressure, and Owlman really knows how to pick an opponent.
Owlman left somewhat dejectedly. However, when he walked out of the office, he saw that magic plant and animal guide on Schiller's desk. He just glanced at it and didn't care, because Schiller had already said he would prepare potions, so it was perfectly normal to need to check the raw material guide.
Suddenly, Owlman seemed to think of something. He quickened his pace, returned to the library at the fastest speed, opened the secret room, and took away Saphir's notebook.
He remembered that in the Magic Theory class, the professor mentioned that curses require a medium. The caster and the victim may have never met, but they can establish a connection through some items. This item that connects the two is the medium of the curse. The medium is not the victim's personal belongings as ordinary people imagine, but some very rare magical materials. The more vicious the curse, the more evil the materials required.
If he couldn't start from the curse, then he could investigate from the medium. Saphir had already written in the letter that only those who touched the notebook would be cursed, which meant the medium might be on the notebook.
Owlman looked at the notebook left and right, but didn't see anything special. He thought that some very special materials might only show their effects under specific light, so he turned off the lights in the dormitory. Once the lights were off, blue fluorescent marks actually appeared on the cover of the notebook, and these marks formed a very complex magic circle. Owlman's eyes widened instantly.
At the same time, Strange, who came to the library to open the secret room, looked at the empty table and was a bit confused: "Where is the notebook the props team put here?"
