Chapter 4255: Spirit Possession (Part 37)
That police officer froze for a moment. He looked Kent up and down. Kent hadn't changed his clothes, nor had he cleaned himself up properly. He had been crawling around in that basement earlier, getting covered in dust and dirt. Logically speaking, the police station basically wouldn't receive such people, because this was very likely a junkie who had hallucinated from being high. And he wanted to see the sheriff as soon as he came up, which was indeed very strange.
However, Kent was so handsome that his dusty and dirty appearance now had a unique flavor. The only superpower the system couldn't sanction was being handsome. The officer truly couldn't believe that someone who looked this handsome could be a crazy person high on drugs.
He opened his mouth, but still didn't say anything. After a pause, he said, "The sheriff has gone out on patrol, why don't you wait."
"Okay." Kent didn't say anything else and sat on a chair in the reception hall. The officer didn't know if it was lust or stupidity, but he even poured Kent a glass of water and said, "You have things to hand over to the sheriff, what are they?"
"Some clues to a case, we had an appointment before." Kent said, "But before I came, my friend ran into some trouble. The car got stuck in the mud, and it took us a long time to get it out. Otherwise, we wouldn't have missed the agreed time."
The officer suddenly realized and said, "So that's how it is. But I haven't heard that the sheriff had an appointment with anyone."
Kent looked left and right, lowered his voice, and said, "I'm a reporter."
The officer looked at him with some shock, and after sizing him up again, said, "You certainly look like someone from a big city. Where are you from? Los Angeles?"
"I'm from the East Coast, I won't reveal which city specifically. Don't ask too much either, otherwise, you're just looking for trouble for yourself."
The officer nodded and walked back to his position. He already believed what Kent had said. Mainly, people like Clark Kent really didn't look like poor people.
You have to know, Kryptonians are invulnerable, so even if he worked farm labor for a lifetime, he wouldn't leave a single callus on his hands. Being exposed to wind and sun in Kansas wouldn't really blow him into a redneck either. His skin was delicate and lustrous, his hair was black and shiny without hair loss, his back was straight, his face was handsome, and his eyes were firm. For ordinary humans, such an appearance required a large amount of money and time to maintain. So even if he looked a bit disheveled now, one could still see from these details that he must have been pampered.
As for why the sheriff would have an appointment with an East Coast reporter, that wasn't something a small intern cop like him could ask. However, the more vaguely it was stated, the more room there was for imagination. Police meeting reporters usually meant nothing good; if he asked too much, the one who would be unlucky would be himself.
After a while, the sheriff returned. He froze for a moment after seeing Kent. Kent stood up, took the initiative to walk up and shake hands with the sheriff, and said, "Hello. I sent you an email before. Regarding the groundwater system, I think we can talk more. I've brought what you wanted. Shall we go to the office and talk in detail?"
The sheriff narrowed his eyes immediately. Kent not only didn't avoid his gaze but stared tightly into his eyes. The sheriff pursed his lips, and after a long while, finally walked into the police station and said, "Follow me."
Entering the sheriff's office, the sheriff sat down, poured himself a cup of coffee, sighed helplessly, and said, "When that new kid headed that way, I knew nothing good would come of it. Tell me, what exactly happened."
Kent paused, but still took a ring out of his bosom and placed it on the sheriff's desk. He keenly captured the moment the sheriff's pupils shrank.
That wasn't a very expensive diamond ring, just an ordinary silver ring band. On the inside of the band was engraved a surname, "Stewart," and the badge hanging on the left side of the sheriff's uniform was exactly written "Sheriff Stewart."
He reached out both hands and carefully picked up the ring. Kent could see his fingertips trembling slightly, and his Adam's apple was also moving up and down. But then, as if thinking of something, he threw the ring onto the desktop.
He shook his head, then leaned back and said, "No matter what you want, I can't give it to you. That's not a matter for you or me, do you understand?"
"I certainly understand. But, how are you going to let your new wife accept that you just gave up on her and the child in her belly?"
The sheriff clenched his fists suddenly. He looked up and stared fixedly at Kent. Kent nodded and said, "She is pregnant. But the child didn't get to be born. Both of your children died with her in a dark and damp basement. I can't see the cause of death, I only know that all her limbs were broken, and there was a deep wound on the child's skull..."
"Enough!" The sheriff stood up with a "swoosh" and said, "What do you want me to do?! When she went missing, I tried every possible method. But... but..."
He stood in place and took a few heavy breaths, then sat down on the table powerlessly and said, "I know you might find it hard to believe, but what we are fighting is not humans, but real devils. They are everywhere. Compared to them, we are too weak and can't do anything."
"I'm not here to blame you either." Kent also sighed and said, "I know you are the one who least wanted this kind of thing to happen. After all, your new wife and child died there, so you can be considered one of the victims. And that thing is indeed very difficult to deal with; even if you are a sheriff, I'm afraid you can't do much more."
"I came here to find you to tell you two things. First, your wife knows you are very self-reproachful. She wants to tell you it's okay. And she entrusted me to bring this ring back. Second, what I need is very little and absolutely does not exceed your capabilities. After I leave, you can completely pretend I never came. Anything that happens afterward has nothing to do with you. How about it?"
The sheriff took a deep breath, placed his hands on the table, leaned forward, and looked at Kent, saying, "I know you must be a big-city person. Coming to our small place, there are too many things you can't stand. You will try your best to solve them, and you might have helped many people. That gave you the illusion that you can punish evil and promote good. But the matter regarding that town is completely different."
"For so many years, I don't know how many people have entered the town in the name of all sorts of things. Just like the new officer from before. His wife had relatives living in that town, so they went over, and then they never came back."
"At first, I would remind them as much as possible. But this had no effect at all. Later I understood, if I acted willfully, I would certainly die."
"I admit I am a very cowardly person. My wife and child died in the town, but I couldn't even manage to investigate the truth. I watched so many innocent people disappear in the town, but I didn't dare to make a sound. I don't want to make excuses for myself, but since I was a child, I knew that living in such a small place, there are too many things you have to follow. If you don't cover your eyes, many things more terrifying than death will find you. I don't want to become like that."
Kent realized that this sheriff must know a lot of things, he just didn't dare to say them. After thinking for a while, he opened his mouth and said, "You might think what I said before was comforting you. Like your wife forgiving you or something. You don't really believe I saw her."
"I believe you found something in the town." The sheriff looked into his eyes and said, "Perhaps you saw her bones, perhaps you saw the corpses of more people. But that is not success. Kid, your nightmare might have just begun."
Kent didn't say much more to him and took the camera off his neck directly. The ghost photo taken before had long since disappeared, and the camera was already out of power; now it couldn't be started by pressing the switch.
He handed the camera to the sheriff and said, "Try this."
The sheriff didn't take it; he shook his head and said, "I know you might have taken some photos. But these can't be used as evidence, and they can't be sent out at all. He won't let you succeed..."
"No. I mean let you try using this camera. Pick it up, and then take a photo. You can take a photo of anywhere."
Kent insisted repeatedly, and the sheriff couldn't refuse him, so he had to pick up the camera that looked like it was broken. But magically, the moment he touched the camera, the camera's screen lit up.
The sheriff raised the camera and took a photo of a random place. And just as his eyes left the lens, he saw on the digital screen below that next to the shoulder of Kent, whom he had photographed, there was a blurry woman's shadow staring at him.
"Oh! God!"
With a "clatter," the sheriff threw the camera away. He breathed rapidly, constantly leaning back into the chair, his whole body trembling.
"Now you should understand what I'm talking about." Kent said, "You should also have considered that if there are devils in this world, then naturally there will be angels, there will be God. You can't deal with the devil just because you didn't find the right method. Isn't that right?"
The sheriff sat there for a good while before he dared to slowly straighten his body: "God! My heavens... that... that is..."
"Don't be anxious." Kent said, "I forgot to introduce myself. I am an operator at the Westview Emergency Assistance Center. That's right, my office is not far from here. For a period of time, I have been receiving a harassment call at the same time. In the call, there is a woman's voice asking for help, and in the background of this sound, there is a circus advertisement. It was based on this clue that I located Valley Town. Regarding this matter, do you have any clues?"
The sheriff opened his mouth; he subconsciously still didn't want to say, but it seemed the stimulation from the scene just now was too great. He looked frequently at the side of Kent's body, perhaps out of guilt, or perhaps out of fear. He sighed and said, "The Flying Angel 'Saturn,' the founder of the Kile Circus. Twelve years after the circus was founded, she and her family were found dead in their home in Valley Town. That was the first vicious homicide case that occurred in this town. We call it the 'Valley Town Extermination Case'." ===== CHAPTER 4256 =====
Schiller looked down; it was little Morgan. She could not only run and jump, but also spoke very fluently, and perhaps because of the language development stage, she was particularly talkative, grabbing Schiller and starting to chatter.
"My heavens, Dr. Schiller, you don't know how annoying my dad is. He agonized over sunscreen brands for three hours! My mom even said she should give you a raise next year. Does he do this when he does psychological therapy usually? We clearly agreed to make a mecha to fly over, but just because he left the house late and there were no flight paths, we could only come by car; I even got carsick..."
Schiller picked up little Morgan again, weighed her in his hands, and discovered she had also gained quite a bit of weight. Children at this age grow very fast. He pinched little Morgan's chubby cheeks and then said: "Let's not talk about this first; have you gained weight again?"
"I didn't!!" little Morgan screamed, "I didn't gain weight! I haven't eaten cookies recently!"
"You absolutely did!" Helen walked in from the entrance and then said, "I told you many times, the butter cookies you love to eat have a big bucket of sugar in them. But you said you hadn't seen the production process, so you didn't believe it; you ate two whole big plates yesterday!"
Little Morgan waved her small hands, jumped down from Schiller, and ran to Helen. Helen picked her up again. Then Stark and Pepper walked in. They started sharing sunscreen products with each other.
"I checked; the UV level in Xia Weiyi today is very high. We'd better apply sunscreen before getting off the plane. Of course, Schiller, don't expect me to hold that kind of ridiculous umbrella..."
"Then just wait for skin cancer." Schiller said.
"I want to hold an umbrella, I want to hold an umbrella!" little Morgan shouted, "I want my pink Hello Kitty umbrella. Where is my umbrella?"
Pepper hurriedly went to rummage through the bag, then stuck out her tongue and said: "Oh no, we forgot. My heavens, Tony, it's all your fault; if you hadn't been there reciting sunscreen brands, I would have remembered to take it!"
"Umbrella? What umbrella?" Stark said somewhat confusedly.
"Last Christmas, Dr. Schiller gave me a pink umbrella; it was so good-looking. My classmates in kindergarten all envied me. I want my umbrella!" little Morgan shouted again.
Pepper looked at Stark. Stark said: "Alright, children have the privilege of using umbrellas for sun protection. I'll fly back to get it for you, okay."
After finishing, he armed his mecha and flew out the window. Not long after, the airport staff brought Ma Te and Elektra, the couple, in. Elektra was holding a little boy who was obviously older than the other children. This child appeared less lively and politely nodded at the adults.
"Come over, little Jack." Schiller beckoned to him. Little Jack walked over. He was a bit big and basically didn't let people hold him. So, Schiller touched his head and turned to Elektra and said: "Is his schooling problem solved?"
"It's already solved. Fortunately, Ma Te has a pretty good old classmate. I really can't believe the community we live in actually discriminates against blind people. If I had known earlier, it wouldn't have been delayed."
"It doesn't matter; as long as it's solved. However, living in Brooklyn will indeed be a bit troublesome. Are you not considering moving to Queens?"
"Ma Te and I are considering this matter," Elektra said, "But in reality, it's the same everywhere. Although there are many schools in Queens, the bullying problem in those public schools is also very serious. Little Jack might also be mocked."
"It's a pity he is too young to go to magic school. Magic school has recently recruited quite a few disabled people with good talent; there shouldn't be very serious discrimination problems there..."
As they were chatting, Wanda and Susan came together. Wanda was pushing a baby carriage, and the two brothers were by her side. Susan was relaxed; Franklin was flying by her side.
