Chapter 4248
Another night. The only difference is that a few small figures are flickering through this dead-silent town. The agent, possessing the body of a puppet, nimbly slides down the drainpipe and jumps directly onto the second-floor balcony.
This is Derby's house. After some investigation, the agent found the place where this former pastor lived. He knows there must be some clues here. While the evil spirit is preoccupied, he must hurry over to search.
Although this body is small and agile, the problem is that it is a bit too small; its speed is slow, and walking is quite laborious. The agent spent a great deal of effort climbing onto the desk, and then he discovered that this guy actually has quite a few books in his home.
You must know that this cult opposes modern education, and besides the holy scriptures, nothing else is allowed to be read. Regardless of whether it is a newspaper or a magazine, even flyers are not permitted to appear. Yet, this pastor's home hides quite a few books.
It cannot be called hiding, either. He just placed the books on the desk quite openly. Moreover, many of the books have signs of being flipped through. The agent checked briefly and discovered they are all books on politics and economics. This is even stranger.
In the United States, ordinary non-professionals do not read professional books because there are too many technical terms in them, making them difficult to recognize fully. The agent also discovered that although these books have signs of being flipped through, they basically stop at the beginning. That is to say, they didn't read many pages before stopping; it is estimated that they couldn't read on.
Then he came near the desk drawer. The agent jumped in and discovered that there is actually an expensive fountain pen set inside. This is still understandable; after all, he belongs to the upper echelons of the church, so it is normal to have money. However, it is a bit strange that such a luxury item is a fountain pen.
Fountain pens are normal as gifts, but precisely because they are too normal, they appear abnormal in this very sinister town. In a sect that has no schools at all and opposes any education, who would give a fountain pen as a gift?
Arriving at the second drawer, the agent opened it and saw several letters. He opened one of them and took a look; it was written on it: "Dear son Derby, I have good news to tell you. Your father will soon be transferred to the Utah State Legislature..."
The agent's eyes widened instantly. Good heavens, this Derby actually has quite a background; he is actually the son of a legislator. He flipped through a few more letters. The dates of the letters became earlier and earlier, and they also revealed more information.
It turns out this guy is the illegitimate son of a former city councilor and current state legislator. The specific reason is very complicated; it seems the town mayor sent a girl from the town to the legislator for bribery, and then she unfortunately became pregnant, eventually giving birth to Derby.
And it seems that because this legislator has no other offspring, Derby is quite valued. This cheap father of his would even send him books and pens. Moreover, the upper echelons of the town all know Derby's background, and no one goes out of their way to make things difficult for him.
This letter didn't write any important content. The agent knows there is definitely more to it than this. He searched around the study again, and after not discovering any important intelligence, he turned to the bedroom, and then discovered another letter under the pillow.
"Dear son, before I am transferred, there is one most important matter that must be completed. That former circus actor Borger got involved with Legislator Hoss's daughter. That stupid girl told him about the discharge matter, and now he has become suspicious. I absolutely cannot let this matter become a stain on my term. You must think of a way to protect our family. I know to what extent your relationship with him has deteriorated; without us, he will definitely make you die very miserably."
Seeing this, the agent knew that this pair is also a plastic father-son relationship. But this clue brought a very important truth, which is that their previous speculation was correct—old Borger really knew about the water pollution matter.
His face is indeed useful; although he has entered old age, he is still a handsome old man. Added to the fact that it can be seen in the memories that his personality is quite likable, it is perfectly normal for someone to pursue him. And a certain legislator's daughter revealed this matter to him.
This Derby, for some reason, has a very bad relationship with old Borger. The agent guesses it might be because this Derby, relying on having a good father, completely does not follow the rules of the sect set by old Borger. Even though he is a pastor, he doesn't set any good leading example at all. In the eyes of old Borger, who values the sect so much, this is a thorn in his side, and he must be eliminated quickly.
And now old Borger knows that these bastards in the city council have been poisoning the entire town. Then he will definitely take Derby as the first target. This letter appears to be a threat, but in reality, it is a reminder, because Derby has no other choice—if he doesn't kill old Borger, the other party will kill him.
Now it seems that the contest between the two should have been won by Derby. But actually, it is also quite strange; after all, old Borger practiced black magic, so there is no reason he couldn't beat Derby. However, judging from Peter's description, old Borger's black magic wasn't mastered either, and added to the fact that he is an old man, it is normal that he couldn't beat the younger Derby.
However, it is more likely that the town mayor and Derby are of one mind. Although old Borger is the sect leader, the town mayor has people and guns in his hands. Old Borger cannot fight four hands with two fists.
And after Derby finished off old Borger, he discovered his research into black magic. It is also possible that old Borger fought back desperately, not hesitating to expose his practice of black magic just to finish off Derby. Anyway, in the end, Derby inherited the black magic legacy and also started doing things like evil magical artifacts.
However, according to what Peter said, that magic array in the air-raid shelter was made by old Borger. Now it seems it should have been a last resort. Old Borger might have wanted to rely on that thing to transform his life form and then go for revenge. But unfortunately, he was finished off by someone else before he succeeded, and in the end, it benefited Derby instead.
The agent is inclined to believe that Derby knew the function of that magic array. He did it on purpose, tricking the other pastor, Famino, over, sacrificing him, and then transforming himself into an evil spirit.
However, there are still two doubts that have not been resolved. That is, why did Binger and the others in the town enter a spiritual world, and why did they also gain the ability to possess like evil spirits?
The agent guesses this shouldn't have been done by Derby. Although he seems to have become an evil spirit, ruling the entire town, it can be seen that he has no way to completely control the spiritual world, otherwise there wouldn't be so many things happening that were beyond his expectations.
More importantly, the agent trusts the judgment of the Hunter. The Hunter said that that thing cannot be considered a person, but is like a kind of concept. And the evil spirit that Derby transformed into is too personified.
Most importantly, the agent feels that the evil spirit Derby transformed into is really a bit weak and not worth the Hunter being so serious. There must be something else.
Thinking of this, the agent decided to set off for the church basement. That place might hide the final secret of the town. But the trouble is, after so long, no matter how weak Derby is, he should have found a way to deal with the seal.
They are all puppets now, with almost no physical combat power; solving that evil spirit might be very difficult, and they can only rely on the few people still alive in reality.
The agent's guess was correct. After the curse on the arm spread to the chest, the two forces conflicted with each other, and that nail deeply embedded in the chest is gradually losing its effect.
The evil spirit returned to look for Kent's corpse, but didn't find it. Therefore, he could only go back to control Aunt Kane's corpse, which he had abandoned. After all, without a human corpse, and even the puppet was snatched away, this is the only body he can barely use.
The evil spirit is very clear that with the situation developing to this point, it is impossible to break them one by one as before, or to make them kill each other. He must think of some other way. The evil spirit did not return to the spiritual world, but instead borrowed Aunt Kane's body and walked toward the church.
On the way, he looked up at the sky. At dusk, the sky was gloomy. If nothing unexpected happens, tonight will be a night without a moon.
And Bruce and the others are also heading to the church. After Binger told them about the mysterious object beneath the church, they also believed that secrets might be hidden within it and needed to go over to investigate.
And just as they passed Aunt Kane's house, they saw Linda's figure flash past behind the house.
Bruce instinctively felt something was wrong. He walked over and saw Linda fiddling with the car they had driven over.
"Linda, where are you going?!" Bruce asked.
Linda sat in the driver's seat and smiled at the puppet he was possessing. She said, "I don't know how to drive; can you teach me?"
"I..."
"I'll teach you." Kate stood out, then turned her head and said to the other companions, "You go ahead; I'll be there shortly."
Bruce couldn't help it and could only take the others and leave first. And Linda picked up the puppet Kate was possessing from the ground and sat back in the driver's seat. She still appeared a bit clumsy, but looked very excited.
"Here are the car keys; you have to start the car first. Then prepare to shift gears, and then step on the gas..."
Linda took a few deep breaths, appearing very nervous. But she suddenly turned her head to look at Kate and said, "Aren't you going to ask where I'm going?"
"That's your freedom," Kate said, "If you have nowhere to go, then go to New York. You are my cousin; you can stay at my house."
Linda revealed a brilliant smile at her.
The few people arrived at the church entrance and ran into the agent. The few small puppets looked at each other, all feeling somewhat helpless.
"I don't think we can beat the evil spirit like this." Bruce said.
"His body isn't that healthy either." Peter said, "A mummy isn't necessarily sturdier than a puppet. Besides, I made some small props; at least I can knock him down temporarily."
"If it really doesn't work, then seal it up again." The agent said, "And then think of a way to slowly solve it."
"Compared to this, I think that thing under the church is a bigger problem." Binger said, "I have a bad premonition."
Binger's premonition soon came true. Because this time after they went down to the church basement, what appeared was not the small rooms from before, but an extremely empty, dark room.
Music sounds faintly came from the depths of the darkness. Bruce listened intently, then was stunned. He said, "How does this sound like... rock music???"
The music sounds coming from the darkness were completely not the eerie and ethereal music they had imagined, but very intense rock music.
They followed the sound of the music and walked closer, then smelled a rich fragrance. The agent gently sniffed his nose and said, "Coffee."
Immediately after walking a bit closer, they finally reached the light. They saw a figure sitting at a table, listening to the rock music on the radio, tasting coffee, and leisurely flipping through a magazine on the table.
Appearing under the dim light was a pale face. When he raised his eyes, a pair of slightly unfocused gray pupils looked over. The crowd retreated two steps in unison.
"The way you set up this light, I thought you were the mastermind behind the scenes." The agent said irritably, "What are you doing here?"
"Of course, waiting for people." The Hunter said, "We divide the work and cooperate. You go solve that idiot who is rushing over; leave the real mastermind behind the scenes to me."
"Who is the real mastermind behind the scenes?"
The Hunter just silently took a sip of coffee and didn't continue speaking.
At the same time, a motorcycle stopped at the entrance of the Westview Police Station. A tall figure approached the police station. Kent looked around with some vigilance.
"Hello, is there anything I can help you with?" a police officer asked.
"I want to find the sheriff." Kent said, "I have some things to hand over to him. Could you please ask him to come out for a moment?"
